Second Region Volleyball Tournament begins Monday

Caldwell County is the host of the Second Region Volleyball Tournament that gets underway Monday night at the CAB in Princeton.

Monday at 6pm, Christian County (19-17) plays Union County (9-15).  The teams did not meet during the regular season.

At 7:30, Trigg County (17-14) will play Hopkins County Central (18-15).  Hopkins Central won both regular season meetings.  The match on September 24th went five sets, with Trigg winning the first two before the Lady Storm rallied to win the final three.  Trigg County will be looking for their first-ever win at the region tournament.

Tuesday, the two region favorites play each other.  Henderson County (31-5) will play Crittenden County (6-16) at 6pm.  The teams did not meet during the season.

Defending region champ Caldwell County (26-9) will play University Heights Academy (19-13).  The Lady Tigers won the only meeting during the season in the championship game of the All-A Classic Region Tournament in three sets.

The only Second Region teams Caldwell County and Henderson County lost to this season were each other.

The semifinals will be played Thursday at 6pm and 7:30.  The championship will be played Saturday at 7pm.

Caldwell County has won three of the last four region titles.

Trigg County claims district volleyball title

Trigg County held off a stubborn Crittenden County squad to claim the Fifth District Volleyball title in five sets Monday night at Wildcat Gym.  Trigg won the first and third sets by identical 25-17 scores.  Crittenden won the second set 25-23 and the fourth set 26-24.  The Lady Wildcats won the deciding set 15-10.

The district title is the second in the 12-year history of the TCHS volleyball program and first since 2005.  Both titles have come on their home floor.

Trigg County never trailed in the first set, jumping out to a 10-4 lead.  Crittenden battled back to trim the lead to one on several occasions, the last a 15-14.  Trigg used two kills each from Brittany Hallgren and Emma Tilley to put together a 10-3 run to end the set.

Crittenden used a strong service percentage in the second set to jump ahead 11-6.  Trigg came back to take a 18-17 lead at one point but several mishits allowed Crittenden to retake the lead and claim the set 25-23.

Trigg was a perfect 23-for-23 on serves in the second set and never trailed, claiming another 25-17 win.

The fourth set featured 11 ties before Crittenden County scored the 26-24 win.

In the fifth and deciding set, Crittenden County jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Trigg rallied to tie the set at 6-6.  Ahead 10-9, Trigg scored four straight points to go up 14-9 and won the set 15-10.

For the match, Trigg County had a 95-percent service rate, while Crittenden County was at 91-percent.

Brittany Hallgren, the lone senior on the team, had 23 kills and two aces in the match for Trigg County.  Freshman Codie Hill added 10 kills and two aces, and eighth grader Katie Walker had eight kills.

Hallgren, Hill, Tilley, and Hannah Wright were named to the All-District team along with Crittenden's Hailey Young, Erin McDonald, and Stacey Harrell.  Maddie Gray and Destiny Lee from Livingston Central were also named to the squad.

Trigg County improves to 17-14, including a 3-2 record in matches that last five sets.  Crittenden County falls to 6-16 with the loss.  Both teams will advance to next week's Second Region Tournament at Caldwell County.

Trigg, Hoptown volleyball teams off to fast starts

The volleyball teams for both Hopkinsville and Trigg County are off to fast starts in the first week of the 2012 season.

Trigg County (2-0) opened the season with a 3-0 (25-7, 25-12, 25-16) win at Webster County Tuesday.  Last night, they beat Todd County Central 2-0 (25-16, 25-17).

The Lady Wildcats will get a stiff test Tuesday when they host defending region champion Caldwell County in the first round of the All-A Classic Second Region Tournament at Wildcat Gym.

Meanwhile, Hopkinsville, who only won six games last year, is off to a 3-0 start after beating Madisonville 2-0 last night.  The Lady Tigers opened the season Monday with a 2-1 win over Crittenden County, and beat Russellville Tuesday.

Caldwell County opens their season tonight at at Apollo Invitational, while Christian County will open their season next week.

 

Trigg County falls to Livingston Central in volleyball district tourney

Trigg County's volleyball season ended Monday night with yet another three set loss to Livingston Central 24-26, 25-22, and 25-17.  It was the 13th time in 33 matches this year that Trigg had a match last three sets.  Trigg was 5-8 this year when the match lasted three sets.

Trigg's season ends with a record of 11-22.

Livingston went on to beat Crittenden County in three sets to claim the district title on their home floor.

Meanwhile, Christian County and Hopkinsville will meet for the Eighth District championship after both teams claimed semifinal wins Monday.  Christian County beat UHA 25-12, 25-17, while Hopkinsville slipped past Fort Campbell in three sets 18-25, 25-16, 25-20. 

Match time tonight is 7pm at Hopkinsville High School.

 

Trigg County opens play in the 5th District Volleyball Tournament tonight

Trigg County opens play in the Fifth District Volleyball Tournament tonight at Livingston Central High School.

The Lady Wildcats (11-21) are the three seed and will play second seed and host Livingston Central (21-9) at 6pm. Trigg was 0-3 against the Lady Cardinals this year, with one match going three sets and another last week decided by nine points.The winner at 6pm will play top seed Crittenden County (16-4) at 7:30pm for the championship.Lady Wildcat head coach Scott Hill discussed the Lady Wildcats and their chances on the Saturday Morning Sports Report.

The 8th District Tournament begins tonight at Hopkinsville High School with top seed Christian County (17-16) playing University Heights (5-17) at 5:30pm.  Hopkinsville (5-16) and Fort Campbell (5-22) will play at 7pm.

The championship will be Tuesday at 7pm.

The 7th District Tournament gets underway Tuesday night at Hopkins County Central with the host Lady Storm (8-21) playing Madisonville (25-10).  The winner plays Caldwell County (25-7) in the 7:15pm championship.

 

Christian County takes second at Toyota of Hopkinsville Western Kentucky Smackdown

Christian County finished second to David Lipscomb, Tenn. at the Toyota of Hopkinsville/Western Kentucky Smackdown Saturday.

The Lady Colonels beat South Warren (25-17, 25-19) and LaRue County (25-16, 16-25, 25-17) on their way to the title game before falling in the championship game 13-25, 10-25.

"We had a good weekend.  We played well until the championship match," Lady Colonel head coach Rick Erickson.  "I'm proud of how well they played, but we just didn't pass or hit well enough to compensate.  But to finish second in a tournament with the quality teams we had is a great thing for our program."

Nicole Brown had 36 kills, 10 aces, 2 assists and 1 block.

Courtney Baker had 25 kills, 12 aces, 7 blocks and 2 assists.

April Buckner had 71 assists, 9 aces and 8 kills.

Grayson Rogers had 13 kills, 8 aces and 5 blocks.

Katie Rogers had 9 kills, 7 assists, 5 aces and 4 blocks.

Christian County is now 6-1 on the season and will host Bowling Green Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Trigg County finished 1-3 in the tournament, beating Hopkins County Central 19-25, 25-13, 15-12 before falling to David Lipscomb, Calloway County, and Livingston Central.

Trigg County is now 5-7 and will host Hopkinsville Monday.



Heritage Christian Academy wins Lady Warrior Invitational

Heritage Christian Academy defeated the Bluegrass Academy 26-24, 25-19 to win their Lady Warrior Invitational Saturday.

HCA swept through the tournament with four wins to improve to 10-0 on the season.

Ray Decoursey was named the most valuable player in the tournament and led the Lady Warriors with 18 kills and 12 blocks.  Morganne Mullins contributed 9 kills, and Grace Waldron had 16 kills, 4 aces, and 4 blocks. 

Grace Waldron was named to the all tournament team as was Brette Walsh, HCA's defensive specialist who had a perfect serve receive record for the entire tournament.

HCA returns to action Tuesday at Lancaster Academy in Smyrna, Tennessee.

Christian County opens season with loss

Christian County opened their 2011 volleyball season with a 25-11, 25-15 loss to 13th ranked Owensboro Catholic Tuesday at Colonel Gym.

"We made too many mistakes passing, serving and hitting.  It is hard to win against teams of that caliber when making those mistakes.  It's the 1st match of the season and we saw several good things out of the team that we can work on that will benefit us as the season continues," CCHS head coach Rick Erickson said.

Bailey Joiner had 8 kills, 6 assists and 1 block.

Courtney Baker had 4 kills and 2 blocks.

Nicole Brown had 2 kills.

Zee Leavell had 2 kills.

April Buckner had 7 assists and 1 ace.

Lacy Walker had an .826 passing percentage.

 

Christian County returns to action Thursday against Fort Campbell.

• Trigg County dropped their third straight game overall and second straight district game with a 26-24, 15-25, 16-25 loss to Crittenden County.  The Lady Wildcats (2-3, 0-2) will host Webster County Thursday. 
• South Warren kept Hopkinsville winless on the season with a 25-17, 25-14 win in Bowling Green.  The Lady Tigers (0-3) travel to Hopkins County Central Thursday.
• Fort Campbell dropped a 25-16, 25-13 decision to Livingston Central. The Lady Falcons host Christian County Thursday.

 

Russellville downs Trigg County in volleyball action

Trigg County fell to 2-2 on the season with a 25-10, 25-23 loss to Russellville Monday night at Wildcat Gym.

The Lady Wildcats will look to end their two-game slide when they host Crittenden County (2-0) Tuesday night at Wildcat Gym.

It's time for the KHSAA to classify soccer and volleyball

St. Henry beat Lexington Christian Academy Saturday to win the girls state soccer championship.  It was the first time since girls soccer began statewide in 1992 that a small school appeared in the state title game.  And while Saturday's title game doesn't help my argument any, it's time for the KHSAA to classify soccer and volleyball.

St. Henry's win over Lexington Christian marks the first time a small school has appeared in the soccer final.  It's also the first time a small school has appeared in the Final Four in the past decade.

In boys soccer, only once has a small school won the state title.  That came in 1975 when Kentucky Country Day took the title.  That was in a time when just a handful of schools fielded soccer teams.  Since then, only one small school has appeared in a title game (St. Henry 1999).  Only three times in the last decade has a small school even appeared in the state Final Four.

It's even worse in volleyball where no public school, let alone a small school, has ever appeared in the state finals.  Volleyball has been a sanctioned KHSAA sport since 1979 but has only become a true statewide sport in the past decade.

The KHSAA has taken some heat for expanding football to six classes to give schools a more equitable shot at a state title.  And they will never classify basketball because it would go against the tradition-rich and cash cow that is the Sweet Sixteen.  However, it's time for them to classify volleyball and soccer as well as softball and baseball to give the smaller schools the same chance at a state title that the football schools are given.

 

Caldwell County, Christian County to meet for the region volleyball title tonight

Caldwell County and Christian County will meet tonight in the championship game of the Second Region Volleyball Tournament at Henderson County.

Caldwell County beat the host Lady Colonels 25-19, 25-22 in one semifinal, while Christian County beat Livingston Central 25-16, 25-18 in the other semifinal.

For Caldwell County, they ran their record to 16-0 against second region teams, but their win was their closest two set win against a region team this year.

Christian County is advancing to their first region title game in school history.

Caldwell County (33-3) and Christian County (29-10) meet tonight at 7pm for the region title.

Caldwell County, the defending region champion, beat Christian County in three sets in their only regular season matchup.  Christian County won the first set 25-21, before Caldwell won the last two 25-19 and 25-12.

Caldwell has won eight straight games against Christian County dating back to the 2006 region tournament.

 

 

Volleyball Tournament moves to semifinal round tonight

The Second Region Volleyball Tournament moves to the semifinal round tonight at Henderson County High School.

Monday, Caldwell County beat Trigg County 25-9, 25-7 to end Trigg's season with a record of 7-16.  Also Monday, Henderson County beat Fort Campbell 25-18, 25-8 to advance, ending the Lady Falcons' season with a record of 17-11.

Last night, Christian County beat Union County 25-13, 25-4 to make their first regionn semifinal appearance in three years.

Casey Castile had 6 kills, 3 aces and 1 assist.

Bailey Joiner had 6 assists, 5 aces, 1 block and 1 kill.

Michelle O'Quinn had 4 aces, 2 blocks and 1 kill.

Kayla Wade had a .923 passing %.

Courtney Baker had 1 kill and 1 ace.

Christian County improves to 28-10 and will play Livingston Central, who surprised Madisonville in three sets 25-27, 26-24, 25-16.

In tonight's 6pm semifinal, Caldwell County (32-3) plays Henderson County (19-16).  Caldwell swept the season series from the Lady Colonels.

At 7:15pm, Christian County (28-10) plays Livingston Central (16-14).  The teams did not meet during the regular season.

The championship game will be Thursday night at 7pm.

 

 

Second Region Volleyball Tournament begins tonight at Henderson County

The Second Region Volleyball Tournament gets underway tonight at Henderson County with two games on tap.

Seventh District champ and defending region champ Caldwell County hosts Fifth District runner-up Trigg County at 6pm.  The two former district mates are meeting in the region tourney for the first time.  Caldwell County is 31-3 and is 14-0 against region opponents this year.  The Lady Tigers have won two of the last three region titles.

Trigg County (7-15) is in the region tournament for the fourth time and the first since 2005. Trigg has never won a game in three previous appearances.

At 7:15pm, Sixth District champ Henderson County (18-16) plays Eighth District runner-up Fort Campbell (17-10).  The teams did not meet during the regular season and haven't played each other since the 2007 region tournament.

The first round continues Tuesday at 6pm with Eighth District champ Christian County (27-10) playing Sixth District runner-up Union County (11-16).  The Lady Colonels are looking for their first win in the region tournament in three years.  Christian and Union did not play each other this season.

In the 7:15pm nightcap, Fifth District champ Livingston Central (15-14) plays Seventh District runner-up Madisonville (19-16).  The teams split their two regular season contests.

The semifinals will be played Wednesday at 6pm and 7:15pm with the championship game set for Thursday at 7pm.

All games are at Henderson County High School, and tickets are five dollars.

 
     

Trigg takes second in district volleyball tourney

 

Trigg County snapped a 10-game losing streak to Crittenden County to advance to the Fifth District Volleyball Tournament championship game.  Trigg lost to Livingston Central in the title game, but will advance to next week's Second Region Tournament at Henderson County.

Trigg County opened with a 25-20, 25-13 win over Crittenden County.  The win snapped a 27-game losing streak to district teams dating back to 2007.  It also snapped a 10-game losing streak to the Lady Rockets, including five straight in Marion.

In the championship game, Trigg lost the first game to Livingston Central 25-11.  They battled in the second game before falling 29-27.

Trigg County (7-15) and Livingston Central (15-14) both advance to next week's Second Region Tournament at Henderson County.  Trigg will either play Sixth District champ Henderson County, Seventh District champ Caldwell County, or Eighth District champ Christian County.

It will be Trigg's fourth trip to the region tournament, with the Lady Wildcats winless in their previous three visits.

Meanwhile, Christian County won their third straight district title with a 25-14, 25-27, 25-22 win over Fort Campbell in the Eighth District title game at Fort Campbell.

"We played very well in the first set. In the 2nd and 3rd sets, Ft. Campbell did a good job of attacking and digging balls that we hit well," said CCHS head coach Rick Erickson.  "Both liberos dug balls that appeared to be down. It was a very good defensive match. We were able to dig deep and make the big plays late in the 3rd set when it mattered most."

Michelle O'Quinn had 15 kills, 3 aces and 2 blocks. Casey Castile had 9 kills, 1 block and 1 ace. Courtney Baker had 7 blocks, 2 kills and 1 assist. Christian County is now 27-10.  Fort Campbell falls to 17-10.

Elsewhere, Caldwell County (31-3) won their fourth straight district title, winning the 7th District title 25-13, 25-15.

Henderson County (18-16) beat Union County 25-17, 25-15 to win the 6th District title.

 

District Volleyball Tournaments begin tonight

The Eighth District Volleyball Tournament gets underway tonight at Fort Campbell High School.

Top seed Christian County (25-10) plays University Heights (1-20) in the 5:30pm opener.  Christian County won both regular season matchups -- 25-11, 25-20 on Aug. 24 and 25-9, 25-9 on Sept. 16.

In the 7pm nightcap, second seed Fort Campbell (16-9) plays three seed Hopkinsville (14-11).  The Lady Falcons won the first matchup 25-23, 25-10 on Aug. 12.  Hoptown won the return match 25-23, 25-22 on Sept. 7.

The championship game is set for Tuesday at 7pm.  Both the winner and the runner-up will advance to next week's region tournament to be hosted by the Sixth District champion.

Meanwhile, Crittenden County is the host of the Fifth District Tournament that will be played Tuesday.  Crittenden County (12-9) plays Trigg County (6-14) at 6pm.  The winner plays Livingston Central (14-14) in the 7:15pm championship game.

Crittenden County swept the regular season matches, winning in three sets both times.  In both games, Trigg County won the first set before dropping the final two.  Incredibly, in the six games played in two matches between the teams, no game has been decided by more than three points.

Unbeatens Trigg County and Hopkinsville to meet tonight

Trigg County and Hopkinsville, the last two unbeaten soccer teams in the region, meet tonight at the Complex as the teams try to send a region message to the other.

The Wildcats are 14-0-1, having tied the school record with 14 straight wins.  Hopkinsville is 12-0-5 after their Saturday win over Calloway County.

Trigg County has beaten Hopkinsville just once in 18 career meetings.  That came in the 2001 region tournament.  Hopkinsville has won five games since then with another ending in a tie.

GIRLS SOCCER

University Heights Academy tied Owensboro Catholic 3-3 Monday in Hopkinsville.  The Lady Aces (8-7-2) jumped out to an early lead with two goals, but Sally Morse scored off of an assist from Eden Mack to close the margin just before halftime. In the second half, after another goal by the Lady Aces, Meg Thalmann used a header to put one in the net and Alyson Parker scored on a penalty kick to tie the score in the last two minutes of the game. UHA is now 10-2-1 on the season.

In the JV game, UHA beat the Lady Aces 5-2. Sally Morse scored four goals and Connor East scored one goal for the Lady Blazers (13-1).

In other games, Caldwell County shut out Paducah Tilghman 3-0.  Fort Campbell edged Todd County Central 2-1, Greenwood nipped Hopkinsville 1-0, ending the Lady Tigers' 12-game unbeaten streak.

VOLLEYBALL

Caldwell County beat Hopkins County Central 25-5, 25-13.  Caldwell County is now 25-2 and a perfect 4-0 in district play.

The Christian County Middle School Volleyball team finished it's season last night with both 8th & 7th grade teams losing to Hopkinsville Middle School.

The 8th grade team lost to Hoptown 21-11, 19-21, 13-15. They finished the season with a record of 6-4.

The 7th grade team lost to Hoptown 21-15, 9-21, 13-15. They finished the season with a record of 1-8.

 

JV FOOTBALL

Trigg County beat Hopkins County Central 52-26.  Luke McKenzie threw four touchdowns -- two to Quinton Bird.  One of the TDs covered 89 yards.   McKenzie had over 300 yards passing and 150 more rushing, according to TCHS assistant coach Coby Lewis.  Devonte Nance had two touchdowns receiving and picked off two passes.

  

Caldwell County downs Trigg County in volleyball action

Caldwell County won their 14th straight game Tuesday with a 25-8, 25-7 win over Trigg County in Princeton.

Caldwell improves to 17-1 overall and 3-0 in district play, securing the top seed in the district tournament.

Trigg County falls to 4-9 with their fifth straight loss.  The Lady Wildcats return to action Thursday at Crittenden County.

In other volleyball action Tuesday:

•  Christian County (17-6) beat Logan County (18-3) 25-23, 19-25, 25-21.
   
  "I'm very proud of how the girls played tonight.  They played as a team and continually picked each other up when the plays were not going our way.  They never gave up on each other!  We did a wonderful job at the net blocking and altering Logan's hits.  We also served as well as we have all year.  We attacked a lot tonight.  That was due to how well we passed.  Great passing makes us successful and tonight we were successful," CCHS coach Rick Erickson said.
   
  "Logan County is a great team.  This was a big win for us."
   
  Christian County trailed 8-15 in the first set before coming back to tie it at 15-15.  They then trailed 19-22 before tying the score at 22-22.  They then went on to win 25-23.
   
  In the 2nd set, Logan jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Christian Co. tied it at 5-5 and 6-6.  That was the last time the match would be tied as Logan would go up 17-12 and 22-15.  Christian reached to within 3 points  at 19-22 before Logan put the match away 25-19.
   
  In the 3rd set, Logan started off hot and was up 6-2.  Christian Co. tied it up at 11-11 and 14-14 before Logan took a 19-16 and then a 21-18 lead.  Christian Co. sided out and served out the match to claim the 25-21 win.
   
  Kayla Wade had an .804 passing percentage and 2 aces.
  Bailey Joiner had 17 assists, 1 ace and 1 kill.

  "What I love about our team this year, is their ability to hold it together and fight back one point at a time, even when it seems they are in an impossible situation," said HCA coach Keith Sage.  "We were missing two of our starters to sickness, (Grace Waldron and Morganne Mullen)." 

   

  Ray DeCoursey had 7 kills, and Taylor Davey had 2 kills and was 10 for 11 serving with one ace.  Katy Ward went 14 for 16 serving with 6 aces and Abby Weatherford was 10 for 12 on serves and had three aces.  HCA improves to 9-1 overall and returns to action Thursday against Victory Academy in Hopkinsville.

Toyota of Hopkinsville Western Kentucky Smackdown begins today

Christian County and Hopkinsville will team together to host the 2010 Toyota of Hopkinsville Western Kentucky Smackdown that begins today.  There are 16 teams in the field this year.  Matches will be played at Christian County High School, Christian County Middle School, Hopkinsville High School and Hopkinsville Middle School.

 

Matches will start at all 4 schools at 5:30 tonight.  There will be four matches at each site on Friday night.  On Saturday, matches start at 9:00 am.  After pool play, there will be a Gold Division and a Silver Division.  The Gold Division will be played at CCHS and CCMS.  The Silver Division will be played at HHS and HMS.

Christian County JV won the Silver Medal round of the Christian County Invitation.  They went 3-1 on the day.

 

In pool play, they lost to Union County 15-21, 11-21 and beat Caldwell County White 21-18, 21-8.  In the Silver Medal round, they beat Graves County 21-7, 21-10 and then beat Christian County Freshmen 21-4, 21-8 in the Championship Game.

Trigg volleyball team splits first two games

Trigg County opened the 2010 volleyball season by splitting their first two games.

The Lady Wildcats beat Hopkins County Central 25-15, 25-10 Thursday night at Wildcat Gym.  The win was Trigg's first season opening win in two years and the first for new coach Scott Hill.

Trigg County opened the district portion of their schedule Tuesday night with a 25-22, 24-26, and 22-25 loss to Crittenden County at Wildcat Gym.

The 144 total points scored in the match was the most in a Lady Wildcat game since a three set win over Russellville in 2008.

Trigg County returns to action Thursday night at University Heights Academy in Hopkinsville.  It's the first of nine straight road games for the Lady Wildcats.

Trigg County to return to the All-A Classic

After a four-year absence, Trigg County will return to the All-A Classic in 2010-11.

The basketball coaches learned of their All-A Tournament matchups at a meeting last week.  Trigg County's boys will host Livingston Central Jan. 18, 2011 in the first round.  They will play the winner of Crittenden County and Lyon County in an upper bracket that matches this past year's district tournament.

Dawson Springs hosts Caldwell County in the bottom bracket wih University Heights getting a first round bye.

The semifinals will be Jan. 21, 2011 at Crittenden County High School with the championship game the following night.

For the ladies, Trigg County will play at Lyon County on Jan. 17, 2011.  They will play the winner of Dawson Springs and Caldwell County.

The lower bracket has Crittenden County at University Heights with Livingston Central getting a first round bye.

The semifinals will be Jan. 20, 2011.

Trigg's boys have played in the All-A championship four times, winning a title in 1997. The girls have advanced to the finals once.

Trigg County replaces Fort Campbell in the All-A.  Fort Campbell's enrollment exceeded the guidelines set forth by the All-A Classic.

The inclusion in the All-A Tournament also includes soccer, golf, volleyball, baseball, and softball, with those pairings to be announced later.

While Trigg's enrollment isn't declining, the consolidation of several smaller schools around the state have dropped Trigg into the bottom 125, which sets the All-A eligibility.  With Heath and Reidland getting consolidated into the new McCracken County High School, Trigg may stay in the All-A for a while.

However, the future fate of Fort Campbell in the All-A Classic isn't known with student growth on post growing.

Henderson County, Livingston Central advance at Volleyball region tourney

Livingston Central made their first trip to the region tournament a memorable one as they knocked off Christian County 25-17, 11-25, 25-21 in the first round of the Second Region Tournament at Madisonville.

Livingston Central (27-8) will play Madisonville (24-10) tonight at 7:15pm in the semifinals.  Madisonville won the only meeting between the schools in three sets in August.

In the other first round game, Henderson County (18-21) knocked off Hopkinsville 25-9, 25-11 to advance to tonight's second round game against Caldwell County (31-3).  Hopkinsville's season ends with a record of 7-18.  Caldwell beat Henderson County in straight sets in the only meeting between the schools last month.

Tonight's winners will play in Thursday's championship game.

Second Region Volleyball Tournament gets underway tonight

The Second Region Volleyball Tournament gets underway tonight at Madisonville High School.

Hopkinsville (7-17) plays Henderson County (17-21) at 6pm, with Christian County (24-8) set to play Livingston Central (26-8) at 7:15pm.  Hoptown and Henderson did not meet during the regular season.  Christian County played Livingston once during the season, a 25-9, 25-14 win in August.

The winner of the Hoptown/Henderson game will play Caldwell County (31-3) Tuesday night at 6pm, while Madisonville (24-10) awaits the Christian County/Livingston Central winner at 7:15pm.

The championship will be played Thursday at 7pm.

Caldwell County takes volleyball district title

Caldwell County won their third straight district title with a 25-15, 25-15 win over Livingston Central Thursday night at Wildcat Gym.

Caldwell has now won 30 straight games over district opponents dating back to the 2006 district tournament.

Both Caldwell (31-3) and Livingston Central (26-8) will advance to next week's region tournament.

Players named to the All-District team were Courtney Oliver of Trigg County; Emily Meeks, Makenzie Sindelar, Bayley Tucker, and Casey Stone of Caldwell County; Jessica Wingham, Kaitlyn Brooks, and Jessica Long of Livingston Central; and Erika Leet of Crittenden County.

Volleyball District Title Game tonight

Caldwell County is where they are used to being.  Livingston Central is not.

Those teams meet in the title game of the Seventh District Volleyball Tournament tonight at Wildcat Gym.

Caldwell County is making their eighth straight appearance in the championship game.  They have won two straight titles and four district titles overall.  The Lady Tigers enter the game with a record of 30-3 and have won 29 straight games against district opponents dating back t0 2006.

Livingston Central is making their first appearance in the district title game and come into the contest with a school-record 26 wins against seven losses.  The Lady Cardinals were 0-3 against Caldwell during the season and have lost all 12 career meetings against Caldwell.

The title game is scheduled for 7pm.

Christian County has won back-to-back district volleyball titles for the first time in school history following their 25-17, 25-17 win over Hopkinsville Tuesday at Colonel Gym.

"The girls did a great job tonight of keeping the ball alive and being aggressive.  They played as a team and did not give up on each other.  Our passing and attacking was great.  We moved the ball around to all six of our hitters very well.  We also served very well and hit our spots.  I am very proud of how well the team played," CCHS coach Rick Erickson said.

 

Hopkinsville advanced to the title game with a 25-19, 26-28, 26-24 win over Fort Campbell.

 

Nolan had eight kills, Ezell had eight aces and six kills, Kaitlyn Kemp had 20 assists, and Clayton Cassidy had 15 assists.

 

For Christian County, Kayla Wade, Casey Castile, Michelle O'Quinn and Carly P'Pool were named to the All-District Team, while Tori Beth Nolan, Kaitlyn Kemp, and Nu'u Falatafuga were named to the team from Hopkinsville.

 

Both Christian County (24-8) and Hopkinsville (7-17) will advance to next week's region tourney at Madisonville.  For Hoptown, it's their first trip to the region tourney since 2005.

 

Meanwhile, Caldwell County ended Trigg County's season with a 25-2, 25-6 win in the 7th District Tournament at Wildcat Gym.

 

For the Lady Wildcats, their season ends with a record of 3-18.

 

Caldwell County (30-3) will play Livingston Central (26-7) in Thursday's title game.  Livingston was a straight-set winner over Crittenden County.

• Trigg County ended the regulr season with a 4-1 loss to Lone Oak.  Blane Alexander scored Trigg's lone goal in the first half, while the Purple Flash (8-7-5) scored two goals in the second half to seal the win.  Kevin Latham had eight saves in goal for the Wildcats, who were outshot 15-7.  Trigg County wraps up the regular season with a record of 10-3-4.
• Fort Campbell won their third straight game with a 4-3 win over Calloway County.  The Falcons end the regular season with a record of 8-4-1.

Christian County and Caldwell County to host "Dig Pink" night for breast cancer awareness

Christian County and Caldwell County's volleyball teams will be hosting a "Dig Pink" night Sept. 24 to raise funds for breast cancer awareness.

Matches are Freshmen at 5:00, JV at 6:00 and Varsity at 7:00. Christian County will be wearing Orange shirts for Leukemia in honor of Matthew Litchfield.

Christian County downs Hopkinsville in cross-town volleyball match

Christian County beat Hopkinsville 17-25, 25-15, and 25-12 Tuesday night in a district volleyball match at Tiger Gym.

"We started out flat and had entirely too many hitting and serving errors in the first game," said Christian County head coach Rick Erickson.  "Hopkinsville did a great job of keeping the ball in play and playing smart.  About half way through the 2nd game, we had to adjust to keeping the ball in play and not attacking."

Trigg falls to Crittenden in volleyball

Trigg County dropped their volleyball home opener to Crittenden County 25-9, 25-16 Tuesday night at Wildcat Gym.

The Lady Wildcats fall to 0-2 and will host Livingston Central next Tuesday at Wildcat Gym.  No other game details were known.

Hopkinsville falls to Todd Central

Hopkinsville won the first set, but Todd County rallied to win the final two and post a 22-25, 25-16, 25-22 win in volleyball action Monday night in Elkton.

Hoptown (1-2) was playing without starters Lindsey Ezell and Dani Matthews who were out sick.

Todd County also won the JV contest 2-1, while Hopkinsville won the freshman game in three sets.

Hopkinsville returns to action Thursday at home against Hopkins County Central.

On Saturday:

Christian County went 3-2 and finished tied for 9th place out of 24 teams at the Apollo Summer Slam.

On Friday, Christian County beat Ohio County 25-21, 25-12. They lost to Bowling Green 18-25, 19-25.

On Saturday, they beat Hancock County 25-21, 21-25, 25-22 to finish 2nd in their pool and advance to the Gold Medal Round.

In the Gold Medal Round, they lost to Grayson County 25-21, 13-25, 17-25 and beat Paducah Tillghman 25-19, 24-26, 25-18.

Casey Castile had 39 kills and 5 blocks.

Michelle O'Quinn had 27 kills, 7 blocks, and 5 aces

Kayla Wade had 62 assists and 5 aces.

Courtney Baker had 18 kills, 28 blocks and 2 assists.

Hopkinsville, Christian County net volleyball wins

Christian County opened the 2009 season with a 2-1 win over Crittenden County Thursday night at Colonel Gym.

Christian County beat Crittenden County 2 sets to 1 (25-19, 21-25, 25-10)

Kayla Wade had 22 assists, 1 kill and 1 ace.

Michelle O'Quinn had 11 kills, 1 ace and 1 block.

Casey Castile had 9 kills, 1 ace and 1 block.

Carly P'Pool had 6 aces, 1 kill, 1 block and 1 assist.

Courtney Baker had 8 blocks, 1 kill and 1 assist.

Shelby Allison had 4 blocks, 2 kills and 2 aces.

Brianna Outland had 3 aces.

 

In the JV match, Christian County won 21-9, 21-9.

"We played up and down the first two sets of the match. In the third set, the girls turned it on and showed how they are capable of playing," CCHS head coach Rick Erickson said. "Crittenden tipped and pushed the ball a lot and we didn't make any adjustments until the third set. I hope it was just first match jitters and that we are beyond that now."

Christian County will play in the Apollo Summer Slam tonight in Owensboro.

 

Elsewhere, Hopkinsville evened their record at 1-1 on the season with a 25-23, 25-18 win at Russellville.

 

"We played better and worked well at the net," said HHS head coach Mindy Hargrove.  "We clicked better and our serving and passing was much better than Tuesday."

 

Hopkinsville will play at Todd County Central Monday.

Kelly Bradshaw signs with Mid-Continent University

Trigg County volleyball player Kelly Bradshaw has signed a scholarship agreement to continue her playing career at Mid-Continent University in Mayfield.

Bradshaw signed the agreement today at the high school along with representatives from MCU.

She said she liked the small campus and coaching staff of Mid-Continent University.

Christa Bakemeier, the interim head coach at MCU, saw Bradshaw play several games this past season and came away impressed with her playing skills, especially on serves.

Bradshaw was an all-district player her sophomore season at Hopkinsville High before transferring to Trigg County.  She was an all-district selection again this year and was named the team's Co-MVP as well as leading the Lady Wildcats in aces and kills.

Mid-Continent was 0-26 last year, which prompted the school to part ways with head coach Lilly Zhan.  Bakemeier said she has applied for the head coaching position.  The program, which competes at the NAIA level, has won just seven games in four years, meaning Bradshaw has a good chance to see plenty of court time early.

CourtTime Volleyball tryouts this Saturday

Tryouts for CourtTime Volleyball will be held Saturday at Christian County High School.  The JV tryouts will be from 2:30-4:00 and the varsity tryouts will be from 4:30-6pm.

There will be leagues for third through fifth grades and sixth through eighth grades, according to director Rick Erickson.

There will be two sessions for the elementary and middle school leagues.  The first session will run from January to March and the second from March to May.  The cost is $70 for each session or $125 for both.

Volleyball team holds banquet

Apparently, the Trigg County High School volleyball team held their annual banquet before Friday's football game.

Someone was nice enough to send me the banquet winners today.  There is no picture of the award winners since I wasn't aware of it.

• Faythe Ray was awarded most positive attitude
• Lakeysha Jones was awarded highest serve percentage, and most improved.
• Samantha Harper was awarded the Setters Award.
• Kelly Bradshaw was awarded Best Passer, Most Aces, and Most Kills.
• The MVP awards were given to Stephanie Graves and Kelly Bradshaw.

Regional volleyball draw and pairings

Here is the draw for the Second Region Volleyball Tournament that begins Monday night at Caldwell County.  The tournament is single-elimination.

MONDAY - 6pm - Fort Campbell (19-10) vs. Union County (17-15)

7:30pm - Henderson County (19-18) vs. Crittenden County (15-6)

TUESDAY - 6pm - Caldwell County (32-4) vs. Fort Campbell/Union County winner

7:30pm - Christian County (23-13) vs. Henderson County/Crittenden County winner

The championship game will be played Thursday at 7pm.

Caldwell County 2 Crittenden County 1

Caldwell County had to come from behind to win the Seventh District Volleyball title Thursday night in Smithland.

Crittenden County won the first game 25-23 before Caldwell County rebounded to win the last two 25-14, 25-17.

Both Caldwell County (32-4) and Crittenden County (15-6) advance to next week's region tournament.

Kelly Bradshaw from Trigg County was named to the All-District Team.

Trigg County saw their volleyball season come to an end with a 25-16, 25-13 loss to Caldwell County in the first round of the Seventh District Tournament at Livingston Central High School Tuesday.

Trigg's season ends with a record of 11-20, having lost six of their last seven matches.  They were 0-5 against Caldwell County throughout the season.

Caldwell County improved to 28-2 on the season and will play Crittenden County in Thursday's championship game.  Crittenden edged Livingston Central 25-21, 25-22.

No other details were available on the matches.
