Ashley Campbell named new Trigg County softball coach

Trigg County has named Ashley Campbell as their new girls' softball coach.  The announcement came at the school on Tuesday.

Campbell teaches in the high school and graduated from Murray State in the spring.  She was a three-year starter for the Elmore County, Alabama High School team, a team captain, and was named Academic All-State.

Campbell will have her work cut out for her.  She takes over a Trigg County softball program that has won just 73 games in the 17 seasons since softball made the switch from slow pitch to fast pitch.  She replaces Lacey Briscoe, who resigned in the spring after an 8-45 record in three seasons.  Trigg County was 4-20 this year.

The Lady Wildcats have never advanced to the Second Region Tournament in fast pitch and haven't won a district tournament game since 2005.  Their only winning fast pitch season came in 2004.

Campbell said she plans on starting preseason condition after fall break.

 

Second Region Softball Tournament begins Monday

The Second Region Softball Tournament begins Monday at Webster County High School in Dixon.  Incredibly, three of the four first round games are identical to 2011.  Of the eight winningest teams in the region this year, seven are in the tournament.  The only exception is Webster County (17-20).

(11:00 am) -- Henderson County (18-14) vs. Lyon County (12-12) -- These teams began the season on opening day, and they will open the region tournament as well.  Henderson County hammered Lyon County 16-1 way back on March 20th in Eddyville.  Henderson County won last year's region tourney opener 13-1.  Henderson County has won three straight first round games and will be looking to bring home their first region title since 2006.  Lyon County hasn't won a first round game since they beat Henderson County 11-3 in the 2008 tournament.  This matchup is the only one in the first round that doesn't feature teams with 20 wins.

(1:00 pm) -- Hopkins County Central (24-11) vs. University Heights (21-13) -- UHA is back in the region tournament for the first time in three years.  They will be looking for their first win in the region tournament in over a decade.  Hopkins Central won the earlier game between the schools 8-4 back on April 20th.  UHA enters the tournament having won nine of their last 10 games.  Hopkins Central has won just five of eight games coming into the tournament.  They edged Madisonville 3-2 to win the Seventh District title.  Hopkins County Central ended Christian County's four-year run as region champs last year and have won 10 straight region tournament openers.

(3:00 pm) -- Livingston Central (31-6) vs. Madisonville (25-10) -- This first round contest features teams both be considered darkhorses that could surprise their way to the region title game.  Livingston Central has the most wins of any team in the region.  The Lady Cardinals advanced to the Final Four of the All-A Classic State Tournament and went 15-1 against Second Region teams this year but did not play Madisonville during the season.  Junior pitcher Emily Jenkins did not allow a single hit in two wins in the Fifth District Tournament.  Meanwhile, Madisonville has won 11 of 13 games heading into the tournament with those losses to Hopkins Central and Christian County.  Madisonville won a game at the region tournament last year for the first time in a decade and advanced to the title game.

(5:00 pm) -- Christian County (28-6) vs. Union County (20-13) -- Don't count Union County among those who like the Second Region draw.  This year marks the third straight time they have drawn Christian County in the first round.  The Lady Colonels have won the last two first round games by a combined 29-1 score.  The teams have met three times this year, with Christian County winning 6-0 on March 30 and 9-0 on May 12.  However, Union beat Christian County 6-5 back on May 18th, snapping the Lady Colonels' 12-game winning streak against region opponents.  Union County last won a first round game in 2009, while Christian County hasn't lost a first round game since 2006.

Hopkinsville stuns Trigg County with 3-run 7th inning

Hopkinsville stunned Trigg County with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to snatch away a 3-2 win from the Lady Wildcats Tuesday in Hopkinsville.

Ashlee Messmer had an RBI single as part of a two-run sixth inning for Trigg County.  The Lady Wildcats had several chances to extend a lead in the game but left 11 runners on base.

Rachel Summers smacked a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh that proved to be the game winner.

Alison Russell struck out 11 and allowed four hits for the Lady Wildcats but was the tough luck loser.

Kayleigh Wilson pitched the seventh inning for the win for Hopkinsville (3-3).

Trigg County (1-5) will host Caldwell County Thursday, while Hopkinsville will host Christian County in their annual cross-town matchup at Hoptown.

Jim Perrin returning to coach Christian County softball

Christian County has turned to a familiar face to lead their softball team.

Jim Perrin was named the new softball coach this morning at the school, ending one search and causing another one to begin.

Perrin coached Christian County from 1984-2003, compiling a 632-147 record in 20 seasons. That included four state titles, four state runner-up finishes, and one third-place finish. During that time, Christian County also won 19 district titles and 11 regional championships. The Lady Colonels won three state titles as a slow pitch program before switching to fast pitch in 1995. Christian County won the fast pitch crown in 1996, a year after converting to fast-pitch play.

Perrin produced 32 all-state players while at Christian County, including several who went on to play at the college level, and was named Kentucky Coach of the Year four times.

He was inducted in the National Fast Pitch Coaches Association Victory Club (600 wins) in 2002.

A 1970 graduate of Austin Peay State University, Perrin coached the Lady Governors softball team for four seasons. He compiled an 85-136 record before resigning in 2008.

Perrin has served as athletic director at Trigg County since July 2008 and coached the Lady Wildcat softball team to a 4-15 record in 2009.

Now, Trigg County must replace their athletic director just days after beginning a search for a new football coach when Shannon Burcham was named the new TCHS principal. Burcham also served as the assistant athletic director, meaning the Trigg County athletic program will undergo a slight overhaul this season.

Christian County wins Lady Colonel Classic

Christian County allowed six runs in three games and won the Lady Colonel Classic Saturday at Tie Breaker Park in Hopkinsville.

It was the first time Christian County has won their own tournament since adopting the single elimination format several years ago.

Griffin Joiner hit a pair of solo home runs and picked up the pitching win in the championship game -- a 6-2 win over Union County.

Joiner gave up three hits and two runs over four innings, striking out seven.  Maggie Glass gave up one hit over the final three innings to get the save.

Casey Castile and Maddie Pelletier each had two hits for Christian County (16-2).

Haley Ogletree had a two-run home run for Union County (13-4).

Christian County advanced to the title game with a 16-2 win over St. Mary.  The Lady Colonels scored in every inning, highlighted by three hits and three RBIs by Griffin Joiner and three hits by Maggie Glass.

Casey Castile and Malena Whipple each had two hits as part of the 15-hit attack.

Angela Russell had a two-run home run for St. Mary (7-5).

In the opener, Malina Whipple and Maddie Pelletier each homered to power the Lady Colonels to a 10-2 win over Edmonson County.  Pelletier drove in three runs with two hits, and Casey Castile added two hits.

For the three games, Castile was 6-for-10 with six runs scored, while Pelletier was 5-for-9 with four RBIs.

Griffin Joiner signs letter to play at University of Kentucky

Christian County's Griffin Joiner has signed a letter of intent to play her college softball at the University of Kentucky.  Joiner chose UK over Louisville and Murray State, however she verballed to UK last year.

Joiner has the chance to leave Christian County as one of the best ever to play at the school, which is saying something given the tradition of the Lady Colonel program.  Joiner is a career .461 hitter with 12 homers, 150 RBIs, and 71 extra base hits.  She has struck out only 15 times in 483 career at bats.

Last year, Joiner hit .556 with 11 homers and 53 RBIs.  Her average was the highest single-season batting average in school history.

Joiner was a second team all-state selection in both 2008 and 2009 and was first time all state last year in addition to being named to the state tournament all-tournament team.

Joiner also carries a 4.1 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society, Beta Club, and was first team academic all-state for softball.

Casey Castile signs with Murray State

Christian County outfielder Casey Castile has signed a letter to continue her softball career at Murray State University.

The senior said she chose Murray State over Western Kentucky and Evansville.  Castile is an all-district and all-region softball and volleyball player, helping the Lady Colonels to district titles in both sports the past three years. 

Castile hit .361 last year in 46 games with 9 HR and 34 RBIs.  She currently ranks 15th in the state in career homeruns with 19.  She is a career .352 hitter and has 81 RBIs.

With a 3.6 GPA, Castile is a member of the National Honors Society, and says she is undecided on her college major.

Christian County takes home fourth straight region softball title

Christian County won their fourth straight Second Region softball title Thursday night with a 10-0 win over Henderson County at Lady Tiger Field in Hopkinsville.

Christian County jumped out of the gate with eight runs in the first inning, highlighted by two-run homers by Casey Castile and Stacey Harbold.

Hannah Driver added two doubles and picked up the win on the mound, allowing just one hit and sriking out 13.

Christian County improves to 37-4 with the win and will play the Third Region champ, likely Owensboro Catholic, next Friday in the first round of the state tournament in Owensboro.

Named to the All-Region Tournament team were Casey Hayes, Casey Castile, Griffin Joiner, and Hannah Driver from Christian County; Ashley Crooke, Katelyn McMillan, and Amber Pendergraft from Henderson County; Ali Austin and Taylor Crawley from Hopkins County Central; Kayla Moore and Stephanie Rudd from Livingston Cenral; Page Davis from Union County; Sami Jo Quisenberry from Crittenden County; Brooke Randolph from Dawson Springs and Katelyn Lewis from University Heights Academy. 

2nd Region Softball Tourney: Day One Scores

Here are the Day One scores from the Second Region Softball Tournament at Hopkinsville.

• Stephanie Rudd pitched the shutout at Livingston Central avenged two earlier season losses to Dawson Springs and beat the Lady Panthers 1-0 in the first round.  Dawson Springs sees their season end with a record of 21-11.
• Henderson County shut out University Heights 3-0 to advance to the semifinals.  UHA's season ends at 9-20.
• Taylor Crawley hit a walk-off single in the seventh inning as Hopkins County Central avoided the upset with a 1-0 win over Crittenden County, whose season ends at 6-15.
• Griffin Joiner had three hits, including a home run, and Casey Castile smacked a grand slam as Christian County thumped Union County 14-1.  Union's season ends with a record of 24-11.

University Heights Academy scored nine times in the first innings and went on for the 16-6 win over Trigg County Thursday at the Complex.

UHA had four hits and took advantage of three Trigg errors in the frame.

Trigg scored four times in the second inning to cut the lead to 9-5, but UHA tacked on four runs in the third to put the game away.

Jessica Hanks had two singles and scored three runs, while Shayna Hudson had two hits for UHA.

Sierra Bush had two hits for Trigg County, while Morgan Parker added a triple for the Lady Wildcats.

UHA improved to 7-15 and will host Russellville today.

Trigg County fell to 1-12 and will host Hopkinsville today at the Complex.

Caldwell County 15 Trigg County 0

Caldwell County scored nine times in the first inning and cruised to a 15-0 softball win Tuesday in Princeton. 

The Lady Tigers had six hits and took advantage of eight Trigg County errors in the game.

Morgan Parker had Trigg County's lone hit, a single.

The win was Caldwell's fourth straight, and the Lady Tigers improve to 7-15 on the year.

Trigg County falls to 1-11 on the season and will host University Heights Thursday.

Todd County Central 14 Trigg County 1

Todd County Central sent 15 batters to the plate during an 11-run fifth inning and beat Trigg County 14-1 Thursday at the Complex.

The Lady Rebels rapped out eight hits in the inning and took advantage of four Lady Wildcat errors to punctuate their big inning.

Addison Rundall had two RBI singles in the fifth inning, and Yadel Gonzalez had an RBI double and an RBI single in the big inning.

Evie Turner also had three hits and two RBIs for the Lady Rebels, who improved to 7-6 with the win.

Brandi Mallory allowed just two hits and struck out seven in getting the win.

Trigg County scored their lone run in the third inning when Elizabeth Torian reached on an error, stole two bases, and scored on a single by Lauren Daniel.

Sierra Bush had the other hit for the Lady Wildcats (0-6).

Daniel suffered the loss on the mound, striking out four and giving up eight earned runs in five innings.

Trigg County returns to action Friday night at Murray.

Lyon County 6 Trigg County 2

Just days after their worst effort of the season, Trigg County rebounded strongly in falling to Lyon County 6-2 tonight at the Complex.

Trigg County, which committed 11 errors Tuesday in a loss to Fort Campbell, had just one against the Lady Lyons.

Trigg got both their runs in the sixth inning.  Lyon scored single runs in the first and fourth innings and two runs each in the sixth and seventh innings.

Morgan Parker had two of Trigg County's five hits, while Elizabeth Torian, Taylor Furr, and Breanna Messmer each had singles.

Lauren Daniel scattered nine hits and struck out one in taking the loss on the mound for the Lady Wildcats.

Trigg County (0-4) returns to action Tuesday at home in another district game against Crittenden County.  The game was switched to Cadiz before the season started.  Crittenden County beat Trigg 7-0 on April Fool's Day in Marion.

Fort Campbell 14 Trigg County 4

Trigg County committed six first inning errors and had 11 for the game in a sloppy 14-4 softball loss at Fort Campbell tonight.

The Lady Falcons took advantage by scoring eight runs in the first inning and two more in the second.

Breanna Messmer and Morgan Parker each had doubles for the Lady Wildcats, while Elizabeth Torian had a single and two RBIs.  Ashley McGee and Sierra Bush also had singles for Trigg County (0-3).

12 of the 14 Fort Campbell runs scored were unearned.

Trigg County returns to action Thursday in their home opener with Lyon County at 5:30pm at the Complex.

Todd County 11 Trigg County 6

Todd County Central jumped ahead with four first run innings and put the game away with four runs in the sixth in beating Trigg County 11-6 tonight in Elkton.

Eighth grader Brittany Thomas hit a home run and added two singles and drove in three runs as part of a 3-for-4 night.  Ashley McGee added three singles, and Elizabeth Torian had a single and a triple as part of a 10-hit Trigg attack.

Trigg committed six errors in the game that led to nine unearned runs for the Lady Rebels.

Trigg County (0-2) returns to action Feb. 13 at Fort Campbell.

Crittenden County 7 Trigg County 0

Trigg County dropped their 2010 softball season opener at Crittenden County Thursday, falling to the Lady Rockets 7-0 in Marion.

Trigg outhit Crittenden 5-4 but committed six errors in the field that led to six unearned runs.

Sierra Bush, Ashley McGee, Lauren Daniel, Taylor Furr, and Breanna Messmer each had singles for Trigg County.  Sammie Jo Quisenberry smacked a home run for Crittenden County (1-1).

Trigg County will travel to Todd County Central today for a 5:45pm contest with the Lady Rebels (1-5).

Christian County 17 Hopkinsville 0

Christian County banged out 18 hits and blasted Hopkinsville 17-0 Thursday at Hoptown High.

Griffin Joiner had four hits and drove in two runs as every Lady Colonel starter had at least one hit.

Maggie Glass hit a two-run home run in the first inning, and Hannah Hodge added a three-run pinch home run in the fifth for Christian County (4-0).

Kayla Wade, Carly P'Pool, Annie Coleman, and Casey Hayes each had two hits for the Lady Colonels.

Hannah Driver (above) picked up the win, allowing one hit in 2 2/3 innings and struck out five.

Hopkinsville (1-5) got singles from Brittany Castle, Mallory Smithson, and Callie Tackett.

Christian County will play in a tournament in Murfreesboro, Tennessee this weekend before traveling south to Alabama to play in a tourney there next week.

Hopkinsville will next play April 12 against University Heights.

University Heights 12 Fort Campbell 3

University Heights scored six runs in the first inning and three more in the second and mad eit stand up in a 12-3 win over Fort Campbell Monday in Hopkinsville.

Before the game, players, coaches, fans, and family joined in remembering Elizabeth Atwood, a UHA infielder who was killed in a traffic crash last month.  A blue and white cross with her name on it was erected beyond the right field fence, and players from both teams gathered around it for a short pregame memorial service.

On the field, Sarah Covington and Shayna Hudson each had three hits and 2 RBIs, and Hadley Burns had two hits and two RBIs as the Lady Blazers won their season opener.  UHA had 15 hits in the game, with all nine starters getting at least one hit.

Kaitlyn Lewis scattered three hits and gave up two earned runs, striking out 10.

Jenna Caracillo had an RBI single for the Lady Falcons (0-2), with Caitlyn Jay taking the pitching loss.

UHA (1-0) will host Livingston Central today, while Fort Campbell hosts Hopkinsville.

Lyon County was 10-13 last year, while UHA was 14-11.

Hopkinsville was 11-19 last year, while Dawson Springs was 14-9.

Trigg County to return to the All-A Classic

After a four-year absence, Trigg County will return to the All-A Classic in 2010-11.

The basketball coaches learned of their All-A Tournament matchups at a meeting last week.  Trigg County's boys will host Livingston Central Jan. 18, 2011 in the first round.  They will play the winner of Crittenden County and Lyon County in an upper bracket that matches this past year's district tournament.

Dawson Springs hosts Caldwell County in the bottom bracket wih University Heights getting a first round bye.

The semifinals will be Jan. 21, 2011 at Crittenden County High School with the championship game the following night.

For the ladies, Trigg County will play at Lyon County on Jan. 17, 2011.  They will play the winner of Dawson Springs and Caldwell County.

The lower bracket has Crittenden County at University Heights with Livingston Central getting a first round bye.

The semifinals will be Jan. 20, 2011.

Trigg's boys have played in the All-A championship four times, winning a title in 1997. The girls have advanced to the finals once.

Trigg County replaces Fort Campbell in the All-A.  Fort Campbell's enrollment exceeded the guidelines set forth by the All-A Classic.

The inclusion in the All-A Tournament also includes soccer, golf, volleyball, baseball, and softball, with those pairings to be announced later.

While Trigg's enrollment isn't declining, the consolidation of several smaller schools around the state have dropped Trigg into the bottom 125, which sets the All-A eligibility.  With Heath and Reidland getting consolidated into the new McCracken County High School, Trigg may stay in the All-A for a while.

However, the future fate of Fort Campbell in the All-A Classic isn't known with student growth on post growing.

University Heights softball player killed in car crash

Sad news today as Elizabeth Atwood, a junior infielder on the University Heights Academy softball team, was killed in a one-car crash on the Western Kentucky Parkway early this morning. 

Atwood was a passenger in a car driven by George Barnes, 18, of Hopkinsville.  The two were reportedly returning from Lexington after attending the Kentucky/Tennessee basketball game.

Olivia Higgins playing in Babe Ruth Softball World Series

Olivia Higgins, daughter of former Trigg County High School football coach Curtis Higgins, is playing with the Fern Creek under 16 softball team in the Babe Ruth Softball World Series in Concord, New Hampshire.

Fern Creek is 2-0 after the first day of pool play, beating Concord, N.H. 1-0 and the Plantation Athletic Club of Los Angeles 4-0.  Higgins was 0-for-4 in the two games with a walk and a stolen base.

Fern Creek will finish pool play with two games tomorrow.

Christian County begins play in state softball tournament Friday

Christian County begins play Friday in the Kentucky Softball State Tourmament at Jack Fisher Park in Owensboro.  The Lady Colonels (38-3) will play Shelby County (19-13) at 9am Friday.  Their second game will be at 12:15pm, win or lose.

The Lady Colonels are maing their third straight trip to the state tournament.  They advanced to the loser's bracket semifinals last year and the loser's bracket quarterfinals in 2007.  Their last state title came in 1996.

The Lady Colonels are hitting .364 as a team, with five starters hitting over .400.  Catcher Griffin Joiner is hitting .488 with a team-high 37 RBIs.  Eighth grader Maggie Glass is batting .457 with 18 RBIs.  Junior Stacey Harbold is batting .423 with a team-high six homers and 33 runs knocked in.  Hannah Driver (.402) and Hannah Hodge (.400) are also above .400, with Hodge (above) adding five homers and 35 RBIs.

On the mound, Hannah Driver is 22-2 with a 0.90 ERA.  Driver, who missed three weeks with a hamstring injury, has struck out 178 batters in 116 innings.  Harbold is 15-0 with a 0.52 ERA.  She has struck out 126 batters in 107 innings.

With 38 wins, Christian County is three wins away from setting a new state record for wins in a season.  The old mark of 40 was set by Greenwood in 2007 and Owensboro Catholic in 2003.

Shelby County is making their first state tourney appearance since 2004.  That year, the Lady Rockets advanced to the semifinals of the loser's bracket after an opening game loss.

Shelby County only has four seniors on their roster, led by third baseman Shauna Gramig, who is hitting .396 on the season.  Junior Dee Dee Davis is hitting .311, and sophomore Hannah Abbott is hitting .313.  As a team, Shelby County is hitting .277.

On the mound, senior Haliegh LeCompte has a record of 14-11 with an ERA of 2.15.  She has struck out 64 in 130 innings pitched.

A first round win by Christian County means a likely second round matchup with Mercy (29-10), who the Lady Colonels have already beaten 7-0 and 1-0 this year.

Christian County 2 Henderson County 0

Stacey Harbold pitched a three-hit shut out and belted an RBI double to help Christian County beat Henderson County 2-0 Wednesday in Hopkinsville.

Harbold (right) struck out six and walked just one in pitching the complete game.  Harbold is expected to see more time on the mound after usual starter Hannah Driver suffered a hamstring injury Tuesday.  CCHS head coach David Joiner said Driver could miss two to three weeks.

Griffen Joiner added an RBI double in the third inning that plated Casey Castille. 

Christian County won their 15th straight game and improves to 31-2 on the season.  They travel to Marshall County today.

Russellville 6 Trigg County 5

Trigg County couldn't push across the winning run in the seventh inning and fell to Russellville 6-5 Monday.

Russellville broke open a 4-4 tie with a two-out, two-run triple.

Trigg County loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh but could only push across one run.

Morgan Parker had two hits, including a three-run double.  She also singled.  Dakota Littlejohn, Elizabeth Torian, Sheniqua Smithers, and Sierra Bush also singled for the Lady Wildcats, who fell to 2-10 with the loss.

Trigg County will host Fort Campbell today at 5:30pm at the Complex.  You can hear the game on Boomer Radio WKDZ/WHVO at 5:20pm.

Livingston Central 12 Trigg County 0

Trigg County showed some obvious signs on rust having not played a game in a week, losing 12-0 at Livingston Central Monday.  The 12-run loss was Trigg's first mercy rule loss since the second game of the season.

Livingston Central's Mariah Owen pitched a five-inning no-hitter, fanning three and walking five.  She also doubled and drove in three runs at the plate.

The Lady Cardinals took command of the game with a 10-run second inning and were helped by six Trigg County errors.

Livingston Central (17-8) wrapped up a perfect run through the district with a 6-0 mark.  They are 17-8 overall and will take the top seed into the district tournament where they will again play Trigg County.

The Lady Wildcats fell to 2-8 overall and 0-6 in the district.  Trigg will host Russellville today at 5:30pm at the Complex.

Trigg County's softball game moved to Lyon County

Trigg County's softball game with Livingston Central has been moved to Lyon County tonight because the Complex field is too wet.

The game will actually be the second game of a doubleheader.  Lyon County (5-8) will play Crittenden County (5-9) at 5:30, followed by Trigg County (2-7) and Livingston Central (16-8) at 7:30pm.

Because the Fifth District uses seeding for its postseason tournament, all district games must be played before the district meeting to establish times and dates.

It will be Trigg's first game since last Tuesday.

Mother Nature forces cancellation of UHA Lady Blazer softball tournament

Bad weather has forced the cancellation of the UHA Lady Blazer softball tournament scheduled for Saturday.  Trigg County and UHA were among the teams slated to play in the day-long event in Hopkinsville.

Lady Wildcats are on the right track

You knew Trigg County's softball program was going to improve with the addition of Jim Perrin as head coach, even if for just a season.

While it doesn't show up in the win-loss record, take these numbers into consideration:

• Trigg County is 2-7.  Only one loss has been decided in five innings.  Last year, five of their first eight losses were called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.
• Trigg has allowed 56 runs in nine games.  Last year, they allowed 104 runs through nine gmes.
• In district play last year, Trigg lost two games to Lyon County by a total of 47-1 and two to Livingston Central by a total of 28-1.  This year, Lyon County has outscored Trigg 22-2, but Livingston Central has outscored Trigg 4-2 in theior only game.  They play again next week.
• Trigg has some winnable games on their schedule the final month of the season and could make a serious run at .500, somewhere Trigg hasn't finished at since 2004.

Todd County 3 Trigg County 1

Trigg County played well, but couldn't come up with the timely hit as Todd County claimed a 3-1 win over the Lady Wildcats Tuesday in Elkton.

Todd County scored a run in the third inning and two more in the fourth inning.  Trigg scored a single run in the fifth.  After leaving nine runners on base in a loss to Livingston Central Monday, the Lady Wildcats left eight more on base in the loss to the Lady Rebels.

Ashlee McGee had two singles, stole two bases, and scored Trigg's lone run.  Dakota Littlejohn, Morgan Parker, and Jennifer Hyde all had singles for Trigg County.

Nicole Aikens struck out eight hitters in getting the win for Todd County Central, who improved to 6-6 with the win.

Trigg County fell to 2-7 with the loss and will play again Saturday in the UHA Invitational.

Livingston Central 4 Trigg County 2

Trigg County came within a wisker of getting their first district win of the year but fell to Livingston Central 4-2 tonight in Smithland.

The loss means Trigg County will be the fourth seed in the district tournament and will likely play Livingston Central in the first round.

Trigg outhit Livingston Central six to three but committed four errors in the field.

Whitney Cain smacked a pair of doubles and drove in a run, while Ashlee McGee added a double and an RBI.  Morgan Parker, Jennifer Hyde, and Sierra Bush each had singles for Trigg (2-6).

Mariah Owen struck out eight batters for Livingston Central, who improved to 15-8 with the win.

Trigg County will travel to Todd County Central Tuesday.

Heritage Christian Academy sweeps doubleheader

We carried our first radio broadcast of a Heritage Christian Academy sporting event tonight as we brought you their softball sweep of Pioneer Christian Academy of Nashville.

Lauren Sloan (right) held PCA without a hit in the first game as HCA won 5-1.  Sloan struck out five and walked three.  Katy Ward had a pair of RBI singles for the Lady Warriors.

In the nightcap, PCA jumped out to a 1-0 lead, but HCA countered with two runs in the second inning and two more in the third to win 4-2.  Katelyn Daniel had a pair of hits for HCA, while Sloan struck out six and allowed just two hits for the Lady Warriors, who improved to 3-1 with the win.

Crittenden County 8 Trigg County 3

Crittenden County scored five runs in the ninth inning to beat Trigg County 8-3 tonight at the Complex.  The nine-inning affair is thought to be the longest game played by Trigg County since switching to fast pitch softball in 1995.

Trigg led 3-1 before Crittenden tied the game with two runs in the sixth inning.  Crittenden took advantage of seven Trigg errors, with seven of the eight Lady Rocket runs unearned.

Whitney Cain and Jennifer Hyde each had two hits for Trigg County, while Cain was the tough luck loser, striking out seven and walking just two.

Trigg County (2-5) will play Livingston Central Monday.

Trigg County 6 University Heights 3

Trigg County scored five times in the fourth inning to beat University Heights 6-3 in softball action Thursday at the Complex.  The win snapped a four-game losing streak overall and an eight-game losing streak to University Heights dating back to 2005.

Whitney Cain (right) allowed just three hits over seven innings and struck out nine, including five of the last six UHA hitters she faced.

Sierra Bush, Ashlee McGee, and Hanna Oliver each had two hits for Trigg County, who had 10 total.  Bush drove in two as part of the five-run fourth inning.

Shayna Hudson had two of UHA's three hits, while Sara Allen had a two-run single in the first inning.

UHA fell to 6-5 with the loss, while Trigg County improved to 2-4 and have matched their win total from all of last year.

The Lady Wildcats will host Crittenden County Friday at the Complex at 5:30.

Todd County Central 8 Trigg County 3

Todd County scored three times in the third and four more times in the fourth inning to hold off Trigg County 8-3 Tuesday at the Complex.

Trigg scored single runs in each of the first three innings before the Lady Rebels exploded for seven runs over the two inning span.

Dakota Littlejohn, Morgan Parker, and Elizabeth Torian each had two hits for Trigg County.  Whitney Cain struck out eight and walked two but was done in by seven Trigg errors in the field.

Trigg County is now 1-2 on the season and will play at Crittenden County Friday.

Trigg County game changes

Trigg County's baseball game today with Union County has been moved to Union County because Trigg's field is too wet.  The game time remains 5:30.

Trigg County's softball game today at Todd County Central has been postponed and will be rescheduled for a later date.

Christian County Lady Colonels hosting golf scramble

The Christian County girls' softball team is hosting a golf scramble Saturday at Western Hills Golf Course in Hopkinsville.

The costs to enter is $240 per team, which includes cart, green fees, and lunch.  The scramble begins at 8am.

The proceeds will benefit the Lady Colonel softball team.

David Joiner named Christian County softball coach

In a move that surprised few people, David Joiner was named the new girls' softball coach at Christian County Monday.  He replaced Tony Burkeen who retired after two years at CCHS.

Joiner is a long-time assistant coach, serving seven seasons under three different coaches. 

He inherits a team that loses three seniors from a squad that advanced to the state tournament where they finished fifth.

Christian County Lady Colonel Softball Banquet

Members of the Christian County Lady Colonels recognized at their annual softball awards banquet were (from left) Hannah Driver, Allie Blauser, Autumn Greenwell, Stacey Harbold, Hannah Hodge, Griffin Joiner, Casey Castille, and Taylor Queen.

Members of the Christian County Lady Colonel softball team were recognized at their annual awards banquet Monday night at Oakland Manor.

The banquet was an emotional one for Lady Colonel head coach Tony Burkeen, who is leaving the Lady Colonels after two seasons to become the principal at St. Mary High School.

In addition to the JV and state champion middle school team, players recognized were:

• Casey Castille - All-District; .300 Club (.352); most stolen bases (14); most sacrifice hits (8).
• Hannah Hodge - All-District; .300 Club (.363); four strikeouts in 113 at bats
• Griffin Joiner - Second-team All-State; .300 Club (.333); .986 fielding percentage
• Hannah Driver - All-Region; 17 pitching wins; 173 strikeouts
• Stacey Harbold - Honorable Mention All-State; All-Region; .300 Club (.356); 17 doubles; 33 RBIs; 1.39 ERA
• Taylor Queen - First Team Academic All-State; All-District; .300 Club (.323); most sacrifice hits (8)
• Autumn Greenwell - All-Region
• Allie Blauser - First-Team All-State; All-Region; All-District; .400 Club (.402); Kentucky Senior All-Stars; 47 hits; 33 runs; 19 walks; .539 on base percentage.

Also recognized was long-time Christian County High School trainer Jim Elks of in-Motion Sports, who is leaving to take a job with the Tennessee Titans.

The Lady Colonels were 33-12 and advanced to the elimination round of the State Tournament.

Christian County Lady Colonels named to All-State team

Two Christian County Lady Colonels have been named to the All-State team, and a third was named Honorable Mention.

Senior infielder Allie Blauser was named to the First Team All-State after batting .402 with 47 hits, 33 runs, and a .539 on base percentage for the Lady Colonels.

Sophomore catcher Griffin Joiner was named to the Second Team All-State after hitting .333 with a fielding percentage of .986.

Sophomore Stacey Harbold was named All-State Honorable Mention after hitting .356 with 17 doubles and 33 RBIs.  She also had a 1.39 ERA on the mound.

Christian County players named to All-State softball teams

Two Christian County Lady Colonels were among the players named to the Kentucky Softball Coaches Association All-State teams announced Sunday.

Infielder Allie Blauser was named to the Class 3A All-State First Team.  Among the others on the first team were Miss Softball Kirsten Allen of Ryle and Kentucky signee Rachel Riley of state champion Greenwood.

Christian County catcher Griffen Joiner was named to the All-State Second Team and pitcher Stacey Harbold was named All-State Honorable Mention.

Others named to the All-State teams were Cassee Layne of Reidland and Kari Jo Harris of Hopkins Central, both named to the Class 2A All-State First Team.  Lauren Ward of Hopkins County Central was named to the Class 2A Second Team.

In Class 1A, Ballard Memorial teammates Kelsie Beardsley and Alexis Rodgers were named to the Second Team, and Dawson Springs pitcher Katrina Carter was named Honorable Mention.

Christian County wins two of three at state tourney

After losing their opening game in the State Softball Tournament, Christian County rallied to win two games today and advance to Saturday's elimination round.

Christian County will play Reidland Saturday morning at 9am.  The Lady Colonels (32-11) will have to win six games Saturday to claim the state championship.  Reidland (32-6-1) lost their opener to Lawrence County 2-1 before coming back to beat Estill County 9-2 and Scott County 1-0.

Christian County beat Ballard 5-1 to advance in the elimination round.  The Lady Colonels scored twice in the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie.  Yezmine Smith drove in two more runs with a triple in the seventh inning.  Stacey Harbold drove in a run as part of her three-hit afternoon and pitched a complete game on the mound, allowing just four Ballard hits and recording four strikeouts.

The Lady Colonels had no trouble getting past George Rogers Clark (28-14), scoring six runs in the second inning on their way to a 13-0 win.  Hannah Hodge had three hits and two RBIs for the Lady Colonels.

In the opener, Greenwood beat Christian County for a third time this year as Rachel Riley struck out ten in the 6-0 Lady Gator win.  Christian County had just four hits in the game.

Today's games cancelled

Trigg County's games today have been cancelled because of the rain.

The Wildcat baseball team was scheduled to host Hopkins County Central.  Their next game is at Muhlenberg South Friday.  They will play at Marshall County Saturday.

Today's softball game at Mayfield has also been cancelled.  In fact, Trigg County's Friday game at Caldwell County has been cancelled because of Caldwell County's graduation, also scheduled for Friday.

Saturday's home game with University Heights, which was originally scheduled to be aired on Boomer Radio, has also been cancelled.

Game recaps will appear next week.

The next Trigg County softball game will be Monday against Lyon County in the Fifth District Softball Tournament at Lyon County.

Todd County 9 Trigg County 1

Todd County Central scored in every inning on their way to a 9-1 win over Trigg County Saturday at the Todd County Round Robin in Elkton.

Ray Ann Moore had a double for the Lady Rebels, who won the event to improve their record to 12-9.

Hanna Oliver and Samantha Furr each had hits for the Lady Wildcats, who fell to 2-20 on the season.

The Lady Wildcats are scheduled to play at Dawson Springs Tuesday.

University Heights 11 Trigg County 0

University Heights scored seven times in the fifth inning to blank Trigg County for the second time in a week 11-0.  The game was part of the Todd County Central round robin Saturday in Elkton.

Kalesha Williams had two singles, and Elizabeth Torian added another hit off UHA pitcher Katelyn Lewis, who struck out nine and walked one in five innings.

Sara Allen, Elizabeth Atwood, and McKenzie Hamby each had two hits as part of the 10-hit Lady Blazer attack.

UHA improved to 8-15 with the win.
