Local horse wins first race Sunday

Teeny Liz, the two-year old filly from Winners Circle Stables in Hopkinsville, won her first race Sunday at the Fair Grounds Race Course in New Orleans.

She went off at 9/1 and paid $21.80 for her wire to wire win in just her second race.

Winners Circle Stables is located on Cadiz Road and owned in part by Kevin Atwood.  Teeny Liz has several local owners and is named after Charlene Sheehan's late sister, who was nicknamed Teeny, and for Atwood's daughter Elizabeth, who was killed in a car wreck nearly two years ago.

Teeny Liz is trained by Larry Jones of Hopkinsville and is the great, great granddaughter of the legendary Secretariat.

Trigg County Hall of Fame banquet to be held Saturday

The second Trigg County Athletic Hall of Fame Class  will be honored this weekend at the Friday night basketball and a banquet on Sunday.

Athletes, coaches, and contributors to athletic programs at TCHS were considered for induction to the hall of fame, based on criteria that includes, but is not limited to, athletic accomplishments (both in high school and college), contributions to the athletic program, community impact, and citizenship. 

The second Trigg County Hall of Fame class consists of:

The Hall of Fame class will be honored at Trigg County's Friday night game with Community Christian.  A banquet will be held at the school cafeteria on Saturday.  Doors open at 4pm.  Dinner will begin at 5pm, with the induction ceremony to start at 6pm.  Advanced tickets can be purchased in the high school office for $10.

Trace Pound finishes fourth at Southern Regional Waterski Championship

 

Trace Pound of Hopkinsville finished fourth at the Southern Regional Waterski Championship July 27 in Mulberry, Florida.

Pound skied three balls at 30mph and missed out on a three-way tie by just one ball.  Pound, who is 9, competed against skiers from Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

Trace will head to Chicago next week to compete in the national championships.

Trigg Upward plays at Municipal Auditorium

Trigg County's 10-11 year-old Upward Basketball players got to play at halftime of the OVC Tournament semifinal game between Morehead State and Austin Peay Friday night at Municipal Auditorium in Nashville.

Trigg County High School Athletic Hall of Fame inaugural class

 

The inaugural class of the Trigg County Athletic Hall of Fame, consisting of Al Baker, Joe Graham, Millard Griffin, Karen Johnson, Paul Perdue, Eddie Radford, George Radford, David Sadler, Jim Wallace, and Willie Wilson.

In the coming days, we'll have the audio of each member's induction into the TCHS Hall of Fame.

 

TCYAA Baseball and Softball registration is underway

Registration is underway for baseball and softball leagues at the Trigg County Recreation Complex.  There will be leagues for kids:

• age 5-12 in softball
• age 5-15 in baseball 
• There will also be a 3-and-4-year-old co-ed Tee Ball league. 

The cost is $50 per child, with additional siblings costing $40 each.

Registration forms will also be made available in the Trigg County Schools next week.

There will be an evaluation day for all players Saturday, March 12 at the Trigg County Recreation Complex for both baseball and softball. Times will be announced later.

The 2011 season will begin the week of April 11.

Players can be registered online at www.tcyaa.org.

Trigg County Hall of Fame Banquet will be Saturday

The Trigg County High School Athletic Hall of Fame will induct its inaugural class Saturday with a banquet at the school.

The 10-member class will also be recognized between games of Trigg County’s basketball doubleheader with Caldwell County Friday tonight.  Trigg County boys' basketball coach Mike Wright expects the games to be played despite neither school being in session today.

The banquet will be Saturday at 5pm at the school cafeteria.  Tickets are $7 dollars which includes a catered meal.  Tickets will be sold at the door.

Trigg County Upward gets recognized in article

Trigg County's Upward Basketball Program received some regional recognition in the Southern Baptist Western Recorder.  The story featured the Upward scholarship program.  There's also a picture of at least one good looking kid in the story.

Trigg County hosting youth soccer tournament Saturday

Trigg County will be hosting a youth soccer tournament Saturday starting at 8am at the John Rufli Soccer Complex on Blue Springs Road (Kentucky 1489).

The tournament will begin at 8am and should attract over 20 teams, according to Trigg County Youth Soccer president Matthew Hunter.

The cost is $3 a car.

Applications are now being accepted for the position of Trigg County ABA Basketball.

Job Description: Work with the ABA board members in providing a successful and enjoyable basketball program for the youth of Trigg County.

Trigg County U-10 soccer team wins Bluegrass State Games gold medal

Trigg County's U-10 soccer team the Trigg Thunder won the gold medal at the Bluegrass State Games in Lexington over the weekend.  The team is coached by Kevin Alexander and Eddie DeHart.

The Thunder beat the Winchester Scorpions to win the gold medal.  The team is one of the first, and possibly the first, Trigg County team to win a gold medal at the Bluegrass State Games.

Team members are Benson Stallons, Clay Stevens, Zeb Dehart, Riley Stallons,Troy Alexander, Carter Boyd, Stewart Boyd, Kyle Bleidt and Caleb Davis.

RA Track Meet winners

The Little River Baptist Association held their annual Royal Ambassador Track Meet Sunday at Perdue Field.  Over 130 boys took part in the event.

Team winners in the K-3rd grade division was Cadiz Baptist Church.  Oak Grove Baptist won the 4-6 grade division; Crossroads Fellowship won the 7-9 grade division; and New Jeruselem Baptist won the 9-12 grade division.

Softball league signup deadline Feb. 24

The Trigg County Recreation Complex is trying to establish a girls' softball league for ages 5-10 for this summer.  Any parent wishing for their daughter to play in this league needs to sign them up prior to Tuesday, Feb. 24.

The early deadline is so that the recreation board can determine if there is enough interest to have a girls' softball league separate from the normal co-ed baseball leagues.

Signup forms can be found at the Trigg County Elementary School and online at www.triggcountycomplex.com.

Trigg County Complex signups underway

Signups are underway for all summer baseball leagues at the Trigg County Recreation Complex.

Registration forms are available in the school systems and may also be obtained online at www.triggcountycomplex.com.

Registration fees are unchanged from last year. ($40 for 1, $70 for 2, and $85 for 3 or more)

The deadline to sign up is March 10.

There will be leagues for 3-4 year-old tee ball, 5-6 year-old pee wee baseball, 7-8 year-old pee wee baseball, 9-10 year old little league, 11-12 year-old little league, 13-15 year-old Babe Ruth baseball, and 5-10 year-old girls softball.

Hopkinsville Rec Department having March 3 meeting for softball leagues

The Hopkinsville Recreation Department will have an organizational meeting for the following softball leagues -- Men's Open and Industrial, Church Co-ed, Open Co-ed, and Men's Church league.  There will also be a meeting for a summer kickball league.

The meeting will be Tuesday, March 3 at 5:30pm at the rec department on Thomas Street.

Grayson Ford of Trigg County was part of the Harlem Globetrotters act Thursday night in Clarksville.  He was brought onto the floor and hit a shot, winning a Globetrotters jersey.

Trigg Upward registration continues through Nov. 6

Trigg County Upward Basketball & Cheerleading registration is going on now.  Upward Basketball is for girls & boys in grades K-6. 

Upward Cheerleading, which is brand new this year, is for girls in grades K-6.  Registration for basketball & cheerleading continues through November 6.  Sign-up will be held today at the Cadiz Baptist Church from 8:30 to 12:00.

One of the best TV commericials airing during the Beijing Olympics is the Nike commercial that intertwines the U.S. men's basketball team and footage of Marvin Gaye singing the National Anthem at the 1983 NBA All-Star Game. 

Marvin was tragically shot and killed by his father during an arguement a little over a year after his rendition of the Star Spangled Banner.

A must read for youth league coaches and fans

I came across this column by Paul Daughtery on NKY.com after it was linked to Bluegrasspreps.com.

It is a must read for all youth leage baseball coaches and fans.  The sad thing is, I saw waaaay too much if this at the Complex this summer.

Here is some of the text:

You coach a 7- and 8-year-old coaches' pitch baseball team. Seen your sportsmanship lately?

Maligned an umpire? Shoved an opposing coach, belittled a player? Better get busy. It's tournament time. Here's how you do it:

Badger umpires. Constantly. Embarrass them, tell them they're stupid, make them cry. They're 12 years old. They can take it. Make it so they'll look forward to going home and being told to clean their rooms. And the rooms of their big sisters.

They're making $20 a game. That's big money for a kid. Make them earn it. Stand behind the screen and argue balls and strikes. Stand at the end of the bench and teach 'em words they've only seen on a bathroom wall on the New Jersey Turnpike. Tell the child umpire to take it like a man.

Jim Perrin named Trigg County athletic director

Long-time Christian County softball coach Jim Perrin has been named the new athletic director at Trigg County High School.

TCHS principal Neal Cummins said in a news release that Perrin was selected after consulation with the high school site-based decision making council.

"Perrin is very familiar with the responsibilities of the position, as he served in the same capacity at Christian County High School for five years," Cummins said.

Perrin resigned last month as head softball coach at Austin Peay State University after four seasons.  Prior to that, he coached at Christian County for 20 years, compiling a 632-147 record.  His teams won four state titles, finished second four times, and won 11 regional championships.

He also won a state championship as wrestling coach at Christian County.

In 1989, Perrin was named athletic director at Christian County where he served for five years.

"He will be an asset to the program in Trigg County.  He is highly respected in the education and athletic community," Cummins said.

Perrin replaces Doug Gloyd, who stepped down as athletic director in May after a year and a half in the position.

KHSAA Dead Period begins today

The KHSAA Dead Period begins today and runs through July 9.

During this time, athletes cannot use school facilties for athletic purposes and coaches may not have contact with players in an athletic setting.

The Trigg County Riding Club will be sponsoring an all breed horse show Saturday at 5pm at the Trigg County Recreation Complex.

Graham Futrell: Pee Wee Homer

Once upon a time, I remember The Cadiz Record used to run a picture of the home run champ at the Pee Wee League and Little League level.  That was before my time there. 

The first home run I remember seeing hit in person on the little league field was by Al Baker.  He parked one into the trees in centerfield.  I think the trees are still there today.

The first softball home run I remember seeing hit was by Tony Holland, which came several years before the famous collision and subsequent brawl at home plate with the late Fred DeLoach.

There hasn't been too many Pee Wee League (over the fence) homers in recent years, but 7-year-old Graham Futrell of the Yankees smacked a homer in a game last week.

Congrats to Graham, the son of Stacey and Janay Futrell.  He now has tied me for career, all-time homers hit at the Complex.  One.  And he still has his best baseball in front of him.

Hoptown Angels finish second in tourney

The Hoptown Angels finished second at a weekend tournament in Jasper, Indiana, finishing with a 4-1 record.  Tyler Estes had a walk-off grand slam to beat Unionville, Ind., and had an inside-the-park grand slam in a win over the South Indiana Hustlers.  Estes hit a 3-run homer in the championship game loss to the D.C. Crush.

Trigg County ABA Training team is state champs

The Trigg County ABA Traning team won the state championship Saturday in Henderson.  Trigg beat Henderson White, Hopkinsville "A", and Hopkinsville "B" before knocking off Hopkinsville "B" 42-29 in the title game.  Members of the team, who received an escort into town by the Cadiz Police Department, are (Front row) Reid Kuberski, Demaria Nance, Ethan Dossett and Tyler Allen.  (Second row) Jamar Humphries, Reggie Radford, Tyreke Wilson, Tyler Spano and Reagan Hyde.  (Back Row) Austin Calhoun, Coach Scottie Nance and Jonta Acree.

Trigg ABA JV team finishes third at state tournament

The Trigg County JV "A" team finished third at the state tournament Saturday in Henderson.  Trigg County beat Henderson White and Madisonville, but lost to Henderson Maroon and Hopkinsville "A".  Team members are (front row) Raekwon Stubblefield, Clark Adams, Corbin Estes, Ben Wigand and Cardale Bacon.  (Back row) Kullen Garner, Luke McKenzie, Nick Choate, Brien Dossett, Warren Jones, Cole Gardner and Trace Kuberski.  The team is coached by Mike Estes.

Upward League celebration night is tonight

The Trigg County Upward League will conclude their season events tonight with their celebration night at Wildcat Gym.  The night will feature a highlight video, gifts for the players, and giveaways.

The highlight of the night will be a performance by Dave "Travelin" Davlin, who performs a juggling, handling, and spinning show.  Davlin has performed at halftime of several NBA games and has his own show in Branson, Missouri.

Upward players, coaches, volunteers, and their families as well as the public is invited to attend.  Doors open at 5:30pm with the event starting at 6pm.

Free sports physicals Saturday

Jennie Stuart Medical Center will be hosting free physicals Saturday at the hospital in Hopkinsville.

All Trigg County High athletes are encouraged to get the free physical.  Trigg County's time slot begins at 9am. There will be a bus leaving from the field house at 8:15am. Anyone interested should see TCHS athletic director Doug Gloyd for physical forms and more infomation.

The forms need be filled out prior to attending and must be signed by a parent in order to receive your physical.

Youth soccer clinic to be Saturday

The Trigg County Youth Soccer Association will have a U-10 soccer clinic Saturday at 9am at the Trigg County High School Gym Cadiz Baptist Church Annex on Main Street.

All U-10 players who have signed up are invited to attend, and registration forms will be available for players to sign up.

Soccer forms for U-6 and U-8 are also due Saturday.  Their clinic date will be announced later.

Twin lakes to host Wal-Mart Bass Fishing tourney Saturday

The LBL Division of the $8.8 million Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League will descend on Kentucky and Barkley Lakes in Gilbertsville Saturday for the first of five regular-season events.

As many as 200 boaters and 200 co-anglers are expected to compete in the tournament, which will award as much as $45,000 in cash, including a top award of $6,000 in the Boater Division.

The winning co-angler will earn as much as $3,000 cash.  Snickers Big Bass awards of up to $1,000 and $500, respectively, will also be awarded in the Boater and Co-angler Divisions. 

Anglers may register for the tournament online at FLWOutdoors.com or by calling (270) 252-1000. Onsite registration will be held Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Wal-Mart store located at 310 W. 5th St. in Benton.  Entry fees are $200 for boaters and $100 for co-anglers.

Kentucky Dam Marina in Gilbertsville will host the takeoff and weigh-in at 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.

The top 40 boaters and 40 co-anglers in each of the BFL’s 28 divisions at the end of the season advance to a no-entry-fee Regional Championship where boaters fish for a new Ranger boat and a Chevy truck and co-anglers fish for a new Ranger boat.

Trigg County hosted the ABA Basketball South Regionals over the weekend, and the Trigg County Training Boys "A" Team went undefeated against the Hopkinsville A & B teams to win the tournament and receive a #1 seed at this weekend's atate tournament in Henderson.  Team members are (Back from left) Tyler Spano, Reggie Radford, Jamar Humphries, Tyreke Wilson, Coach Scottie Nance, Austin Calhoun and Reagan Hyde (Front from left) Demaria Nance, Tyler Allen, Ethan Dossett, Tyler Estes and Reid Kuberski.

Trigg ABA team wins second straight tourney title

The Trigg County Training League ABA All-Star team has won back-to-back tournaments.

Trigg won the Hopkinsville Invitational over the weekend and took first place in the Webster County Invitational two weeks ago.

A must read if your child is an athlete

I came across this article in the Clarksville Leaf-Chronicle, written by Tom Kuyper of athletesintraining.com.

I kept hearing the tune "Cat's in the Cradle" by Harry Chapin while reading this, but is a very good read if your kids play sports.
