Tyler Mitchell, Emma Talley advance in amatuer golf tourneys

Trigg County's Tyler Mitchell is tied for third place after two rounds of the Kentucky State Amateur Golf Tournament being played at the Cardinal Club in Louisville. 

After a first round 68 (-3) that saw him tied for the lead, Mitchell carded an even-par 71 Wednesday with a round that included a birdie, a bogey, and 16 pars. 

Mitchell is four shots behind Murray State University golfer Nick Newcomb of Benton, who stands at seven-under par and has a two-shot lead in his quest to win his second straight state amateur.

The final round will be played today.

Meanwhile, Princeton golfer Emma Talley has advanced to the round of 32 in the 112th Amateur National Championship in Monroe, Michigan.  Talley advanced after two rounds of stroke play.  On Wednesday, she defeated Meredith Fairburn of Ontario, Canada 1 up.

Today, Talley will play another round of match play against Moriya Jutanugarn of Bangkok, Thailand.

 

 

Trigg County wins All-A region golf title

Playing in the own backyard, Trigg County won their second straight All-A Classic regional golf title Saturday at Arowhead Golf Course, edging University Heights by two shots for the title.

Trigg County shot a team score of 331, while UHA checked in with a 333. 

Carter Sholar proved to be the hero for the Wildcats, coming in with a 79 to lead the way.  Cole Gardner shot an 80, Nick Choate an 81, and Kullen Garner shot a 91. 

For UHA, Cameron Allen and Austin Knight each shot an 80.  John Stevenson shot an 84, and Tadd Switzer shot an 89.

Caldwell County's Daniel Taylor was the medalist, shooting a 71.  Both he and Lyon County's Ben Piercefield qualified for the state All-A Tournament as individuals.

Both Trigg and UHA qualified their teams for the state All-A Tournament, which will be held September 10 at The Silos near Paducah.

For the ladies, Trigg County's Madison Chaney took home first place with an 84, which was one shot better than UHA's Anna Moore.

 

 

Emma Talley shoots a 30 at Boots

Caldwell County's Emma Talley shot a 6-under-par 30 on the back nine at Boots Randolph Tuesday to claim medalist honors in a match with Trigg County, Livingston Central, and Lyon County.

Talley's round consisted of four birdies and an eagle on the par-5 15th hole.  Talley had a shot to break 30 but had to "settle" for pars on 17 and 18.

Madison Chaney shot a 47 for Trigg County, and Sierra Bush added a 50.  Allie Claxton shot a 46 for Lyon County.

For the guys, Trigg County beat Lyon County by 12 shots and Caldwell County by 17 to claim the five-way match.

Trigg's Cole Gardner and Caldwell County's Daniel Taylor shared medalist honors with a 1-over 37.  Nick Choate added a 38, Austin Apsley a 40, and Carter Sholar a 45.

 

Trigg finishes 12th at Region I Golf Tournament

Trigg County finished 12th at the Region I Golf Tournament Tuesday at Drake Creek in Ledbetter.

Nick Choate led Trigg with a 77, followed by Cole Gardner's 82, and Ryan Russell's 91.  Derek Rogers added a 96, and Austin Apsley had a 101.

Murray senior Jordan Smith beat St. Mary sophomore Joey Mayo in a playoff to take region medalist honors.  Calloway County took first place as a team, and St. Mary was second.  Calloway is coached by former Trigg County coach Steve Smith.

Conner Gates of Hopkinsville qualified for the state tournament at the Region II Tournament held at Lakeshore County Club in Madisonville.

 

Trigg County takes 10th at Girls Region Golf Tournament

Trigg County's girls finished 10th at the Region I Golf Tournament Monday at Paxton Park Golf Course in Paducah.

Karli Bush had the low score for Trigg County with a 92, followed by Sierra Bush (105), Madison Chaney (110), and Lyndsey Choate (135).

Paducah Tilghman senior April Butler beat Lone Oak eighth grader Anna Hack on the first playoff hole to take medalist honors.  Both shot a 73 for 18 holes.

However, Lone Oak took the team title by three shots over Tilghman.

Allison Clayton shot a 96 for Lyon County, and Aubrey Riggs had a 99.

Meanwhile, Anna Moore of University Heights Academy missed qualifying for the state tournament by three shots after shooting a 90 at the Region II Golf Tournament at Ben Hawes State Park in Owensboro.

The Boys Region I Golf Tournament gets underway today at Drake Creek Golf Course in Ledbetter.  The Boys Region II Golf Tournament will be hosted by Lakeshore Country Club in Madisonville.

 

Emma Talley helps U.S. to huge first day at U.S. Junior Ryder Cup

Caldwell County golfer Emma Talley was part of two winning pairs as the U.S. Junior Ryder Cup team jumped out to a 9-3 lead over the European counterparts Monday at Gleneagles Resort in Perthshire, Scotland. 

The U.S. won five of the six foursomes matches Monday morning, then extended their advantage by dropping only two mixed fourball matches in the afternoon. The event concludes today with 12 singles matches.

Talley and U.S. teammate Cassy Isagawa won three straight holes late to top Kelly Tidy and Amy Boulden 3-and-2.

In the afternoon, Talley teamed with fellow Kentuckian Justin Thomas of St. Xavier to win a fourball match 4-and-3.

Both Thomas and Talley were granted an exemption from this week's high school region tournaments by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association and will be eligible for next week's state tournament.

Emma Talley cleared to play in state golf tournament

Caldwell County's Emma Talley has been cleared to play in the state golf tournament.

In a press release from the Kentucky High School Athletic Association --

In a conference call on Friday, September 10, the Board of Control, at the request of Commissioner Julian Tackett, reviewed a potential issue related to participation in the postseason golf tournaments by Emma Talley of Caldwell County and Justin Thomas of St. Xavier High School.

Talley and Thomas were two of twelve individuals in the nation selected to participate in the Junior Ryder Cup, the most prestigious amateur golf representing the United States. The event is being held September 27 and 28 at the Gleneagles Resort in Gleneagles, Scotland, and requires travel by the two students, who have represented their schools continually during this regular season, at the time of the scheduled regional tournaments.

The Board approved Tackett’s recommendation that in the event that the teams from these two schools do not qualify for the state tournament, the two individuals would be added to the state tournament as individual participants. If the teams qualify, a waiver is not necessary as any individual on the regular season participant list can substitute on a qualifying team.

“It seems nearly unconscionable that we would ask these two individuals, who have represented their school all season and throughout their careers, to choose between representing their country and representing their school at the most exciting time of the year”, Tackett said. “Working with Assistant Commissioner Butch Cope, who formerly headed our golf operations, we worked the last few weeks to find a way for these two to be able to play in our state tournament should they desire to do so, and not impact any other student-athlete. It would be different if this were any other event, or if these were not regular season participants throughout the year. It seems like the perfect win-win situation that benefits kids, which should always be our primary objective where possible.”

Both Talley and Thomas have already played an 18-hole competitive round on the respective regional courses that will be used for their school, and that score will be used to place them in first-day pairings should the waiver be necessary.

Trigg wins quad golf match

Trigg County continued their strong play on the links with a quad match win Thursday at Boots Randolph Golf Course.

Trigg's score of 161 was 10 better than Community Christian and better than Livingston's 188 and Todd County Central's 189.

Nick Choate led Trigg County with a 2-over 38.  Derek Rogers shot a 40, Austin Apsley a 41, Ryan Russell and Cole Gardner a 42.

Community Christian's Clayton Ely took medalist honors with a 1-over 37.

In girls' play, Trigg County edged Livingston Central by one shot.  Karli Bush was the medalist with a 44.  Madison Chaney added a season low score of 46.  Sierra Bush shot a 58, and Lyndsey Choate had a 59.

Trigg County will compete in the All-A Region Golf Tournament Saturday at Deer Lake Golf Course in Salem.

Cole Gardner records an ace for Trigg County in golf match

Cole Gardner aced the eighth hole at Boots Randolph Golf Course on his way to an even-par 36 in helping lead Trigg County to a 57-shot win over Crittenden County Thursday.

Gardner took medalist honors for Trigg, who got a 41 from Ryan Russell, a 44 from Nick Choate, and a 51 from Austin Apsley.

Jordan Enoch shot a 50 to lead Crittenden County.

Trigg County will host Christian County, Hopkinsville, Murray, and Calloway County Tuesday at Boots Randolph Golf Course.

Meanwhile, Christian County shot a 150 to beat Hopkinsville by nine shots and Muhlenberg County by 15 Thursday at Western Hills Golf Course.

Jon Grabara was medalist with a 36 for Christian County.  Dallas Gates shot a 37 for Hopkinsville, followed by Jack Gardner with a 39.

Michaela Young shot a 49 to lead Hopkinsville's girls team.

Local golfers to compete in Kentucky Amateur Golf Tournament

Several local golfers will compete in the 2010 AT&T Kentucky State Amateur Golf Championship that gets underway Tuesday at Gibson Bay Golf Course in Richmond.

Tyler Mitchell, who tied for 12th last year, will compete along with Mitchell Moore and Anthony Dempsey of Hopkinsville; Patrick Hibbs of Madisonville; and Travis Thompson of Benton.

Four rounds will be played Tuesday and Wednesday with those making the cut playing Thursday for the title.

 

Emma Talley wins fifth straight region golf title

Emma Talley weathered windy conditions to put together a solid round and win her fifth straight Region I golf title Monday at the Ballard County Country Club.

The Caldwell County sophomore had 14 pars and finished at three-under par, which was eight shots better than Heath's Christine Cash.

Both will advance to the state tournament in Bowling Green.

For Trigg County, Karli Bush shot a 92, followed by Sierra Bush (97), Madison Chaney (115), and Alyssa Maxey (145).

The boys region tournament will be played Tuesday at Miller Golf Course in Murray.

Region golf tournaments begin today

Caldwell County sophomore Emma Talley shoots for her fifth straight region golf title today when she takes the course in the Region I Golf Tournament at the Ballard County Country Club.

Calloway County's Katie Tindall and Heath's Christine Cash expect to give Talley her toughest competition in the 18-hole event.

For Trigg County, Sierra Bush, Karli Bush, Alyssa Maxey, and Madison Chaney will compete in the event.

In Region II, the boys tournament will be held at the Madisonville Country Club.  Muhlenberg County is the favorite to capture the title.

The top two teams and top four individuals not on those two teams advance to the state tournament in Bowling Green.

Trigg golfers take second at Tri-meet

Trigg County finished second in a triangular golf match Tuesday at Boots Randolph Golf Course.

Cole Gardner and Nick Choate each shot a 41 for Trigg, while Trent Parrent carded a 44, and Ryan Russell shot a 52. 

Livingston Central's Chris Martin shot an even-par 36 to take medalist honors.

Jordan Walters shot a 46 to lead Todd County Central.

Livingston edged Trigg by three shots -- 175-178, while Todd County was third with a score of 242.

For the ladies, Karli Bush shot a 53 to lead Trigg County.  Madison Chaney shot s 61, Sierra Bush a 62, and Alyssa Maxey a 74.

Trigg County will host Hopkinsville, Mayfield, and Caldwell County in a quad match Thursday at Boots Randolph Golf Course.

In other golf action, Hopkinsville beat Christian County and University Heights in a triangular match at the Links at Novadell.

Dallas and Conner Gates of Hopkinsville shared medalist honors with a 38.  Jordan Gary and Jack Gardner each had a 39, Dayton Jones a 45, and Brendan Jones a 46.

For UHA, Cameron Allen shot a 39, John Stevenson and Kyle Barbee each had a 43, and Chandler West had a 47.

Hopkinsville won the team competition with a score of 154.  Christian County was second with a 156, and UHA had a 172.

For the ladies, Michaela Young tied Christian County's Madelyn Pelletier for medalist honors with a 53.

Hopkinsville will host Dawson Springs Thursday at Western Hills Golf Course.

UHA returns to action next Tuesday at the Hopkinsville Golf and Country Club against both Hopkinsville and Christian County.

Trigg finishes second at golf tri-match

Trigg County finished second out of three teams at a triangular golf match Tuesday at Boots Randolph Golf Course.

Trent Parrent led Trigg with a 38, followed by Cole Gardner with a 39, Josh Lowe (40) and Derek Rogers (41).

Calloway County's Brock Simmons took medalist honors with a 35, one shot ahead of teammate Chasten Howard.

Calloway County won the meet with a team score of one-over par 145.  Trigg was second with 158, and Murray was third with 161.

For the ladies, Trigg County's Sierra Bush and Karli Bush each shot a 57, and Madison Chaney had a 58.  Calloway County's Katie Tindell shot a 2-over 38 to take medalist honors.

Trigg County will travel to Deer Lake Thursday to play Livingston Central.

Meanwhile, University Heights won another dual match, knocking off Crittenden County 168-182 at Western Hills Golf Course.

Cameron Allen was the match medalist with a 37, followed by Johns Stevenson (42), Taylor Chapman (43), Kyle Barbee (46), and Chandler West (46).

Crittenden County was led by Joey Pluskota's 43.

Monday's golf results

Jordan Gary shot a 38 for Hopkinsville in a dual meet with Todd County Central at the Hopkinsville Golf and Country Club Monday.  Dallas Gates added a 39, followed by Dayton Jones (40), Conner Gates (44), and Jack Gardner and Lucas Bolinger each with a 46.

Jordan Walters led Todd County with a 46.

Michaela Young shot a 49 for Hoptown to lead the females.

At Mineral Mound State Park, University Heights beat Lyon County 192-203.

John Stevenson and Kyle Barbee each shot a 47, and Cameron Allen and Taylor Chapman each shot a 49 for the Blazers.

Lyon County's Stuart Lipscomb took medalist honors with a 42.

UHA returns to the links today against Crittenden County at Western Hills.

Also today, Trigg County will host Calloway County and Murray at Boots Randolph Golf Course.

UHA falls to Madisonville in dual golf match

Madisonville beat UHA in varsity golf match 173-156 Thursday at Western Hills Golf Course.

Madisonville was led by Patrick Hibbs shooting a 34 and earning medalist honors.  Others were: David Rose 39; BJ Sisson 39; and Ben Gatlin 44 and Daniel Stewart 45.

UHA was led by Kyle Barbee who shot a 38 followed by Cameron Allen 42; John Stevenson 46; Taylor Chapman 47 and Mack Moore 48.

UHA will participate Saturday in the Hopkins County Central Storm Invitational at Madisonville Country Club.

Hoptown wins triangular match at Boots

Trigg County was edged by a single stroke by Hopkinsville in a triangular match Tuesday at Boots Randolph Golf Course.

Trent Parrent led Trigg with a 38, followed by Nick Schoate-39 Cole Gardner-39 Josh Lowe-40 and Derrick Rogers-42.

Dallas Gates took medalist honors for Hopkinsville with a 1-over 37, followed by Jordan Gary-39 Conner Gates-39 Jack Gardner-40 and Lucas Bolinger-46.

Hoptown's team score was 155.  Trigg was second at 156, and Crittenden County finished in third place with a team score of 186.

For the ladies, Sierra Bush and Karli Bush each shot a 54 to tie for first.  Hopkinsville's Michaela Young shot a 55.  Trigg's Madison Chaney and Christian County's Madeline Pelletier and Rachel Davis each shot a 61, and Kelsey Thomas had a 63.

Trigg County will be at Lyon County Thursday.

Trigg beats UHA in dual golf match

Trigg County beat University Heights in a dual golf match Monday at Western Hills Golf Course 158-175.

Trigg's Trent Parrent was the medalist with a score of 37, followed by Josh Lowe 39; Nick Choate 40; Derrick Rogers 42, and Cole Gardner 45.

Kyle Barbee led UHA with a 40, followed by John Stevenson 41; Cameron Allen 42; Taylor Chapman 52; and Mack Moore 53.

In the girls match, Trigg's medalist was Karlie Bush with a 46 beating out Anna Moore (UHA) 48. Madison Chaney of Trigg came in third with a score of 52.

UHA's JV team beat Dawson Springs 190-211.

UHA was led by Hendley Traughber with a 46, followed by Tyler Stewart 47; Dalton Putty 48; Chandler West 49, and Matt Brin 51.

Dawson Springs was led by Dillon Shelton and Justin Bullock with a 52; Grant McCuiston 53; Schyuler Storms 54, and Trevor McKnight 66.

Trigg County will host Christian County and Crittenden County today at Boots Randolph Golf Course.

UHA's next match will be Thursday against Madisonville at 4:00 PM at Western Hills.  

Tyler Mitchell finishes 34th at Kentucky Open

Tyler Mitchell of Cadiz finished tied for 34th place Thursday at the Powerbilt Kentucky Golf Open at the Club at Olde Stone near Bowling Green.

Mitchell opened play with an even par 72 in the first round but followed with an 83 in the second round to fall out of contention.  He finished play Thursday with a 4-over 76, which was tied for the 19th lowest score of the day.

Mitchell finished with a score of 231, which was 20 shots behind the winner, Matt Savage of Louisville.  Mitchell was tied for 16th among the amateurs in the event.

Hopkinsville's Logan Loftus shot a final round 83 and finished tied for 68th place.

Trigg golfers finish second at Crittenden tri-match

Trigg County finished second to Caldwell County in a triangular golf match Tuesday at the Marion Country Club.

Caldwell County's Andrew Knight took medalist honors with a 38, one shot better than Trigg County's Trent Parrent.

For the ladies, Sierra Bush shot a 50 to finish in second place.  Madison Chaney shot a 60, and Karli Bush added a 61.

Trigg County finishes 8th at Tilghman Invitational

Trigg County finished 8th out of 17 teams Saturday at the Paducah Tilghman Invitational at Paxton Park.

Josh Lowe led Trigg with a 78, while Nick Choate added an 84, Trent Parrent an 86, Cole Gardner an 87, and Derek Rogers a 94.

Trigg County' s score of 335 was 31 shots behind the winner, Calloway County.  Caldwell County finished in 10th place with a score of 345.  Daniel Taylor and Andrew Knight each shot an 81 for the Tigers.

St. Mary's Sammy Thompson won the match with a 69, one shot better than Ballard Memorial's Chase Laster.

Meanwhile, Hopkinsville took fourth place at the Madisonville Invitational Saturday, 17 shots behind the winner Muhlenberg County.

Jordan Gary led Hoptown with a 78, followed by Conner Gates with an 80, Dallas Gates an 82, Lucas Bolinger a 90, and Dayton Jones a 94.

Hopkinsvile fielded a second team in the tourney, with Brendan Jones, Jack Gardner, and Robby Massie each shooting a 90.

Trigg County will play at Marshall County today, while Hopkinsville will host Hopkins County Central in a dual match at the country club.

Austin Peay hosting a rules of golf clinic

Austin Peay State University head women’s golf coach Sara Robson will be hosting a “Rules of Golf” class, Saturday, July 18 in the Dunn Center in Clarksville.

The class, which will be held in Room 282 at the Dunn Center, is for “any golf lover who wants to learn or brush up on the USGA rules of golf,” said Robson, who is certified as a class A status in LPGA Teaching ranks and as a club professional.

As a result of last year’s strong response, Robson will host two seminar sessions that day, one running from 9:30-11:30 a.m. and the second from 1-3 p.m.

Cost for the event will be $10 per person, $20 per family.

Tyler Mitchell finishes 12th at Kentucky State Amateur

Tyler Mitchell of Cadiz trimmed one shot off his first round score and finished in 12th place in the rain-shortened Kentucky State Amateur Golf Championship in Nicholasville.

Mitchell followed his first round 73 with a 72, which was eight shots behind the winner, Jordan Blann of Bowling Green.

Mitchell will be a sophomore this year at the University of Charlotte.

Tyler Mitchell tied for 19th at Kentucky State Am

Tyler Mitchell of Cadiz is tied for 19th after the first round of the Kentucky State Amateur Golf Tournament in Nicholasville.

Mitchell shot a 73, which is six shots behind the leaders, Jim Volpenheim of Union and Jordan Blann of Bowling Green.

Hopkinsville's Logan Loftus shot an 85 and was tied for 143rd place.

The final round continues Tuesday at Champion Trace Golf Club.

Bradley Sutherland tied for 52nd at D-III Championship

Transylvania University golffer Bradley Sutherland is tied for 52nd place after the first round of the NCAA Division III Golf Championship at Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Sutherland had four bogeys and a birdie in his 3-over round of 75.  He is currently eight shots behind the leader.  Sutherland's teammate, Matthew Martin, is tied for fourth place with a 3-under 69.

Transylvania stands tied for 11th place after the first day, 18 shots behind Methodist University.

Another former Trigg County golfer begins his NCAA Tournament play today.

University of Charlotte freshman Tyler Mitchell will play in the first round of the NCAA Regionals at the Red Tail Golf Club in Sorrento, Fla.  The 49ers are the #12 seed in the regional, which includes top-seeded Georgia and eighth seed Kentucky.

Mitchell finished tied for 12th as Charlotte won the Atlantic 10 title for the fifth straight year and have posted top 10 finishes the past two years in the NCAA Championships.

Brad Sutherland wins second straight HCAC golf title

Transylvania's Bradley Sutherland won his second straight Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference golf title and was named conference player of the year for the second straight year.

Sutherland, of Cadiz, shot an even par 72 on the tourney's final day at North Bend, Ohio, which was two shots better than anyone else.  He finished the tournament at 17-over par, which was four shots ahead of teammate James Dawson.

As a team, Transy finished 37 shots ahead of second place Franklin College and will compete in the NCAA Division III Championship for the third year in a row May 13-16 at the PGA Golf Club at Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Sutherland second after three rounds of the HCAC Golf Tournament

Transylvania golfer Bradley Sutherland is in second place, one shot behind the leader after three rounds of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Sutherland, the defending conference champion, remained steady after three rounds, shooting a 5-over-par 77 at Ashton Oaks in North Bend, Ohio.

He is one shot behind Franklin College's Eric Whittaker, who rebounded from a first round 83 to shoot 5-over in the next two rounds combined.

There is no such drama for the team title where Transylvania takes a 25 shot lead into the final round.

The Pioneers are looking for their third consecutive HCAC Tourney win and a bid to the NCAA Division III Championship, scheduled for May 13-16 in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Tyler Mitchell helps lead Charlotte to A-10 golf title

Freshman Tyler Mitchell tied for 12th at the Atlantic 10 Golf Championship, helping lead Charlotte to their fourth straight A-10 title.

MItchell shot an 11-over par 224 at Howie-in-the-Hills, Florida, which was 12 shots behind the winner.

Charlotte captured its fourth consecutive Atlantic 10 Golf Championship and earned its fifth straight NCAA Tournament bid with the victory.

Charlotte (+20/872) became the first A-10 program to win four straight titles since Penn State won five consecutive crowns from 1986-91. Xavier shot 10-over for the day and 31-over par (883) for the tourney for its third runner-up finish in the past four years.

Trace Kuberski gets hole-in-one

Trace Kuberski aced the 133-yard par-3 fourth hole Sunday at Boots Randolph Golf Course.  He is an eighth grader at Trigg County Middle School and the son of Ken and Amy Kuberski-Vaughan.

Emma Talley in line to win state golf title

Caldwell County freshman Emma Talley is in line to win her first state golf title.

Talley is 10-under par with three holes to play after the second round was suspended due to darkness at the Bowling Green Country Club.  She is nine shots ahead of North Hardin eighth grader Lydia Gumm, who is 1-under par through 12 holes.

Talley shot a 7-under par in the first round, which for her got underway a day late because of Tuesday's rain.  She had seven birdies and an eagle on the 411 yard, par-5 second hole.

She has five birdies and two bogeys through 15 holes in the second round.

Play resumes Wednesday morning.

The team of Jim Strelec, Terry Irwin, Roger Kauppinen, and J.L. Hendricks (not pictured) won the Trigg County Wildcat Basketball golf scramble Sunday at Boots Randolph Golf Course.  The foursome shot a 15-under 57 on the afternoon, besting 11 other teams.

UHA falls in dual golf match

Kyle Barbee took home medalist honors for University Heights during a dual match with Muhlenberg South at the Links at NovaDell today.

Barbee shot a 37, while teammate John Stevenson shot a 40, and Cameron Allen shot a 41.  Sixth grader Dalton Putty recorded his first birdie and shot a 49.  Taylor Chapman added a 53.

Marcus Brown was the low scorer for Muhlenberg South with a 38.  The Suns shot a 160, which was seven shots better than the Blazers.

In other golf action, Trigg County played at Caldwell County today.  No scores were reported.

Hopkinsville, Christian County tie in golf match

Hopkinsville and Christian County tied for first place in a triangular match with University Heights Monday at the Hopkinsville Golf and Country Club.

Jordan Gary led Hopkinsville with a 38, followed by Dallas Gates (39), Conner Gates (41), Dayton Jones (45), Brendan Jones (47), and Lucas Bolinger (49).

John Stevenson led UHA with a 42, while Kyle Barbee shot a 43.  Taylor Chapman shot a 48, Cameron Allen and Tyler Stewart each shot 50s, and Dalton Putty shot a 56.

Hopkinsville's Marah Goff shot a 48 to lead the ladies.

UHA returns to action Tuesday at the Madisonville Country Club.

Hopkinsville wins quad golf match

Hopkinsville won a quadrangular golf match Thursday at the Links at NovaDell.  The Tigers edged Christian County by three shots, while UHA was third with 179 points, and Trigg County fourth with 180 points.

Jordan Gary led Hopkinsville with a 37, while Dayton Jones shot a 41.  Dallas Gates shot a 42, followed by Conner Gates (43), Brendan Jones (44), and Jack Gardner (47).

Cameron Allen led UHA with a 41, followed by Kyle Barbee (45), Taylor Chapman (46), John Stevenson (47), Tyler Stewart (48), and Dalton Putty (50).

Three Trigg County golfers shot a 46.  They were Nick Choate, Cole Gardner, and Derek Rogers.  Shaun Sizemore shot a 47, and Ryan Russell a 58.

For the ladies, Marah Goff shot a 42 for Hopkinsville and Sierra Bush a 56 for Trigg County.

Jordan Gary took medalist honors Tuesday at the Central City Country Club, shooting a 2-under 34.

Dallas Gates shot a 39, David Gardner had a 47, Jack Gardner a 48, and Lucas Bolinger a 52.

Muhlenberg North shot a 156, followed by Hopkinsville with a 168, and Ohio County with a 171.

Elsewhere, University Heights defeated Lyon County by eight shots Tuesday 174-182.

Kyle Barbee and John Stevenson each shot a 42 to lead UHA, while Taylor Chapman shot a 44, Cameron Allen a 46, and Tim Utley a 58.

Lyon County's Kell Blackburn took home medalist honors with a 39.

In JV golf, Christian County beat UHA 184-202.

Christian County wins JV golf match at the Links at Nova Dell

Christian County won a quadrangular JV golf mach at the Links of Nova Dell Tuesday.

Christian County's Jon Grabara took medalist honors with a 40, while Micah Houchens shot a 42, followed by T.J. Ferry (43), Drew Parmentier (44), Clayton Baker (45), and Ryan Reed (46).

Hopkinsville finished second with a 180.  Jack Gardner led the Tigers with a 43, followed by Dayton Jones (44), Robby Massie (45), Taylor Reynolds (48), Hutton White (51), Justin Pruitt (52), and Dylan Henderson (54).

Trigg County finished third with a team score of 189.  Cole Garnder and Ryan Russell each shot a 44, while Nick Choate shot a 46, Caleb Bush a 47, and Derek Rodgers a 49.

University Heights finished fourth with a score of 204.  Tim Utley shot a 46, Dalton Putty a 51, followed by Cameron Allen (53), Hendley Traughber (55), and Tyler Stewart (57).

Jordan Gary finishes seventh at the Dawson Springs Invitational

Hopkinsville was one of 24 teams that took part in the Dawson Springs Invitational Golf Match Saturday at Pennyrile State Park.

Jordan Gary took seventh place in the meet with a score of 71 over 18 holes.  Dallas Gates shot an 80, followed by Lucas Bolinger (82), David Gardner (87), and Brendan Jones (88).

As a team, Hopkinville shot a 320, which was three shots better than Christian County and 33 better than UHA.

Marshall County took the team title with Russellville finishing second.

Today, Hopkinsville and Christian County will play Madisonville at the Lakeshore Country Club.

Friday golf recap

University Heights swept a triangular match from Trigg County and Lyon County Thursday at Mineral Mound State Park.

UHA totaled 176 to Trigg's 186.  Lyon County was third with a 190.

Kyle Barbee took medalist honors with a 41, while Matt McGowan shot a 42 followed by John Stevenson (46), Cameron Allen (47), and Tim Utley (53).

Josh Lowe led Trigg County with a 42.  Cole Gardner shot a 47, followed by Nick Choate (48), and Shawn Sizemore (49).

Stuart Lipscomb was Lyon County's leading golfer with a 44.

Meanwhile, Hopkinsville had no trouble with Dawson Springs, winning a dual match at Pennyrile State Park 152-222.

The Hoptown golfers played without teammate Evan Campbell, who was injured in a car accident on the way to school.

Trigg loses golf match by a single shot

Trigg County lost to Livingston Central in a quad golf match Tuesday by a single stroke.  Livingston Central shot a 173, while Trigg had a 174 at Boots Randolph Golf Course.  Crittenden County had a 185, and Caldwell County a 192.

Josh Lowe and Derek Rogers each had a 6-over 42.  Cole Garnder added a 43, while Nick Choate had a 47 and Shaun Sizemore a 49.

In the girls' match, Karli Bush had a 53, including a chip-in birdie.  Sierra Bush shot a 59, and Madison Cheney had a 61.

Trigg County will host Lyon County, Caldwell County, and UHA in a quad match tomorrow at Boots Randolph Golf Course.

Trigg County opened their season Aug. 5 with a dual match loss to Calloway County at the Murray Oaks Country Club.  Calloway had a 168 compared to Trigg's 181.

Josh Lowe led Trigg County with a 42, followed by Nick Choate (43), Derek Rogers (47), Cole Gardner (49), and Shaun Sizemore and Caleb Bush with a 50.

Thomas-Bridges golf scramble attracts 17 teams

The team of Dennis Eggers, Rip Kirby, Barry Littlejohn, and Bill Hatler won the Thomas-Bridges golf scramble Friday with a score of 14-under, which included seven birdies on the back nine and an eagle of the par-5, 518-yard tenth hole at Boots Randolph Golf Course.  68 golfers turned out to help raise money for the TBA scholarship program.

Nick Choate finishes fourth at Jr. Golf Tourney

Nick Choate of Cadiz finished fourth at the Pepsi Junior Golf Tournament of Champions Thursday at the Canewood Golf Club in Georgetown.

Choate shot a first round 34 in the 11 and 12-year-old division, and followed it with a 41 on Thursday to finish seven shots behind Zach Smith of Mount Sterling.

Choate is tied for 14th in the Pepsi standings for his division despite playing a limited schedule.

Trigg County High School golf schedule

It's hard to believe that the fall high school sports season begins next week, but that's the case as golf matches get underway in the area.

For Trigg County, they have 13 matches scheduled for the 2008 season, which is seven under the scheduling limit of the 20 maximum matches allowed by the KHSAA.

Trigg County will play at Calloway County next Tuesday, Aug. 5 at the Oaks Country Club.  Their first home match will be Aug. 14 with Lyon County, Caldwell County, and University Heights at Boots Randolph Golf Course.

Four of Trigg's 13 matches will be at home -- all at Boots.

Emma Talley tied for 7th at the U.S. Girls Junior Amateur

Emma Talley of Princeton is tied for seventh place heading into today's match play round of the 60th U.S. Girls Junior Amateur Tournament in Hartford, Connecticut.

Talley shot a 1-under 70 in the first round thanks the three birdies and two bogeys.

In the second round, Talley had two bogeys and a birdie for a 1-over 72.

Lisa McCloskey of Montgomery, Texas shot an 8-under 63 to lead after two rounds with a score of 8-under.

The first and second rounds of match play continue today in Hartford.

The third round and quarterfinal round will be Thursday.

The semifinals will be Friday and the 36-hole match championship will be Saturday.

Scott's Golf Travels: Princeton Golf and Country Club

This is the first of what I hope are several reports on how area golf courses are playing this summer.

My first stop is the Princeton Golf and Country Club, located on Highway 293.

I was the guest of Princeton Times-Leader sports editor Todd Griffin, a member of the club.  I've only played on the course one other time back in 1986.

The 18-hole course lists at 5,990 yards from the white tees.  It plays at 4,837 yards from the ladies.

I've always thought the layout of the PGCC in some ways mirrored Boots Randolph Golf Course at Lake Barkley.  Both courses start with a par-4 hole that slightly winds left at the end.  Both courses feature a long par-5 on #2.  At Princeton, the green is protected by a man-made pond.  When I played here in 1986, they were rebuilding this pond as part of a radical reconstruction of some holes.

Hole #3 is the toughest hole on the course by handicap and features one of the more interesting gadgets you'll find on a golf course.  Because of the ridge in the middle of the fairway, there is a tall periscope a short distance from the tee box that allows you to see over ridge and into the fairway to see if the group in front of you is in the way.  If they are in the middle of the fairway, they won't have to worry about my tee shot hitting them.

The course plays 37 out and 35 in.  There are five par-3 holes on the course.  None of them are what you would call impossible but they are cleverly protected by greens and streams which make them key to shooting a low round.  I had three bogeys and two double-bogeys.  You can guess how my round went.

All in all, the course was in pretty good shape.  A little rough in some spots, but the greens played nice.  I was able to read the breaks, and the greens played them.  My trouble was guessing speed.

The course was either built in 1923 or 1931.  I have found web sites that say both.  The country club was finished in 1931.  It's one of the older golf courses in the area, and as a result, has begun to show it's age.  The PGCC has seen an increase in membership recently which has spurred some upgrades for the golf course.

There were new benches and nice stone markers recently installed on the course which are part of some initial improvements to the course.

All in all, it was an enjoyable round of golf despite the final score that appeared on my scorecard.  I look forward to playing the course again after the upgrades are finished.

Trigg County Diamond Club to host golf scramble Sunday

The Trigg County Diamond Club will host a four-person golf scramble Sunday at Boots Randolph Golf Course to benefit the Wildcat baseball team.

The cost is $25 per person and does not include greens fees or the cart.

The deadline to enter is Thursday.
