Local football players selected for Western Kentucky/Southern Illinois football game

Several local football players have been selected to play for the Western Kentucky All-Stars in their annual game with Southern Illinois.

Players named to the team include:

Receiver David Wease and defensive lineman John McGee from Trigg County;

Offensive lineman Koty Hix, defensive lineman Drayton Simmons, and defensive back Khalil Maynard from Fort Campbell;

Quarterback Ryan Knight, running back Kory Mosley, receiver Jeff Alexander, and defensive back Juan Jones from Christian County;

Defensive back Robert Bell, defensive lineman Travis Cunningham, and receiver Garrett Fann from Hopkinsville; and Receiver Tez Sivills, and defensive lineman Cole Webster from Caldwell County.

The game is scheduled to be played Friday, June 14 at 7pm at Johnson City High School in Illinois.

Ryan McCloud, David Wease to be preferred walk-ons at Murray State

Trigg County football teammates David Wease and Ryan McCloud will continue their playing career at Murray State University as preferred walk-ons.

Both players said they looked at other programs that offered some type of scholarship opportunities but preferred to walk on at Murray State.

McCloud, an All-WKC center, said he expected to contend for attention at center during the preseason workouts.  He strengthened his game last summer by attending several high profile camps.

Wease, who played kicker, punter, and tight end, said he expects to try out for punting duties for the Racers and could see some time at receiver.  Wease caught a team-high 32 passes for 512 yards and six touchdowns.  He also averaged 32 yards a punt.

Shawn Berner resigns as Fort Campbell football coach

Fort Campbell football coach Shawn Berner has resigned, according to a source at the school.

Berner coached at Fort Campbell for 11 seasons, compiling a 112-31 record (.783 winning percentage).  the 112 wins is second at the school to Marshall Patterson, who won 227 games from 1962-93.  However, Berner's postseason record was 25-8. 

Berner led the Falcons to three consecutive Class 2A state titles from 2007-09. He also coached two Kentucky Mr. Footballs at Fort Campbell -- Micah Johnson and Antonio Andrews.

The Falcons were 9-3 in 2012, losing to South Warren in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs.

The new Fort Campbell coach will be only the fifth head coach in the 51-year history of the Falcon football program.

 

Former Lynch High School football coach Ed Miracle has died

Ed Miracle, who coached Lynch High School to four state titles between 1959-68, died this week in Richmond.  He was 83.

Miracle led the Golden Bulldogs to eight Class 1A state championship appearances.  His teams were 4-4, winning state titles in 1959, 1960, 1963, and 1968.

Lynch's last state title appearance was in 1971 when Trigg County rallied in the second half to win 30-23 and claim the first of the school's consecutive state title.

Lynch won 10 region titles in 13 seasons and won their final region title in 1974.

 

Caldwell County to play for state football title today

Caldwell County plays for the Class 2A state football title today when they face Newport Central Catholic at 11am at L.T. Smith/Houchens Stadium in Bowling Green.

The Tigers are looking for the school's third state football championship and first since 1998 when they beat a heavily-favored Danville team.

Newport Central Catholic last won a state title in 2010 when they knocked off Owensboro Catholic, who runs the similar Tony Franklin-style offense that Caldwell County runs.

Owensboro has 17 points (Lafayette 7, Calloway County 4, Daviess County 4, and Apollo 2).  They could have as many as 20 points after next week.

Lone Oak has 15 points (Marshall County 5, Calloway County 4, Reidland 3, and Hopkinsville 3).  Lone Oak will likely have 18 points.

Madisonville has 14 points (Union County 4, Calloway County 4, and Hopkinsville 3).  If they beat Crittenden County next week, they will have 14 points and will likely finish with 16.

Fort Campbell football featured on Sports Illustrated web site's Underdog series

Fort Campbell football is once again in the national spotlight, this time featured on Sports Illustrated web site's Underdog series about high school football programs that have to overcome odds on and off the field.

SI followed the Falcons last week, featuring several players and including video of Fort Campbell's win at Webster County.

 

Trigg County will know football playoff opponent Friday

Trigg County will know who their first round opponent will be in the first round of the football playoffs after Friday night.

The Wildcats (5-3, 2-2) are the #3 seed in Class 3A, District One.  That means a first round road trip to either South Warren (5-3, 2-1) or Adair County (6-2, 2-1).  Those teams meet Friday night in Columbia.  The winner will be the #2 seed in the district and host Trigg County in three weeks.  The loser will be the #3 seed and travel to Paducah Tilghman in the first round.

District One top seed Fort Campbell (6-2, 3-1) will host Hart County (3-5, 1-3), who won a head-to-head tie-breaker with Edmonson County for the #4 seed in District Two.

Heath will travel to Monroe County in the other 1/4 seed first round game.

For those wondering, it's 79 miles from Cadiz to South Warren High School in Bowling Green.  It's 158 miles to Adair County High School in Columbia or about 2 1/2 hours one way on the new 65 mph U.S. 68.

Trigg County has never played Adair County or South Warren in football.

Records fell in Trigg County's loss to Fort Campbell

Revisions to the record book are still ongoing in the wake of Trigg County's 56-40 loss to Fort Campbell last Friday at Perdue Field.

Wildcat quarterback Luke McKenzie set a school record with 22 completions in the contest.  Four other quarterbacks -- Ian Stites, Dan Moser (twice), Steven Tyler, and Jimmy Mathis all had 19 complete passes in a game.

The junior quarterback completed the 22 passes in 37 attempts, which was fourth most in TCHS history.  His 388 yards was the second-highest total in Wildcat history and the most since Dan Moser threw for 461 yards against Caldwell County in 2000.  McKenzie completed passes to seven different receivers, with six catching three or more passes.

For the season, Mckenzie has completed 66-of-123 passes for 886 yards and 10 touchdowns and is on pace to become the first Wildcat quarterback since Donald Bush in 2008 to have back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons.

Senior Kyle Rivera caught four passes for a career-high 120 yards for the Wildcats.

Meanwhile, Fort Campbell sophomore Tristan Luke ran for 316 yards on 32 carries and scored six touchdowns.  It was the most yards by a Wildcat opponent since Union City's Keylon Hyde rushed for 298 yards in the 2010 season opener.  The school record against Trigg County is thought to be 336 yards by Muhlenberg North's Jon Frazier in 1998.

Jayven Jones ran for 117 yards against Fort Campbell and became the first Wildcat since Dilion Cionko in 2009 to have consecutive 100-yard rushing games.

The 96 points combined was the most in a Trigg County football game since Monroe County beat the Wildcats 75-35 in the first round of the 2002 playoffs.

Trigg County hammers Todd County Central 48-14

Trigg County roared out of the gate with 28 first quarter points and cruised to a 48-14 win over Todd County Central in the 2012 home opener at Perdue Field.  The win evens the Wildcats' record at 1-1.

Trigg County outgained the Rebels 227-12 in yards in the first quarter and had 445 total yards for the game.

Jayven Jones (94 yards on 10 carries) and Chris Acree (93 yards on eight carries) led the ground game, anchored by the offensive line of Jacob Mason, Graham Lawrence, Nick Allen, Ryan McCloud, and Mason Hyde who were the WKDZ Players of the Game.

Luke McKenzie was 12-of-13 passing for 129 yards and three touchdowns -- two of those to David Wease totaling 50 yards.

Three stats that jump off the stat sheet -- Trigg had 26 first downs; their average starting position was the Todd County 48; and the Wildcats converted 6-of-7 on third down.

Todd County (0-2) got 76 rushing yards and 90 passing yards from quarterback Bryce Shanklin.  Brett Bostic added a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown that tied for the fourth-longest ever against the Wildcats.  It also marked the second straight week the Wildcats have allowed a kickoff return for a touchdown.

Trigg County now leads the all-time series with Todd County 18-14 and have won five in a row against them for the first time since 1978-82.  Trigg is 12-4 vs. Todd in games played in Cadiz.

Trigg County returns to action Friday against Crittenden County in the Kentucky Machine/David Sadler Bowl at Perdue Field.  Hopkinsville and Greenwood play in the 5:30pm opener followed by the Wildcats and Rockets around 8pm.

 

 

Trigg County looks good in final preseason tuneup

Trigg County looked good in their final tuneup before the season starts next week.  The Wildcats tied Murray at one touchdown apiece and beat Union County two TDs to one.  Each scrimmage lasted about a half.

Against Murray, Trigg County's score came on a 2-yard run by quarterback Luke McKenzie.  Murray scored when their running back fumbled at the Trigg 10-yard line and a Tiger receiver scooped and scored to even the game.  Murray had one other score called back due to a penalty.

McKenzie was 6-of-12 passing for 99 yards. He also added 18 yards rushing.  David Wease had four catches for 56 yards.  Jayven Jones (right) had 24 yards rushing on three carries.

For the game, Murray had 133 rushing yards on 18 carries and just five passing yards.  Trigg County had 46 yards rushing on 13 carries and finished with 145 total yards on 25 plays.

Murray is coming off a 12-2 season and considered by many to be a preseason Top 10 team in Class 2A.

In the second part of the scrimmage, Trigg County put the clamps on Union County's run game and beat the Braves two scores to one.

Quentin Bird caught an 11-yard pass from McKenzie for the first score, and Chris Acree added a 2-yard scoring run later in the half.  Union County's score came on a 49-yard touchdown pass.

In the nightcap, McKenzie completed 7-of-13 passes for 70 yards.  Bird had two catches for 21 yards and newcomer Dee Murphy had two catches for 30 yards.

For the groundgainers, Acree had 31 yards on four carries, and Skylar Pool added 12 yards on three carries.

Trigg County's defense held Union County to - 2 yards rushing on 11 carries.  The Braves were 7-of-15 passing for 116 yards.  The Wildcats had 14 carries for 66 yards and 70 yards passing.

For the night, the Wildcat offense had 27 carries for 112 yards.  McKenzie was 13-of-25 passing for 169 yards.

Trigg's defense gave up 131 rushing yards on 29 carries and 121 passing yards on 8-of-18 passes.

Football scrimmages set for tonight

With the start of the high school football season underway, many schools will be playing their only preseason scrimmage tonight.

Trigg County will play in Murray as part of a three-team scrimmage at Ty Holland Stadium.  The Wildcats will scrimmage Murray at 7pm and Union County at 8pm.  Trigg County is coming off a 7-4 season and will open the 2012 campaign next Friday night at Russellville.

Hopkinsville, coming off their first winless season in nearly a century, will scrimmage Owensboro tonight at 7pm at the high school.

Fort Campbell is hosting their annual border wars scrimmage tonight on post.  The Falcons, who were 9-5 last year, will play West Creek, Tenn. at 7pm.  Marshall County will scrimmage Clarksville Northwest at 7:45pm, and Fort Campbell will play Marshall County at 8:30.

Fort Campbell opens their 2012 season for real next Friday at Clarksville.

Tomorrow, Christian County will get a chance to see one of their district mates at Austin Peay's Governor Stadium.  Graves County will play Clarksville High at 5:45pm and then play Rossview at 6:30.  Christian County will play Ravenwood at 7:15 and then play Clarksville Northeast at 8pm.  Northeast features quarterback Jalen Reeves-Maybin, who committed to Tennessee earlier today.

Christian County hosts Madisonville to open their 2012 season next week.

Craig Clayton fired as Franklin HS football coach

At most places, a 65-22 record in football would be more than enough to keep your job.  That's not the case at Franklin High School in Tennessee.  Coach Craig Clayton has been fired as football coach, according to the Tennessean newspaper.

Some interesting quotes in the story involve the alleged undermining of one of Clayton's assistant coaches three years ago, and the Franklin principal's non-committal regarding the firing.

In fact, Clayton told The Examiner.com that when the school this year rehired the assistant coach he fired three years ago, he saw the writing on the wall.

Before coaching at Franklin, Clayton was 149-84 in 19 seasons as Hopkinsville head coach, which included two trips to the state finals.

Jeffery Adams to give indoor football a try

Former Trigg County Wildcat and Louisville Cardinal Jeffery Adams will continue his football playing career in a few months with the Reading Express of the Indoor Football League.

Adams discussed his new opportunity on the Saturday Morning Sports Report and feels like the Cardinal football program is heading in the right direction under head coach Charlie Strong.

• Take US 68 east to Bowling Green
• Get on the Natcher Parkway east
• Take I-65 north toward Louisville
• Take the Cumberland Parkway toward Glasgow
• Get off Exit 14 (Hwy 90).  Turn right towards Burkesville.  You will drive through Eighty-Eight and Summer Shade.  Just past Summer Shade, turn right on KY 163.
• Take KY 163 into Tompkinsville.  Turn right on West Fourth Street (KY 63).  Go three blocks and turn left onto Emberton Street, just past the baseball field.

Paducah Tilghman hammers Trigg County 57-7

Paducah Tilghman held Trigg County to 25 rushing yards and hammered the Wildcats 57-7 Friday night in Paducah. 

The Blue Tornado wrapped up the regular season district title, while Trigg County can do no better than a three seed in the playoffs after falling to 5-2 overall and 1-2 in the district.Here is a recap of the game and comments from head coach Coby Lewis from the Saturday Morning Sports Report.

Trigg County scored 28 points in the fourth quarter to beat Webster County 47-24 at Perdue Field Sept. 30.

Coby Lewis named new Trigg County football coach

Trigg County has promoted assistant coach Coby Lewis to the top spot in its football program with the start of the 2011 season two weeks away.

Lewis was introduced as the new football coach this morning at the school.  He takes over for Shannon Burcham who took the principal's job last month.

Lewis is a Trigg County graduate who has served as an assistant coach in the program for several years.  He was Burcham's offensive coordinator when the two were at Madisonville in 2006 and has been the Wildcat OC the past four seasons.

He said he has been planning and running the practices since Burcham stepped down two weeks ago, and expects the transition to be a smooth one.

Lewis' first official practice as head coach will be tonight as part of the annual Black/White game at Perdue Field at 7pm.

Trigg County Black/White Game to be Friday

Trigg County will hold their annual Black/White football game Friday night at 7pm at Perdue Field.

The Wildcats will scrimmage at Marshall County Aug. 12 and open their 2011 season Aug. 19 against Russellville at Perdue Field.

In addition, the Trigg County Grid Iron Club has begun a program known as Locker Room Legends. 

The program is designed to allow past players, coaches, and support staff the opportunity to give back to the program while being recognized for their accomplishments. By becoming a member of the Locker Room Legends, your name, number, and years played will be posted on an individual plaque in the Wildcat meeting room.  This is the place the athletes meet before going to practice each day, and where they meet before each game on Friday night. 

A two-year membership costs $20; a five-year membership costs $40; and a lifetime membership costs $100.

Bluegrasspreps.com has released their 2011 Kentucky High School Football Rankings.  Four defending state champions -- Newport Central Catholic (2A), Central (3A), Highlands, and Trinity (6A) -- are ranked number one in their respective classes. 

 

Highlands, last year's Class 5A state champ, moves to Class 4A this year and is the preseason number one.  Beechwood (1A) and Bowling Green (5A) are also ranked atop their class by Bluegrasspreps.com.

Trigg County expected to name a new football coach this week

Trigg County High School Principal Shannon Burcham says a new football coach could be in place by the end of this week.

Burcham said on the Saturday Morning Sports Report on WKDZ that around 20 people have applied for the job, although none are current high school head coaches.

Burcham coached the Wildcats to a 26-22 record in four seasons before taking the principal's job at the high school earlier this month.  The current staff has been running the team during practice until a new head coach is named.

He also said when the new coach is named, it will be for the long haul and not just for a one year deal.

Burcham also talked about the search for a new assistant athletic director, which should be named this week, and a new athletic director to replace Jim Perrin.

Trigg County Little League Football signups begin Aug. 8

Signups for Trigg County Little League Football will begin Monday, August 8 as part of the school's open house.

TCLLF Director Andy Allen says signups will continue on Saturday, Aug. 13 with the draft to also be held that day.

Football is for kids who will be in kindergarten through sixth grade.  K-2 will be flag football, and grades 3-6 will be tackle football.

Cost to play is $20.

Trigg County searching for new football coach; Burcham named principal

With the start of the 2011 football season exactly a month away, Trigg County will be searching for a new football coach to replace Shannon Burcham, who was named the new high school principal Monday.

Burcham beat out three other candidates for the position of TCHS principal, replacing Neal Cummins who resigned earlier this spring.

Burcham was 26-22 in four seasons as head coach at Trigg County following one season as head coach at Madisonville.  He served as a longtime assistant coach at Trigg before taking the Madisonville job in 2006.

Burcham taught math in the high school and served as assistant athletic director.  He will have a hand in naming his successor, with current assistant coach Coby Lewis the likely frontrunner.

Trigg County Youth Football Camp to start Monday

The Trigg County High School football team will be having their annual youth instructional camp Monday through Thursday from 8-10am each day.

The cost is $30 per camper and is open to students entering the first through sixth grades this year.  Each camper will get a football, a T-shirt, and instruction from TCHS players and coaches.

Participants should be at the football field house Monday at 8am to register.  You can pre-register by contacting coach Shannon Burcham at 522-0107.

 

Trigg duo signs with Kentucky Christian University

 
Trigg County football players Andrew Stewart and Nick Watkins have signed to continue their football careers at Kentucky Christian University.  The duo made the announcement official at a signing ceremony Wednesday at the high school.

Stewart, a two-year starter at quarterback, threw for 1,326 yards and 13 touchdowns as a senior. The yardage total was 10th most in a season in TCHS history.  He was also the team's leading rusher with 616 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2010.

For his career, Stewart threw for 2,162 yards and 13 touchdowns.

In addition, Stewart was Trigg County's leading tackler the past two seasons and earned All Western Kentucky Conference honors as a junior and senior.

Nick Watkins led Trigg County with 19 catches for 368 yards and four touchdowns for the Wildcats in 2010.  For his career, Watkins caught 35 passes for 567 yards and five touchdowns.

He was also among the team leaders in takeaways on defense each of the last two years and was an All-WKC selection in 2010.

Not only are Watkins and Stewart teammates, but they are also cousins, having played together since an early age.

Kentucky Christian University is an NAIA school located in Grayson, Kentucky.  They are a member of the Mid-South Conference.

Former Washington Redskins and Detroit Lions receiver Mike Furrey was named the head coach of the fourth-year program in December.  The Knights were 0-11 last year.

 

Marc Adam Clark named Hopkinsville football coach

Marc Adam Clark was named the new football coach of Hopkinsville High School today at a news conference at the school.

Clark, 26, served as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator at Male High School in Louisville last year.  He is a 2003 graduate of Bowling Green High School and a Western Kentucky University graduate.

Clark previously served as an assistant coach at Logan County and was a quality control assistant coach at Western Kentucky University. 

He takes over for Dixie Jones, who resigned in November.  Hopkinsville High had offered the job to at least two other candidates before interviewing Clark.  However, Clark has some ties to Christian County.  His wife Mariah Hammonds Clark grew up in Hopkinsville at a young age before moving away, and the new coach has had family that have lived in the Pembroke area.

Hopkinsville could name a new football coach this week

Hopkinsville could name a new football coach this week, and a source has told me that former Owensboro Catholic and Marshall County head coach Mike Lawson will be offered the job.

Lawson coached three years at Owensboro Catholic, compiling a 31-8 record from 2001-04 which included a trip to the Class 2A state semifinals in 2003.

His next stop was Marshall County from 2004-06, where he had an 18-14 record but never won a playoff game.

Lawson left for Central Hardin following the 2006 season and has compiled a 24-19 record in four seasons there.  The Bruins were 9-3 in 2010 which included a first-round win in the Class 6A playoffs.

In 10 seasons as a head coach, Lawson's record is 73-41.  The Meade County graduate also coached the offensive line at North Hardin High School.

Lawson's teams utilize a wide-open spread offense that features a balanced backfield.  He had four different backs rush for over 450 yards last year and a quarterback that threw for over 1,100 yards.

If Lawson is named the head coach as expected, he will take over a Hopkinsville program that finished 3-7 last year and missed the postseason for the first time in 20 years.

 

Macoreyon Tandy to make college choice Wednesday

Christian County receiver Marcoreyon Tandy is expected to annouce his college decision Wednesday on National Signing Day, according to Rivals.com.

Tandy made a scheduled visit to Kentucky over the weekend and has been offered by UK, Marshall, and Western Kentucky.

Tandy told catspause.com that the UK coaches see him playing a similar role to Randall Cobb as a receiver and returner.  The Lexington Herald-Leader says Tandy still needs to qualify academically and is a potential grayshirt candidate.

The Christian County Colonel had over 1,200 yards rushing and receiving and scored 20 touchdowns in helping lead Christian County to the Class 5A state title game.

 

Trigg County finalizes 2011 football schedule

Trigg County has finalized their 2011 football schedule with a couple of old rivals and one first-time opponent on the slate.

For the first time in school history, Trigg County makes the jump to Class 3A where they will be in District One with Fort Campbell, Webster County, Heath, and Paducah Tilghman.

Trigg County will open the season Friday, August 19 at Perdue Field against Russellville.  The Panthers move back to Class 1A after four years in Class 3A.  Trigg County and Russellville met every year from 1953-2002 but haven't played since.  Russellville leads the all-time series 36-19-1.

The Wildcats will play at Todd County Central in Elkton August 26.  The Wildcats and Rebels played every year from 1970 to 2002 with the exception of a three-year stretch from 1984-86.  Trigg beat Todd 45-14 in the 2008 playoffs but haven't played them in the regular season since 2002.  Trigg leads the all-time series 17-14.

The third week of the season brings the Wildcat Chevrolet Bowl and a new opponent.  Trigg County will play Crittenden County in the second game.  The Rockets move up to Class 2A this year after a successful run in Class 1A.  Trigg and Crittenden were annual opponents from 1957 to 1982, with the series ending at the dawn of the Al Baker era at TCHS.  The series resumed in 1991 and continued until 2000 when Trigg County again showed they were ready to move to the next level.  The last game between the schools was a 63-21 Trigg win in 2000.  Trigg leads the all-time series 26-9-1.

Despite moving out of Class 2A, Trigg County was able to keep long-time border rival Caldwell County on the schedule.  The schools will meet Sept. 9 at Perdue Field.  Trigg and Caldwell have met every year since 1954, making it one of western Kentucky's longest continuous series.  Caldwell leads the series 37-20-1.

Trigg County will be off September 16 in advance of their district schedule.  A game here with Reidland fell through after the McCracken County teams restructured their schedules to play each other.

Trigg County's first district game will be September 23 at Fort Campbell, which is where their 2010 season ended in the first round of the playoffs.  Fort Campbell leads the series with Trigg 24-12.

On September 30, Trigg County will host Webster County in their second district game.  Webster and Trigg were district mates in the past decade, with Trigg leading the all-time series 15-4.  They last played in 2006.

The Wildcats play their third district game October 7 at Paducah Tilghman, the 2009 Class 3A state champion.  The only time these teams have played was a 31-9 Tilghman win in the 1985 season opener.

Ham Festival weekend, Trigg County will wrap up their district schedule by hosting Heath at Perdue Field.  Like Trigg and Fort Campbell, Heath makes the jump to Class 3A.  However, once they consolidate with Reidland and Lone Oak to form the new McCracken County High School, the Pirates will drop from the schedule and make it a four team district.  Trigg has won 13 straight games against Heath and lead the all-time series 17-9.

The newcomer to the Wildcat schedule is North Bullitt on Saturday, October 22.  Trigg will host  the Class 4A Eagles in 2011 and make the return trip to Shepherdsville on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012.  North Bullitt was 8-4 last year after a 2-9 campaign in 2009.  In 2007, North Bullitt lost in the region finals to Lone Oak.

Trigg County will close out their regular season October 28 at another Class 4A school, Calloway County.  It will mark Trigg's first game at Jack Rose Stadium since 1995.  The Lakers have been a regular participant in Trigg County's bowl game in recent years with the last game against Trigg in 2008.  In the all-time series, Trigg holds a slim 6-5 advantage against the Lakers.

Dixie Jones resigns as Hopkinsville football coach

Hopkinsville High School is looking for a new head football coach following the resignation of Dixie Jones.

The announcement was made official this morning in a short three sentence press release from the Christian County School Board. It said Jones had resigned as head football coach, that he had been the head coach at Hopkinsville for the past six seasons, and that Hopkinsville High principal Demetria Choice will post the coaching job and will form a search committee to hire a new coach.

Jones was 33-37 in six years as head coach. His first two teams at Hoptown in 2005 and 2006 both reached the region finals. His postseason record at Hopkinsville was 5-5. However, the Tigers were just 3-7 this year and missed the playoffs for the first time since 1990.

Jones was 10-3 in one season at Madisonville in 2004 before taking the Hoptown job. He coached at Trigg County for 20 years, winning 97 and losing 121. His overall coaching record is 140-161 in 27 years as a head coach.

With the resignation by Jones, Hopkinsville has now had coaching turnover in their football, baseball, and basketball programs in the past year.

Curtis Higgins resigns as Fern Creek football coach

Former Trigg County coach Curtis Higgins has resigned as football coach at Fern Creek High School in Louisville.

Higgins coached the Tigers for four seasons, going 28-20.  He was 69-26 in eight seasons as Trigg County coach from 1999-2006.  His overall record, which also includes a stop at Oldham County, is 114-70.

Higgins told me via a text message Monday night he plans to seek an administration level job in the Louisville area.

"I'll be certified completely by the end of the spring, and I'll be looking for a job as an assistant principal or maybe as an athletic director," Higgins told Jason Frakes of the Louisville Courier-Journal. "This is something I knew was a possibility. I just didn't know when I was going to make the move."

Higgins brought an exciting offensive style to Trigg County when he arrived from Louisville in 1999, and several of his teams and players still sit atop the TCHS football record book.  Higgins also served as softball coach and assistant athletic director at Trigg before leaving for Fern Creek after the 2007 school year.

 

SI writer nominates Shawn Berner for Sportsman of the Year

Sports Illustrated is set to name their Sportsman of the Year later this month.  The award has been chosen every year since the magazone began in 1954.

SI college writer Andy Staples was on post back in August to write a story about Fort Campbell football and the job head coach Shawn Berner has done in coaching and teaching his students and players.

Staples' visit to Fort Campbell must have left a lasting impression because he has nominated Berner for the prestigious SI Sportsman of the Year Award.  Other nominations by SI writers include NHL star Sidney Crosby, Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter, the Butler Bulldogs, and PGA golfer Grahame McDowell.

Hopkinsville native Steve Pardue steps down as LaGrange football coach

Steve Pardue has resigned as football coach at LaGrange (Ga.) High School after 17 years and three state titles.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Pardue's resignation today in an online story.

Pardue was 161-46 in 17 seasons, but the Grangers finished 5-6 this year -- their first losing season in 11 seasons.

LaGrange has had quite the pipeline to the University of Kentucky, sending standouts Wesley Woodyard, Qua Huzzie, Quenton McCord, Braxton Kelley, and Demoreo Ford north to Lexington to play for the 'Cats.

Pardue is a Hopkinsville native, playing for Fred Clayton at Christian County High School.  He later lettered in football three seasons at Austin Peay State University.  His first head coaching job was at Crittenden County where the Rockets were 17-23 from 1987-90.  

Pardue is also the brother-in-law of former Caldwell County football coach Pat Gates.

Could Pardue be headed back north to pursue another coaching challenge?

“I’m at peace, and I’m excited about whatever’s next,” Pardue told the LaGrange Daily News.  “I know from a personal standpoint I’ve got to find something that’s real time-consuming.”

Kentucky Football Coaches Association district coach and players of the year

The Kentucky Football Coaches Association announced their district player and coach of the year for each of the six classes in the state.  Voting is completed by football coaches in each district.

Fort Campbell 29 Trigg County 15

Trigg County's football season came to an end with a 29-15 loss at Fort Campbell in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs.

Falcon quarterback Aaron Hills ran for three touchdowns and passed for a fourth as Fort Campbell won their 16th straight playoff game.  For the game, Hills ran 27 times for 153 yards.  He was 9-of-13 passing for 80 yards.  Tre Powell caught four passes for 28 yards.  He also had a 60-yard punt return for a touchdown called back on a bad blocking penalty.

For the game, Fort Campbell outgained Trigg 222-181.

Andrew Stewart led Trigg with 86 yards on 22 carries.  He scored both Trigg touchdowns.  Stewart was 4-of-19 passing for 40 yards.

Trigg trailed 9-7 at halftime and tied the game at 15 on a 3-yard run and conversion run by Stewart with 3:03 left in the third quarter. 

Fort Campbell answered on a 9-yard run by Hills with 1:36 left in the quarter to lead 22-15.

Trigg was driving, but Stewart was picked off at the 9-yard line with 5:44 left.  Hills answered with a 13-yard run five plays later that sealed the win.

Fort Campbell improved to 5-6 with the win and will play at Murray next week.

Trigg County's season ends with a record of 4-7.

NOTES FROM THE GAME:

• It was 41 degrees at kickoff.  It was 35 degrees when the game ended.
• It is Trigg County's first losing season since 1999 -- the longest stretch in school history without a losing record.
• It was Trigg's first opening round loss in the playoffs since a 75-35 loss to Monroe County in 2002.
• Fort Campbell has won eight of the last nine meetings with Trigg County and leads the all-time series 25-12, including a 15-5 record at Fryar Stadium.
• Tre Powell has four touchdown catches against Trigg County in the last two meetings.
• Powell's punt return for touchdown that was called back because of a penalty would have set a new state record for career punt returns for touchdowns.
• The 347 points allowed by Trigg County is the third most in program history behind the 1997 (394) and 1998 (515) teams.  The 31.5 points per game allowed is the fourth most in program history.
• Of the seven teams Trigg County lost to in 2010, five (Murray, Caldwell County, Ballard Memorial, Mayfield, and Fort Campbell) are still alive in the playoffs.  Hopkinsville missed the postseason, and Union City, Tennessee lost their opening round playoff game and finished with a 5-6 record.
• Trigg County finishes its 70th season of football with a career record of 340-375-15 (.467 win pct.).
• Andrew Stewart finished the season with 1,326 passing yards, good for 10th most in a season.  It is the 20th time in school history that a quarerback has topped 1,000 passing yards in a season.
• Ethan Sweno's seven field goals this year and eight for his career are both new school records.

 

 

Trigg County at Fort Campbell

The football playoffs begin tonight as Trigg County travels to Fort Campbell in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs.

Both teams enter the game with 4-6 records.

The Falcons have won 15 straight playoff games and three straight Class 2A state championships, but it was Trigg County that last beat them in the postseason, winning 28-15 at Fryar Stadium in 2006.

Fort Campbell leads the all-time series 24-12 and has won seven of the last eight meetings.

Fans going to Fort Campbell need to enter through Gate Three and have their proper vehicle information ready.

In other Class 2A games, Todd County travels to Murray; Caldwell County hosts Hancock County; and Reidland visits Owensboro Catholic.

In Class 1A, Mayfield hosts Caverna; Ballard Memorial travels to Kentucky Country Day; Fulton County heads to Louisville Holy Cross; and Crittenden County hosts Bethlehem.

In Class 3A, Butler County visits Paducah Tilghman; Webster County heads to Edmonson County; McLean County travels to Russellville; and Union County hosts Hart County.

In Class 4A, Warren East heads to Lone Oak; Calloway County visits Franklin-Simpson; and Hopkins County Central hosts Russell County.

In Class 5A, Christian County hosts Barren County in the first round for the second straight year.  The Colonels look to end a two-game losing streak tonight in the 7pm game at the Stadium of Champions.

Elsewhere, Madisonville visits Bowling Green; Warren Central hosts Ohio County; and Owensboro entertains Grayson County.

In Class 6A, Marshall County visits Louisville to play Fern Creek; Apollo also heads to Louisville.  They will play Male.  And Graves County will host Louisville Southern.

Butler/PRP game has Cal/Stanford finish

I've seen some crazy high school football plays, but this one from Louisville last Friday may take the cake.  It had a crazy finish full of laterals, a PA announcer declaring the game over in the middle of the play, both fields spilling onto the field too soon, and players hanging from the goal posts after the touchdown was scored.  One thing it didn't have?  Penalty flags.

The setup: Pleasure Ridge Park leads Butler 41-34 with just 1.8 seconds left and is kicking off to Butler.
