Christian County's Anthony Hickey named Mr. Basketball

 
One of the people pictured was named Mr. Basketball Tuesday, is an oustanding athlete and person, and will likely go on to a successful career after high school.  The other person is me.

 

Christian County guard Anthony Hickey was named Kentucky Mr. Basketball Tuesday, becoming the first Colonel boys player to win the honor.

Hickey will wear the No. 1 jersey for Kentucky this summer in their annual all-star series against Indiana. Games are set for June 10 at Bellarmine University and June 11 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Hickey averaged 18 points, 4.7 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 4 steals during his senior season.  He was named Sweet 16 MVP in helping lead Christian County to their first ever state basketball title.  Last week, he was named Associated Press Player of the Year.

Hickey is the third player from the Second Region to be named Mr. Basketball, joining Madisonville's Jon Hood in 2009 and Earlington's Harry Todd in 1958.

 

Trigg Arrowcats win two state titles

Trigg County's Arrowcats won two state titles Tuesday at the Kentucky Archery in Schools State Tournament in Louisville, while a third team finished second.

Both the elementary and middle school teams at Trigg finished in first place.  The high school team took second.  All three will advance to the national tournament in May.

Trigg County Intermediate bested Jackson County Middle School by 48 points to win the state title.  Anderson County finished in third place, and Henderson North Middle was sixth.

Clay Stevens was Trigg's top shooter in the Intermediate School division with a score of 279, good for 12th place.  Kimberlee Shelton finished in 13th place with a score of 278.  The top five boys scores were Stevens, Cody Wilson (275), Braydon Miller and Grayson Ford (272), and Jeffrey Ross (265).

The top five female scores were Shelton, Brookelyn Skinner (275), Lora Lee Heady (271), Kaylin Smith (269), and Rebecca Rutzler (259).

Akira Umar of Paris was the top female shooter (282), while Logan Webb of Payneville and Nick Casada of Somerset tied for the top male score at 288.

The state title is the fifth for the elementary school (2004, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2011).

Trigg duo signs with Kentucky Christian University

 
Trigg County football players Andrew Stewart and Nick Watkins have signed to continue their football careers at Kentucky Christian University.  The duo made the announcement official at a signing ceremony Wednesday at the high school.

Stewart, a two-year starter at quarterback, threw for 1,326 yards and 13 touchdowns as a senior. The yardage total was 10th most in a season in TCHS history.  He was also the team's leading rusher with 616 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2010.

For his career, Stewart threw for 2,162 yards and 13 touchdowns.

In addition, Stewart was Trigg County's leading tackler the past two seasons and earned All Western Kentucky Conference honors as a junior and senior.

Nick Watkins led Trigg County with 19 catches for 368 yards and four touchdowns for the Wildcats in 2010.  For his career, Watkins caught 35 passes for 567 yards and five touchdowns.

He was also among the team leaders in takeaways on defense each of the last two years and was an All-WKC selection in 2010.

Not only are Watkins and Stewart teammates, but they are also cousins, having played together since an early age.

Kentucky Christian University is an NAIA school located in Grayson, Kentucky.  They are a member of the Mid-South Conference.

Former Washington Redskins and Detroit Lions receiver Mike Furrey was named the head coach of the fourth-year program in December.  The Knights were 0-11 last year.

Christian County wins their first state basketball title

Christian County's Veontae Lewis hit a shot at the buzzer in the second overtime to lead Christian County to a 65-63 double-overtime win over Rowan County in the championship game of the Boys Sweet 16.

The state title is the first state title for Christian County in basketball.

The Colonels beat top-ranked Eastern 49-46 in the semifinals earlier Saturday.

Anthony Hickey was named the tournament MVP.

TCYAA Evaluation Day is Saturday

Player evaluation for the Trigg County Youth Athletic Association will be Saturday at the Complex.

Here is the schedule:

10am - Baseball players age 7-12

1pm - Baseball and softball players age 5-6

2pm - Softball players age 7-12

Players need to bring a bat, helmet, and glove.

Anyone who has not registered their child to play can do so up to 15 minutes before their evaluation time. 

Player attendance is not mandatory, but encouraged so the coaches can evaluate the players prior to the draft.

Trigg County sweeps Region I Archery Meet

Trigg County swept the Region I Archery Meet held Friday and Saturday at Trigg County High School, with all three schools qualifying for the state meet March 28-29 in Louisville.

Trigg's Sloane Patterson was the top shooter of the meet (male of female) with a score of 293 out of a possible 300.  Logan County's Logan Smotherman was the top male shooter with a score of 291.

Over 300 archers utilized the Matthew Genesis Bow and Easton 1820 Aluminum Arrows while shooting at Morrell Targets during the two-day competition.

Marc Adam Clark named Hopkinsville football coach

Marc Adam Clark was named the new football coach of Hopkinsville High School today at a news conference at the school.

Clark, 26, served as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator at Male High School in Louisville last year.  He is a 2003 graduate of Bowling Green High School and a Western Kentucky University graduate.

Clark previously served as an assistant coach at Logan County and was a quality control assistant coach at Western Kentucky University. 

He takes over for Dixie Jones, who resigned in November.  Hopkinsville High had offered the job to at least two other candidates before interviewing Clark.  However, Clark has some ties to Christian County.  His wife Mariah Hammonds Clark grew up in Hopkinsville at a young age before moving away, and the new coach has had family that have lived in the Pembroke area.

Fort Campbell basketball coach arrested on stalking charge

Fort Campbell boys' basketball coach John Cunningham was arrested Monday in Clarksville, Tennessee on a stalking charge stemming from an alleged incident involving a teacher at Fort Campbell High School.  

Cunningham, 36, of Cadiz, was charged with misdemeanor stalking following his arrest Monday by the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.  He was booked into the Montgomery County Jail on a $1,000 bond and released Tuesday, according to the department's web site.

According to a Clarksville Police Department report filed on Feb. 25, the female victim stated Cunningham was an ex-boyfriend and refused to stop coming to her Clarksville house in recent weeks.  The report also stated Cunningham continued to contact her at the high school where they both teach, despite being told by school staff to stop.

The victim told police she did not feel like the contact would stop and was in fear of her safety and the safety of her son.  The warrant for stalking was secured, according to the report, and Cunningham was arrested at 4:31 pm Monday.

According to Tennessee law, stalking is described as a willful course of conduct involving repeated or continuing harassment of another individual that would cause a reasonable person to feel terrorized, frightened, intimidated, threatened, harassed, or molested, and that actually causes the victim to feel terrorized, frightened, intimidated, threatened, harassed, or molested.

Cunningham's status as a teacher and coach at Fort Campbell was not known Tuesday afternoon.  No one answered the school phone after normal school hours.

Cunningham is in his first year at Fort Campbell, guiding both the boys' soccer team and boys' basketball team.  He was a former assistant basketball coach at Trigg County.
