Trigg County couldn't overcome a slow start and lost to Caverna 61-47 in the first round of the McLean County Lady Cougar After Christmas Tourmament Monday in Calhoun.
Trigg didn't score for the first 4:30 of the game and trailed 13-4 after one quarter and 31-15 at halftime. Caverna (3-5) built their lead to 47-22 after three quarters before Trigg outscored the Lady Colonels 25-14 in the fourth quarter.
Ashley Matlock led the Lady Wildcats with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Brooke Kearney hit four 3-pointers and finished with 12 points. Le'Onzerrae Grubbs added six points and seven rebounds.
Caverna was led by Reagon Kingery's 19 points, and Madison Faulkner added 13 points.
The game against Caverna was Trigg's second all time against the Fifth Region school. The only other meeting was a 71-53 Trigg loss in 2001.
The Lady Wildcats fall to 2-8 with the loss. Trigg will play Lone Oak in the consolation bracket at 2pm today. The Lady Wildcats lost to Lone Oak 63-51 last week in the KME Classic at Wildcat Gym.
Lone Oak was outscored 21-11 in the fourth quarter and lost to McLean County 59-50. In other first round games, Todd County Central beat Carlisle County 53-30 and Estill County beat Reidland 44-35.
