Trigg finishes 12th at Region I Golf Tournament

Trigg County finished 12th at the Region I Golf Tournament Tuesday at Drake Creek in Ledbetter.

Nick Choate led Trigg with a 77, followed by Cole Gardner's 82, and Ryan Russell's 91.  Derek Rogers added a 96, and Austin Apsley had a 101.

Murray senior Jordan Smith beat St. Mary sophomore Joey Mayo in a playoff to take region medalist honors.  Calloway County took first place as a team, and St. Mary was second.  Calloway is coached by former Trigg County coach Steve Smith.

Conner Gates of Hopkinsville qualified for the state tournament at the Region II Tournament held at Lakeshore County Club in Madisonville.

 

Unbeatens Trigg County and Hopkinsville to meet tonight

Trigg County and Hopkinsville, the last two unbeaten soccer teams in the region, meet tonight at the Complex as the teams try to send a region message to the other.

The Wildcats are 14-0-1, having tied the school record with 14 straight wins.  Hopkinsville is 12-0-5 after their Saturday win over Calloway County.

Trigg County has beaten Hopkinsville just once in 18 career meetings.  That came in the 2001 region tournament.  Hopkinsville has won five games since then with another ending in a tie.

Gametime at the Complex is 7:30pm.

In other soccer games tonight:

• Calloway County visits Christian County
• Dawson Springs entertains Butler County
• Madisonville is at Fort Campbell
• Lyon County is at Hopkins County Central

In girls soccer games tonight:

GIRLS SOCCER

University Heights Academy tied Owensboro Catholic 3-3 Monday in Hopkinsville.  The Lady Aces (8-7-2) jumped out to an early lead with two goals, but Sally Morse scored off of an assist from Eden Mack to close the margin just before halftime. In the second half, after another goal by the Lady Aces, Meg Thalmann used a header to put one in the net and Alyson Parker scored on a penalty kick to tie the score in the last two minutes of the game. UHA is now 10-2-1 on the season.

In the JV game, UHA beat the Lady Aces 5-2. Sally Morse scored four goals and Connor East scored one goal for the Lady Blazers (13-1).

In other games, Caldwell County shut out Paducah Tilghman 3-0.  Fort Campbell edged Todd County Central 2-1, Greenwood nipped Hopkinsville 1-0, ending the Lady Tigers' 12-game unbeaten streak.

VOLLEYBALL

Caldwell County beat Hopkins County Central 25-5, 25-13.  Caldwell County is now 25-2 and a perfect 4-0 in district play.

The Christian County Middle School Volleyball team finished it's season last night with both 8th & 7th grade teams losing to Hopkinsville Middle School.

The 8th grade team lost to Hoptown 21-11, 19-21, 13-15. They finished the season with a record of 6-4.

The 7th grade team lost to Hoptown 21-15, 9-21, 13-15. They finished the season with a record of 1-8.

 

JV FOOTBALL

Trigg County beat Hopkins County Central 52-26.  Luke McKenzie threw four touchdowns -- two to Quinton Bird.  One of the TDs covered 89 yards.   McKenzie had over 300 yards passing and 150 more rushing, according to TCHS assistant coach Coby Lewis.  Devonte Nance had two touchdowns receiving and picked off two passes.

The history of Caldwell County football has been archived and made into a book that is on sale through the Princeton Times-Leader.

100 Years of Caldwell County Football traces the history of the sport from three different high schools -- Princeton High, Butler High, and Caldwell County High.

The book was written by Times-Leader sports editor Todd Griffin, who talked about the book on the Saturday Morning Sports Report.

Trigg County takes 10th at Girls Region Golf Tournament

Trigg County's girls finished 10th at the Region I Golf Tournament Monday at Paxton Park Golf Course in Paducah.

Karli Bush had the low score for Trigg County with a 92, followed by Sierra Bush (105), Madison Chaney (110), and Lyndsey Choate (135).

Paducah Tilghman senior April Butler beat Lone Oak eighth grader Anna Hack on the first playoff hole to take medalist honors.  Both shot a 73 for 18 holes.

However, Lone Oak took the team title by three shots over Tilghman.

Allison Clayton shot a 96 for Lyon County, and Aubrey Riggs had a 99.

Meanwhile, Anna Moore of University Heights Academy missed qualifying for the state tournament by three shots after shooting a 90 at the Region II Golf Tournament at Ben Hawes State Park in Owensboro.

The Boys Region I Golf Tournament gets underway today at Drake Creek Golf Course in Ledbetter.  The Boys Region II Golf Tournament will be hosted by Lakeshore Country Club in Madisonville.

 

Emma Talley helps U.S. to huge first day at U.S. Junior Ryder Cup

Caldwell County golfer Emma Talley was part of two winning pairs as the U.S. Junior Ryder Cup team jumped out to a 9-3 lead over the European counterparts Monday at Gleneagles Resort in Perthshire, Scotland. 

The U.S. won five of the six foursomes matches Monday morning, then extended their advantage by dropping only two mixed fourball matches in the afternoon. The event concludes today with 12 singles matches.

Talley and U.S. teammate Cassy Isagawa won three straight holes late to top Kelly Tidy and Amy Boulden 3-and-2.

In the afternoon, Talley teamed with fellow Kentuckian Justin Thomas of St. Xavier to win a fourball match 4-and-3.

Both Thomas and Talley were granted an exemption from this week's high school region tournaments by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association and will be eligible for next week's state tournament.

Caldwell County's Ford Branch featured on ESPN's Outside the Lines

Caldwell County's Ford Branch Jr. was featured on a segment of ESPN's Outside the Lines dealing with aspiring college basketball officials.

Branch has called high school basketball games in the Second Region the past few years as well as games in the state tournament.  He also officiated 15 Ohio Valley Conference games last year.

Caldwell County downs Trigg County in volleyball action

Caldwell County won their 14th straight game Tuesday with a 25-8, 25-7 win over Trigg County in Princeton.

Caldwell improves to 17-1 overall and 3-0 in district play, securing the top seed in the district tournament.

Trigg County falls to 4-9 with their fifth straight loss.  The Lady Wildcats return to action Thursday at Crittenden County.

In other volleyball action Tuesday:

•  Christian County (17-6) beat Logan County (18-3) 25-23, 19-25, 25-21.
   
  "I'm very proud of how the girls played tonight.  They played as a team and continually picked each other up when the plays were not going our way.  They never gave up on each other!  We did a wonderful job at the net blocking and altering Logan's hits.  We also served as well as we have all year.  We attacked a lot tonight.  That was due to how well we passed.  Great passing makes us successful and tonight we were successful," CCHS coach Rick Erickson said.
   
  "Logan County is a great team.  This was a big win for us."
   
  Christian County trailed 8-15 in the first set before coming back to tie it at 15-15.  They then trailed 19-22 before tying the score at 22-22.  They then went on to win 25-23.
   
  In the 2nd set, Logan jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Christian Co. tied it at 5-5 and 6-6.  That was the last time the match would be tied as Logan would go up 17-12 and 22-15.  Christian reached to within 3 points  at 19-22 before Logan put the match away 25-19.
   
  In the 3rd set, Logan started off hot and was up 6-2.  Christian Co. tied it up at 11-11 and 14-14 before Logan took a 19-16 and then a 21-18 lead.  Christian Co. sided out and served out the match to claim the 25-21 win.
   
  Kayla Wade had an .804 passing percentage and 2 aces.
  Bailey Joiner had 17 assists, 1 ace and 1 kill.
  Casey Castile had 5 kills, 2 blocks and 1 ace.
  Zatoria Leavell had 3 aces, 2 kills and an assist.
  Courtney Baker had 4 kills and 2 blocks.
  Nicole Brown had 3 kills and an ace.
  Michelle O'Quinn had 8 kills and 1 block.
• Hopkinsville (12-7) won their fourth straight game with a 25-23, 21-25, 25-19 win over Muhlenberg County. 
• Fort Campbell (11-3) beat Hopkins County Central 15-25, 25-20, 25-9. 
• Heritage Christian Academy beat Glasgow Christian Academy 25-21, 25-10.  The Lady Warriors did get off to a slow start falling behind 11-3 but tying it up at 11 all, only to find themselves down again 17-11. 

   

  "What I love about our team this year, is their ability to hold it together and fight back one point at a time, even when it seems they are in an impossible situation," said HCA coach Keith Sage.  "We were missing two of our starters to sickness, (Grace Waldron and Morganne Mullen)." 

   

  Ray DeCoursey had 7 kills, and Taylor Davey had 2 kills and was 10 for 11 serving with one ace.  Katy Ward went 14 for 16 serving with 6 aces and Abby Weatherford was 10 for 12 on serves and had three aces.  HCA improves to 9-1 overall and returns to action Thursday against Victory Academy in Hopkinsville.

Trigg County set a new record with their sixth straight win Tuesday, a 10-0 shutout of Crittenden County at the Complex.

Lauren Frazier scored the hat trick, her sixth straight game with three or more goals.  Brittany Schafer added two goals, and Trigg County got goals from Brooklyn Thomas, Ellie Jolly, Carly Dothsuk, Rachel Want, and Shelby Cionko.

Jaycie Sittig and Amanda Want had two assists.

Katie Davis got the shutout in goal, with the game called with 22:23 left.

The win over Crittenden County gives the Lady Wildcats a record of 7-3 -- their best 10-game start in school history.  Trigg returns to action Thursday at Mayfield.

In other games Tuesday:

• Hopkinsville beat Warren Central 10-0, setting the mercy rule into motion with 29 minutes left in the game.  Lexie Bozell had four goals, and Bennett Peck added three.  Payton Bucko, Hannah Snyder, and Kelsey Humphries each had a goal, and Snyder had two assists.  Christiane Soldo had the shutout in goal.  Hoptown also won the JV game 5-0 behidn two goals from Morgan Watkins.  Mallory Smithson and Hallie Killebrew had the shutout. Hopkinsville (8-1-1) plays in the Lady Donley Classic at Madisonville Saturday.
• Christian County (3-5-1) and Lyon County (2-4-1) played to a 2-2 tie.

• University Heights Academy defeated Todd County Central 4-0 behind a hat trick from Eden Mack.  Jeri Beth Higgins also had a goal for the Lady Blazers (8-1).  Layon Atwood had the shut out in goal.  UHA also won the JV game 7-1 as Alyson Parker and Connor East each had two goals. 

Trigg County sets records in shutout win

Trigg County shut out Dawson Springs 7-0 Tuesday and set a school record in the process.  The shutout win was Trigg's fourth straight, besting the old mark of three set in 1995 and 2006.  For the season, Trigg has six shutouts.  The school record is 10 set two years ago.

Against Dawson Springs, Aaron Yielding and Colten Bridges each scored twice, and Jared Stallons and Clark Adams each added a goal.  Trigg also benefited from an own goal by the Panthers.

Joel Ben Thomas and Romaine Cunningham each had assists for the Wildcats, who improve to 11-0-1 on the season.  The 12-game unbeaten start to the season also betters the school record set last year.

Trigg County has a 9-0 career mark against Dawson Springs, including two wins this year by a combined score of 15-0.

The win comes a day after Trigg County scored their first shutout win over Caldwell County in nine years.  Jared Stallons scored two goals in the 2-0 win, which gives the Wildcats the inside track for the top seed in the district tournament.

Trigg County returns to action Thursday at home against St. Mary (5-9).

In other games Tuesday:

• Christian County (7-5) won their third game in four chances with a 5-1 win against Caldwell County (5-4-1).
• Marshall County shut out Murray 1-0

Emma Talley cleared to play in state golf tournament

Caldwell County's Emma Talley has been cleared to play in the state golf tournament.

In a press release from the Kentucky High School Athletic Association --

In a conference call on Friday, September 10, the Board of Control, at the request of Commissioner Julian Tackett, reviewed a potential issue related to participation in the postseason golf tournaments by Emma Talley of Caldwell County and Justin Thomas of St. Xavier High School.

Talley and Thomas were two of twelve individuals in the nation selected to participate in the Junior Ryder Cup, the most prestigious amateur golf representing the United States. The event is being held September 27 and 28 at the Gleneagles Resort in Gleneagles, Scotland, and requires travel by the two students, who have represented their schools continually during this regular season, at the time of the scheduled regional tournaments.

The Board approved Tackett’s recommendation that in the event that the teams from these two schools do not qualify for the state tournament, the two individuals would be added to the state tournament as individual participants. If the teams qualify, a waiver is not necessary as any individual on the regular season participant list can substitute on a qualifying team.

“It seems nearly unconscionable that we would ask these two individuals, who have represented their school all season and throughout their careers, to choose between representing their country and representing their school at the most exciting time of the year”, Tackett said. “Working with Assistant Commissioner Butch Cope, who formerly headed our golf operations, we worked the last few weeks to find a way for these two to be able to play in our state tournament should they desire to do so, and not impact any other student-athlete. It would be different if this were any other event, or if these were not regular season participants throughout the year. It seems like the perfect win-win situation that benefits kids, which should always be our primary objective where possible.”

Both Talley and Thomas have already played an 18-hole competitive round on the respective regional courses that will be used for their school, and that score will be used to place them in first-day pairings should the waiver be necessary.

You have to pay attention at the ballpark

Dodger fans are known for arriving late and leaving early at the ballpark.  And they don't pay much attention when they are there either.

Trigg County, Fort Campbell likely moving up to Class 3A in football

Both Trigg County and Fort Campbell are likely moving up to Class 3A when the new football alignment cycle is announced later this year.

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association normally sets the football alignment on a four-year cycle.  The current cycle ends after the 2010 season.  Football coaches usually have their next season's schedules close to finished by this time, but the delay in the alignment announcement has made them hold off on scheduling until they see which class they are in and who their district opponents will be.

If the KHSAA takes the average male enrollment of each school from the past two years, as is expected, both Trigg County and Fort Campbell would jump to Class 3A.  Also moving up would be Heath, but that would be for just one year as they are consolidating with Reidland and Lone Oak into the new McCracken County High School for the start of the 2011-12 school year.

Schools in the 3A region will likely be Trigg County, Fort Campbell, Heath, Webster County, Monroe County, Paducah Tilghman, and the new South Warren High School, which begins playing football next year.  Don't be surprised to see a district that consists of Trigg, Fort Campbell, Heath, Tilghman, and Webster County next year.  It would be the first time Trigg County has ever played above Class 2A in size. 

Other strong programs statewide in Class 3A would likely be Belfry, Monroe County, Central, Breathitt County, and Corbin.  Also moving down to Class 3A would be Bell County, the 2008 Class 4A state champion.

In breaking down the Class 2A numbers, Crittenden County and Ballard Memorial would jump from 1A to 2A.  Union County would drop from 3A to 2A.  You would likely see a Class 2A district of Crittenden County, Ballard Memorial, Union County, Reidland, Caldwell County, and Murray.  Reidland would leave the district in 2011 (consolidation).

Class 1A would likely remain unchanged for the most part according to the enrollment averages.  Mayfield, Fulton City, Fulton County, and Russellville would be the western most schools.  Russellville has been playing in Class 3A the past four years, citing travel issues for playing up in class.  That request may not be honored for the next four years, unless the KHSAA drops Ballard Memorial back to 1A.

In Class 4A, enrollment figures show the western most schools would be Franklin-Simpson, Warren East, Allen County-Scottsville, Lone Oak, Calloway County, and Hopkins County Central.  Madisonville and Owensboro would both drop from 5A to 4A according to the averages.  That would likely mean a district of Calloway, Hopkins Central, Lone Oak (one year), Madisonville, and Owensboro.  Also dropping to Class 4A would be current 5A power Highlands, who has been playing up a class for the past several years.

In Class 5A, the western most schools according to the enrollment averages would be Hopkinsville, Warren Central, Ohio County, Bowling Green, Greenwood, Grayson County, and Christian County.  Dropping from Class 6A into 5A would be Graves County and Apollo.  Look for District One to consist of Hopkinsville, Christian County, Graves County, Apollo, and perhaps Ohio County.

There aren't many western Kentucky schools in Class 6A, according to the enrollments averages for the past two years.  Muhlenberg County, Marshall County, Daviess County, and Henderson County would likely comprise District One.

The KHSAA is expected to announce the official realignment in the coming months, which will allow football coaches to begin scheduling for 2011.

Wildcat Chevrolet Bowl tonight at Perdue Field

Perdue Field will host the Wildcat Chevrolet tonight at Perdue Field in Cadiz.

In the first game, Calloway County (0-2) will play Greenwood (2-0) at 5pm.

The 8pm nightcap has Trigg County (0-2) hosting Hopkinsville (1-1).  Hoptown leads the all-time series, which dates back to 1953, 16-1-1.  Trigg's lone win in the series came in 2007.  In their last meeting in 2008, Hoptown won 49-21.

Airtime tonight for Trigg County and Hoptown is 6pm on WKDZ 106.5 FM with the Friday Night Blitz.

 

Frazier sets school record in Trigg soccer win

Trigg County sophomore Lauren Frazier scored a school-record six goals to help Trigg County blast Crittenden County 10-0 Thursday night in Marion.

Frazier had three assists in addition to her six goals, giving her 15 on the season.  Brooklyn Thomas added the hat trick for Trigg and assisted on two other goals.

Amanda Want had a goal and an assist for Trigg, who tied a school record for margin of victory with the 10-goal win, equaling the mark set against Union County in 2008.

Trigg County evens their record at 3-3 on the season and will travel to Fort Campbell Tuesday.

In other games Thursday:

• Hopkinsville won their sixth straight game with a 7-1 win over Mayfield.  Hoptown will host Marshall County Tuesday.
• Caldwell County ran their record to 7-0-1 with an 8-1 win over Hopkins County Central. 
• Barren County edged Todd County Central 2-1.
• Marshall County hammered Calloway County 7-1.

 

Thursday's volleyball scoreboard

Trigg County lost to Fort Campbell 25-20, 25-10 Thursday night in volleyball action on post.  The Lady Falcons improved to 9-2, while Trigg County fell to 4-7.  Fort Campbell hosts Hopkinsville Tuesday, while Trigg County goes to Calloway County next Thursday. 

In other games Thursday:

• Caldwell County improved to 8-1 by hammering Livingston Central 25-7, 25-3
• Hopkins County Central beat Webster County 25-14, 25-15
• Marshall County beat Murray 25-15, 25-14
• Hopkinsville fell to 8-7 with a 12-25, 25-16, 19-25 loss to Russellville

 

In games tonight, Christian County travels to Lexington to play in the Lafayette Invitational.

Coming Home: Al Baker

Al Baker, Trigg County's all-time leading rusher, came home to speak at the Trigg County Century Club annual dinner Thursday night.

Baker ran for 5,396 yards from 1981-85, which was the fourth highest total in Kentucky history at the time of his graduation.

Baker still holds the Class 1A state record in the 100-meter dash at 10.7 seconds.  The overall state record is 10.46 seconds by Tyson Gay of Lafayette High in 2001.  Gay recently beat Olympic Gold Medal star Usain Bolt in the 100 meters.

Baker's 40 time his senior year was 4.5 seconds.  Not bad for a guy who could also bench press 360 pounds, squat 600 pounds, and deadlift 585 pounds.

Baker went on to play football at the University of Kentucky, telling the crowd he came close to quitting the team his junior year but decided to stick it out on the advice of family and friends.

It paid off.  His senior season, Baker ran for a team-high 780 yards and 10 touchdowns.  He also caught 35 passes for 317 yards and two touchdowns and was named Second Team All-SEC.

Baker was taken by the New York Jets in the 10th round of the 1991 draft, although injuries caused him to leave camp before playing a game in the NFL.

Al currently lives in Ashland, Ky. with his wife and three kids.

Back when Baker played, only the district champion advanced to the playoffs.  Despite a 27-14 record in his four seasons of high school football, Trigg was 0-4 against Mayfield which kept them out of the playoffs.

Baker said the 1984 team, which went 7-4 with losses to Glasgow, Christian County and Mayfield (10-0), would have had the best shot to beat the Cardinals had they met again in the playoffs.  He also talked about which team put a bounty on his head.

Wildcats win seventh straight game

Trigg County won their seventh straight game with a 4-2 win over Hopkins County Central Thursday night at the Complex.

Romaine Cunningham scored two goals for the Wildcats, and Blaine Alexander and Aaron Yielding each added goals.  Trigg County improves to 7-0-1 with the win -- their seventh straight.  Trigg will host Reidland Tuesday.

In other games Thursday:

• Mitch West and Vontrae Lewis each scored a pair of goals to lead Christian County (5-4) past Todd County Central 4-3.  Lewis also had two assists for the Colonels.
• Hopkinsville and Henderson County played to a 2-2 tie in the Boots and Butts Classic at the Stadium of Champions.  The Tigers will play St. Mary and Bishop Brossart Saturday.
• Lone Oak beat Fort Campbell 6-4.
