University Heights 12 Fort Campbell 3

University Heights scored six runs in the first inning and three more in the second and mad eit stand up in a 12-3 win over Fort Campbell Monday in Hopkinsville.

Before the game, players, coaches, fans, and family joined in remembering Elizabeth Atwood, a UHA infielder who was killed in a traffic crash last month.  A blue and white cross with her name on it was erected beyond the right field fence, and players from both teams gathered around it for a short pregame memorial service.

On the field, Sarah Covington and Shayna Hudson each had three hits and 2 RBIs, and Hadley Burns had two hits and two RBIs as the Lady Blazers won their season opener.  UHA had 15 hits in the game, with all nine starters getting at least one hit.

Kaitlyn Lewis scattered three hits and gave up two earned runs, striking out 10.

Jenna Caracillo had an RBI single for the Lady Falcons (0-2), with Caitlyn Jay taking the pitching loss.

UHA (1-0) will host Livingston Central today, while Fort Campbell hosts Hopkinsville.

Kentucky vs. West Virginia

Kentucky has not made a Final Four since winning the NCAA title in 1998.  Standing in their way are the Mountianeers of West Virginia.

Autistic teen has picked a perfect NCAA bracket

My bracket is still in good shape (Duke picked over Kansas State) despite the loss of Final Four pick Georgetown on the first day.

However, Illinois teen Alex Herrman still has a perfect bracket.  No misses so far.  Alex also has Autism.

Herrman, who has autism, says that he studied all season for the tournament ... but unfortunately entered one of the only online pools that doesn't have a prize. Yahoo offers $1 million for a perfect bracket; SportsBook.com offers $13 million.

Trigg Arrowcats bring home top three finishes at state meet

Trigg County's Arrowcats came home with top three finishes at the Kentucky Archery in Schools State Competition in Louisville.

Trigg Elementary finished in second place, with Elizabeth Wagner and Kimberlee Shelton tying for fifth place in the female division wih a score of 275.

Brooklyn Stevens finished 12th (271); Kayla Bingham was 16th (270); and Kaila Cunningham was 17th (270).  There were 371 archers in the elementary female division.

Clay Stevens was Trigg's top male shooter in the elementary division with 15th place finish and a score of 277.  Braden Miller was 20th (275); Gabe Nolcox and Cole Holland tied for 44th place (266); Dakota Overton was 51st (264); and Cody Wilson was 62nd (260) out of 588 archers.

Trigg County Middle also took second, with Skylar Pool taking first place overall in the male division with a score of 291.  Jake MacNab finished 11th with a score of 282, followed by  Devin Litchfield in 28th (276); Evan Smith in 45th (272); Alan Fox in 49th (271); and Colton Livingston in 51st (270) out of 494 archers.

In the female division, Shaye Patterson finished in third place with a score of 287.  Emily Holder and Sarah Shipley tied for 19th with a score of 276; Patsy Banister was 29th (270); Lexie Hyde was 37th (269); and Ashley Wyatt was 52nd (266) out of 278 archers.

Trigg County High finished third with Alexis Wiseman taking fifth place in the female division with a score of 288.  Sloane Patterson took sixth place with a score of 287.  Emily Shipley was 19th (280); Breanna Messmer was 21st (280); Ashley Allen was 24th (280); Kyler Herndon was 26th (279); and Jennifer Hyde was 28th (277) out of 270 archers.

For the guys, Matthew Brokering had Trigg's top finish in 13th place with a score of 289.  Jeremy Alexander finished 21st (286); Jordan Futrell was 34th (283); Landon Sumner was 44th (281); and Mark Ledford was 58th (278) out of 391 archers.

Trigg's teams just missed winning a couple of state titles.  In the elementary division, Trigg's score of 3238 was five behind Shopville Elementary of Somerset.

In the Middle School division, Trigg's second place score of 3308 was seven behind the winner, Bondurant Middle of Frankfort.

At the high school level, Meade County High won with 3394, Madison Southern was second with 3392, and Trigg County was third with 3388 points. 

All three Trigg teams advance to the National Competition to be held in Louisville in May.

Boomer Ball today: Dawson Springs at Hopkinsville (softball)

Our next Boomer Ball broadcast will be today at University Heights Academy as the Lady Blazers host Lyon County Hopkinsville as the Lady Tigers host Dawson Springs in the season opener for both teams.

Lyon County was 10-13 last year, while UHA was 14-11.

Hopkinsville was 11-19 last year, while Dawson Springs was 14-9.

Christian County 15 Trigg County 5

Kyle Spencer had three hits and drove in two runs, and Christian County scored in every inning to beat Trigg County 15-5 Monday in the 2010 season opener for both teams.

Christian County batted around in the first inning in plating five runs.  Phillip Morgan drove in two runs with an RBI single as part of a two-hit day.

The Colonels led 7-0 after two innings before Trigg County rallied with five runs in the third.  Hunter Smilie drove in two with a single, and Jared Stallons added an RBI single.

However, Christian County scored four runs in the bottom of the third and four more in the fourth to invoke the mercy rule.

Mitchell Blackmon plated two runs with a single in the third inning, and Cole Isom had a two-run single in the fourth.

Isom picked up the win on the mound, allowing two earned runs in four innings, striking out three and walking three.  Smilie took the loss for Trigg, giving up 11 runs, seven of which were earned.

Trigg County hosts Christian Fellowship today at 6pm at the Complex, while Christian County hosts Hopkins County Central at 5:30pm at Colonel Field.

Seth Davis says Kentucky has the toughest road to the Final Four

Seth Davis picks three #1 seeds to advance to the Final Four, but Kentucky isn't one of them.  He says Kentucky has the toughest road to the Final Four.

Here are some of the highlights from my interview with the CBS college basketball analyst:

• Davis says Kentucky is capable of winning the NCAA Tournament but their age could work against them.
• Doesn't think Texas would be Kentucky's toughest opponent in the first three rounds.  He says Temple will be.
• Has Kentucky losing to West Virginia in the Elite 8.
• Likes Murray State but picked Vanderbilt to beat the Racers.
• Doesn't like Louisville's inconsistency at the guard position and says the likely won't beat Duke.
• Davis likes (11) San Diego State to beat (6) Tennessee, (13) Siena to beat (4) Purdue; and (12) Utah State to beat (5) Texas A&M.
• Doesn't think a mid-major will crash the Final Four.
• Says the NCAA uses geography in keeping team close to home over using the so-called 'S-Curve' when placing teams and seeds in the bracket.
• Picks Kansas to win it all.

Christian County opens play in Sweet 16 Wednesday

Christian County opens play in the Boys Sweet 16 Tournament Wednesday night at 6:30 pm (ET) against Ninth Region champ Newport (29-5).

Newport is making their first trip to the Sweet 16 since 1962 and knocked off defending state champion Holmes 60-34 to advance to the state tournament.

Here goes as we enter another round of March Madness.  Refresh often for updates.

A few thoughts leading up to the big reveal:

• Everywhere I've seen have Kentucky, Kansas, and Syracuse as number one seeds.  Joe Lunardi of ESPN has Duke as a number one seed.  Bracketography.com, Sean Bartels and Gary Parrish of CBS Sports has West Virginia pegged as the number one seed. Lunardi and Bartels say Kentucky will play in Milwaukee.  Bracketography says Kentucky will play in Syracuse.
• If Mississippi State and Minnesota are both bubble teams, Mississippi State's loss to Kentucky is worth more to me than Minnesota's loss to Ohio State.
• If Duke is indeed a number two seed, look for the NCAA CBS to put them in Kentucky's region.
• For the local cable fans, here's hoping Kentucky plays at a time opposite of Tennessee and Vanderbilt since Mediacom only offers one CBS station.
• Anyone want to give an over/under for Masters promos by CBS during the selection show?
• Dave Winder said CBS will have a live look-in at Murray State during the show

And now time for the big reveal:

• TOP OVERALL SEED: Kansas, in the Midwest Region.  Kentucky is the number one seed in the East Region.  Duke is the number one seed in the South Region.  Syracuse is the number one team in the West Region.
• Duke is a number one seed so that they match up with Kentucky in the semifinals.  Thanks CBS.
• That means Sweet 16 and Elite 8 in Syracuse for UK if they advance that far.

MIDWEST REGION

• Two mid-majors against each other.  Theme of the NCAA selection people.
• Michigan State vs. Kansas a potential tough Sweet 16 matchup.
• Great 7-10 matchup with Oklahoma State and Georgia Tech
• Georgetown slips to a three seed.  Ouch.
• Tennessee slips to a #6 seed.  Was expecting a 4 or 5.  Seth Davis predicts San Diego State to beat Tennessee.
• At first glance, that's an awful tough bracket for Kansas.  Michigan State, Tennessee, Ohio State, and Georgetown.  Wow.

WEST REGION

• Wow.  A potential Gonzaga/Syracuse second round game.
• Vanderbilt is a #4 seed and will play Murray State, a #13 seed.
• Florida sneaks in as a bubble team.
• Minnesota gets in as a bubble team.  I think Mississippi State's bubble just burst.
• Good draw for a good UTEP team
• A much easier bracket top to bottom than the Midwest.

EAST REGION

• Kentucky vs. East Tennessee State on Thursday.  Not a lot of turnaround from today.
• Texas is the #8 .  Wake Forest is the #9.
• Temple could be a tough third round game for UK.
• West Virginia is the #2 seed opposite Kentucky.  Wow.
• A Pac-10 team makes it in.  Washington is in.
• Not a real scary bracket for Kentucky, although Wisconsin and Temple both slow it down.
• Seth Davis doesnt agree with me.  He calls it "brutal"

SOUTH REGION

• Cal/Louisville first round game opposite Duke
• Utah State is another bubble team that got in
• Purdue slips to a #4 seed.  Robbie Hummel's injury killed them
• Villanova is the #2 seed.
• St. Mary's is a #10 seed.  Tough matchup for Villanova.
• Baylor is a #3 seed
• Mississippi State does not make the tournament

OTHER NOTES

• Big East gets 8.  Non-power conference gets 8 in.  SEC gets four in.
• Rhode Island and Virginia Tech have the best argument for not being in.

Selection Sunday Live Blog

Trigg County to return to the All-A Classic

After a four-year absence, Trigg County will return to the All-A Classic in 2010-11.

The basketball coaches learned of their All-A Tournament matchups at a meeting last week.  Trigg County's boys will host Livingston Central Jan. 18, 2011 in the first round.  They will play the winner of Crittenden County and Lyon County in an upper bracket that matches this past year's district tournament.

Dawson Springs hosts Caldwell County in the bottom bracket wih University Heights getting a first round bye.

The semifinals will be Jan. 21, 2011 at Crittenden County High School with the championship game the following night.

For the ladies, Trigg County will play at Lyon County on Jan. 17, 2011.  They will play the winner of Dawson Springs and Caldwell County.

The lower bracket has Crittenden County at University Heights with Livingston Central getting a first round bye.

The semifinals will be Jan. 20, 2011.

Trigg's boys have played in the All-A championship four times, winning a title in 1997. The girls have advanced to the finals once.

Trigg County replaces Fort Campbell in the All-A.  Fort Campbell's enrollment exceeded the guidelines set forth by the All-A Classic.

The inclusion in the All-A Tournament also includes soccer, golf, volleyball, baseball, and softball, with those pairings to be announced later.

While Trigg's enrollment isn't declining, the consolidation of several smaller schools around the state have dropped Trigg into the bottom 125, which sets the All-A eligibility.  With Heath and Reidland getting consolidated into the new McCracken County High School, Trigg may stay in the All-A for a while.

However, the future fate of Fort Campbell in the All-A Classic isn't known with student growth on post growing.
