District titles on the line tonight

Old friends renew their rivalry tonight at Tiger Gym as Hopkinsville and Christian County meet for the 19th time with a district title on the line.

Christian County (25-4) beat Hopkinsville (21-7) twice during the season, 77-67 on Jan. 18 and 86-74 on Feb. 1.

Hopkinsville's last district title came in 2004, while Christian County has won three of the last four 8th District titles.  Christian County is 14-4 against Hoptown in district title games and have won nine of the last 10 against the Tigers with district hardware on the line.

They will tip it off at 8pm tonight at Tiger Gym.

At 6pm, the girls' 8th District title will be played between Hoptown (15-8) and Christian County (13-14).  The Lady Colonels have won nine straight district titles and swept the season series with Hoptown.

Overall, Christian County has won 20 district titles, and Hoptown has claimed eight.

In the Fifth District tonight, Lyon County (20-5) and Livingston Central (11-11) meet for the boys district title for the second time in three years.  Livingston is looking for their first district title in 16 years.

In the Seventh District, Madisonville and Hopkins County Central meet for the boys district title at 8pm.  Madisonville's girls and Caldwell County's girls play for the title at 6pm at Hopkins Central High School.

In the Sixth District at Union County, Henderson County and Webster County meet for the gals' district title tonight.

Lyon County 32 Trigg County 29

In the lowest scoring game in Fifth District Tournament history, Lyon County beat Trigg County 32-29 Tuesday night to advance to Friday's championship game.

Both teams had multiple chances to win the game in the final minutes, but it was Lyon County that did just enough to get the win.

Audrey Futrell hit a free throw with 3:35 left to tie the game at 29, but it would be Trigg's last points of the game.  Trigg County was 1-of-8 from the field and 1-of-7 at the free throw line in the fourth quarter.

Futrell led Trigg County with nine points, while Morgan Parker added eight points and 10 rebounds.

Allison West led Lyon County with 13 points, and Rachel Rhodes scored 10.

The previous low for points by both teams was 68, last done in 1994 in a Caldwell County 40-28 win over Lyon County.  The 29 points scored by Trigg is the fewest in the district tournament since a 58-29 loss to Caldwell County in 2005 and the fewest in any game in three seasons.

Trigg has still never won a game in Rocket Arena since it opened in 2005 (0-8 overall).

For Trigg County, their season ends with a record of 10-13.  However, it's the first time in seven years that Trigg County has posted consecutive 10-win seasons.

Lyon County improves to 12-15 and will advance to Friday's championship game where they will play Crittenden County, a 57-38 winner over Livingston Central.

Jessi Hodge scored 20 points, and Crittenden County forced 24 Livingston turnovers for the Lady Rockets, who will try and win their first district title since 1984.

Livingston Central 62 Trigg County 48

Livingston Central ended the game on a 15-4 run to beat Trigg County 62-48 in the semifinals of the Fifth District Tournament at Rocket Arena in Marion.

Livingston only hit 2-of-9 shots in the fourth quarter but hit 12-of-16 at the free throw line.  For the game, Livingston was 16-of-24 while Trigg was 4-of-7.

The Wildcats were outscored 18-9 in the fourth quarter, hitting just 3-of-14 shots and turning the ball over four times.

Livingston led 19-12 after one quarter and 30-23 at halftime.  Trigg battled to tie the game at 37 midway through the third quarter.  Down 47-44, Livingston Central rebounded a missed free throw which began a 13-3 run to seal the win.

In his final game as a Wildcat, Zeke Wright had 18 points and seven rebounds.  Deonquez Nance came off the bench to score 13 points.  Jalik Alexander scored eight points.

Justin Kittel led Livingston Central (11-11) with 16 points, and Kenneth Cowsert added 12 off the bench.  Lucas Croft scored 11.

Trigg County's season ends with a record of 12-14.

Livingston Central will play Lyon County in the championship Thursday night.  Lyon County (20-5) outscored Crittenden County 14-4 out of the gate and went on to win 44-30.

Timmy Perdue and Bryant Houk each had 11 points, while Taylor Gray added 8 points and 11 rebounds.

District Tournaments begin tonight

District Tournament action begins across the Commonwealth tonight as the postseason begins at various sites.

The Boys' Fifth District Tournament begins tonight at Crittenden County High School in Marion.

Top seed Lyon County (19-5) is the lone district team with a winning record.  The Lyons play the host Crittenden County Rockets at 6pm tonight.

Lyon County swept Crittenden during the season, winning 55-40 in December and 36-27 in Marion in January.  The Lyons feature one of the top defenses in the state, allowing just 43 points a game and holding 10 of their opponents to under 40 points.

Crittenden County (11-14) was 3-13 at the end of January but has won eight of nine coming into the postseason.

The Rockets have not won a district title since 1998 and have lost three straight district tournament games.

In the 7:30pm nightcap, second seed Trigg County will play third seed Livingston Central.

The Wildcats (11-12) have won four of the last five district titles, including last year and have won six of their last seven first round games.

Trigg County beat Livingston 52-48 in December but lost 82-70 in January.  The 82 points scored was a season high.

Trigg comes into the postseason having lost seven of their last 10 games.

Livingston Central (10-11) enters the post season having won four of their last six games.  The Cardinals last won a district title in 1994.  Livingston has lost five straight postseason games.

Arnika Brown breaks her own rebound record for WKU

It was quite a senior night for Arnika Brown.  Just seven days ago, the former Christian Couny Lady Colonel set a new Western Kentucky Lady Topper record with 24 rebounds. Last night, she topped her own mark with 25 rebounds in a 67-61 win over South Alabama.

Brown - one of four seniors playing her final game at Diddle Arena - also tied the women's arena record that was set by Robin Hendrix of Middle Tennessee on Jan. 22, 1981.  Brown also scored 18 points.

The victory helped move the Lady Toppers one step closer to securing the third seed in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament as they improved to 11-4 in league play and 17-9 overall. South Alabama fell to 14-13 and 9-7 in the Sun Belt.

Trigg County 68 Todd County Central 55

Trigg County almost blew a 15-point fourth quarter lead but ended the game on an 11-3 run to beat Todd County Central 68-55 Tuesday night at Wildcat Gym.

The game was a wild one and saw Rebel head coach Terry Nofsinger ejected in the third quarter.  KHSAA rules state Nofsinger has to sit out two games, which could include next week's district tournament game unless he schedules a last-moment game Saturday.

Nofsinger questioned a potential lane violation on a Trigg County free throw and became more incensed with the official's explanation, which prompted the two quick technicals.

Trigg County hit five of the six free throws, which was part of a 9-0 Wildcat run that gave them a 10-point lead.

The Wildcats led 45-30 less than a minute into the fourth quarter before the Rebels rallied with a 13-0 run to draw to within two at 45-43.

Trigg again extended the lead and then finished the game with a spurt to even their record at 12-12 on the season.

Javin Grubbs led four Wildcats in double figures with 19 points.  Zeke Wright had 14 points and 12 rebounds, and Jaylen Mount had 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Robert Sergant led Todd County (5-18) with 16 points.

The win by Trigg snapped a three-game losing streak to the Rebels.  Todd County still leads the all-time series 39-20.

Trigg County will host Hopkinsville Friday night at Wildcat Gym.

Todd County Central 59 Trigg County 54

Todd County used a late 6-0 run to beat Trigg County 59-54 in girls' basketball action at Wildcat Gym Tuesday night.

Trigg trailed 50-47 with 2:38 left, but the Lady Rebels scored six straight points to push the lead out to 56-47 with 58 seconds left.

The game was tied at 28 at halftime before Todd County scored the first eight points of the second half.  Trigg never led in the second half.

Ashley Matlock was the lone Lady Wildcat in double figures with 19 points.  Brooke Kearney scored nine points, and Rachel Want had six points and 12 rebounds.

Evelyn Turner paced Todd County Central (8-15) with 21 points, including four 3-pointers.

GAME BOXSCORE

Todd County Central has won 19 straight games against Trigg dating back to 1986, although the five-point loss was the closest Trigg has played Todd since a four-point loss in 1988.  Todd County leads the all-time series 27-4.

Trigg County falls to 10-11 and will host Hopkinsville Friday night.

Region I Wrestling Meet Results

Here are the Region I Wrestling Tournament results from Saturday at Ohio County High School.

Union County won the team competition with 262 points.  Christian County was second with 152 points, followed by University Heights (149), and Fort Campbell (136).  Hopkinsville was 10th and Trigg County 12th.

"I was very happy with the overall performance of our wrestlers. A few of them lost early matches yet they continued to battle back and earn team points as well as qualify for the state individual tournament," Christian County head coach Robert Burnham said.

Trigg County had two wrestlers finish in the top six of their class.

"I was pleased with how they did.  You can see the improvement they have made since the first practice of the year.  I'm proud of them," TCHS head coach Ralph Stevens said.

The top four finishers in each class advance to this weekend's state meet at Frankfort.

University Heights softball player killed in car crash

Sad news today as Elizabeth Atwood, a junior infielder on the University Heights Academy softball team, was killed in a one-car crash on the Western Kentucky Parkway early this morning. 

Atwood was a passenger in a car driven by George Barnes, 18, of Hopkinsville.  The two were reportedly returning from Lexington after attending the Kentucky/Tennessee basketball game.

Caldwell County 70 Trigg County 49

Caldwell County used a 13-0 first quarter run and a 15-5 second quarter run to take control of the contest and beat Trigg County 70-49 Friday night in throwback night at the old Butler Gym in Princeton.

Caldwell hit seven of their first 10 shots and took advantage of 19 Trigg turnovers to score 24 points in the game.

Jayme Jackson led Caldwell County (13-9) with 20 points and five assists, while Casey Stone added 18 points and five rebounds.  Emily Meeks scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

Ashley Matlock scored 22 points for the Lady Wildcats.  Freshman Khadijah Grubbs came off the bench to score nine points and grab nine rebounds, while fellow freshman added five points and seven boards.  Brooke Kearney hit two 3-pointers and scored eight points.

Despite Caldwell County committing one more foul in the game, they hit 22-of-31 free throws (71%) compared to 7-of-18 (39%) for Trigg.

Caldwell County scored the first ten points of the second quarter and later the last ten points of the second quarter to post a 78-66 win over Trigg County Friday night at the Butler Gym in Princeton.

Caldwell broke open a tied game with a 22-4 second quarter run to take command of the game, hitting 9-of-16 shots in the quarter while Trigg was just 1-of-13 from the floor.

Down 53-33 late in the third quarter, Trigg County rallied with a 19-6 run to cut the lead to 61-54 with 3:56 left in the game.  Trigg further cut the deficit to 69-63 with 2:10 left but Caldwell hit 5-of-6 free throws and Trigg would have just one more field goal the rest of the way.

Trigg County had three players reach double figures.  Mitch Rogers scored all 15 of his points in the second half, with nine of those coming in the fourth quarter.  Zeke Wright added 15 points and six assists, and Jaylen Mount had 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Caldwell County (5-17) got 31 points from Tron Gray, who hit 12-of-15 at the free throw line.  In three games against Trigg County this year, Gray has scored 89 points.  Dwight Wisdom added 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Trigg County to play Dawson Springs Saturday

Trigg County will play Dawson Springs Saturday at 7pm in a game rescheduled from Tuesday.

Wildcat head coach Mike Wright said he didn't know if the game against Fort Campbell that was called off on Jan. 29 would be rescheduled but that it appeared unlikely.

8th District Tournament Pairings

The dates and times for the Eighth District Basketball Tournament have been announced.  Fort Campbell is the host of the tournament, but it will be held at Hopkinsville High School.

The Kentucky New Era reported that ticket prices are tentatively set for $5 but they may rise if extra security is needed to patrol the games.  There were two different skirmishes involving the teams inside the gym and a fight outside of Tiger Gym earlier this month when Christian County and Hopkinsville played which could prompt the extra security.

The seeds for both tournaments are the same.

Friday's Caldwell County games will be at the old Butler Gym

Friday night's boys/girls doubleheader at Caldwell County will be played in the old Butler High Gym on West Main Street in Princeton at the old high school.

Trigg's girls (9-9) will play Caldwell County (12-9) at 6pm, followed by Trigg's boys (10-11) and Caldwell County (4-17) at 7:30pm.

Trigg County last played a game in the Butler Gym in 1988, which was the final year for the school before moving to their current location.  Trigg's boys lost that game 73-46, while Caldwell's girls won the first half of that doubleheader 64-57.

Trigg's boys have a record of 16-15 in the gym against Caldwell County.  They were 3-6 against Butler High School there from 1938-53.

Trigg's girls are just 2-12 in the Butler Gym, winning games in 1983 and 1985.

According to the Princeton Times-Leader, at halftime of the girls game there will be a presentation to the late Russell Milton, who had a state record 48 rebounds against Marion on Feb. 19, 1957.  The 48 rebounds has been recognized as a state record.  The presentation will be made to Milton's widow.

The Times-Leader also said Friday will be the fourth time that Caldwell County has played a game at the Butler gym since moving and the first in four years.

The first throwback game was held on Jan. 16, 2004, which was a 75-64 boys win over Livingston Central.

Caldwell played a varsity doubleheader against Livingston at the Butler Gym on Feb. 11, 2005.

A doubleheader against Lyon County on Dec. 3, 2005 was the last time high school games were played at the Butler Gym.

Mother Nature is not a basketball fan

Mother Nature has shown she is not a basketball fan with the recent winter storms causing havoc on Trigg County's basketball schedules.

And unless some frantic scheduling is made in the next two weeks, the number of February games will be as low as its been in recent years.

With tonight's postponement of Trigg's game at Dawson Springs, the Wildcats will have four regular season February games if they do not reschedule it.  Last year they had seven.  The four games would be the fewest in Febraury since 1943 when they only played two games in a limited schedule.  Trigg played five February games in 1944.

In 2001, Trigg County lost the final week of the regular season to snow and went nine days without a game before losing to Caldwell County in the first round of the district tournament.

While the Dawson Springs is likely to be rescheduled, it is unlikely the Feb. 1 doubleheader with Stewart County, Tennessee will be made up.  Also in limbo is the Jan. 29 doubleheader at Fort Campbell.

In the past, Trigg County has scheduled late games on the Saturday before the district tournament.  The last time was in 1996 when they beat St. Mary.  That was their fourth game in five days, and Trigg went on to lose to Lyon County in the first round of the district tournament a few days later.

For the Lady Wildcats, they have six February games scheduled not including a possible make up game with UHA from tonight so the scheduling doesn't appear to be an issue.

Trigg County basketball games postponed

In a move that shocks no one, Trigg County's basketball games tonight have been postponed because of the snow. 

Trigg's boys were scheduled to play at Dawson Springs.

Trigg's girls were scheduled to play at University Heights Academy.

No make up dates have been announced.

Trigg County is scheduled to return to action Friday in a boys/girls doubleheader at Caldwell County's Butler Gym.

Logan County 67 Trigg County 44

Logan County scored 20 points off 21 first half Trigg County turnovers and went on to beat the Lady Wildcats 67-44 tonight at Wildcat Gym.

Trigg County had 10 first quarter turnovers as Logan County built a 21-8 lead. Trigg had 10 more turnovers in a second quarter that saw Logan outscore them 14-4. For the game, Logan County scored 27 points off 32 turnovers.

Trigg hit just 5-of-23 shots (21%) in the first half. They warmed up to 40-percent in the second half on 12-of-30 shooting.

Alyssa Maxey had 15 points and seven rebounds to pace Trigg County, who also got 11 points and seven rebounds from Morgan Parker. Senior Audrey Futrell scored eight points and was later named TCHS homecoming queen.

Logan County (15-9) was led by Ann Dorris, who scored 17 points. Sara Speck added 15 points and eight rebounds for the Lady Cougars, who shot 38-percent from the field and hit six 3-pointers.

Trigg County mounted a late rally in the fourth quarter but couldn't overcome cold shooting from the field in their 68-64 overtime loss to Logan County Saturday night at Wildcat Gym.

The Wildcats trailed by as many as nine points in the fourth quarter and were down 56-50 with 39 seconds left.  However, four straight free throws (two normal and two on a Logan technical foul) brought Trigg to within two points.

Zeke Wright's putback with 14 seconds left gave Trigg a 57-56 lead.  Logan's Tyler Davenport was fouled with seven seconds left and hit one of two free throws to tie the game at 57.  Trigg County got off three 3-point attempts in the final 32 seconds, including one at the buzzer, but none connected.

In the extra frame, Logan hit 4-of-8 shots from the field and 3-of-6 free throws to outscore Trigg 11-7.

The Wildcats shot 40-percent from the field (24-of-60) but were an abysmal 1-of-21 from 3-point range, including 0-of-10 in the fourth quarter.  They were 23-of-39 (58%) from inside the arc against the taller Cougar team.

Logan County outrebounded Trigg 44-34, which led to 16 second chance points.

Zeke Wright led Trigg County with 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Jalik Alexander scored 15, and freshman Deonquez Nance came off the bench to score 11 points.

Logan County (11-13) got 23 points, 18 rebounds, and seven steals from sophomore Twin Lancaster.

Trigg County (10-11) has lost their last three overtime games -- all at home.  They are scheduled to return to action Tuesday at Dawson Springs.

Josh Adams signs with Campbellsville University

Josh Adams signed a letter of intent to play football at Campbellsville University today.

Adams said he will likely play defensive back for head coach Perry Thomas' Tigers.  Adams said he also considered Bethel University in McKenzie, Tennessee.

Adams' older brother Jeff is a starting offensive lineman at Louisville.

St. Mary 53 Trigg County 49

Peyton Vaughan hit seven of eight free throws in the final minute to help St. Mary hold off Trigg County 53-49 tonight at Wildcat Gym.

The St. Mary guard finished with 17 points and was 10-of-14 at the free throw line for the game. Trigg County fell behind 17-8 after one quarter and was forced to play catch up the rest of the game.

St. Mary built a 35-26 lead midway through the third quarter and led 44-36 early in the fourth quarter before Ashley Matlock keyed an 8-0 run with six straight points to tie the game at 44. Despite St. Mary not making a field goal for the final 7:33 of the game, Trigg County endured a three minute scoreless streak of their own, and St. Mary was able to knock down enough free throws to get the win.

The Lady Vikings finished 15-of-24 at the charity stripe, while Trigg County was 8-of-13.

Matlock finished with 14 points and nine rebounds, and Khadijah Grubbs came off the bench to score eight points.

NFL: When is enough enough?

Just how much is enough for the NFL?

The New Orleans Saints are on their way to the Super Bowl, and their fans are taking their "Who Dat" chant with them.  However, the NFL says fans can't buy anything with the phrase on it because they now say THEY own the phrase.

The NFL asserted rights to the phrase earlier this week through the Florida Department of State, and it has issued cease-and-desist orders against New Orleans vendors who sell Saints memorabilia adorned with the wording. According to the Wall Street Journal, the NFL informed vendors that using the phrase is likely to "confuse the purchasing public into believing that your items" are sponsored by the NFL.

New Orleans locals are outraged and suspicious. The NFL, they contend, never cared about the quirky chant when the football team was dubbed the 'Aints a few decades ago, or after it was ousted from its home stadium in 2005 by Hurricane Katrina and finished 3-13.

Of course, this isn't a new thing with the NFL.

By now, the commercials have hit the airwaves talking about "The Big Game."  And by now, you know which "Big Game" they are talking about.  Why don't they just come out and call it the Super Bowl like everybody else?

Because the NFL says they can't.

I came across a blog entry from a few years back from Copyfutures, a site dealing with copyrights and advertising.

According to the site, the NFL holds the property rights to all phrases dealing with the Super Bowl for advertising purposes, which means you can't say or print:

• Super Bowl
• Super Sunday
• The Super Bowl logo
• “NFL”, “AFC”, or “NFC”
• National Football League
• American Football Conference
• National Football Conference
• Team nicknames such as Steelers or Cardinals

You can say "the Big Game", "The Professional Football Championship", "Pittsburgh", and "Arizona".

In the past, the NFL has cracked down on Super Bowl Big Game parties, which included a party at a church last year, and Las Vegas casinos.

When planning your party or get together for the "Annual World Championship Game of Football on the Sabbath", keep in mind that the NFL may be lurking around the corner.

TCYAA baseball and softball signups extended until February 12

The deadline for baseball and softball sign-ups at the Complex has been extended to Feb. 12. There will be no late fees.

Sign-up forms will be available in the Trigg County Elementary and Middle schools offices Tuesday.

The deadline will be Feb. 12, and late registration will continue until Feb. 13.

The TCYAA will offer eight leagues for both boys and girls ages 3-15.

Austin Peay to host Oral Roberts in ESPN BracketBuster game Feb. 20

Austin Peay State University will play host to Oral Roberts, Feb. 20, as part of the ESPN BracketBuster series, it was announced Monday. Game time tentatively is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. following the 5:15 p.m., Lady Govs-Tennessee Tech Ohio Valley Conference matchup.

The game will not be televised by the ESPN family of networks.

This will be the fourth meeting between the two schools, with APSU holding a 2-1 advantage. Oral Roberts and Austin Peay, however, have not met since the 1977-78 season. This will be the Golden Eagles first trip to Clarksville.

It's also a homecoming of sorts for ORU assistant coach Chris Crutchfield, who was a member of Hopkinsville's 1985 state championship basketball team.  Crutchfield is in his third season as an assistant at Oral Roberts after previous serving on the staff at Texas Christian and New Mexico State.

This is Austin Peay’s seventh appearance in the BracketBuster-related event—more than any other OVC school. It is APSU’s third home game in the series.  For a fourth straight season all OVC schools are participating in BracketBuster. The Govs are 2-4 in BracketBuster contests.

Oral Roberts, like the Govs, owns an overall 13-10 record. It sits in third place in the Summit League with an 8-3 record. The two teams have one common opponent—the Golden Eagles defeated Missouri, 60-59, in Tulsa, Dec. 9, while the Govs lost 94-79 to Missouri in Columbia, Mo., Dec. 27. 

Scott Sutton, son of legendary coach Eddie Sutton, is in his 11th season as Golden Eagles head coach and owns a 197-136 record, having led Oral Roberts to three NCAA tournament appearances along the way.

Four Golden Eagles average in double figures, led by 6-6 forward Dominique Morrison (15.3 ppg) and 6-5 forward Michael Craion (13.1 ppg).

This is ORU’s fifth BracketBuster game but first since a 65-64 home loss to Creighton in 2008. The Golden Eagles are 1-3 all-time in the BracketBuster series.

ORU and Austin Peay are forever linked. Lake Kelley, the late former Austin Peay basketball coach who served two APSU tenures, left Austin Peay the first time after the 1978-79 season to become head coach at ORU (1977-79). Former APSU player Calvin Garrett, a first-team All-OVC selection while at APSU, joined Kelly in Tulsa and earned All-America honors at ORU. 

Former Austin Peay athletics director Bob Brooks sandwiched two tenures as Oral Roberts athletics director around his time at APSU (1984-88).

As part of BracketBuster contractual obligations, Austin Peay will visit Tulsa during either November or December of 2010 or 2011.

Austin Peay, 7-4 in the OVC, will put a three-game winning streak on the line 7:30 p.m., Thursday when it travels to UT Martin.

Trigg County/Stewart County doubleheader cancelled

Trigg County's home doubleheader with Stewart County, Tennessee tonight has been cancelled because of road conditions and because of a Stewart County policy that cancels sporting events when they have no school.

Don't look for this one to be rescheduled.
