Someone having some fun at the expense of Joker Phillips

It hasn't been a good night for Kentucky offensive coordinator Joker Phillips.

His conservative playcalling at the end of the fourth quarter was called into question by many fans, seemingly happy to play for the field goal and the tie instead of the touchdown and the win.

It didn't get any better in overtime as Kentucky went three and out and missed a field goal.  Tennessee followed with a touchdown and their 25th straight win over the Wildcats.

Saturday Morning Sports Report for Nov. 28, 2009

I recapped the Friday night football playoffs and previewed the state finals in Bowling Green.  Donny Caver of the WHVO Sports Crew weighed in on Fort Campbell's 30-16 win over Monroe County.

Wednesday's basketball roundup

• Former Christian County Colonel C.J. Trotter scored 11 of his 13 points in the first half to help Southern Indiana to a 93-73 win over Tiffin College.  Trotter hit three 3-pointers and dished out four assists as the Eagles improved to 2-0.
• Karlos Thompson (Hopkinsville) had two points and two rebounds for Spaulding University in their 70-64 loss to Muskingum College, the alma mater of former senator and astronaut John Glenn.
• Bradley Davis (Trigg County) saw his first action of the year for Mid-Continent College in their 89-62 win over William Woods College.  Davis played four minutes and attempted two shots in his first college game.
• Melly Heaton (Caldwell County) scored 17 points to help Campbellsville to a 93-72 win over Oakland City.  The Lady Tigers are now 6-0.

Kentucky vs. Stanford tonight on WKDZ

Kentucky will play Stanford tonight in the championship of the Cancun Challenge.

The game is being played in the ballroom of the Moon Palace Resort.  There were reports of an open bar just a few feet away from the player's benches.  No word if the crowd was treated to a free continental breakfast.

Airtime on WKDZ 106.5 FM is 7pm, with tip-off at 8:30pm.  With their win over the fighting Mouse McFaddens of Cleveland State, John Calipari joins Eddie Sutton as the only coaches since Adolph Rupp to start their UK career 5-0.

Nine Trigg County football players have been named to the Class 2A All Western Kentucky Conference Football team.

They are quarterback Andrew Stewart, defensive back Jaron Gilbert, fullback Akeem Wilson, linemen Tavaras Poindexter and Javin Grubbs, running back Dillon Cionko, defensive back Mitch Rogers, linebacker Jamus McAtee, and safety Josh Adams.

However, Trigg County did not have any players named to the overall All-WKC team or the Small School WKC team that is made up of players in classes 1-3.

Kentucky Football Coaches Association District players and coaches of the year

Christian County football coach Steve Lovelace has been named the Class 5A, District 1 coach of the year based on voting by the Kentucky Football Coaches Association.

Owensboro quarterback Kal Prince was named the District 1 player of the year.

Fort Campbell quarterback Antonio Andrews was named the Class 2A, District 2 player of the year, while Falcon head coach Shawn Berner was named coach of the year.

Murray's Brandon Wicks was named the Class 2A, District 1 player of the year, while Tiger head coach Steve Duncan was named coach of the year.

In Class 1A, Mayfield's Xavier Shelton was named the District 1 player of the year, while Cardinal head coach Joe Morris was named coach of the year.

In Class 3A, McLean County running back Spencer Phillips was named District 1 player of the year, while Union County's Steve Carter was named coach of the year.

In Class 4A, Lone Oak quarter back Cameron Looper was named District 1 player of the year, while his coach Jack Haskins was named coach of the year.

In Class 6A, Henderson County's Dean Wathen was named District 1 player of the year, while Graves County's Lance Gregory was named coach of the year.

All of the statewide winners will be recognized at the state football finals next week in Bowling Green.

Monday Basketball Roundup

• Former Caldwell County standout Melly Heaton buried a 27-foot 3-pointer at the buzzer to help Campbellsville beat Bethel College 69-67.  The junior guard finished the game with 11 points as Campbellsville moved to 5-0 on the season.  On Friday, Heaton scored 13 points to help Campbellsville beat Harris-Stowe University 85-70 in McKenzie Tenn. at the Roy N. Baker Classic
• Former Christian County Colonel C.J. Trotter had six points and three rebounds in 11 minutes of action as Southern Indiana won their season opener 84-61 over Harris-Stowe State.  One of Trotter's field goals was a 3-pointer.
• Former Christian County Lady Colonel Denisha Mumford continues to contribute off the bench for Tennessee State.  The freshman guard had two points and six rebounds in 16 minutes of action as Tennessee State lost to San Diego 79-45 in the Maggie Dixon Classic in Chicago.  She also had two points against Cornell in the consolation round as the Lady Tigers fell 92-73.
• Arnika Brown had 17 points and 11 rebounds to help lead Western Kentucky to an 81-74 win over South Dakota State Sunday.  Brown was 7-of-9 at the free throw line as the Lady Toppers improved to 3-0.
• Brown's former teammate at Christian County, Lydia Watkins, saw her first action of the year for Kentucky as the Wildcats beat Chattanooga 65-55 to run their record to 4-0 on the season.  Watkins, who has battled some early injuries, came off the bench to score six points and grab three rebounds in 18 minutes of action. 
• Former Hopkinsville Tiger Karlos Thompson had four points and five rebounds in a starting role for Spaulding University as they dropped their first game of the season to Wilmington College 78-52.  Spaulding is now 1-1 on the season.
• Former UHA Blazer Scotty Hopson struggled in Tennessee's 57-53 win over DePaul.  Hopson hit just 2-of-10 shots and scored four points and grabbed three rebounds.  Tennessee (4-0) will play Purdue tonight in the title game of the Paradise Jam in the Virgin Islands.
• Hopson's former teammate, Tyshwan Edmonson scored eight points and grabbed three rebounds to help Midland College beat Southwest Texas JC 102-78.  Midland is off to a 7-0 start, with the former UHA Blazer averaging eight points a game.
• Joshua Mack had four points and four assists off the bench for Mississippi Valley State in their 102-56 win over Champion Baptist.  Mack is in his first season with the Delta Demons after transferring from Coastal Carolina.
• Former Heritage Christian Academy standout John Fraley had 16 points and 11 rebounds to help lead Austin Peay State University to a 69-67 win over Niagra in the final game of the Glenn Wilkes Classic Sunday in Daytona, Florida.  The double-double was the first of Fraley's career with the Governors.

Fort Campbell 28 Murray 21

Fort Campbell scored with 14 seconds left to beat Murray 28-21 to win their third straight Region I football title.

The Falcons improved to 13-0 with the win, while Murray's season ends at 12-1.

Fort Campbell will play Monroe County (10-3) Friday at Austin Peay State University.

• Trigg County's Lady Wildcats play their final preseason scrimmage tonight at Community Christian in Paducah at 6pm.  Trigg County opens their season Dec. 1 against Fort Campbell.
• Trigg's middle school girls play at North Drive Middle School tonight.
• Heritage Christian Academy hosts Jo Byrns tonight in a boys/girls doubleheader at 6pm.
• Former Trigg County Lady Wildcat Janada Acree had two points and four rebounds for Wabash Valley College as the Lady Warriors fell to Cincinnati State College 81-74.  The Lady Warriors enter the weekend with a record of 1-3.
• DaQuan Brown had eight points and three assists to help Southeastern Illinois College to a 103-49 win over New Creations Prep.  The former UHA Blazer is averaging 10.5 points as SEIC is off to a 3-2 start.
• Marshall County golfer Travis Thompson has signed to play at Murray State University, while Madisonville basketball player Lyndi Tedder has signed to play basketball for the women's program at Oakland City University.

Keeping up with the local players

• Scotty Hopson had a career high 25 points to lead Tennessee to a 124-49 thrashing of UNC-Asheville.  The former UHA Blazer also had five assists in the game for the Volunteers, who led at one point 57-8.
• Hopson's former teammate at UHA, Tyshwan Edmonson, scored five points and had two assists to help Midland College beat Weatherford College 80-58.
• Former Christian County Colonel DaQuan Murden had seven points to help Shawnee College beat Rend Lake 76-64.  Shawnee improved to 4-0 and is averaging 106 points a game on offense.
• Another former Colonel, C.J. Trotter, had six points and two rebounds off the bench as Southern Indiana beat Centre College in an exhibition game 88-58 in Evansville.
• Corey Wilford had 10 points, five rebounds, and three assists to help Connors State College of Oklahoma improve to 6-0 with an 82-72 win over Richland College. 
• Former Hopkinsville High standout Karlos Thompson grabbed nine rebounds and blocked two shots to help Spaulding University beat Shawnee Bapstist 92-32.

Byers finishes 15th at the state cross country meet

 
Lynease Byers turned in Trigg County's best cross country finish in over 15 years with a 15th place finish in the Class 2A State Cross Country Meet Saturday in Lexington.

Byers' time was 21:10, which was over a minute behind the winner, Jenna Rogers of Christian Academy-Louisville.

"She ran her best race at the best time," coach Mike Wright said.  "She probably passed five girls in the last little bit to finish in the top 15.  She ran great."

In the boys race, Romaine Cunningham finished 75th in a time of 18:46.

Trigg girls to scrimmage Tuesday

Your first chance to see the Trigg County Lady Wildcats will be Tuesday night in a scrimmage at Wildcat Gym at 6pm against Russellville.

Trigg County was 10-16 last year, while Russellville was 13-14.

Trigg County will have their final scrimmage Thursday at Community Christian of Paducah.

Meanwhile, Trigg County's boys will scrimmage Whitesville Trinity of the Third Region Friday night at 6pm at Wildcat Gym.

Their final scrimmage will be at Madisonville next Tuesday.

Both Trigg County teams open their season Dec. 1 against Fort Campbell at Wildcat Gym.

Kentucky 72 Miami of Ohio 70

John Wall proved to be worth the wait.

The heralded Kentucky freshman scored 19 points - including the game-winning jumper with 0.5 seconds remaining - to lift the fourth-ranked Wildcats to a 72-70 win over Miami of Ohio on Monday night.

After Miami's Kenny Hayes hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 70 with six seconds left, Wall raced down the floor and pulled up from the wing. The ball fell through the net and Wall raced up the floor pounding his chest in celebration as the crowd roared.

Patrick Patterson had 17 points and 10 rebounds and DeMarcus Cousins had 10 points and 10 boards for the Wildcats (2-0).

Justin Hageman signs to play baseball for Western Kentucky

Hopkinsville pitcher Justin Hageman has signed to play baseball at Western Kentucky University, according to the Kentucky New Era.

Saturday's story said Hageman, who will be a senior at Hopkinsville High, was 5-3 on the mound last year with a 1.60 ERA, following a sophomore campaign that saw him go 8-0 with a 0.64 ERA. He struck out 83 in 66 innings pitched.

The New Era story also said Hageman continues to draw interest from several Major League Baseball teams, including the Braves, Brewers, and Yankees.

Denisha Mumford scores six in her Tennessee State debut

Former Christian County Lady Colonel Denisha Mumford scored six points in 15 minutes of action in her Tennessee State debut Saturday. 

The Lady Tigers opened their season with a 74-63 loss at Jackson State.  Mumford's points came on two 3-pointers, and she added four rebounds.

Corey Wilford, Tyshwan Edmonson off to good starts

Former Christian County standout Corey Wilford is off to a fast start for Connors State College in Oklahoma. 

Wilford, a freshman, is averaging 10.6 points a game as Connors State, located in Warner, Oklahoma, has won their first six games of the season.  Wilford scored 16 points in his second game for the Cowboys, who compete in the National Junior College Athletic Association.

Meanwhile, Tyshwan Edmonson has adjusted well at Midland College in Texas.  The former University Heights Academy All-State player is averaging 8.7 points a game in helping the Chaparrals to a 4-0 record. 

Edmonson scored 12 points in Midland's 83-59 win over Lee College Thursday.  Edmsonson is a sophomore at Midland, after transferring from St. John's University in the spring.

Former Falcons are doing well on the gridiron

A couple of former Fort Campbell Falcons are doing well for Western Kentucky University despite the team's bad record. 

Sophomore Orlando Misaalefua is fifth on the team in tackles (48) and has a forced fumble. 

Josh Carter, one of the few true freshmen to play for the Hilltoppers, has 16 tackles, including two for loss from his linebacker position.

Meanwhile, Stacye Whipple is putting up solid numbers for Bethel College (Tenn.). 

The former Falcon is a freshman defensive lineman for the Wildcats and has 22 tackles in nine games, including a sack and a tackle for loss.  Whipple also has three fumble recoveries and an interception. 

Bethel is 5-6 overall but 4-2 in their conference.

At Murray State, Dexter Durrante was moved to the backfield where he has run 10 times for 55 yards.  He also had seven tackles on defense.

Linebacker Josh McWherter has 15 tackles in 10 games.

C.J. Croft part of a new NCAA record

Two Kentucky players were part of an NCAA record over the weekend.

Daniel Passafiume, a sophomore from Louisville (St. Xavier), set a NCAA all-divisions single-game record with 25 receptions for 153 yards and two touchdowns in Hanover's Saturday game against Franklin College. The effort surpasses the mark of 24 catches set by NFL hall-of-fame receiver Jerry Rice and Chas Gessner.

Rice had 24 catches for Mississippi Valley State University in a 1983 game against Southern University. Gessner collected 24 balls for Brown University in a 2002 game against the University of Rhode Island.

Passafiume's performance was featured on ESPN, ESPN News and television stations nationally, as well as being highlighted in newspapers such as USA today, Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times and Orlando Sentinel.

Former Fort Campbell quarterback C.J. Croft (right) also put up huge numbers in the losing effort.  Croft completed 42-of-57 passes for 304 yards and three touchdowns and added 181 rushing yards on 25 carries and another score.  However, it wasn't enough as Hanover lost to Franklin College 42-28 Saturday in their season finale. 

For the season, Croft, a sophomore, completed 56-percent of his passes for 2,163 yards and 27 touchdowns against 15 interceptions.  He also led the Panthers in rushing with 577 yards and two scores. 

Hanover finished their season at 3-7.

Austin Peay getting contributions from several local players

Several local players have been solid contributors for Austin Peay's football team this fall. 

Former Trigg County standout Rick Woods is wrapping up his senior season with the Governors.  Woods, a linebacker, has played in seven games, recording three tackles and recovering a fumble. 

His teammate, former Fort Campbell Falcon LaDarius Davis, has 30 tackles, including 13 for loss and has recovered a fumble from his cornerback position.  He also picked off a pass in Saturday's 24-21 win over Tennessee State. 

Freshman Darric Dillard, from Hopkinsville, has 13 tackles this year, while sophomore Chris Litteral, also from Fort Campbell, has two catches for 18 yards as a tight end for the Governors, who close out their season Saturday against Tennessee-Martin. 

Ben Collins, a defensive end from Christian County, has 13 tackles, including two for loss and is second on the team with two sacks.

Janada Acree settling in at Wabash Valley

Former Trigg County basketball player Janada Acree is settling in at Wabash Valley College in Indiana.

Acree is averaging 4.7 points and 2.7 rebounds through three games as a freshman, including a season-high eight points in her second game of the season. 

The Lady Warriors are off to a 1-2 start on the season and play Cincinnati State Tuesday.

Acree is wearing #00 for the Lady Warriors and is a teammate of Danielle Dixon from Henderson County.

Murray State has asked football coach Matt Griffin to leave

Murray State announced today that head coach Matt Griffin will not return for a fifth season as head coach.  The Racers were just 11-33 in four seasons as head coach and were never a factor in the Ohio Valley Conference race.

Murray State will play at Tennessee Tech Saturday.

The Lady Ambush 99 soccer team won the Veterans Invitational Soccer Tournament over the weekend in Evansville.

The Lady Ambush beat the Oldham County Thoroughbred U-11 team 5-3.  Kinley Waldrop scored two goals with Baleigh Ross, Lilly Hall, and Cailey Burman each adding a goal. Michaela Langhi had an assist, and Meredith Pace had eight saves in the goal.

The Lady Ambush beat the Brentwood (TN) 99 Girls Academy 6-0 behind four goals from Burman and two from Waldrop scoring two. Pace had eight saves in the shutout.

On Sunday, the Lady Ambush defeated the Evansville Soccer Club 5-1. Waldrop and Burman each scored two goals with Michaela Langhi scoring one. Burman had an assist and Pace had 16 saves.

In the championship game, the Lady Ambush defeated the Thoroughbreds Soccer Club (KY) 99 by the score of 4-1. Burman scored two goals with Langhi and Hall each adding a goal. Langhi also had an assist, and Pace had 19 saves.

Coaches of the team are Jeff Addison and Ben Hall.

Western Kentucky fires David Elson

Western Kentucky has fired head football coach David Elson.  A press conference has been scheduled for 1pm this afternoon to discuss the move, according to ESPN.com.

The Hilltoppers are 0-9 this year, which is Western's first full year in the Football Bowl Subdivision play.

Elson is 39-41 in seven seasons on the Hill.

Trigg County qualifies two for state cross country meet

Trigg County qualified two runners for the state cross country meet following their performances at the Class 2A, Region I meet Saturday in Russellville.

Lynease Byers finished second, some 33 seconds behind Paducah Tilghman's Aleja Grant, to make a return trip to Lexington.  Alex Olin finished in 21st place (25:06), followed by Hannah Barnett in 39th (31:34).

Union County won the team title ahead of Webster County.  Hopkinsville finished fifth and qualified two runners for the state meet -- Aunye Christian, who finished 10th and Frankie Mullen, who was 12th.

For the guys, Romaine Cunningham took fifth place to qualify for the state meet.  Matt Savage finished 38th, Garrett Brown 43rd, Debo Mayes 48th, Jakelzie Martin 52nd, J.B. Hendricks 53rd, and Jake Mitchell 57th.

Webster County won the team title, while Hopkinsville finished sixth, and Trigg County was seventh.

For Hopkinsville, Kenny Longstreath finished 14th, and Irell Patterson was 15th to both qualify for the state meet.

In Class 1A, Dawson Springs' Amber Genseal won the girls' race to help the Lady Panthers finish second and qualify for the state meet.  St. Mary won the team title, and Fort Campbell finished third.  Ashley Gibson led Fort Campbell with a third place finish, and Alli Lever was sixth.

For the guys, St. Mary's James Maglasang won the region meet by more than a minute over Fort Campbell's Bryan Beeler.  St. Mary won the team title, while Fort Campbell was second.

Colton Chappel of Dawson Springs finished fourth and qualified for the state meet.

In the Class 3A Region I Meet at Marshall County, Christian County qualified a pair of runners for the state meet.  Sean Hird finished fourth, while Danny Johnson took 22nd.  They helped the Colonels to a sixth place finish.

In the girls race, Christian County's Emily Holmes qualified for the state meet with a 20th place finish.

The state cross country meet will be run Saturday at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington.

Trigg County 41 Owensboro Catholic 14

Trigg County used a strong rushing attack to beat Owensboro Catholic 41-14 Friday in the first round of the Class 2A Playoffs at Perdue Field.  The win snaps a five-game losing streak to the Aces -- all in the playoffs.

Dillion Cionko rushed for a career-high 259 yards on 20 carries and scored twice as the Wildcats rolled up 448 yards on 54 carries.  Akeem Wilson added 89 yards on 13 carries, and Josh Adams had 74 yards on nine carries.  He also threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to Nick Watkins in the fourth quarter.

Owensboro Catholic (3-8) had 212 total yards.  Quarterback Evan Harvey was 15-of-31 passing for 174 yards.  He threw two touchdown passes to Cole Sturgeon and threw two interceptions.

The Aces were held to 38 rushing yards on 21 carries.

Trigg County (7-4) has won six straight games and will play at top-ranked Fort Campbell Friday.

Fort Campbell rolled up over 400 yards in the first half and coasted to a 56-7 win over Caldwell County Friday at Fryar Stadium.

The win was Fort Campbell's 11th straight playoff win and 40th win in their last 41 games dating back to the 2007 season.

Tre Powell had five catches, four of which went for touchdowns.

Former Racer Popeye Jones charged with DUI

Dallas Mavericks assistant coach and former Murray State Racer Ronald "Popeye" Jones was arrested and charged with DUI early Monday in Richardson, Texas, near Dallas.

According to the Dallas Morning News, Jones refused a field sobriety test and resisted arrest, causing him to tumble to the ground.

Cross Country teams compete at Meet of Champions

The annual Meet of Champions was held at Masterston Station Park in Lexington Saturday, featuring one of the largest fields of the year in addition to the middle school state championship.

In the Elementary School race, Ethan Dossett finished 17th out of 432 runners with a time of 12:03 over the 2.4-mile course.  Reagan Hyde finished 156th in a time of 13:51, while Sebastian Skinner was 273rd (14:55).

In the boys' middle school race, Debo Mayes finished 175th, covering the 2.7-mile course in 17:01.  Brian Dossett took 214th in a time of 17:24, followed by J.B. Hendricks in 251st (17:50).  There were 431 runners in the race.

In the girls elementary school race, Anna Morgan paced Trigg County with a finish of 187th in a time of 15:27.  Kayla Bingham finished 212th in a time of 15:39, followed by Jordan Woodall in 251st (16:05), and Emily Andreina in 415th (21:17).

In the girls middle school race, Alex Olin led Trigg County with a 152nd place finish in 19:09, while Jessica Brashears was 319th in 23:02 and Hannah Barnett was 344th in 24:23.  There were 364 runners in the race.

In the Class 2A girls varsity race, Lynease Byers finished ninth out of 93 runners with a time of 22:05 over the 3.1-mile course.  Romaine Cunningham took 12th place out of 157 runners in the boys varsity race with a time of 18:10.  Matt Savage was 83rd in 20:56, Garrett Brown was 89th (21:08), Jakelzie Martin was 96th (21:25), Jake Mitchell was 146th (25:23).  As a team, Trigg County finished 14th out of 17 teams.

Christian County also competed in the event.

Eric Powell took 89th in the boys elementary school race in a time of 13:06, while Alex Lancaster was 91st (13:08), Logan Scott 109th (13:21), Jonathon Beymer 116th (13:30), Justin Newby 185th (15:01), and Ty Meacham 424th (19:24).  As a team, Christian County finished 17th out of 52 teams.

Powell turned around and ran in the middle school race, finishing in 40th place in 15:29.  Matt Johnson was 144th (16:48), Brandon Scott 204th (17:19), and Brandon Clark 347th (19:29).

In the girls' elementary school race, Rachael Snyder finished 38th in a time of 13:36.  Brookelyn Meacham was 155th in a time of 15:00, while Kaylea Johnson was 160th (15:03), Kara Orten was 245th (16:02), Chayla McCullough was 288th (16:43), and Karalyn Beymer was 308th (16:58).  As a team, Christian County finished 23rd out of 49 teams.

In the middle school race, Natalie Homa was 220th in a time of 20:23, while Lindsay Thomas was 283rd (21:54), and Kayln Phipps was 287th (22:02).

The Region I meets will be held next Saturday.  Trigg County and Hopkinsville will compete in the Class 2A meet at Logan County, while Christian County will run in the Class 3A meet at Marshall County.
