Trigg County 5 Todd County Central 0

Lauren Frazier scored her second hat trick in as many games, and Kelci Winn added two goals as Trigg County blanked Todd County Central 5-0 Thursday night in Elkton.

Katie Davis made five saves in goal to preserve the shut out.  Brooklyn Thomas and Brooke Allen each added an assist.

Trigg County also got great defensive play from Millie Futrell, Ellie Jolly, Taylor Davis, and Rachel Want.

Trigg also won the JV game 3-2 as Lauren Frazier scored twice, and Hannah Futrell scored once.

The Lady Wildcats are now 3-0 and will play in the Henderson County Invitational next weekend.

Trigg County 6 Lyon County 1

Trigg County beat Lyon County 6-1 in boys soccer action Tuesday at the Complex despite getting banged up in the process.

Goalie Kevin Latham didn't play after suffering a concussion in Monday's tie with Caldwell County, Wildcat head coach Josh Nichols said.

Devon Wharton and Colten Bridges also left the game early with injuries.

Ezra McNichols started in goal for the Wildcats and didn't allow a goal until the game's final minutes.

Aaron Yielding had two goals for the Wildcats, who are now 2-0-2 on the season.  Trigg will play at Todd County Monday.

Lyon County won the JV game 5-1.  Clark Adams scored Trigg's lone goal.

In other games:

• Hopkinsville beat University Heights 2-1.  Zach Henson scored both of Hoptown's goals, with one coming off a penalty kick.  UHA scored their lone goal off a penalty kick.  Hopkinsville improves to 1-0 and will host Murray Thursday.  UHA drops to 1-1-1 and will host Lyon County Thursday.  Austin Bucko's fourth goal of the year was the lone score in the JV game, won by Hopkinsville 1-0.  Houston Stagner picked up the win in goal for the Tiger JV.
• Caldwell County hammered Dawson Springs 6-1
• Christian County shut out Franklin-Simpson 4-0 to run their record to 1-0-1.  The Colonels will travel to St. Mary Thursday.

Hopkinsville 7 Christian County 0

Lexie Bozell notched a hat trick, and Hunter Neel added two goals as Hopkinsville beat Christian County 7-0 in girls soccer action at the Stadium of Champions.

Payton Bucko and Bennett Peck each added a goal for the Lady Tigers, who got assists from Taylor Reid, Peck, and Bucko.

Hopkinsville is now 2-0 and have outscored their opponents 17-0.  The Lady Tigers will host Henderson County Saturday morning at 10:30am at the SOC.

Hoptown also won the JV game 6-0 behind four goal from Kelsey Humphries.

In other games:

• Sophomore Eden Mack scored four goals, and Shelby Martin added three more and an assist as University Heights beat Todd County Central 7-0 Tuesday in Elkton.  Layton Atwood earned the shutout for UHA, who improved to 3-0 with the win and have outscored their opponents 20-0.  UHA will host Lyon County Thursday night.  UHA won the JV game 3-0 behind two goals from Sally Morse and a goal from Lucy Wang.
• UHA Middle School beat Logan County 5-2 Monday night behind a hat trick from Sally Morse.
• Lyon County shut out Fort Campbell 3-0.

Christian County downs Hopkinsville in cross-town volleyball match

Christian County beat Hopkinsville 17-25, 25-15, and 25-12 Tuesday night in a district volleyball match at Tiger Gym.

"We started out flat and had entirely too many hitting and serving errors in the first game," said Christian County head coach Rick Erickson.  "Hopkinsville did a great job of keeping the ball in play and playing smart.  About half way through the 2nd game, we had to adjust to keeping the ball in play and not attacking." 

Casey Castile had 13 kills, 9 aces and 1 block.

Kayla Wade had 22 assists and 4 aces.

Michelle O'Quinn had 4 kills, 1 ace and 1 block.

Shelby Allison had 3 aces, 2 kills and 2 blocks.

Courtney Baker had 4 blocks and 1 kill.

 

Christian County is now 6-2 (2-0) on the season.

• Livingston Central beat Trigg County 25-20, 25-13 at Wildcat Gym.  Livingston Central improves to 7-3 on the season, while Trigg County falls to 0-3.  No other information on the match was available.  Trigg County travels to Hopkinsville Thursday.
• Caldwell County beat Crittenden County 25-12, 25-9 to run their record to 10-1 on the season.
• Todd County beat Russellville 15-25, 25-20, 25-15.

Trigg finishes second at golf tri-match

Trigg County finished second out of three teams at a triangular golf match Tuesday at Boots Randolph Golf Course.

Trent Parrent led Trigg with a 38, followed by Cole Gardner with a 39, Josh Lowe (40) and Derek Rogers (41).

Calloway County's Brock Simmons took medalist honors with a 35, one shot ahead of teammate Chasten Howard.

Calloway County won the meet with a team score of one-over par 145.  Trigg was second with 158, and Murray was third with 161.

For the ladies, Trigg County's Sierra Bush and Karli Bush each shot a 57, and Madison Chaney had a 58.  Calloway County's Katie Tindell shot a 2-over 38 to take medalist honors.

Trigg County will travel to Deer Lake Thursday to play Livingston Central.

Meanwhile, University Heights won another dual match, knocking off Crittenden County 168-182 at Western Hills Golf Course.

Cameron Allen was the match medalist with a 37, followed by Johns Stevenson (42), Taylor Chapman (43), Kyle Barbee (46), and Chandler West (46).

Crittenden County was led by Joey Pluskota's 43.

Kelci Winn scored three goals and added three assists as Trigg County blanked Crittenden County 8-0 Monday night in Marion.

Lauren Frazier also added her first career hat trick and had two assists for the Lady Wildcats, who also got two goals from Brooklyn Thomas.  Brooke Allen, Ashley Wigand, and Taylor Davis each had assists for Trigg, and Katie Davis had three saves in goal to get the shutout.

Trigg County is now 2-0 on the season and will visit Todd County Central Thursday.

Trigg County also won the JV game 3-0. Sydney Geiger, Shelby Cionko, and Hannah Futrell each scored goals, and Lauren Frazier had an assist.

In other scores, Caldwell County shut out Henderson County 1-0 for their first-ever win over the Lady Colonels.  Nikki Payne had the lone goal for Caldwell County, who is now 3-0.

Trigg County 4 Caldwell County 4

Trigg County scored twice in the final four minutes to rally for an improbable 4-4 tie Monday night at Caldwell County.

Devon Wharton scored at the 76-minute mark to pull Trigg to within 4-3. In the game’s final minute, freshman Blaine Alexander was pulled down inside the box on a shot and awarded a penalty kick. Alexander scored with just a handful of seconds left to tie the game.

“We played well for the first 25 to 30 minutes, but we allowed Caldwell County to speed up the tempo after that,” head coach Josh Nichols said.

Trigg jumped ahead 2-0 on a penalty kick by Alexander and a goal by Jared Stallons off a pass from Ezra McNichols. Caldwell then scored four unanswered goals – two by Jessie Sherrill – to take a 4-2 lead.

Trigg County remains unbeaten at 1-0-2 on the season and will host Lyon County tonight at the Complex. Caldwell County won the JV game 9-1. Trigg’s goal was by Clark Adams off an assist by Romaine Cunningham.

Elsewhere, Fort Campbell hammered Todd County Central 2-1.

Monday's golf results

Jordan Gary shot a 38 for Hopkinsville in a dual meet with Todd County Central at the Hopkinsville Golf and Country Club Monday.  Dallas Gates added a 39, followed by Dayton Jones (40), Conner Gates (44), and Jack Gardner and Lucas Bolinger each with a 46.

Jordan Walters led Todd County with a 46.

Michaela Young shot a 49 for Hoptown to lead the females.

At Mineral Mound State Park, University Heights beat Lyon County 192-203.

John Stevenson and Kyle Barbee each shot a 47, and Cameron Allen and Taylor Chapman each shot a 49 for the Blazers.

Lyon County's Stuart Lipscomb took medalist honors with a 42.

Trigg Middle gets football scrimmage win

Trigg County Middle School scored a 14-0 win over Christian County Middle in a football jamboree over the weekend.

Skylar Pool connected with Quinton Bird on a 15-yard touchdown pass for Trigg County's first score.  Luke McKenzie later added a 20-yard TD run and then hit Mikey White on the two-point conversion pass.

Trigg's defense held CCMS to less than 60 yards of offense.

Trigg County Middle opens their football season Sept. 1 at Hopkinsville Middle.

Union City 45 Trigg County 6

Union City ran at, around, through, and over Trigg County in handing the Wildcats a 45-6 opening season loss Friday night at War Memorial Stadium in Union City.

Union City ran the football 46 times for 288 yards, including 234 in the first half.  The Golden Torandoes averaged 6.1 yards per carry, with nine of the carries for 10 or more yards.

Josh Nicks ran 22 times for 151 yards and scored on runs of 1 and 26 yards.  Union City only threw four passes in the game.

Trigg fell behind 14-0 but answered on a 2-yard run by quarterback Andrew Stewart with 8:35 left in the first half.  The score was set up by a 35-yard pass from Stewart to Jonta Barksdale down to the UC 4-yard line.

Stewart finished 9-of-24 passing for 143 yards but was victimized by six drops by Trigg receivers.  Barksdale caught three passes for 72 yards, while Jaron Gilbert added two for 39 yards.

Down 24-6 at halftime, Trigg County saw the air go out of their sales on the first drive of the second half when a Stewart pass was bobbled by a Trigg receiver and into the hands Keylon Hyde.  Union City scored one play later to put the game out of reach.

Union City's defense limited Trigg to minus-10 yards rushing on 20 carries.  After rushing for over 100 yards in 15 of their last 16 games dating back to 2007, Trigg was held to negative yards rushing for the first time since the 2000 Murray playoff loss that also saw Trigg manage minus-10 yards rushing.

Dillion Cionko ran for 27 yards on four carries, but nine of Trigg's 20 carries were for negative yards, which included three sacks and a bad punt snap that resulted in a 23-yard loss.

Trigg County will play at Graves County Saturday in the Jackson Purchase Alliance Bowl.  Trigg's 8pm game is scheduled to follow the 6pm contest between Mayfield and Trousdale County, Tennessee.  It will be the season opener for Graves, who lost a Saturday scrimmage to Owensboro 50-7.

OTHER NEWS AND NOTES

• It was the first time since 1953 that Trigg County opened the season out of state.  That year, the Wildcats lost to Jo Byrns 20-0.
• Trigg County is now 16-8 all-time against Tennessee schools
• Trigg County has allowed an opponent to rush for 100 yards or more in seven of their last eight games.
• After winning four straight season openers, Trigg County has lost consecutive season openers for the first time in a decade.
• Union City outgained Trigg 319-133 and had 22 first downs to Trigg's 10.
• Ethan Sweno punted four times for an average of 31 yards in his first game as Wildcat punter.
• Union City, minus their 14 seniors on this year's team, will make the return trip to Perdue Field for the 2010 season opener.

Perdue Field bleachers installed

The new visiting side bleachers have been installed and are awaiting inspection before they are opened.  The new section holds fewer people than the old bleachers, which were installed prior to the 1980 football season.  However, the new section meets ADA standards.

A new scoreboard for Perdue Field is expected to be installed in the next week to 10 days.

Trigg County's first home football game is Sept. 4 against Calloway County in the Wildcat Chevrolet Bowl.

Friday Night Blitz begins tonight

The Friday Night Blitz begins our coverage on WKDZ and WHVO tonight at 6pm.

The Blitz will preview high school football games in the area, and you'll hear from coaches Shawn Berner (Fort Campbell), Shannon Burcham (Trigg County), Dixie Jones (Hopkinsville), Scott Shelton (Marshall County), and Steve Lovelace (Christian County).

Hopkinsville needed only 55 minutes to beat Todd County Central 10-0 in girls' soccer action Thursday night in Elkton.

The game was called with 25 minutes left in the second half because of the mercy rule.

Bennett Peck scored five goals to lead Hopkinsville, while Lexie Bozell added four goals, and Payton Bucko scored one.  Josie Stewart had two assists, and Bozell had two.

Hoptown also won the JV game 7-0 as Kelsey Humphries had two goals.

Hopkinsville will play at Christian County Tuesday.

• University Heights shut out St. Mary 6-0.

UHA falls to Madisonville in dual golf match

Madisonville beat UHA in varsity golf match 173-156 Thursday at Western Hills Golf Course.

Madisonville was led by Patrick Hibbs shooting a 34 and earning medalist honors.  Others were: David Rose 39; BJ Sisson 39; and Ben Gatlin 44 and Daniel Stewart 45.

UHA was led by Kyle Barbee who shot a 38 followed by Cameron Allen 42; John Stevenson 46; Taylor Chapman 47 and Mack Moore 48.

UHA will participate Saturday in the Hopkins County Central Storm Invitational at Madisonville Country Club.

• From Cadiz, get to the Purchase Parkway.  You can access the Purchase Parkway through Draffenville, Benton, Mayfield, or Fulton.
• Take the Purchase Parkway into Tennessee and get off at the first exit once you cross the state line.  This will be the U.S. 51 and U.S. 45W exit.  Take the road toward Union City.
• When you come to Highway 22 (Section Line Road), get off and go south on Highway 22.  Leaving U.S. 51, it will cloverleaf onto Highway 22.
• You won't go far, and then you will turn onto U.S. 45W/Highway 184 (Nailing Drive).  Head west on this road into Union City.
• In Union City, turn left onto North Miles Avenue (US 45W).  Take this street until you see the school on your right.

Meet the Wildcats Thursday night

The Trigg County Grid Iron Booster Club will be sponsoring a Meet and Greet the Wildcats Thursday at 6pm in the school cafeteria.  They will have hamburgers, hot dogs, drinks and dessert for five dollars, with the proceeds going to the Trigg County Football Team.

Lightning cancels Lady Wildcat soccer game

Overhead lightning caused Trigg County's Tuesday game at Calloway County to be postponed.  The Lady Wildcats return to action Monday at Crittenden County.

In other games:

• University Heights Academy opened their season with a 7-0 win over Fort Campbell on post.  Sophomore Eden Mack scored two goals while Jeri Beth Higgins, Shayna Hudson, Jacey Luther, Shelby Martin and Katherine Settle scored one goal each. Layton Atwood earned the shutout in the goal.
• In the JV game, UHA won 8-1. Connor East, Eden Mack and Allyson Parker each scored two goals. Sally Morse and Sally Smith added one goal each. UHA returns to their home field on Thursday to play St. Mary at 5:45 p.m. in a girl/boy doubleheader at the Back to School Picnic.
• Hopkinsville's game with Henderson County was postponed and will be made up August 29th. Hopkinsville won the JV game 7-0.  Caroline Noel had 4 goals and Kelsey Humphries had 3 goals. Hayley Rideout and Mallory Smithson combined for the shutout.  Hopkinsville will play at Todd County Central Thursday.

Trigg falls to Crittenden in volleyball

Trigg County dropped their volleyball home opener to Crittenden County 25-9, 25-16 Tuesday night at Wildcat Gym.

The Lady Wildcats fall to 0-2 and will host Livingston Central next Tuesday at Wildcat Gym.  No other game details were known.

Hoptown wins triangular match at Boots

Trigg County was edged by a single stroke by Hopkinsville in a triangular match Tuesday at Boots Randolph Golf Course.

Trent Parrent led Trigg with a 38, followed by Nick Schoate-39 Cole Gardner-39 Josh Lowe-40 and Derrick Rogers-42.

Dallas Gates took medalist honors for Hopkinsville with a 1-over 37, followed by Jordan Gary-39 Conner Gates-39 Jack Gardner-40 and Lucas Bolinger-46.

Hoptown's team score was 155.  Trigg was second at 156, and Crittenden County finished in third place with a team score of 186.

For the ladies, Sierra Bush and Karli Bush each shot a 54 to tie for first.  Hopkinsville's Michaela Young shot a 55.  Trigg's Madison Chaney and Christian County's Madeline Pelletier and Rachel Davis each shot a 61, and Kelsey Thomas had a 63.

Trigg County will be at Lyon County Thursday.

Tom Leach in Cadiz to discuss new book on Rich Brooks

University of Kentucky radio announcer Tom Leach was in Cadiz today to speak to the Cadiz Rotary Club about the upcoming football season and to discuss his new book on Wildcat football coach Rich Books entitled "Rich Tradition."

Leach said the inspiration for the book came following UK's 2007 win over top-ranked LSU

Trigg County 5 Paducah Tilghman 2

Trigg County won a season opener for the first time in the eight-year history of the girls' soccer program.

Taylor Davis scored a hat trick and freshman Lauren Frazier added two goals as Trigg County beat Paducah Tilghman 5-2 in the first-ever meeting between the schools.

Davis assisted on one of Frazier's goals, and Nadia Adams had an assist.

Katie Davis picked up the win in goal for the Lady Wildcats, who return to action today at Calloway County in what will be the season opener for the Lady Lakers.

Paducah Tilghman won the JV game 6-1, with Lauren Frazier scoring Trigg's lone goal.

In other games:

• Caldwell County got four goals from Savannah Pepper to beat Christian County 5-0.  Ashlea Holt scored Caldwell's other goals, with assists from Renee Laurent, Nikki Payne, and Mikayla White.
• Madisonville beat Lyon County 9-3
• Todd County Central shut out Monroe County 6-0.

Trigg County 2 Fort Campbell 2

Trigg County overcame a slow start and rallied to tie Fort Campbell 2-2 in the boys' soccer season opener for both teams.

Fort Campbell scored two goals 10 minutes apart for a 2-0 lead.  Trigg County freshman Blaine Alexander scored both of Trigg's goals unassisted.

"Blaine had a great game and  controlled the ball well in the midfield," said Wildcat head coach Josh Nichols.  "The defense was pretty solid and have exceded my expectations so far.  Jeremy Butts had a good game at defensive midfield, and Jared Stallons worked hard and put a lot of pressure on their defense."

Fort Campbell won the JV game 3-0.

The tie is the first for Trigg in a season opener and 19th in program history.  Fort Campbell leads the all-time series with Trigg 23-2-1.

Trigg County hosts Reidland Thursday.

• Dawson Springs beat Union County 9-1
• Todd County Central shut out Butler County 10-0

 

Hopkinsville falls to Todd Central

Hopkinsville won the first set, but Todd County rallied to win the final two and post a 22-25, 25-16, 25-22 win in volleyball action Monday night in Elkton.

Hoptown (1-2) was playing without starters Lindsey Ezell and Dani Matthews who were out sick.

Todd County also won the JV contest 2-1, while Hopkinsville won the freshman game in three sets.

Hopkinsville returns to action Thursday at home against Hopkins County Central.

On Saturday:

Christian County went 3-2 and finished tied for 9th place out of 24 teams at the Apollo Summer Slam.

On Friday, Christian County beat Ohio County 25-21, 25-12. They lost to Bowling Green 18-25, 19-25.

On Saturday, they beat Hancock County 25-21, 21-25, 25-22 to finish 2nd in their pool and advance to the Gold Medal Round.

In the Gold Medal Round, they lost to Grayson County 25-21, 13-25, 17-25 and beat Paducah Tillghman 25-19, 24-26, 25-18.

Trigg beats UHA in dual golf match

Trigg County beat University Heights in a dual golf match Monday at Western Hills Golf Course 158-175.

Trigg's Trent Parrent was the medalist with a score of 37, followed by Josh Lowe 39; Nick Choate 40; Derrick Rogers 42, and Cole Gardner 45.

Kyle Barbee led UHA with a 40, followed by John Stevenson 41; Cameron Allen 42; Taylor Chapman 52; and Mack Moore 53.

In the girls match, Trigg's medalist was Karlie Bush with a 46 beating out Anna Moore (UHA) 48. Madison Chaney of Trigg came in third with a score of 52.

UHA's JV team beat Dawson Springs 190-211.

UHA was led by Hendley Traughber with a 46, followed by Tyler Stewart 47; Dalton Putty 48; Chandler West 49, and Matt Brin 51.

Dawson Springs was led by Dillon Shelton and Justin Bullock with a 52; Grant McCuiston 53; Schyuler Storms 54, and Trevor McKnight 66.

Trigg County will host Christian County and Crittenden County today at Boots Randolph Golf Course.

UHA's next match will be Thursday against Madisonville at 4:00 PM at Western Hills.  

Trigg County defense strong during scrimmage

Trigg County's defense didn't allow a point in 36 plays during a three-team football scrimmage with Webster County and Marshall County Friday night in Draffenville.

The scrimmage featured 20 offensive plays for each team and one quarter of normal play against each team.

Against Marshall County, the Wildcats allowed 77 yards on 21 plays.  The Marshals gained 25 yards on 15 carries but completed 6-of-9 passing for 52 yards. 

Trigg County's offense gained 126 yards on 28 plays.  Quarterback Andrew Stewart was 7-of-17 passing for 95 yards and rushed for 18 yards on six carries.  Jaron Gilbert had five catches for 84 yards.  Neither team scored.

Against Webster County, the Wildcats held the Trojans to three yards of offense on 15 plays.  Webster lost 10 yards on eight carries, including two sacks.

Trigg gained 103 yards on 28 plays.  Stewart was 4-of-15 passing for 49 yards and added 34 rushing.  Nick Watkins had two catches for 30 yards.

Trigg scored with 2.1 seconds left in the scrimmage when Stewart connected with Josh Adams on a 14-yard scoring strike.

On Webster's final play, Jaron Gilbert picked off a pass and ran it back 56 yards for the score.  Trigg won the scrimmage 14-0.

Marshall County beat Webster County 12-7 during their scrimmage.

Wildcat head coach Shannon Burcham called the showing "Trigg's best in his three years as head coach."

C.J. Trotter signs with Southern Indiana

Former Christian County basketball standout C.J. Trotter has transferred to the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville and will have two years of eligibility left.

The 6-foot-3 guard played at Rend Lake College for two years, averaging 13.6 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.4 assists last season.

USI head coach Rodney Watson told the Evansville Courier that Trotter gives the Eagles "depth on the wing, some length.  He's an athletic wing who can run the floor and he has a long wingspan."

Trotter averaged 10.1 points, three rebounds, and two assists his senior season at Christian County, helping lead the Colonels to the Sweet 16.

Tyler Mitchell finishes 34th at Kentucky Open

Tyler Mitchell of Cadiz finished tied for 34th place Thursday at the Powerbilt Kentucky Golf Open at the Club at Olde Stone near Bowling Green.

Mitchell opened play with an even par 72 in the first round but followed with an 83 in the second round to fall out of contention.  He finished play Thursday with a 4-over 76, which was tied for the 19th lowest score of the day.

Mitchell finished with a score of 231, which was 20 shots behind the winner, Matt Savage of Louisville.  Mitchell was tied for 16th among the amateurs in the event.

Hopkinsville's Logan Loftus shot a final round 83 and finished tied for 68th place.

Wildcat coaches run into scouting issue

Trigg County's coaches and a handful of players were on their way to Union City, Tenn. last week to watch their opening week opponent in a scrimmage with Fayette Academy.

However, they learned on their way to the scrimmage that they would not be admitted to watch the contest.  Not wanting to create an issue or problems, the Wildcat coaches and players turned around a short distance from the school and headed home. 

Trigg County head coach Shannon Burcham had no comment when I asked him about the aborted scouting trip but did confirm they left Cadiz to watch a scrimmage and returned home without seeing one.

Schools are not allowed to film a sporting event they are not participating in, but coaches have long attended preseason and regular season games to scout their opponents.

Burcham also wouldn't comment on Union City's possible motive for not allowing them to watch the scrimmage.  Competitive advantage?  Union City will play in their fourth preseason scrimmage tonight.  Tennessee allows schools up to four preseason scrimmages.  Trigg County will be playing in their first scrimmage tonight at Marshall County.

Trigg County and Union City have never met on the football field.  They have played one time each in boys and girls basketball in recent years, and Union City has played in Trigg County's girls' Christmas tournament the past two years.  To my knowledge, there's never been any issue between the schools.

But it's not the first issue to arise between Trigg County and a Tennessee school in football.

Alcoa, Tennessee was a huge draw for Trigg County's bowl game in 2005.  However, they opted out of their commitment late in the summer of 2006, leaving Trigg unable to find an opponent for Hopkinsville and causing a bowl doubleheader to become a singleheader.

In the 2002 season finale at South Fulton, several Wildcats were the victims of late hits and cheap shots which resulted in a retaliatory ejection of a Wildcat lineman.  After the game, Curtis Higgins and South Fulton head coach Gwin Wood exchanged a few words during the postgame handshake when discussing the style of play and South Fulton's contention that Trigg ran up the score.  Trigg won 41-7.

Let's hope last week's incident is the only issue that comes of the opening game contest at Union City.

But it should make for an interesting return trip when the Golden Tornado visit Cadiz to kick off the 2010 season.

"We played up and down the first two sets of the match. In the third set, the girls turned it on and showed how they are capable of playing," CCHS head coach Rick Erickson said. "Crittenden tipped and pushed the ball a lot and we didn't make any adjustments until the third set. I hope it was just first match jitters and that we are beyond that now."

Christian County will play in the Apollo Summer Slam tonight in Owensboro.

 

Elsewhere, Hopkinsville evened their record at 1-1 on the season with a 25-23, 25-18 win at Russellville.

 

"We played better and worked well at the net," said HHS head coach Mindy Hargrove.  "We clicked better and our serving and passing was much better than Tuesday."

 

Hopkinsville will play at Todd County Central Monday.

 

 

 

 

Toppers ready for full pads, lose Dalcourt to ACL injury

The Western Kentucky University football team practiced in shells one last time Thursday afternoon in preparation for the first practice in full pads on Friday.

"We need to get a little bit of live work in tomorrow and see some tackling and full speed blocking," Hilltopper head coach David Elson said. "We installed a lot today, but we saw some good things out of the offense and we're getting some good timing going with some of the things we are doing."

The offense's productive day was due in large part to the trio of talented running backs in the Hilltopper backfield. Marrell Booker, Tyrell Hayden and Bobby Rainey all return in 2009 and seem healthy and ready to contribute.

"One position that has really come out and is hitting on all cylinders it seems like is our running backs," said Elson. "They are so skilled and are such good route runners that they can give us a lot of different possibilities and a lot of different ways to get them the ball."

Elson also announced on Thursday that freshman quarterback Courtney Dalcourt suffered a torn ACL during Wednesday's practice and will miss the entire 2009 season.

Jeff Adams named preseason First Team All-Big East

Louisville offensive lineman Jeff Adams has been named preseason First Team All-Big East by College Football News.

The former Trigg County standout was one of two Cardinals named to the squad, joining sophomore running back Victor Anderson.

Adams, a 6-8, 305-pound junior, will start his second season at right tackle for the Cardinals.

First football scrimmages are Friday night

The first official football scrimmages of the 2009 season will be held tonight at various locations in the region.

Because of a change in rules regarding scheduling, many teams will only get one scrimmage before the season begins next week.  Teams that opted to start their season Aug. 28 will get two scrimmages.

Meanwhile, Union City, Tennessee will take part in their fourth scrimmage tonight.  Tennessee allows up to four preseason scrimmages.  Kentucky allows two.

Here are some scrimmages tonight:

• Trigg County will scrimmage both Marshall County and Webster County tonight at 6pm at Marshall County.  They will run 20 plays against both teams in addition to scrimmages for the JV and freshmen, Wildcat head coach Shannon Burcham said.  This will be Trigg's only preseason scrimmage.
• Fort Campbell is hosting a four-team jamboree tonight on post.  Christian County will play a half against Calloway County at 6pm.  Clarksville Northeast will play Fort Campbell at 6:45pm.  Calloway will play Clarksville Northeast at 7:30pm.  Christian County and Fort Campbell will square off for a half of football at 8:15pm.  Coverage of the Jamboree can be heard on WHVO 96.5FM and www.oldies1480.com beginning at 6pm.
• Hopkinsville will travel to Murray to play both Murray and Lone Oak in a scrimmage at 6pm at Ty Holland Stadium.

Trigg golfers finish second at Crittenden tri-match

Trigg County finished second to Caldwell County in a triangular golf match Tuesday at the Marion Country Club.

Caldwell County's Andrew Knight took medalist honors with a 38, one shot better than Trigg County's Trent Parrent.

Keith Tandy expected to start at West Virginia

Former Christian County football standout Keith Tandy has been penciled in at starting cornerback for West Virginia this fall.

The sophomore started last year's Meineke Car Care Bowl against North Carolina last year, going head to head with first round draft pick Hakeem Nicks.

From the beginning of the spring, Tandy has been penciled in as WVU’s starting right cornerback. However, the purpose of fall camp is not just about how the expected starters are jelling as a unit, but how others along the depth chart progress as well.

Tandy carries the mindset that nothing is guaranteed, knowing that there is a fight for every position. Along with the cornerback tussle is the encouragement of each competitor, who knows that each player can achieve much individually, but will not see a January bowl game if they don’t work collectively.

“It’s a competition, but it’s a friendly competition,” Tandy said of his position players. “We are on the field competing, but if someone makes a play we jump on the field and pat them on the back. We go to the same places and work out together and hang out together.”

Tandy and the rest of the cornerbacks know that they cannot just confine to themselves, but must also work hand in hand with the safeties. Whether it’s communicating on who is going to jump a receiver’s route or who helps out on a deep ball, Tandy understands the importance of working with the safeties and building an established trust between the two groups.

“That’s one thing we did over the summer is 7-on-7s with the safeties,” Tandy said. “Most of the time during the seasons the corners are by themselves and the safeties are by themselves so we don’t get to work with them too much, but the summer helped out a lot.”

Trigg soccer teams tie in scrimmages

Trigg County's soccer teams saw their scrimmages end in a tie over the weekend as they prepare to open their seasons next week.

The Lady Wildcats tied Lone Oak 2-2 in a scrimmage played at Paducah Tilghman.  Kelci Winn and Lauren Frazier had goals for the Lady Wildcats.  Brooklyn Thomas had an assist for Trigg, who got strong goalie play from Katie Davis and Elizabeth Torian.

Meanwhile, the Wildcats tied Christian County 1-1 Saturday in Hopkinsville.

Colten Bridges scored off an assist from Aaron Yielding for the Wildcats.  Christian County won the JV game 6-0.

Both the Wildcats and the Lady Wildcats will host their annual Alumni games Saturday at the Complex.

GridIron Club to meet tonight at 6pm

The Trigg County Football GridIron Club will meet tonight at 6pm at the high school little theater.  Everyone is invited to attend and support the football team.

Olivia Higgins playing in Babe Ruth Softball World Series

Olivia Higgins, daughter of former Trigg County High School football coach Curtis Higgins, is playing with the Fern Creek under 16 softball team in the Babe Ruth Softball World Series in Concord, New Hampshire.

Fern Creek is 2-0 after the first day of pool play, beating Concord, N.H. 1-0 and the Plantation Athletic Club of Los Angeles 4-0.  Higgins was 0-for-4 in the two games with a walk and a stolen base.

Fern Creek will finish pool play with two games tomorrow.

Trigg County finishes 8th at Tilghman Invitational

Trigg County finished 8th out of 17 teams Saturday at the Paducah Tilghman Invitational at Paxton Park.

Josh Lowe led Trigg with a 78, while Nick Choate added an 84, Trent Parrent an 86, Cole Gardner an 87, and Derek Rogers a 94.

Trigg County' s score of 335 was 31 shots behind the winner, Calloway County.  Caldwell County finished in 10th place with a score of 345.  Daniel Taylor and Andrew Knight each shot an 81 for the Tigers.

St. Mary's Sammy Thompson won the match with a 69, one shot better than Ballard Memorial's Chase Laster.

Meanwhile, Hopkinsville took fourth place at the Madisonville Invitational Saturday, 17 shots behind the winner Muhlenberg County.

Jordan Gary led Hoptown with a 78, followed by Conner Gates with an 80, Dallas Gates an 82, Lucas Bolinger a 90, and Dayton Jones a 94.

Hopkinsvile fielded a second team in the tourney, with Brendan Jones, Jack Gardner, and Robby Massie each shooting a 90.

Trigg County will play at Marshall County today, while Hopkinsville will host Hopkins County Central in a dual match at the country club.

Former Fort Campbell coach Mickey Fisher has died

Mickey Fisher, the longest tenured boys basketball coach in Fort Campbell history, died of an apparant heart attack last night. 

Fisher coached the Falcons from 1987-98, posting a record of 120-167.  His 1989-90 team posted a 16-6 record.  His teams won 10 or more games nine times in his 12 seasons as head coach.

Fisher's teams never advanced out of district play, having coached in one of the toughest districts in the state that included Christian County, Hopkinsville, and University Heights.

Fisher played basketball at Austin Peay State University from 1972-74 and was a teammate of James "Fly" Williams.  Williams talked about Fisher on his blog, TheFly35.com
