Hopkins County Central overcame a 19-point first half deficit to edge Trigg County 88-86 in overtime Friday night at Wildcat Gym. The Storm scored seven points in the final 37 seconds to steal the win from the Wildcats, who saw a three-game winning streak come to an end.
Trigg County hit eight 3-pointers in the first half and built a 38-19 lead with 1:59 left in the first half. Hopkins Central scored the final four points of the frame to trail 38-23 at halftime.
Hopkins Central got as close as six points in the third quarter but trailed 58-45 after three quarters.
However, the Storm began the fourth quarter on a 14-1 run to tie the game at 59. Trigg County committed three consecutive turnovers which the Storm converted into points at their end. Trigg had five turnovers in the fourth quarter and 15 for the game.
The largest lead for the remainder of regulation was a four-point Wildcat lead with four minutes left.
Jonathon King hit two free throws with 23 seconds left to give the Wildcats a 75-73 lead, but Hopkins Central responded with a layup by Daniel Croft with 14 seconds left to tie the game at 75. Trigg had one final look at the basket but King's shot in traffic was no good.
In the overtime, Trigg County took an 86-81 lead on a free throw by Dustin White with 41 seconds left. Hopkins Central answered with a 3-pointer by Jones with 37 seconds left and called a timeout to set up their press.
Trigg turned the ball over, and Cory Coble stole the pass, feeding Jones for another bucket to tie the game a 86 with 25 seconds left.
Trigg turned the ball over again as they crossed halfcourt, and Jevonte Hughes stole the ball and fed Jones for another bucket with 12 seconds left to give the Storm an 88-86 lead. Shelton Burress misfired on a 3-pointer with three seconds left, and the Storm prevailed.
Jones led Hopkins Central (15-5) with 37 points and eight rebounds. Hughes added 18 points.
High scorer for Trigg County was Jonathon King with 34 points and 10 rebounds. The senior was 6-of-10 on three-pointers but did not have a field goal attempt in the overtime as the Storm defense clamped down.
Dustin White added 25 points and 14 rebounds, and Burress added 16 points.
Hopkins Central outscored Trigg County 65-48 in the second half and overtime thanks to 26-of-40 shooting (65%) in the second half.
