Trigg County bounced back from the thumping suffered in the championship game of the KME Classic to post a 65-62 first round win over Herrin, Ill. in the first round of the Farmer's State Bank Marion Holiday Tournament Friday in Marion, Ill.
Jonathon King scored a game-high 38 points, including all 17 of Trigg County's fourth quarter points. Trigg led 47-46 after three quarters and 65-60 with about a minute left.
Trigg head coach Mike Wright said Herrin cut the lead to 65-62 with a pair of free throws. After Trigg took a bad shot, Herrin missed a shot that was rebounded by Zeke Wright. However, Wright was called for traveling with two seconds left. Herrin's last-second shot to tie the game was blocked by King.
Shelton Burress scored all 16 of his points in the first half, and Zeke Wright added seven points.
Alex Brown, a 6-8 junior, caused Trigg trouble all night in the paint, scoring 10 points and blocking nearly a dozen shots. David Mallow led Herrin (2-8) with 21 points, and Demeon Jones added 19 points.
"This was a big win for us," Wright said. "After playing poorly against Larue County, we needed to get a win like this, especially here in this tournament where we could come here and win all five games or lose all five."
Trigg County was the only Kentucky school to win in the first round of the tournament. Lake County improved to 10-0 with an 80-54 win over Union County, and Marion was an easy winner over St. Mary.
Trigg will play Lake County in the 7pm today.
