Saturday Morning Sports Report for August 16

My guests on the Saturday Morning Sports Report tomorrow are Trigg County football coach Shannon Burcham and Fort Campbell football coach Shawn Berner.

I will talk with Shannon about tonight's scrimmage with Marshall County and what they will look to get done in practice next week.

Coach Berner and myself will preview the 2008 season for the Falcons, who are defending their Class 2A state championship.

Trigg County to scrimmage Marshall County tonight

Trigg County will scrimmage Marshall County tonight at 6pm at Perdue Field.  The varsity will go first, followed by the JV team.

Trigg, University Heights tie in soccer scrimmage

Trigg County tied University Heights 1-1 in a boys' soccer scrimmage last night at the Complex.

John Reinick scored Trigg County's goal on a penalty kick.  UHA scored their lone goal off a deflection that scooted past Wildcat goalie Josh Green.

"It was a good night for us, and I am proud of the effort we gave," said Wildcat head coach Josh Nichols, who pointed out that UHA only lost two players off of last year's region runner up team and is picked by many to be the team to beat in the region.  UHA tied Madisonville in a scrimmage earlier in the week.

The JV game ended in a 2-2 tie as Jared Stallons and Zach Adams each scored a goal.

Trigg County opens their season Monday at home against Fort Campbell.

Trigg County beats Union County in girls soccer scrimmage

Trigg County beat Union County 4-0 in a girls' soccer scrimmage last night in Morganfield.

Danielle Romero scored the shut out in goal for the Lady Wildcats, who got two goals from Janada Acree and one goal each from Brooklyn Thomas and Taylor Davis.

Trigg will scrimmage at Heath Saturday at 2:30pm.

The Trigg JV team also won, picking up a 4-3 win.  Lauren Frazier had three goals for the Lady Wildcats.

Trigg County opens their 2008 season next Saturday at home against University Heights at the Complex.

Titans vs. Raiders tonight on WKDZ

The Tennessee Titans will host the Oakland Raiders tonight at LP Field in Nashville in preseason NFL action.

You can hear the game on WKDZ-FM beginning with the pregame show at 6pm.  Kickoff will be at 7pm.

Wildcats fall in Alumni scrimmage

Trigg County lost to a team of alumni in a soccer scrimmage Saturday, falling 4-1 at the Complex.

The Wildcat alumni scored three goals in the first 20 minutes of the game.  Nick Woodruff, Justin Cain, and Josh Luxmore scored the early goals for the Wildcats.

"We came out nervous, but played well for the final three quarters of the game," Wildcat head coach Josh Nichols.

Roman Cail assisted Jeremy Stamps on Trigg's lone goal of the game.  Josh Cain finished off the scoring for the alumni team.

"Losing by three goals is the closest we've been in the three alumni games," Nichols said.

Trigg County will host University Heights in a scrimmage tonight at 7:30pm at the Complex.

Bid on Titans skybox tickets today

WKDZ will be auctioning off Tennessee Titans skybox tickets today on the Live Afternoon Drive with Bill Booth.  The tickets are for Tennessee's Friday exhibition game with Oakland at LP Field.

Bids on the tickets will be taken between 3-4:50pm by calling 522-1212.

Proceeds from the auction will to towards next year's Cadiz Rotary Radio Auction.  Be sure to listen and bid on the tickets for a fantastic view of the Titans.

Trigg loses golf match by a single shot

Trigg County lost to Livingston Central in a quad golf match Tuesday by a single stroke.  Livingston Central shot a 173, while Trigg had a 174 at Boots Randolph Golf Course.  Crittenden County had a 185, and Caldwell County a 192.

Josh Lowe and Derek Rogers each had a 6-over 42.  Cole Garnder added a 43, while Nick Choate had a 47 and Shaun Sizemore a 49.

In the girls' match, Karli Bush had a 53, including a chip-in birdie.  Sierra Bush shot a 59, and Madison Cheney had a 61.

Trigg County will host Lyon County, Caldwell County, and UHA in a quad match tomorrow at Boots Randolph Golf Course.

Trigg County opened their season Aug. 5 with a dual match loss to Calloway County at the Murray Oaks Country Club.  Calloway had a 168 compared to Trigg's 181.

Josh Lowe led Trigg County with a 42, followed by Nick Choate (43), Derek Rogers (47), Cole Gardner (49), and Shaun Sizemore and Caleb Bush with a 50.

Trigg's girls were led by Karli Bush's 54.  Sierra Bush added a 58, and Madison Cheney had a 61.

Trigg to scrimmage UHA Thursday

Trigg County will host University Heights in a soccer scrimmage Thursday night at 7:30pm at the Complex.

During the game, they will be selling tickets for a chance to score a goal at halftime.  The guest goalie is Trigg A.D. Jim Perrin.  Score a goal and win $50 courtesy of Stallons Auto Sales.

Also, the soccer team will be having a car wash Saturday from 8am-2pm at Pennyrile Home Medical on Main Street to support the soccer team.

GridIron Club having Meet the Players Dinner Thursday

The Trigg County GridIron Club will be holding a Meet and Greet the Football Players Dinner Thursday in the school cafeteria at 6:00 p.m. It will be an Italian Dinner (Lasagna/Spaghetti, salad, drink and dessert) for $7.00.

You can purchase a plate at the door, and an auction will be held after the meal.

All of the proceeds go to the GridIron Club to support Trigg County Football.

It appears the ghost of Christmas Past is alive and circulating on the web.

If you're going to repost one of my blog entries on your web site, every journalism class I took in college taught me to cite your sources.  On here, you usually get a link to the story where I got the information from.  If there is no link, it means the information was sent to me directly or I got the information from good old fashioned reporting.  Or it is my opinion.

We've done been down the copying and pasting road before.  I have no problem posting another story that details the athletic exploits of Willie Wilson, Skip Pisa, Jane Ellen Wilson, or Rodney Cheatham.  And I hope it ends up on your website just as the last one appeared in a local newspaper.  I think we all remember how that turned out.

Cite your sources.  And remember the copyright law does apply to blogs.

Former Miss Basketball Arnika Brown arrested

Arnika Brown, a former Miss Basketball and 2008 Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year, has been arrested in Hopkinsville for possessing counterfeit money, according to the Hopkinsville Police Department.

According to WKDZ Radio News, Brown is charged with 11 counts of First-Degree Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument (all felonies) and five counts of Theft by Deception under $300 (all misdemeanors).

Hopkinsville Police arrested Brown Saturday night following an investigation of counterfeit money being passed at several Hopkinsville businesses.  According to the arrest report, Brown said she had been with another person at several locations, passing the fake bills to make the purchases.  The report did not state when the incidents occurred.  The arrest report also stated Brown admitted to having five fake $100 bills but had thrown them away.

The report did not state which businesses were involved or what types of merchandise were purchased.  On the arrest citation, it listed Brown's occupation as a Western Kentucky University student.

Hopkinsville police expect to make another arrest in the case.  Brown was lodged in the Christian County Jail on a $114,000 surety bond.

Brown was named Miss Basketball in 2006 and was given a scholarship to the University of Kentucky.  However, she left before school began that fall.  She enrolled at St. Catherine's College but left before playing a game.

She enrolled at Western Kentucky University last year and was named the Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year after averaging 10 points and seven rebounds for the Lady Toppers.

Trigg volleyball match on Tuesday cancelled

Trigg County's season opener Tuesday with Muhlenberg North has been cancelled and will not be rescheduled, according to Wildcat A.D. Jim Perrin.

He said Muhlenberg North cited fuel issues and the need to schedule another district game for the cancellation.

The Lady Wildcats will open their season next Monday at Mayfield.

Brooke Bailey is now a Predators Dancer

After three years as a Tennessee Titans cheerleader, Brooke Bailey has moved across town and will be a member of the Nashville Predators' Dance Team this fall.

Brooke tried out in June and was one of 16 dancers chosen from a pool of over 60 that tried out.

Calling it "a good change of pace," Brooke will take part in a swimsuit calendar shoot in Destin, Florida this month in one of her first team functions.

Brooke is a former Cadiz resident and graduate of University Heights Academy.

One of the best Olympic commercials on TV

One of the best TV commericials airing during the Beijing Olympics is the Nike commercial that intertwines the U.S. men's basketball team and footage of Marvin Gaye singing the National Anthem at the 1983 NBA All-Star Game. 

Marvin was tragically shot and killed by his father during an arguement a little over a year after his rendition of the Star Spangled Banner.

Alabama A&M interested in Curtis Pulley

You can add Alabama A&M to the list of schools interested in former Kentucky quarterback Curtis Pulley.

Coach Anthony Jones told the Huntsville Times "Anytime you've got an outstanding student-athlete out there you want to look into what the situation is and that's exactly what we're going to do."

Pulley took a visit to Eastern Kentucky earlier this week, but his father said the Colonels were no longer an option.

Soccer scrimmage Saturday

The Trigg County boys' soccer team will be scrimmaging a team of local former players Saturday at 7:00 P.M. at the Trigg County Recreation Complex.

Curtis Pulley will not attend Eastern Kentucky

Curtis Pulley will not attend Eastern Kentucky University, according to Kentucky Sports.com

It's obvious that a 1-AA school will be his destination so that he can play immediately.  Schools such as Murray State, Austin Peay, and Tennessee State have been mentioned along with EKU.

This week's Saturday Morning Sports Report

Joe Wilson, sports editor of the Kentucky New Era, will be one of my guests on the Saturday Morning Sports Report this week.  We will discuss the recent dismissal of Curtis Pulley from the Kentucky football team as well as the upcoming fall high school sports season.

Also on the show will be Mediacom's Dale Haney (Director of Area Operations) and Randy Hollis (Regional Government Relations Manager).  They will be making a major annoucement that Trigg County Wildcat football fans won't want to miss. The Mediacom guys called me and said they were unable to do the show this week.  We will have them on next week for the interview.

The show airs each Saturday at 8:10am on WKDZ-FM.

Scheduling tidbits for 2009

I know the 2008 football season hasn't started yet, but high school coaches are busy making their schedules for 2009-10.

At this week's Trigg County picture day, Wildcat head coach Shannon Burcham said they only have two weeks next year to fill -- the opening week and week #10.

Trigg County has opted out of next year's bowl game at Hopkinsville and could fill that slot with the Alliance Bowl at Graves County.  Trigg would play Graves County one year and Mayfield the other.  The Wildcats last played Mayfield in the 2004 Integra Bowl, snapping a long losing streak to the Cardinals with the 41-27 win.

Burcham said the tenth week also needs to be filled, with Fort Campbell to be dropped from the schedule.  He said Fulton County, Hopkins County Central, and Ballard Memorial could be added next year.  He also said both Calloway County and Hopkinsville have agreed to return to the Wildcat Chevrolet Bowl next year.  Marshall County, who will make their second appearance this year, has not given Trigg an answer on whether they will return.

Trigg will also see their district rotation change slightly, opening with Caldwell County and Murray in consecutive weeks.

Burcham said nothing is final and many contracts have yet to be signed, but he said he can't see the teams changing much.

Meanwhile, Fort Campbell has added Hopkinsville in the week #10 slot vacated by Trigg County.  A Hopkinsville coach also told that Russellville has been added to Hopkinsville's schedule.  Those two local schools have to be a welcome sight to Hoptown's bus drivers on game nights, given their recent trips to Fort Thomas, Lincoln County, and Mercer County.

The Paducah Sun's Joey Fosko said on his blog that Paducah Tilghman and Fort Campbell have agreed to play again through at least 2010.

9-10 All-Stars take second place at Hanson tourney

The Trigg County 9-10 year-old All-Star baseball team took second place last week in a tournament in Hanson.

Trigg played four games on Saturday, losing to Henderson County 10-4 in the championship game.  Brandon Schafer had a double for Trigg, while Ethan Dossett, Zack Colbert, Reid Kuberski, and Brandon Wilson each had singles.

In pool play, Trigg beat Henderson County 14-1 and beat Dawson Springs 12-3.

On Friday, they lost to Webster County 11-10 in eight innings.  Will Allen, Matt Skinner, Colbert, Schafer, and Dossett each had hits for Trigg.

Trigg beat Dawson Springs again on Saturday by an 11-1 score.  Schafer, Skinner, Kuberski, Colbert, and Wilson each had doubles for Trigg County.

Trigg bounced back for a 16-6 win over Webster County as Schafer had two hits for Trigg.

Trigg advanced to the championship game with a 15-5 win over Madisonville.  Jackson Vinson walked three times, and Matt Skinner, Reid Kuberski, Will Allen, Brandon Wilson, and Tyreke Wilson each ahd doubles.

The All-Stars are coached by Kevin Allen, Tommy Allen, Kevin Terrell, and Perry Alexander.

Curtis Pulley dismissed from UK football team

Curtis Pulley has been dismissed from the University of Kentucky football team for a "violation of team rules," according to Wildcat head coach Rich Brooks.

Pulley joins a list of players from Hopkinsville who have attended Kentucky to play football and been dismissed from the team.

Trigg County #10 in the Bluegrasspreps.com preaseason football poll; Fort Campbell #1

Bluegrasspreps.com has released their seventh annual preseason Kentucky high school football rankings, with three of the six defending champions grabbing top spots in the first poll.  Two of the other three defending state champs are ranked second in their respective polls.

Fort Campbell is ranked #1 in Class 2A, while Trigg County is ranked #10. 

The high school sports information web site ranked every team in every class.  Other district teams were Caldwell County (#11), Murray (#16), Heath (#19), and Reidland (#33).

Following Fort Campbell atop the Class 2A poll are Danville in second, followed by Newport Central Catholic, Prestonsburg, and Green County rounds out the top five.  Six through 10 are Owensboro Catholic, Corbin, DeSales, Bardstown, and Trigg in 10th.

In Class 5A, Christian County is ranked fifth and Hopkinsville 14th in the preseason poll.  Defending state champion Highlands returns to the top spot, followed by Covington Catholic, John Hardin, Bowling Green, and the Colonels in the top five.

Among the other teams on the Trigg County football schedule, Calloway County is ranked 9th in the Class 4A poll, and Hopkins County Central is 11th.    Fulton County is ranked 28th in Class 1A.

Kentucky has announced their 2008-09 basketball schedule and it looks to be a bit tougher than last year

    

Thomas-Bridges golf scramble attracts 17 teams

The team of Dennis Eggers, Rip Kirby, Barry Littlejohn, and Bill Hatler won the Thomas-Bridges golf scramble Friday with a score of 14-under, which included seven birdies on the back nine and an eagle of the par-5, 518-yard tenth hole at Boots Randolph Golf Course.  68 golfers turned out to help raise money for the TBA scholarship program.

Nick Choate finishes fourth at Jr. Golf Tourney

Nick Choate of Cadiz finished fourth at the Pepsi Junior Golf Tournament of Champions Thursday at the Canewood Golf Club in Georgetown.

Choate shot a first round 34 in the 11 and 12-year-old division, and followed it with a 41 on Thursday to finish seven shots behind Zach Smith of Mount Sterling.

Choate is tied for 14th in the Pepsi standings for his division despite playing a limited schedule.

GridIron Club to meet Monday

The Trigg County GridIron Club will meet Monday at the Trigg County Farm Bureau Building at 6:30pm.  All football parents and supporters are urged to attend.

Also, the new Trigg County football hats and visors are available in black or white.  See a club member or football coach to get yours today.

The football players are also selling cases of Coca Cola products, as a fundraiser, to pay for their football camp. Orders will be taken until August 12 and drinks will be delivered on August 25.  See any football player to support this fundraiser.

Trigg cross country to have meeting

Prospective runners for the 2008 Trigg County cross country teams need to meet at the high school gym today at 3:15pm for an informational meeting with Wildcat head coach Mike Wright.
