Trigg County's Ben Koenig will skip this week's Kentucky East/West All-Star football game in Louisville because he has enrolled in classes at Southern Illinois University.
Wildcat head coach Shannon Burcham said Koenig begins summer classes today and will get a head start on his course work and get acclimated to college.
Koenig is expected to compete on the offensive line for the Saluki football team this fall.
His decision to enroll in summer courses is one of the reasons why Tennessee opted out of their annual all-star game series with Kentucky this year. In recent years, many of the Volunteer State standouts have opted to miss the all-star game and head off to college early. For some players, it was mandatory they report early.
As a result, this year's all-star game will feature Kentucky's West All-Stars vs. the East All-Stars.
Players expected to play for the West All-Stars include Fort Campbell's Dexter Durrante, Josh McWherter, and Zack Rhinestine and Christian County's P.J. Hernandez and Ramone White.
I'll have more about the all-star game as the week goes on.
