It's official: Derrick Jasper leaving Kentucky

The long-rumored departure of Derrick Jasper from the University of Kentucky was made official today.

Several reasons, including homesickness and a desire to play closer to home, have been cited as reasons for Jasper to leave the UK basketball program.

Jasper averaged 4.2 points and 5.5 rebounds during an injury-plagued sophomore season.  His departure creates a gaping hole at the point guard position.

Possible destinations for Jasper include UNLV, Cal, and UCLA.

Graham Futrell: Pee Wee Homer

Once upon a time, I remember The Cadiz Record used to run a picture of the home run champ at the Pee Wee League and Little League level.  That was before my time there. 

The first home run I remember seeing hit in person on the little league field was by Al Baker.  He parked one into the trees in centerfield.  I think the trees are still there today.

The first softball home run I remember seeing hit was by Tony Holland, which came several years before the famous collision and subsequent brawl at home plate with the late Fred DeLoach.

There hasn't been too many Pee Wee League (over the fence) homers in recent years, but 7-year-old Graham Futrell of the Yankees smacked a homer in a game last week.

Congrats to Graham, the son of Stacey and Janay Futrell.  He now has tied me for career, all-time homers hit at the Complex.  One.  And he still has his best baseball in front of him.

Sutherland finishes tied for 15th at D-III championship

Bradley Sutherland finished tied for 15th at the NCAA Division III Golf Championships in Braselton, Georgia Friday.  The junior from Transylvania shot a 7-over 78 to finish at 16-over par -- 15 shots behind the winner.

As a team, Transy finished in 11th place, 42 shots behind the winner St. Johns (Minnesota).

Sutherland's round included seven bogeys and 11 pars on the Chateau Course at the Chateau Elan Golf Club.  He was 11 shots better than teammate Corey Maggard.

Trigg County 11 Muhlenberg South 5

Trigg County scored in bunches as they beat Muhlenberg South 11-5 Friday in Greenville.

The Wildcats scored three times in the second inning, four times in the fifth, and three more times in the sixth inning.  They had 12 hits in the game.

"We played a good defensive game, and hit well in situations," Wildcat head coach Jackie Sholar.  "We played a complete game, and that was good to see with the district tournament next week."

Will Stagner had two doubles and two singles on his way to driving in three runs.  Shane Banks added three singles and two RBIs, and Mitch Rogers had two hits for the Wildcats, who improve to 13-15 on the season.

Stagner also picked up the win on the mound.

Skip Pisa and Willie Wilson did not play Friday.

The Wildcats return to action today at Marshall County in a 3pm game in Draffenville.

Is Kentucky getting a transfer?

Rumor on the internet is that Matthew Pilgram, a 6-8, 225 pound freshman at Hampton University, is considering transferring to Kentucky.

Pilgram, who is from Cincinnati, could give the Wildcats a physical presence in the paint to go alongside Patrick Patterson.

Bradley Sutherland in the top 10 heading into final day

Transylvania golfer Bradley Sutherland remains in the top 10 of the NCAA Division III Golf Championships near Atlanta.

Sutherland shot a 3-over par 74 on the Chateau Course Thursday, which puts him in a tie for ninth place at nine shots over par.  He is 12 shots behind the leader, Scott Harris of St. John Fisher College.

Suthlerland had another consistent round Thursday, with a birdie and two bogeys in the first 16 holes.  He carded a double-bogey on the 17th hole and finished with a par on the 18th for a 3-over 74.

He is scheduled to tee off at 12:40pm (ET) on the Chateau Course at the Chateau Elan Course in Braselton, Georgia.  Sutherland has shot a combined 3-over par in two previous rounds on the 7,030 yard Chateau Course.

As a team, Transylvania is in 11th place, some 30 shots behind St. John Fisher College.  However, four teams are just 12 shots ahead of Transy in the top 10.

Today's games cancelled

Trigg County's games today have been cancelled because of the rain.

The Wildcat baseball team was scheduled to host Hopkins County Central.  Their next game is at Muhlenberg South Friday.  They will play at Marshall County Saturday.

Today's softball game at Mayfield has also been cancelled.  In fact, Trigg County's Friday game at Caldwell County has been cancelled because of Caldwell County's graduation, also scheduled for Friday.

Saturday's home game with University Heights, which was originally scheduled to be aired on Boomer Radio, has also been cancelled.

Game recaps will appear next week.

The next Trigg County softball game will be Monday against Lyon County in the Fifth District Softball Tournament at Lyon County.

Antonio Grubbs getting some statewide recognition

Trigg County senior to be Antonio Grubbs is getting some statewide recognition, thanks to Jody Demling of the Louisville Courier-Journal.

Demling, who writes a sports blog devoted to college recruiting, lists Grubbs as one of the state's top football prospects in 2008-09.

Contrary to what you may have read, I still work at WKDZ

Contrary to some published reports, I am not working at The Cadiz Record. 

However, you couldn't tell by reading today's Cadiz Record story about the ArrowCats at the national archery competition as opposed to my blog entry from Monday.

Or by reading last week's paper.  Or the week before. 

Don't bother calling it a 'staff report'.  Just use my name.  Or pay me.

Did you know that in 1978, the copyright law changed and did away with the requirement for copyright notice. This means that any piece of work that is published (whether be it written or or in digital media, such as my blog) automatically gets copyright protection, whether I post a notice or not.

For me, that's good information to have.

Games that never happened

For those of you who read the blog on a regular basis, you may have noticed some odd postings from game recaps from the weekend.

I was testing a new feature of the blog that allows stories to rotate as the appear on the front page.  It required me to make some posts to check it out.  I figured I would have some fun with it and concocted a few recaps of games that didn't exist.  That way, it would be easy to pick out which ones to delete if the feature didn't work.

In short, I wasn't able to get the feature to work and the stories stayed on the blog for a few hours.  The recaps dealt with Trigg losing a game and pitching a no-hitter against Owensboro.  As you can read below, you can see that didn't happen.

There was also a recap about Donald Bush hitting three home runs against Union County.  That also didn't happen, although he did have an unassisted triple play.

I included a game recap with a game that really didn't happen.  Trigg County beating Muhlenberg North 15-11 didn't happen.  The game was never played.

Keen eyes to the blog may also be able to pick out a few names from the past, such as former Trigg County High School principal Skip Pisa, former WKDZ General Manager Willie Wilson, and Gary Kidd, who was the owner of WKDZ when I began work here in 1988.  Joey Randolph, former sports editor of the Princeton Times-Leader, also got a mention in one of my stories for the blog.

Like I said, I had to post some "ghost" stories while working to see if the rotating feature worked.  The entries no longer appear as they had a shelf life of 12 hours.

I just hope you don't read about Skip Pisa's record, or Willie Wilson scoring a run for Union County anywhere else.  Because, as you now know, the information is false.  After all, one of the first things taught in Journalism class is doublecheck your facts and cite your sources.  I don't remember copy and paste from my time at Murray State University.

Surely you won't read elsewhere about a game that was never played.  You think?

Sutherland tied for 44th after first day at D-III Golf Championship

Transylvania University golfer Bradley Sutherland is tied for 44th place after the first day of the NCAA Division III Golf Championship in Atlanta.

Sutherland shot a 6-over 77 on the par-71 Woodlands Course.  He began the round with eight straight pars before a bogey on nine gave him a front nine score of 37.  Three bogeys and a double-bogey on the back nine gave him a score of 40.

Sutherland's round was the best for a Transy player and helped the Pioneers rank 19th of 35 teams after the first day.  They need to finish in the top 25 today in order to make he cut for the third round.

The Pioneers are a collective 28 shots behind the leader, LaVergne University.

Trigg County 15 Dawson Springs 2

Trigg County scored eight runs in the third inning and no less than two in the other three as they pounded Dawson Springs 15-2 Monday at the Complex. 

It was Senior Night for the Wildcats, who honored Tyler Greenman and Jamey Guinn in pregame festivities.

Guinn then went out and had a double and two RBIs and picked up the pitching win by scattering three hits over five innings and struck out six.

Greenman and R.J. Sholar also had a double and two RBIs, and Mitch Rogers had an RBI double as seven different Wildcats had at least one hit.  They also took advantage of seven walks issued by Panther pitchers.

Trigg County improved to 12-15 with the win and will play at Hopkins County Central Thursday.

Patsy Banister wins national archery tournament

Trigg County sixth grader Patsy Banister (right) won the elementary division of the National Archery in Schools Program's national competition Saturday in Louisville.

She bested 390 other entrants with a score of 285, including 18 in the center target, known as "10s".  It was six shots better than second place Mallory Spring of Maysville (Ohio) Elementary School.

Banister is the second straight Trigg female to win at the national level.  Amber Abate won the middle school division last year.

Shaye Patterson (bottom right) finished fifth with a score of 274, while Emily Holder (272) was seventh, Shateanna Stewart (270) was 10th, Kelsey Miller (262) was 24th, Kaila Cunningham (261) was 25th, and Kayla Bingham (260) was 31st.

For the guys, Jake McNab finished 13th with a score of 275, which was 14 points behind the winner, Mitchell Monforton of Grandview (MN) Middle School.

Brandon Schaffer was 55th with a score of 260.

Those scores helped Trigg County finish second in the elementary division with a score of 3,171 -- just seven points behind Meigs Intermediate School of Middleport, Ohio.  Maysville Elementary School of Zanesville, Ohio was third with 3,096 points.

In the Middle School Division, Sloane Patterson finished sixth with a score of 279, including 15 "10s".  That score was 11 points behind the winner, Meaghann Dunn of Stuart Pepper Middle in Meade County.

Katie Coons finished 21st with a score of 272 and Ellen Shipley was 22nd with an identical score of 272.  Hannah Cross (260) finished 53rd and Amanda Fowler (260) was 55th.

For the guys, Matt Brokering finished 24th with a score of 278 that included 15 "10s".  Landon Sumner was 32nd (277); and D.J. Wilson was 46th with a score of 273.

Trigg County Middle School finished in fourth place overall.  Henderson South Middle School won with a score of 3,334 -- just four points better than Stuart Pepper Middle School from Meade County.

At the High School Division, Taylor Davis led Trigg County with a seventh place finish.  Her score of 285 included 18 "10s" and was 11 points behind the winner, Courtney Campbell of Meade County.

Danielle Reddick finished eighth with a score of 281.  Haley Thomas (279) finished 11th; while Atalya Ayala (278) was 17th; Jennifer Hyde (274) was 25th; and Emily Shipley (265) was 58th.

In the Male Division, Timmy Blakeley was 34th with a score of 283, followed by Grady Cofield in 38th with a score of 282; and Shawn Sizemore in 76th with a score of 276.

Those scores helped the high school finish third with a total score of 3,331.  Henderson County Middle School won with a total of 3,354, and Maysville (Ohio) Middle was second with a total score of 3,347.

Todd County 9 Trigg County 1

Todd County Central scored in every inning on their way to a 9-1 win over Trigg County Saturday at the Todd County Round Robin in Elkton.

Ray Ann Moore had a double for the Lady Rebels, who won the event to improve their record to 12-9.

Hanna Oliver and Samantha Furr each had hits for the Lady Wildcats, who fell to 2-20 on the season.

The Lady Wildcats are scheduled to play at Dawson Springs Tuesday.

University Heights 11 Trigg County 0

University Heights scored seven times in the fifth inning to blank Trigg County for the second time in a week 11-0.  The game was part of the Todd County Central round robin Saturday in Elkton.

Kalesha Williams had two singles, and Elizabeth Torian added another hit off UHA pitcher Katelyn Lewis, who struck out nine and walked one in five innings.

Sara Allen, Elizabeth Atwood, and McKenzie Hamby each had two hits as part of the 10-hit Lady Blazer attack.

UHA improved to 8-15 with the win.

Metcalfe County 7 Trigg County 1

Trigg County lost the first of three games Saturday at Todd County Central round-robin, falling to Metcalfe County 7-1.

The Lady Wildcats were held to four hits on the afternoon.

Metcalfe County improved to 10-17 with the win.

Trigg County loses doubleheader

Trigg County lost a doubleheader Saturday, losing both games at Union County.

Trigg lost to Union County 6-5 in the first game and 14-0 to Owensboro in the second game.

The loss to Union County overshadowed an unassisted triple play turned by Wildcat shortstop Donald Bush, who caught a line drive, tagged the runner before he got back to second base, and applied the tag to the runner from first base who was running on the pitch.

Trigg County scored three times in the seventh inning to tie the game at 5-5.  Bush had an RBI double, and Jamey Guinn followed with an RBI single to force the tie.

Union County (11-16) scored their winning run in the bottom of the seventh after two were out.  Two errors and two singles plated the winning run for the Braves.

Trigg outhit Union 12-7 but committed four errors on the day.

R.J. Sholar had two singles and a double, while Guinn, Bush, and Mitch Rogers each had two hits for the Wildcats.

Will Stagner took the loss on the mound for the Wildcats.

In the second game, also played at Union County, Owensboro scored six times in the first inning and six more in the fourth to win 14-0.

"It just wasn't a good day for us.  We're going backward instead of forward," said Wildcat head coach Jackie Sholar.  "Our defense is killing us right now.  We've been working on it, but it just hasn't been coming around."

Trigg had four more errors against Owensboro after a four-error output earlier in the day against Union County.

The Wildcats were held to three hits on the afternoon -- singles by Mitch Rogers, Donald Bush, and R.J. Sholar.

The Wildcats fell to 11-15 with the loss and will host Dawson Springs for Senior Night Monday at the Complex.

Lone Oak 19 Trigg County 0

Senior Day didn't go as scripted for the Lady Wildcats, who lost to Lone Oak 19-0 in three innings Friday at the Complex.

The Lady Flash scored four runs in the first inning, 13 more in the second, and two in the third to get all of the runs they would need.

Lone Oak pitcher Kayla Robertson allowed just one hit and struck out six in the game.

Kara Canter had a triple for Lone Oak (13-16).

Trigg County was to be in action today at Todd County Central.

Second grader commits to Kentucky

Just days after receiving a verbal commitment from California eighth grader Michael Avery, Billy Gillispie has received his first commitment from the class of 2018 today as 7-year-old Darrin Brown has announced he will play basketball at the University of Kentucky once he completes elementary school, middle school, and high school (in that order) at Trigg County.

Brown (at right) led his Upward basketball team in scoring, shots, assists, and Little Debbie snacks eaten after each game.  He was also first in the postgame hand shake line more often that any other player.  He also carries a high GPA, having made a 100 on his spelling test this week and a 95 on his units test.

Darrin's twin brother Micah (seen dunking below) has announced that he will wait until middle school before he commits to a college.

"Why commit so early?" he said.  "I've got plenty of time before middle school."

Darrin is the first known commitment to Kentucky's Class of 2018.  And no, he has not received any offer from Gillispie or UK.

Christian County 9 Marshall County 8

We were supposed to carry the Trigg County/UHA baseball game on the radio today, but Mother Nature had other ideas.  Instead, we moved a couple of blocks down the street to carry the Christian County/Marshall County game.  And are we glad we did.

Josh Hilling singled home Matt Reed with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to cap off a wild finish and send Christian County past Marshall County 9-8.

The Colonels entered the seventh inning down 8-2.  They scored seven runs on four hits and were walked five times in the final inning.  The Colonels scored eight times in their last at bat Tuesday in a 12-6 win over Trigg County and scored seven more times in their final at bat today.

Daron Morris hit a sac fly in the seventh to begin the comeback.  The senior had two hits and two RBIs on the day.  Matt Reed drove in two with a single, and P.C. Holmes scored Jake Glass on a ground out to tie the game.  After Cole Isom drew a walk, Hilling singled to center to score Reed with the game-winner.

Hilling pitched three innings of relief to pick up the win on the mound.  He allowed one hit and one run.

Jordan Williams had three of Christian County's 10 hits.

Tyler O'Daniel and Cody Forsythe each had two hits for Marshall County, who fell to 20-3 with the loss.

Christian County improves to 19-9 with the wild win.

Trigg games cancelled

Trigg County's Thursday games were cancelled due to wet playing conditions.  The baseball team was scheduled to play at UHA, while the softball team was scheduled to host Crittenden County.  No word has been received on when or if the games will be made up.

District baseball draw to be held today

The Fifth District Baseball meeting will be held today with the top priority to determine the seeding and dates for the postseason tournament.

Trigg County, Livingston Central, and Crittenden County are all tied atop the standings with a 4-2 record.  Lyon County is 0-6 and will be the #4 seed.

Because the top three teams all swept each other during the season, a coin toss will be used to determine the top three seeds.

The tournament will get underway in less than two weeks at Lyon County High School.

Christian County 12 Trigg County 6

Christian County scored eight times in the ninth inning to beat Trigg County and the rain 12-6 Tuesday night at the Complex.

The Colonels scored three times in the sixth inning to tie the game at 4-4.  Trigg had runners at first and second with one out in the seventh but couldn't push across a run.

Will Stagner doubled home Mitch Rogers with Trigg County's first run in the first inning. 

Daron Morris hit a sacrifice fly in the third for the Colonels to tie the game at 1-1.

Josh Green tripled home Shane Banks in the fourth inning, and Tyler Greenman followed with an RBI single to give the Wildcats a 3-1 lead.  Banks added an RBI single in the fifth to put Trigg up 4-1.

After managing just two hits through the first five innings, Christian County's bats awoke in the sixth inning.  Jordan Williams doubled home two runs and then scored on a double by Morris to tie the game at 4-4.

Trigg's defense fell apart in the ninth inning.  The Colonels scored eight times on five hits and three Trigg errors.  Morris had a two-run triple to key the comeback.

In all, only two of Christian County's 12 runs were earned thanks to four costly Wildcat errors.

Tyler Gilliland pitched 2/3 of an inning in relief of Dylan Carroll to pick up the win for the Colonels (18-9).

Donald Bush pitched six and a third innings of relief and was tagged with the loss.

Stagner had three hits and an RBI for the Wildcats, while Green, Rogers, and Banks each had two hits.

Morris had three hits and four RBIs for the Colonels.

Trigg County falls to 11-13 and will play at UHA Thursday.

Bradley Sutherland named conference player of the year

Transylvania golfer Bradley Sutherland has been named Heartland Conference Golfer of the Year after the junior won the conference tournament last week by 10 shots.

The Trigg County High graduate shot a 297 to help his team win the conference title and qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships next week in Atlanta.

Transy head coach Brian Lane was also named the conference coach of the year.

"Bradley has certainly been our most consistent player. His play in this year’s conference tournament, with the very windy conditions, was exceptional," Lane said.  "He was the only player in the field to break the 300 stroke mark.  We are extremely proud of Bradley and his accomplishments this year. He has shown that he can compete against the best golfers in the country in the NCAA Division I, II and III."

It was the second straight conference title for the Pioneers, who now qualify for the D-3 championships next week which will be hosted by Emory College.  The tournament will be held May 13-16 at the Chateau Elan Resort near Atlanta. The nation's top 35 teams and five individuals will compete in the event.

Last year, Sutherland finished 11th in the national championships and earned second-team All-American honors.

Posts reporting slow? Here's why

If you feel like the blog has been lagging behind, you're not wrong.  For some reasons, the posts have been slow to post to the site.  In some cases, more than 24 hours slow.

I think we have the issue solved and hopefully everything will return to normal this week.

Caldwell County 12 Trigg County 2

Trigg County's April swoon has carried over into May as the Wildcats were beaten 12-2 Monday at the Princeton VFW Park.  The loss was Trigg's sixth in their last nine games and dropped their record to 11-12 on the season.

Caldwell scored five runs in the third inning, four in the fifth, and three more in the sixth inning to end it.  However, Wildcat head coach Jackie Sholar wasn't around to see the final seven runs scored by the Tigers.

Sholar was ejected in the fourth inning for arguing a pickoff play at third base when he felt like the Wildcats made the play and should have been rewarded with the out call.

"It was the first time I had been kicked out of a game since Little League," Sholar said.  As a result of the ejection, he will not be allowed to coach Trigg's game with Christian County today.

Trigg took a 1-0 lead when Jamey Guinn's fielder's choice grounder scored Donald Bush.  Trigg added a run in the third inning when Guinn singled home Mitch Rogers.  Then Caldwell began their onslaught.

Jake Pepper had three hits for Caldwell County and picked up the win on the mound, giving up seven hits in six innings.  He didn't walk anyone and he didn't register a strikeout.

Donald Bush had two of Trigg County's seven hits.

Ben Dillingham hit a solo home run for the Tigers, who improve to 11-9 on the season.

Trigg County will host Christian County today at the Complex in a 5:30pm contest.

Christian County (17-9) was one-hit in a 7-0 loss to Marshall County Monday.

Trigg County 19 Fulton County 3

After scoring 19 runs in their previous 11 games, Trigg County busted out the whuppin' stick and scored 19 runs in their six-inning win at Fulton County Monday.

The win snapped a 10-game losing streak and the 19 runs were the most scored by Trigg since a 19-1 win over Crittenden County in 2005.

"We really needed this one," Lady Wildcat head coach Scott Hill said.  "We just really hit the ball well."

Trigg County pounded out 26 hits in the game, scoring six runs in the fifth inning and eight more in the sixth before the mercy rule kicked in.

Senior catcher Kalesha Williams had five hits for the Lady Wildcats -- three doubles and two singles.  She scored four runs.

Samantha Furr had four hits for the Lady Wildcats -- two doubles, a triple, and a single.  She also scored three runs.

Hanna Oliver also had four hits for the Lady Wildcats, while Elizabeth Torian had three hits.  Getting two hits were Sierra Bush (2 1B), Keisha Stewart (2B, 3B), Shaniqua Smithers (2 1B), and Karlie Stewart (2 1B).

Dakota Littlejohn picked up the win in relief for the Lady Wildcats, who are now 2-15 on the season.

Trigg will play at University Heights Tuesday, looking to avenge Saturday's 3-2 loss in the Lady Blazer Invitational.

"We'll be looking for some revenge.  You can count on that," Hill said.

Fulton County fell to 0-13 with the loss.

Who's ready for some Sunday baseball?

Rain and horses caused Trigg County to move their district baseball game with Lyon County to Sunday afternoon at the Complex.

Trigg County held on for a wild win, 13-12.  And a lot of fans of both teams got to see the game.

The Sunday afternoon game (2pm start) brought out a lot of fans from both schools.  Fans who maybe have to work during the week and can't make a weekday game.  Or maybe it was just fans who wanted to enjoy the nice weather and support their school.

Regardless, it was one of the biggest gates of the year.  And the atmosphere didn't go unnoticed by Wildcat head coach Jackie Sholar.

"I liked playing the Sunday afternoon game.  Our fans knew about it on short notice, and we still had a lot of people there," he said, adding "I'd like to schedule one or two Sunday games next year."

Of course, it would have to be a school from an adjacent county so that church attendance wouldn't be an issue.  But a 2pm start for a baseball game would allow schools such as Caldwell County or Hopkinsville to attend church, drive to Cadiz or Trigg fans drive there, and still arrive in plenty of time for a 2pm start.

It also allows people to return home in time to attend night services.

I've always been an advocate of sporting events being played on a weekend afternoon.  I would love to see the Trigg football program schedule one Saturday afternoon football game a year.  It would allow those fans who work during the week or work on Friday nights a chance to support their school.

It also gives a slight college atmosphere to a high school game.  I've attended Saturday afternoon football games at small colleges such as Campbellsville and Centre and the atmosphere rivals anything you'd find on a Friday night.

You could have a Saturday afternoon homecoming.  Are people from a long way away more apt to drive Friday evening for a game instead of using Friday night to drive and then attend the Saturday afternoon game rested and ready?

Here's hoping we see some Saturday afternoon football and Sunday afternoon baseball in the near future.

Trigg County 13 Lyon County 12

Trigg County held off a late Lyon County rally to beat the Lyons 13-12 Sunday afternoon in a Fifth District game at the Complex.

Trigg scored in every inning and led 13-7 heading into the final frame before the Lyons rallied for five runs in the seventh.  They had the tying run at first base when Donald Bush induced the final out of the game to pick up the save.

Mitch Rogers was 5-for-5 at the plate, continuing his hot streak on offense.  He had four singles and a double and scored five runs.

Will Stagner had four hits, including two doubles, and drove in five runs.  Jamey Guinn added three hits and two RBIs, and Josh Green also had two hits and an RBI for the Wildcats, who had 19 hits on the afternoon.

The teams combined for 25 runs, 34 hits, and 11 errors.

Hunter Smilie picked up the pitching win for the Wildcats, who improved to 11-11 overall and 4-2 in the district.

Lyon County fell to 5-11 overall and 0-6 in district play.  Three of their six losses were by two runs or less.

Lady Wildcats drop three in UHA Lady Blazer Invitational

Playing softball 10 hours after Prom usually doesn't translate into positive results.

That was the case for Trigg County, who dropped three games in the UHA Lady Blazer Invitational Saturday.

However, they did give eventual tournament champion UHA their closest game, falling 3-2.  Trigg scored a run in the top of the seventh and threatened before the Lady Blazers closed out the game.

The Lady Wildcats lost to Russellville 15-0 and to McLean County 14-1 in the other two games.

"When everyone was alert and awake, we played well," said Lady Wildcat head coach Scott Hill, commenting on the early start Saturday following the school's Prom the night before.  "We had some players not make the trip, and we had to play some of our JV players."

The Lady Wildcats fall to 1-15 on the season and will play at Fulton County Monday.

Trigg County's baseball game with Lyon County, originally scheduled for today, will be played Sunday at 2pm at the Complex.

Livingston Central 14 Trigg County 2

Trigg County's hopes of claiming the top seed in the Fifth District Baseball Tournament was shattered by Livingston Central, who thumped the Wildcats 14-2 Thursday at the Complex.

The left side of the Trigg infield committed 10 errors, according to Wildcat head coach Jackie Sholar, who said it led to six unearned runs by the Cardinals.

After scoring a single run in the first inning, Livingston scored three runs in the second, third, and fourth innings, and four more in the fifth to get the win.

Shane Banks had two doubles, and Donald Bush two singles for the Wildcats, who also got an RBI single from R.J. Sholar and a double from Will Stagner.

Wes Lasher had a solo home run for Livingston Central in the fourth inning.

Donald Bush absorbed the pitching loss for Trigg County, allowing eight hits and five walks in five innings.  He struck out four.

The loss moved Trigg to 3-2 in the district, while Livingston Central and Crittenden County are both 4-2.

Fort Campbell 11 Trigg County 5

Fort Campbell took advantage of 11 Trigg County errors to post an 11-5 win over the Lady Wildcats today at the Complex.

The loss drops Trigg's record to 1-12 on the season.

The Lady Falcons scored three runs in the third and five more in the fifth to put the game away.

Heather Hinze had three hits and three RBIs for Fort Campbell (4-6), while Jordan Brower and Deanna Anderson also had two hits each.

Samantha Furr had two singles and an RBI for Trigg County, who also got doubles from Karlie Stewart and Keisha Stewart and a single from Sierra Bush.

Dakota Littlejohn gave up 12 hits in seven innings, but 10 of the 11 runs she allowed were unearned.  She struck out five and walked four while tossing 142 pitches.

Trigg County is scheduled to play three games Saturday in the UHA Invitational in Hopkinsville.

Western Kentucky creates scholarship in recognition of Ty Rogers

Western Kentucky has created a new scholarship to be presented annually to a Lyon County High School senior.  And they have Ty Rogers to thank for it.

WKU President Gary Ransdell made the annoucement this week at the school's annual postseason awards banquet at E.A. Diddle Arena.

The scholarship is made possible because of Rogers' buzzer-beating shot to beat Drake in the first round of the NCAA Basketball Tournament.  His shot was voted the Pontiac Game Changing Play of the Tournament by viewers nationwide.  As a result, WKU was given $100,000 for its general scholarship fund.

“It’s very emotional.  It’s hard for me to believe that something like that is even happening. It’s overwhelming," Rogers told the Bowling Green Daily News.
