Trigg County almost choked away another late lead but showed some maturity and the ability to hit some clutch free throws as they knocked off Caldwell County 77-70 tonight in Princeton.
Trigg led by 13 points with 1:03 left before Caldwell County cut the lead to 72-67 with :15 left. However, Shelton Burress and Jonathon King each hit two free throws in the final seconds to help Trigg pull out their first road win in over a month and snap a five-game losing streak.
The Wildcats hit 13 three-pointers in the game and shot 26-of-56 from the field. The key stat was free throws where Trigg his 12-of-17, while Caldwell County was just 4-of-17 at the charity stripe.
The Wildcats led 21-17 after one quarter, but Caldwell began the second quarter on a 12-0 run to take a 29-21 lead. Trigg answered with a 12-4 run to tie the game at 33 at halftime.
Trigg (10-12) took control near the end of the third quarter on consecutive 3-pointers by Zeke Wright, Shelton Burress, and Jonathon King.
King led the Wildcats with 35 points and 12 rebounds, while Burress added 17 points. Jalik Alexander added eight points, and Russell Lancaster scored five points and grabbed nine rebounds.
Tron Gray led Caldwell County (12-11) with 25 points and 12 rebounds, Jake Pepper scored 18, and L.J. Wilson added seven points and 17 rebounds.
Trigg County plays at Graves County Saturday night.
