Christian County pitcher Tyler Gilliland will sign a scholarship agreement to play baseball at Western Kentucky University. The signing ceremoney will be held Wednesday at 2:30pm in the cafeteria at Christian County High School.
CCHS head coach Josh Hunt said Gilliland pitched in a showcase in Bowling Green a couple of weeks ago and was offered a scholarship by WKU before he left. Hunt added WKU had been interested in Gilliland for "quite a while."
Gilliland was 6-2 with a 2.49 ERA for the Colonels last year, despite battling a back problem that limited his innings pitched. Over the summer, he pitched for the Kentucky Junior Baseball team. As a sophomore, Gilliland notched a 9-2 record and a microscopic 0.72 ERA.
Western Kentucky was 25-30 last year, including a 15-15 mark in the Sun Belt Conference. However, Gilliland is expected to join a young team at WKU that includes several of the state's best players from recent years. Hunt said Gilliland was signed to be a pitcher but could play some outfield for the Hilltoppers also.
Gilliland could immediately step in and help a WKU pitching staff that had a team ERA of 6.11 last year.
