I let this one slip up on me until Tom Rogers sent me an e-mail of an online article he read in today's Richmond Register.
This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Todd County plane crash that killed 11 people coming to Hopkinsville to watch Trigg County's playoff game with Richmond Madison.
Some background on the story.
Trigg County had moved to the new Perdue Field in the next to last game of the season -- a 54-6 win over Todd County Central. The following week, they chewed up the wet field in a 50-20 win over Fulton City. Because the new turf couldn't be fixed in time for the postseason, Trigg County played their "home" playoff games at Walnut Street Stadium in Hopkinsville.
After beating Allen County 34-0 in the first round, the Wildcats hosted a Richmond Madison team that was 12-0 entering their state semifinal game with Trigg County.
Trigg County overcame the ejection of leading rusher Selby Grubbs (many Wildcat fans believe the ejection was provoked purposely by the RMHS player) and won the game 19-10.
Following the game, a chartered plane carrying 11 Richmond fans crashed in a field in Todd County after a layer of ice began to form on the plane’s wings.
There was a memorial in Richmond that paid tribute to those killed in the crash that has since been moved to a new location.
Read more about the memorial and the rememberance in today's RICHMOND REGISTER newspaper.
