Life after Woodson -- Curtis Pulley?

Curtis Pulley was ahead of a Heisman Trophy candidate on the UK depth chart just 15 months ago.  But things got tough for the former Hopkinsville High star and 2004 Mr. Football.  Lack of academic standing caused Pulley to be booted from the team and school in January.

He has since went back to UK, gone to class, and plays an important role on the UK Scout team.  UK offensive coordinator Joker Phillips said Pulley has played the part of Arkansas running back Darren McFadden, and Florida's Tim Tebow and Percy Harvin during UK practices.

Speaking at the Christian County UK Alumni Dinner Tuesday, Phillips said that he expects Pulley to be the frontrunner for the starting quarterback job next year and had high praise for the redshirt junior.

Robert Goulet has died

Famous crooner Bob Goulet died Tuesday in California while awaiting a lung transplant.  He was 73.

Many people remember Goulet as a famous singer on Broadway and in Las Vegas shows.  People like me at the bottom of the entertainment fan food chain remember his roles in "Alice" as Linda Lavin's favorite singer or as the villian in The Naked Gun sequel.

It was 11 years ago that many UK basketball fans met Robert Goulet for the first time.  Click the video to take a trip down memory lane.  RIP Bob.

Sholar, Morris compete at long drive golf event

Trigg County's Jackie Sholar advanced past the first round of the Re/Max Long Drive Competition in Nevada last week, but could go no further.

Sholar competed in the senior division of the event, held in Mesquite, Nevada.  In the first round held Wednesday, Sholar advanced with the long drive of the round, 358 yards.  In the second round, he tied for the long drive at 337 yards.  However, he didn't advance when his drives in the next round were out of bounds.

On Friday, Mike Morris competed in the Open Division and hit his drive 350 yards, which was sixth-best in his group and 17 yards short of advancing to the next round.

First place in the Open Division took home $125,000.

Trigg runners compete at the Meet of Champions

Trigg County took part in one of the larger cross country meets of the season -- the Meet of Champions that was held Saturday in Lexington.

Here are the results --

In the girls' race, Lynese Byers finished in third place out of 34 runners in the Class A division with a time of 20:25 over the 3.1-mile course.  Danville's Kaitlin Snapp won the race in a time of 19:26.  Also for Trigg County, Rachel Cronin was 32nd in a time of 29:10.

In the boys' varsity race, Jay Jolly was 22nd in a time of 19:07.  Zeke Wright finished in 33rd in a time of 20:39, and Grady Cofield was 53rd in a time of 25:00.  St. Henry won the team title with 20 points.

In the middle school girls' race, Monica Jones finished 233rd in a time of 19:30 over the 2.4-mile course.  Caitlin Beyea of North Oldham Middle bested 320 other runners to win the race in a time of 15:08.

In the middle school boys' race, Romaine Cunningham finished 22nd out of 398 runners with a time of 14:15 over the 2.4-mile course.  James Brown of Bell County felt good enough to win the race in a time of 13:01.  Other Trigg runners were Jakelzie Martin in 120th (15:44), Raymond Cronin in 310th (17:43), Landon Sumner in 339th (18:28), Kyle Rivera in 353rd (18:53), Matthew Brokering in 389th (22:00), and Hunter Allen in 390th (22:02).  As a team, Trigg County finished 39th out of 50 middle school teams.

In the elementary school division, Alex Olin finished 23rd in the girls' race with a time of 13:13 over the 1.8-mile course, while Macey King was 62nd in 13:48.  Trevor Prieskorn of Bowling Green Middle won the race in 11:56 as there were 315 runners in the race.

In the elementary boys' race, Brien Dossett led the way for Trigg County with an 84th place finish in a time of 12:50, followed by Jayven Jones in 88th (12:52), Ethan Dossett 99th (13:02), Debo Mayes 134th (13:24), Corbin Estes 163rd (13:42), Tyler Estes 186th (13:54), and Adam Calhoun was 282nd in a time of 15:06.  Chase Geary of Muhlenberg North beat 352 other runners to win the race in 11:13.

As a team, Trigg County finished 15th out of 45 teams.

Trigg County will prepare this week for the Region I Meet in Paducah.

Trinity College wins on a 15-lateral final play

Truly one of the wildest finishes to a game I've ever seen.  Trinity College beats Millsaps on a 15-lateral final play.

Fort Campbell 59 Trigg County 7

Wow.  Not much more you can say about Fort Campbell's 59-7 win over Trigg County at Perdue Field Friday night.

The Falcons scored four times in the first quarter and held the Wildcats without a first down in the first half while building a 34-0 lead.

Fort Campbell outgained Trigg County 385-92 in the contest.

Trigg County falls to 6-3 with their third straight loss and will close out the regular season at Fulton County next week.  Fort Campbell is now 7-2 with their seventh straight win and will play Franklin-Simpson next week.

Other news and notes from this game:

• The 59 points marks the first time in the 34-game history of the series that Fort Campbell has topped the 50-point mark.  The Falcons lead the all-time series 22-12.
• The 52-point margin of defeat was the sixth worst in school history.
• The 59 points allowed was the eighth most in school history.
• Trigg County has allowed 100 points in consecutive games for only the fourth time in school history.  The other three times occurred in the 1998 season, which was the last one for Dixie Jones as Trigg County head coach.
• The Wildcats finish with a 1-3 record in October.  They had won 18 straight October games coming into the season.  Their last losing October was 1999.
• Trigg has lost three games in a row for the first time since the 1999 season.
• The Wildcats went three-and-out on their first seven possessions of the game.
• John Reinick punted eight times for an average of 32.6 ypp.
• Trigg was penalized a season-high 105 yards on nine flags, and Xavier Brison was ejected from the game for a "flagrant personal foul" when he pushed a Fort Campbell player from behind.  Fort Campbell's Cory Tucker was also tossed for unsportsmanlike conduct.  Both players will miss next week's game.
• Devin Stewart caught two passes for 23 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown in the third quarter.  He also intercepted a pass and was named the WKDZ Player of the Game.
• Fort Campbell's Troy Turner rushed 16 times for 212 yards and scored on touchdown runs of 45, 3, and 27 yards.  He also caught an 18-yard touchdown pass on a 4th-and-13 play.
• Dexter Durrante scored two touchdowns in a 12 second span when he rushed for a 42-yard score and then ripped the football away from Trigg's Brandon Bridges on the kickoff return and raced 22 yards for the score.
• Trigg County crossed the Fort Campbell 40-yard line twice -- once on their touchdown set up by a bad punt snap and the other on the final play of the game.
• Trigg was 3-of-15 on 3rd down conversions.  Fort Campbell was only 3-of-8 but averaged 9.0 yards a play on first down.  Trigg averaged 2.1 yards on first down.
• Trigg had 38 rushing attempts for 56 yards (1.4 ypc.).  Fort Campbell had 299 yards on 33 carries (9.0 ypc.).

Offense vs. Defense

Trigg County is another bad game away from doing something they haven't done in eight years -- lose three straight games.  Ironically, that happened in Curtis Higgins' first season as head coach.  Fast forward to 2007 and it could happen in Shannon Burcham's first season as head coach.

Trigg County ran out to a 5-0 start before the bye week between the Reidland win and the Heath win.  While coaches and fans alike felt like the bye came at a good time, the Wildcats haven't looked the same.

Some people want to blame the offense, some want to blame the defense.  I think arguements can be made for both.

OFFENSE - While the 75/25 run to pass ratio may seem a bit high, it's the same ratio Trigg County had last year when they won 10 games.  Of course, last year's offense (27.8 ppg.) was also the lowest scoring in seven years.  Trigg's offense is averaging almost a 100 yards less in the last three games than in the first five.  In the same span, Trigg averaged 6.4 yards a rush in the first five compared to 5.6 yards the last three.  The biggest drop-off is in the passing game where Trigg was averaging 15 pass attempts a game the first five compared to 12 a game the last three.  As a result, Trigg's passing yards per game has fallen from 96.8 to 70 yards a game. 

Another big factor has been Trigg County's inefficiency on first down, which has also affected their 3rd Down conversion rate.  In the loss to Christian County, the Wildcats averaged 4.8 yards on first down.  Last week, it was just 1.2 yards on first down against Caldwell County.  Like the season, Trigg's run/pass ratio on first down has been 75% run/25% pass the last three weeks.  In the first five games, Trigg's conversion percentage was 43.6%.  The last three it has been just 30-percent. 

DEFENSE - Trigg County has been outscored 42-27 in the first quarter the past three games.  The Wildcats have also allowed a touchdown on their opponent's first drive of the game in all three games.  Rushing yards allowed has more than doubled and total yards allowed is up 148 yards a game.  Another big factor has been field position.  Heath's average starting position was their own 34 yard line.  Christian County's average start was their own 35.  Caldwell County's average start was their own 44 yard line.  Trigg's defense has also committed penalties that kept alive a scoring drive for both Heath and Christian County and twice last week at Caldwell County. 

For the season, Trigg's defense has been called for two more penalties than the offense.  However, the offensive penalties average 7.9 yards a flag, while the defensive penalties are to the tune of 9.6 yards a flag.  Wildcat opponents have also picked up five first downs via the penalty the past three games.

Obviously, they are looking for some more revenue-generating sources such as luxury boxes around the top of the arena.

A couple of Louisville fans were commenting to me today that they felt UK was just trying to play catch up because UL announced their new arena plans earlier this year.

I know UK has been exploring some arena options for years, from on-site venues to massive renovations to Rupp Arena.   Of course, UK's lease with Rupp Arena isn't up until 2017 or 2018 so a new Rupp Arena may be the equivalent to the new bridges they promised across LBL in the early 1990s.

Home field advantage?

A lot has been made of Trigg County's loss to Caldwell County Friday and fact that it cost Trigg County home field advantage in the playoffs.  However, here's a couple of things to keep in mind.

1.) Trigg County went through the same mid-season funk last year, losing to Fort Campbell and Caldwell County in back-to-back weeks before rebounding to make a long playoff run.

2.) Here's a scenario where Trigg County could get three of their four playoff games at home after all.

• Nov. 9 - Trigg County will host Murray.  Nothing will change this.  One game at home.
• Nov. 16 - Should Trigg win and Heath somehow beat Caldwell County, Trigg would host Heath in the second round.  This would be a similar path the Wildcats took in 1989.  Murray in the first round.  Heath in the second round.  Trigg advanced to the state finals that year.  Let's just say Caldwell takes care of business and the Wildcats are going back to Princeton for the fourth game in a row.
• Nov. 23 - Should Trigg get past Caldwell County in the playoffs for the second straight year, they play the teams from District #3.  If Green County wins their district, the Wildcats would have to get out a map and try and find Greensburg for their third round game.  Should Glasgow or Metcalfe County upset Green County, they would come to Perdue Field.  Another home game for Trigg.
• Nov. 30 - This game is held at the home field of the Region 1 team that makes it this far, whether it's Trigg County or Caldwell County.  Seeds don't matter at this point.  How many bleachers would they have to bring in if Danville were to visit Perdue Field with a trip to Louisville on the line?

3.) First things first.  Let's fix the defense and offense so we can enjoy the possibility down the line.

Trigg County held on to their top ten ranking in the Associated Press Class 2A football poll -- barely.

The Wildcats are ranked 10th this week, getting 15 more votes than #11 Bardstown.

Fort Campbell moves up to #5, Caldwell County enters the poll at #7, and Owensboro Catholic is #9.

Davis, Brooks named to the All-Region soccer team

Trigg County's Laykn Brooks was named to the First Team All-Second Region soccer team in voting conducted by the region's coaches based on season play.

Lady Wildcat defender Taylor Davis was named to the Second Team.

It's the second straight year they've been honored at the region level.

Second Region champs in action

State Tournament action in soccer and volleyball begins this week at various locations around the state.

Hopkinsville beat University Heights 3-2 Saturday to win their second straight region title.  Hoptown (10-8-2) will play at First Region champ Heath (14-7-1) tonight at 7pm.  Heath beat Hopkinsville 2-0 in the first round of the state tourney last year.

If Hopkinsville wins, they will host the winner of the Bowling Green/Madisonville game Wednesday at the Stadium of Champions.

In girls' soccer, Caldwell County (18-2-1) puts their 17-game winning streak on the line Tuesday night when they host Marshall County (16-5-1).  The Lady Marshals beat Graves County 1-0 in a shootout Saturday to win the First Region title.

Caldwell County has lost to Marshall County in the first round of the state tournament the past two years, losing 3-0 last year and 4-1 in overtime in 2005.

The State Volleyball Tournament doesn't begin until Friday.  Caldwell County (32-5) will play Ninth Region champion Notre Dame Academy (21-9) at 6pm Friday at Northern Kentucky University.

Caldwell County 41 Trigg County 14

Not a lot you can say about this one as a Trigg County fan.  They were simply taken to the woodshed by Caldwell County.

Caldwell won this one in the first four minutes of the game.  The Tigers win the coin toss.  On a 3rd-and-14 play, Michael Lipson gains nine yards on a pass play but is speared by a Trigg player on the ground, resulting in a 15-yard penalty.  On the very next play, Will Barnes hits Eric Faughn on a short middle screen that turns into a 60-yard touchdown.

Caldwell 7 Trigg 0

Trigg stumbles on their first drive, with a bad punt snap on fourth down resulting in a 21-yard loss and gives Caldwell the ball at the Trigg 15-yard line.  Two plays later, Barnes hits Brandon Sigler with another middle screen for a 7-yard touchdown pass with 8:07 left in the first quarter.

Game over.

Trigg County rushed for a season-low 90 yards on 38 carries.  Caldwell County rolled up 361 yards of offense.

"We didn't respond well to last week's loss," Wildcat head coach Shannon Burcham said on the WKDZ postgame show.  "We're not making plays on either side of the football, and we're not where we need to be.  We're just going to keep on working."

Caldwell is the top seed in the playoffs and will host playoff games as long as they win.  Trigg County is the #2 seed and will host Murray in the first round.  Trigg would travel to Caldwell County in the second round if they won.  Past that, Trigg County would travel, although if they advance past the third round, they would host the semi-state game regardless of the seed.  That would be Danville, Bardstown, Fort Campbell, or Owensboro Catholic coming to Perdue Field.

If Trigg's defense doesn't improve, Trigg won't make it past the second round of the playoffs.

Other stats from the game:

• Caldwell outagined Trigg 361-194 in total yards.
• Scotty Mayes rushed for 116 yards on seven carries and caught two passes for 68 yards.  He scored on a 77 yard run and a 43-yard pass from Donald Bush.  Trigg gained minus 26 yards on their other 31 carries.
• Donald Bush was sacked nine times, equaling the number of sacks Trigg had allowed in their previous seven games.  Trigg gave up 17 sacks all of last year and just nine in the 2005 season.
• Caldwell County quarterback Will Barnes was 15-of-23 passing for 195 yards.  He completed passes to seven different receivers.
• Caldwell County has held Trigg to less than 100 yards for the third straight game dating back to last year.

Trigg County (6-2) will host Fort Campbell next Friday at Perdue Field.  Fort Campbell beat Owensboro Catholic 29-6 Friday night.

NBC and Notre Dame football

While networks such as ABC, CBS, and ESPN show some of the top college football games in the nation each week, NBC is stuck with Notre Dame, their 1-6 season, and their huge contract to carry their games.

Trigg County's loss to Christian County last week saw them drop a few spots across the board in the human and computer rankings this week.

Trigg County fell to seventh in the Bluegrasspreps.com Class 2A poll.  Owensboro Catholic is third, and Fort Campbell is fifth.

Trigg County slips to #6 in AP Poll

Trigg County dropped to #6 in this week's Associated Press Class 2A Football Poll following their 49-28 loss to Christian County.  The Wildcats will likely drop a bit farther in the Bluegrasspreps.com Football Poll that will be released Tuesday night.

The Wildcats are still one spot ahead of Fort Campbell, who they play in two weeks in Cadiz.  Trigg's opponent this week, Caldwell County, is ranked 12th.

Kentucky ranked #8 in AP, #7 in first BCS Standings

Kentucky's 43-37 triple-overtime win vaulted the Wildcats to #8 in the Associated Press College Football Poll, and even better news -- #7 in the first BCS Standings released Sunday.  Both LSU and South Carolina are ranked ahead of the Wildcats in the BCS Standings, which means one of them would have to drop past Kentucky in order for UK to play in a BCS Bowl.  Rules state no more than two teams from one conference can play in the BCS Bowls.

Despite UK's jump in the AP Poll (voted by media), the coaches only voted them 13th this week.  Keep two things in mind.  One, the USA Today Coaches Poll is a determining poll in the BCS Standings, as well as several others. 

Two, here is a list of the coaches who vote in the poll.

Now, why are the bolded names significant?  Bowden, Kragthorpe, Nutt, and Miles have been "upset" by the Wildcats in the past 10 months.  Upsets sting a little more than normal losses.

Steve Spurrier is just Steve Spurrier.  Who knows?  Maybe his ballot said South Carolina #1 and Kentucky #2.  Highly unlikely.

It should also be noted that two UK alums -- Mike Leach of Texas Tech and Howard Schnellenberger of Florida Atlantic -- also vote in the poll.

I don't know how any of these coaches voted this week.  I do know many of them ranked the Wildcats five spots lower than the AP did.  Only Virginia, ranked #19 in the coaches' poll and unranked by the AP, has a larger difference between the polls than UK.

Christian County 49 Trigg County 28

Trigg County suffered their first loss of the 2007 in a hard way, losing to Christian County 49-28 Friday night at Perdue Field.  The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for the Wildcats and was their worst home field loss since Christian County opened the 1998 season with a 62-0 win in Cadiz.

Christian County sophomore Vashun Banks had 228 rushing yards on 13 carries and scored five TDS (12, 38, 56, 71, and 25).

Trigg County is 6-1 and will travel to Caldwell County next week for a game to determine home field advantage in the playoffs with the top seed.  Caldwell crushed Webster County 56-0.

Other notes from a chilly night at Perdue Field:

• Christian County outgained Trigg County 418-278.  The Colonels averaged 8.5 yards a snap and 10.3 yards a rush (394 yards on 38 carries).
• James Bauer (77 yards on 14 carries) and Malcolm McDuffen (70 yards on five carries) also topped 70 yards rushing.
• Christian County led 20-14 at halftime but David Wallace took the opening kickoff of the second half back 70 yards for a score.  Following a Trigg punt, Banks ran 71 yards on their first play from scrimmage in the half to seal the win.
• Christian County has won eight straight games against the Wildcats in the series and leads 14-8-1 overall.  Trigg last beat the Colonels in 1983.
• Donald Bush threw his first interception of the year, ending a streak of 142 consecutive passes without a pick dating back to last year.  He was 6-of-15 passing for 60 yards and had two toouchdown passes dropped in the end zone.
• Scotty Mayes ran 11 times for 79 yards for the Wildcats, and Brandon Bridges rushed for 64 yards on 14 carries.  Trigg had 218 yards on 34 carries.
• Christian County led 49-14 with :51 left in the game before Trigg County scored, recovered and onside kick, and scored again with :31 left.
• Drew Pool returned a fumble 83 yards for a touchdown for the Wildcats in the first quarter, setting a new school record.  The previous long fumble recovery for a touchdown was an 80-yarder by Anthony Wilkerson against Ballard Memorial in 1981.
• Scotty Mayes scored two more touchdowns, bringing his total for the season to 11.
• John Reinick was 4-for-4 on extra point kicks and is 32-of-34 on the season.

Christian County at Trigg County

Trigg County looks for their first 7-0 start in 18 years when they host Christian County (3-4) tonight at Perdue Field.  It's Ham Festival weekend and Hall of Fame Night as well.

Tonight also kicks off a brutal three-game stretch that will see the Wildcats host Christian County, travel to Caldwell County in a game to determine home field advantage for the first four rounds of the playoffs, and host a red hot Fort Campbell team for Senior Night.

Other news and views about tonight's game:

• Christian County leads the all-time series 13-8-1 and have won the last seven in a row dating back to 1983.  Trigg last won in 1983 when Larry Kehrwald's fourth quarter field goal won the game 17-14.  Trigg should have won in 1984 if not for 150 penalty yards and a Christian County blocked punt for a touchdown when they had 12 men on the field.
• Trigg is 4-7-1 against Christian County at Perdue Field.
• This marks the first time since 1974 that Trigg County has played Christian County and Hopkinsville in the same season.
• Trigg County is 3-5 on games played on this date in history.  The three wins came against Lone Oak (34-13) in 1973, Reidland (52-0) in 1984, and a 54-46 shootout win over Caverna in 1990.
• Trigg has won seven straight home games against non-district opponents dating back to their 20-7 rain-shortened loss to Mayfield in 2003.

Football Alumni Hall of Fame to induct three tonight

The Trigg County High School Football Alumni will induct three people into their Hall of Fame during a halftime ceremony at the Trigg/Christian County game tonight at Perdue Field.

The three inductees are:

• Todd Butts (1982-85) - Butts was honorable mention All-State in 1984 and All-State in 1985.  He is regarded as one of the best defensive ends to play at Trigg County. Butts had 63 tackles his senior season despite being double and triple teamed most of the time.  He also had seven sacks and two fumble recoveries his senior season and had 68 tackles and five sacks his junior season.
• Jimmy Mathis (1969-73) - Mathis was an all-state quarterback his junior season in helping lead the Wildcats to their second straight state title.  He currently ranks sixth on the all-time passing yards list with 2,695 yards.  When he graduated, he was second.  Mathis currently ranks sixth in career completions (158), seventh in attempts (325), and sixth in career TD throws (23).  His 19 completions in a game is still tied for a school record.  His three 200-yard passing games in 1973 is still third most all-time. Mathis started a varsity game as an 8^th grader and ran for a touchdown. He is also remembered for throwing for 232 yards and two touchdowns with a separated shoulder in a 1973 game at Todd County.
• Larry Palmer (1969-72) - Palmer was an all-state tackle in his junior season of 1971.  He saw time as a starter on defense his freshman year and is considered one of the most athletic defensive tackles in school history. Palmer was twice voted defensive player of the game by coaches in 1971. He had three fumble recoveries his junior season, including two in the playoffs.  Palmer was All WKC for Class A-AA in 1971.  He missed four games in 1972 with dislocated elbow but was still part of a defensive unit that season that only allowed 6.6 points per game in 1972.

Two named to All-District Volleyball Team

Congrats to junior Casey Banister and eighth grader Samantha Harper who were named to the All Seventh District Volleyball Team from Trigg County.

Three Lady Wildcats named to All-District team

Caldwell County beat Lyon County 3-0 to win the Fourth District Girls Soccer championship Thursday night in Eddyville.

Both Caldwell (16-2-1) and Lyon County (13-6) advance to next week's region tournament, and there is a good chance they will meet again in the region title game.

Trigg County players Abigail Torian, Taylor Davis, and Hanna Oliver were named to the All-District Team which is based on season play.

Trigg ABA Sign-ups Saturday

Signups for the Trigg County ABA Basketball League will be Saturday, Oct. 13 and Oct. 20 from 9am-noon at the Trigg Elementary School Gym.  Tryouts will be held Oct. 27.

Registration forms can be picked up at the elementary school office and at the local daycares.  Deadline to enter is Oct. 27.

Caldwell County 2 Trigg County 0

Trigg County had played Caldwell County tough in two losses this year.  They weren't able to make it over the hump in the third game as the Lady Tigers ended Trigg's season with a 25-10, 25-12 win in the semi-finals of the Seventh District Tournament Tuesday in Marion.

Caldwell County (29-5) will play Crittenden County (13-12) in Thursday's championship game.  The Lady Rockets struggled past Livingston Central, dropping the first game 25-19 before rallying to win the last two 25-18, 25-15.

Casey Banister had 6 assists.

Kalesha Williams had 5 blocks and 2 kills.

Amber Morris had 2 blocks.

Molly Thompson had 1 kill.

Stephanie Graves had 1 kill.

Kassy Davis had 1 kill.

T'Ana Dixon had 1 kill.

Alyssa Weber had 1 ace.

"The match was much closer than the scores would indicate.  There were several long rallies with good digs by us.  Unfortunately, Caldwell won most of those long rallies," Lady Wildcat head coach Rick Erickson said.  "I am proud of how the girls kept fighting regardless of what the score was.  Caldwell is one of the top teams in the region, and we competed with them.  In the end, they just made more plays.  I am pleased with the effort put forth by all of our players."

Trigg County's season is over with a record of 11-23 -- a three win improvement over last year.  The Lady Wildcats are scheduled to lose just one full-time starter from this year's team due to graduation.

Lyon County 2 Trigg County 1

Trigg County saw their girls' soccer season end with a 2-1 loss at Lyon County Tuesday night in the semifinals of the Fourth District Tournament.

For the Lady Wildcats, their season ends with a record of 5-8-3, which is the third straight season they've won five games.

"We gave it quite an effort, but came up short," said Lady Wildcat head coach Mike Smith.  " They were able to end their season playing their best soccer, which is about all a coach can ask."

Lyon County scored 12 minutes into the game and added their second goal five minutes before the end of the first half for a 2-0 lead.

Trigg County got on the board with 12 minutes left when Brooklyn Thomas scored to draw the Lady Wildcats to within 2-1. 

"We had several more chances, but couldn't draw even," Smith said.

Trigg did get some quality minutes from leading scorer Laykn Brooks, who was cleared medically to play after injuring her knee three weeks ago.

"I think it seemed to inspire the girls who finally played a half of soccer with the intensity we have needed all year," Smith said.

Lyon County (13-5) will advance to Thursday's championship game where they will play Caldwell County (15-2-1), who crushed Dawson Springs 6-0 to advance.

As for the Lady Wildcats, they lose two seniors and should bring in several potential contributors from this year JV team in 2008.

"I think the team finally stepped up and showed they are ready to take the next step. Hopefully we can pick up next season right where we left off tonight and finally start putting some more marks in the win column," Smith said.

VOLLEYBALL - Trigg County vs. Caldwell County in the Seventh District Tournament at Crittenden County (6pm).  The Lady Wildcats are 11-22 and coming off an 0-7 trip to Murfreesboro where they played against some of the better teams in middle Tennessee.  Head coach Rick Erickson is hoping that level of competition pays off tonight as the Lady Wildcats face a 28-5 Caldwell County squad that has tied their school record for wins in a season.  Caldwell County swept the season series from Trigg County, but won the four games by a total of 14 points.  Crittenden County, the defending district champion, plays Livingston Central at 8 pm.  The championship game is Thursday night.

GIRLS SOCCER - Trigg County vs. Lyon County in the Fourth District Tournament at Eddyville (8pm).  The Lady Wildcats enter the postseason on a bit of a stumble, losing five of their last six games.  In five of those games, they have allowed more than three goals just once.  Having lost their top three scorers (two to injury and one to suspension), the Lady Wildcats will have to find a way to generate some offense against a Lyon County team that is 12-5 on the season.  Lyon beat Trigg 3-0 back on Sept. 20.  Dawson Springs, who beat Crittenden County 5-0 Monday, plays Caldwell County Tuesday in the first game at 6pm.  The championship game is Thursday night.

Lyon County 2 Trigg County 0

Trigg County saw their boys' soccer season come to an end with a 2-0 loss to Lyon County in the Fourth District Tournament Monday night in Princeton.

Trigg's season record was 6-8-3.

Lyon County jumped out to a 1-0 lead, although it could have been 2-0 if not for Josh Green's save off a penalty kick.

The Wildcats outshot Lyon 16-4 in the second half but were shut out for the second straight game.

"We seemed nervous at the beginning, and it took a while for us to get going," said Wildcat head coach Josh Nichols.  "We just couldn't put the ball in the net again.  We had numerous chances where we got in alone against the goalkeeper, but we couldn't score.  Our effort was good, and we played fairly well, but we just didn't put the ball in the net."

The six wins by the Wildcats equal last year's total, however their defense showed a 19-goals against improvement from last year.  It also marked Trigg's fifth straight exit from the district tournament in the first round.

   

Wildcats dropping slightly in football polls

The Associated Press showed once again why their high school football polls are laughable.  If you win, you move up and if you lose, you drop.  Regardless of who you play.  Danville could beat the Richmond Jaycees, while Trigg lose to the Tennessee Titans on a last second field goal and Danville would be ranked ahead of Trigg.  (I use Danville because they are the #1 team in the state and rightfully so.  I'm not saying they are over-ranked, I just needed a team for an example.)

But how does Todd County get ten votes this week to be considered the 11th ranked team in the state.  The same Todd County that lost to Owensboro Catholic 47-7 last week and have a 1-6 record this year.  Did the voters mean to vote for Trigg County?  When it comes to the AP Poll, who really knows anymore.

Trigg County dropped the #4 this week as Corbin jumped them into the #3 slot.  Corbin isn't a bad team.  Clint Cashen and Ryan Fritts are one of the better 1-2 combos in the state in Class 2A.  But if those 10 points that Todd County got should have been earmarked for the Wildcats, it cost them the #3 ranking this week.

Trigg Volleyball takes doughnut at Tennessee tournament

No one can accuse Rick Erickson of dodging the competition.

The Lady Wildcats went 0-for-7 in the Mid-Tennessee Classic over the weekend in Murfreesboro, Tenn.  The tournament is one of the largest in Tennessee, with 32 teams from four states competing.

Trigg County opened with Father Ryan of Nahsville, the defending Division II state champion who won 49 of 54 games last year.  Father Ryan won 25-4, 25-9.  In two other games Friday, Trigg County lost to the host school, Mufreesboro Blackman 25-15, 25-6, and fell to Chattanooga Christian 30-28, 19-25, 4-15.  I would have to check, but that may be the first time Trigg County has scored 30 points in a game.

On Saturday, the Lady Wildcats fell to Eagleville, Tenn. 25-5, 25-10; lost to Summertown, Tenn. 25-15, 25-18; dropped a contest to University School of Nashville 25-23, 25-14; and lost to LaVergne 25-10, 25-16.

Kalesha Williams had 24 blocks, 16 kills and 4 aces.

Casey Banister had 17 assists, 6 aces and 3 kills.

Molly Thompson had 10 blocks, 7 kills, 4 aces and 1 assist.

Amber Morris had 15 blocks and 2 kills.

Samantha Harper had 7 assists, 2 aces and 1 kill.

Trigg County is 11-22 on the season heading into tonight's Seventh District Tournament game at Crittenden County.  The Lady Wildcats play Caldwell County at 6pm at Rocket Arena.  Caldwell swept the season series with Trigg, winning four games by a total of 14 points.

Andre Woodson, Brian Brohm outside of top ten in Davey O'Brien Award

While UK's Andre Woodson and Louisville's Brian Brohm are putting up huge numbers this year, with both mentioned among Heisman Trophy candidates, neither are in the top ten for fan voting for the Davey O'Brien Award, given each year to the nation's best college quarterback.

As of today, Brohm is 12th in voting, while Woodson is 14th.  Florida's Tim Tebow is the top-vote getter right now, followed by Shaun Carney of Air Force, and Corey Leonard of Arkansas State.

Fans are able to vote for the starting quarterback from any of the 119 Division I-A football programs, leaving room for the possibility of a quarterback who is not on the Watch List to win the award. Both Woodson and Brohm were among 35 quarterbacks selected to a preseason watch list.  Fans can vote once daily on The O'Brien's Web site in hopes of moving their pick to the final round.

The top three quarterbacks who garner the most votes will be added to The O'Brien semifinalist list, and the Fan Vote will count as 5% in determining the finalists and winner. The 2007 O'Brien winner will be announced on The Home Depot College Football Awards Show on ESPN Dec. 6.

Trigg County looks to extend their season tonight when they play Lyon County at 6pm in the first round of the Fourth District Tournament at Butler Stadium in Princeton.

The two teams split during the regular season.  The Wildcats snapped a 10-game losing streak to the Lyons with a 3-2 win in Cadiz back on Aug. 28.  Lyon County returned the favor with a 4-3 win Sept. 24 in Eddyville.

Trigg enters the game with a record of 6-6-3, while Lyon County is 5-12.  Lyon County leads the all-time series with Trigg 24-11, including a 3-1 record in district tournament play.  Trigg's only win over Lyon County in the postseason came in the 2002 district tournament that the Wildcats won in Princeton.

The 8pm game has Caldwell County (10-6-1) playing Dawson Springs (1-16).

Alex Jenkins named TCHS Football Homecoming Queen

Alex Jenkins, the daughter of Debra Jenkins, was named the 2007 Trigg County High School Football Homecoming Queen before Trigg's game with Heath Friday.  Standing in as her escort was Erin Eagleson.  A picture of the full homecoming court can be found at wkdzradio.com.

University Heights 6 Trigg County 0

UHA shut out Trigg County for the first time since the season opener by a score of 6-0 Saturday in Hopkinsville.

No other details were available.

The Wildcats fall to 6-6-3 on the season, while University Heights improves to 11-3-1.  The game was the first played between the two schools since Trigg County began a fight with the Blazers in the final seconds of their region tournament opener in Eddyville in 2002.

Trigg County will play Lyon County Monday night in the first round of the district tournament at Princeton.

University Heights 2 Trigg County 1

University Height scored the game-winner inside the game's final three minutes to beat Trigg County 2-1 Saturday in the regular season finale for both teams.

Taylor Davis scored off a direct kick with three minutes left to tie the game at 1-1, but UHA managed to score a goal from about 35 yards out in the 79th minute to get the win.

The loss was Trigg County's fifth in their last six games and drops their record to 5-7-3 entering the district tournament Tuesday at Lyon County.

"The girls pulled together and basically dominated the second half in terms of opportunities and possession," said Lady Wildcat head coach Mike Smith.  "I liked the overall effort put forth in the game, and if we can have a solid practice on Monday, fix some of the issues we seem to keep having, then I'm optimistic our game with Lyon can be more competitive than many people think."

UHA improved to 10-7-1 with the win.

Trigg County will play Lyon County Tuesday in the Fourth District Tournament in Eddyville, while UHA will play Hopkinsville Wednesday in the Third District Tournament in Elkton.

Trigg County 35 Heath 21

Trigg County moved to 6-0 for the first time in seven years with a 35-21 win over Heath on Homecoming Night at Perdue Field.

The Wildcats rushed for 181 of their 344 yards in the second half and had two backs approach 150 yards for the night.

Trigg County is 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the district, while Heath falls to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in district play.  If Trigg beats Caldwell County in two weeks, they will likely host Heath again in the first round of the playoffs at Perdue Field.

Like the 99-cent menu at Wendy's (sponsor plug), here are some more juicy nuggets to munch on:

• Trigg County only outgained Heath 390-365.  In the second half, Trigg outgained the Pirates 202-130.
• Scotty Mayes rushed for 197 yards on just 11 carries -- which is 17.9 yards a carry.  Brandon Bridges added 145 yards on 15 carries -- with many of those coming on an 86-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter that sealed the win.
• Donald Bush was 4-of-8 passing for 46 yards.  He has thrown 139 consecutive completions without an interception dating back to last year.
• Heath's Chad Wright rushed for 247 yards on 29 carries and two touchdowns.  He has been playing with a separated left shoulder suffered earlier this year.  Wright's 247 yards is the most allowed by the Wildcats since Caldwell County's Kent Wells rushed for 255 yards on 20 carries in 2002.  Caldwell won the game 56-27.  Wright is the first opponent to rush for over 200 yards at Perdue Field since Fulton County's Byron Tucker ran for 219 yards on 24 carries in the Pilots' 27-26 playoff win in 1996.
• Since the KHSAA expanded to the 11-week schedule to play 10 games in 2000, Trigg County has won all eight games in the first game after an open week.
• John Reinick is 28-of-30 on extra point kicks this year.  He didn't have a single punt against Heath.
• Antonio Grubbs returned the opening kickoff of the game 72 yards for a touchdown.  The last Wildcat to accomplish that was Bobby Acree, who took the opening kick back for a school-record 99 yards against Webster County in 2002.
• Trigg County has beaten Heath nine straight times dating back to 1988 and leads the all-time series 13-9.

Trigg County and Heath meet for the 22nd time tonght at Perdue Field in a 7:30pm district contest.  It is homecoming night for the Wildcats.

Trigg County is 5-0 and looking for their first 6-0 start since the 2000 season.  Heath is 2-3 and like Trigg County, had an open week last week.

Trigg County put up a valiant effort but fell to Christian County 2-0 on Senior Night at the Complex.

Playing without their three leading scorers -- two to season-ending injury and one to suspension -- Trigg County's defense played well, forcing a scoreless tie at halftime.

Christian County (11-4) scored on a penalty kick in the 65th minute and added an insurance goal ten minutes later.

"We have to play mistake free to keep ourselves in games, and that's just too much to ask of a young squad," Lady Wildcat head coach Mike Smith said.  "I hate that the girls have to keep overcoming so much adversity, but that's just how it is right now.  Hopefully we can stay positive and keep working."

Danni Romero had eight saves for the Lady Wildcats, who only managed six shots.

In the JV game, Danielle Adams and Maya Bridges each scored goals to lead Trigg to a 5-1 win.

Trigg County is now 5-6-3 and have lost four of their last five games.  They will close out the regular season on the road Saturday at University Heights in an 11:30am game in Hopkinsville.

Trigg County was victorious on Senior Night, beating Graves County 26-24, 25-19.

Before the game, Mariah Calhoun, Alyssa Weber and Kalesha Williams were honored as seniors.

In the game, Molly Thompson had 4 kills, 3 aces and 1 assist.  Kalesha Williams had 5 kills, 2 blocks and 1 ace, Casey Banister had 6 assists and 1 ace, Samantha Harper had 7 assists and 1 ace, and Alyssa Weber had 2 kills and 3 blocks.

Trigg County's JV won 21-17, 21-12.

St. Mary 2 Trigg County 1

Inconsistent play coming down the stretch is driving Trigg County boys' soccer coach Josh Nichols crazy.

Trigg County lost to St. Mary 2-1 Thursday -- a game they know they should have won.  Trigg County is 6-6-3, but have a record of 1-2-1 over the last four games.  They play at University Heights Saturday before their district tournament opener Monday against Lyon County.

"They just outplayed us and wanted it more.  We aren't a good enough team to win games in which we don't play hard.  We should have learned that by now, but I guess we haven't," a frustrated Nichols said afterward.

Jeremy Stamps scored a goal to give Trigg a 1-0 lead.  St. Mary (3-13-1) tied the game heading into intermission and scored the game-winner early in the second half.

"They scored early in the second half, and even though we dominated possession in the second half, we didn't generate very many good chances.  They packed everyone into the box on defense after they took the lead and we couldn't get through," Nichols said.

The JV did pick up a 3-1 win.

The Wildcats will close out the regular season Saturday at University Heights in a 3pm game in Hopkinsville.

Kentucky at South Carolina

Kentucky could become the first football team in the nation to become bowl eligible tonight when they play South Carolina in Columbia.

A win would make the Wildcats 6-0 for the first time since the 1950 Sugar Bowl Champion squad coached by Bear Bryant.

South Carolina leads the all-time series 11-6-1, including last year's 24-17 win in Lexington.  UK's last win at Williams-Brice Stadium came in 1999.

Airtime tonight begins at 5pm with the pregame show on WKDZ AM-1110.  The news will air as normal at 5pm on WKDZ-FM, which begins UK coverage at 6pm.  Kickoff is 6:30pm, and the game will be carried on TV on the four-letter network.

VOLLEYBALL - Graves County at Trigg County (JV at 6pm, varsity around 7:30pm).  Trigg County snapped a six-game losing streak Tuesday and look to head into a weekend tournament in Tennessee with some momentum.  That could come in the form of Graves, who is just 5-19 this year.  Senior Night will be held prior to the varsity game.

BOYS SOCCER - Trigg County at St. Mary (Varsity at 5:30pm).  Trigg County is looking to go two games over .500 heading into Saturday's regular season finale at University Heights.  St. Mary is just 2-13-1 on the season and leads the all-time series with Trigg 5-4-1.

FRESHMAN FOOTBALL - Trigg County at Christian County, 6pm.

Kyle Allen: Titan Shadow

Kyle Allen got a chance to do something not many of us have had to opportunity to do.

Kyle got the chance to serve as a shadow Tuesday to Titans play-by-play announcer Mike Keith.  Allen, a 2007 graduate of Trigg County High, was required to shadow someone in the broadcasting field as a class assignment at Western Kentucky University.  Here is the letter he wrote to Keith.

Dear Mr. Keith:

As a student at the Western Kentucky University College of Broadcasting,I have been assigned to shadow someone that is similar in the type of field that I desire to enter into. I believe this to be a wonderful opportunity for me to get a visual glance at how my career path would look on a daily basis.

To fulfill this requirement, I have thus begun to scan networks in search of an opportunity to shadow a member of a radio news team.

Since the Titans moved to Nashville, I have merely been amazed at how you can bring the game to life and provide so much enthusiasm to a Titans broadcast.

I have listened intently to some of the most famous calls that any sports fan has had the privilege of listening to. From the inaugural game in 1999 against the Cincinnati Bengals, the Super Bowl stretch by Kevin Dyson, the weekly heroics by Steve McNair, all the way to miraculous play of Vince Young and the turnaround of the 06' season.

My dad and I have held season tickets since Adelphia Coliseum opened in 1999 and continue to attend games regularly at what is now known as LP Field.

This would be a wonderful opportunity for me to not only fulfill requirements in a class, but to also get an up-close look at how the best play-by-play analyst in the game today prepares for a broadcast.

However, I realize that your schedule is very complex and it would be asking a lot for this type of thing to take place. So I simply ask for your consideration in making this possible.

My requirement is simply to shadow someone for a portion of a day to get a feel of what it is like to be in this field. I truly do thank-you for taking time out of your busy day to read this message and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

As a result, Keith, admitting that he and the Titans don't normally oblige these type of requests, agreed to allow Kyle to shadow him Tuesday.

Kyle met Keith at the Titans' practice facility and then went to the home of a Titan for an interview for the TV Show All-Access.  He then finished his day in Brentwood with Keith at the Jeff Fisher Show, which aired on WKDZ Tuesday night.

We'll be waiting to see what kind of grade Kyle gets for this.
