Trigg County High School senior Tyler Mitchell is tied for 58th place after the first round of the U.S. Junior Amateur at Boone Valley Golf Club in Augusta, Missouri.
Mitchell shot a 4-over-par 75 Monday in the first of a two-round qualifier that trims the field to the top 64 golfers. From there, the golfers take part in match play rounds to eventually determine the winner.
His round Monday consisted of pars on the first three holes. Mitchell had back-to-back bogeys on the par-4 fourth and fifth holes. He finished out his front-nine with four straight pars to go out with a 38. Mitchell had seven pars and two bogeys on the back-nine, including one on hole #18, to come in at 37.
Mitchell is one of 18 golfers tied in 58th place, with 16 more golfers tied at 3-under par. If he can survive Tuesday's final round of stroke play, he will advance to match play that begins Wednesday and culminates with the championship Saturday.
Atlanta's James White birdied six holes and bogeyed two to sit atop the leaderboard after the first day at 5-under. China's Mu Hu is one of three golfers at 2-under and one of six golfers who broke par on the day.
