Trigg County plays the final game of the first round of the Second Region Basketball Tournament tonight at Hopkinsville High School.
The Wildcats (10-18) play 7th District runner-up Madisonville (21-9) at 7:30pm. Trigg County is making their fifth straight appearance in the region tournament -- their longest streak since 1974-81.
Trigg County must find a way to slow down the Maroons, who average 71 points a game. The Wildcats are averaging just 54 points a game on offense. Trigg must also find a way to contain Madisonville junior center Darnell Davis, who at 6-4 will be the tallest player on the floor. Jonathon Davis and Tyler Allison are also among the leading scorers for the Maroons.
Madisonville leads the all-time series with Trigg 26-10, including a 3-1 record against the Wildcats in the region tournament.
The last time the schools met in the region tournament was in 1988 at Hopkinsville -- a game the Travis Ford led Maroons won easily 86-45. Madisonville also beat Trigg 75-66 in the 1979 first round and 55-29 in the 1949 first round.
Trigg's lone win against Madisonville in the region tournament came in the 1981 first round, a 69-61 win.
The last time the teams played was in the 2003 Marshall County Holiday Classic, which the Wildcats won 69-64.
