For once, Trigg County beat Webster County at the buzzer.
Jalik Alexander scored off an inbounds pass with 0.7 seconds left in overtime to lift the Wildcats to a 55-53 win and avoid the school's first six-game losing streak in seven years.
Webster County practically gave the game away by missing 9-of-10 free throws in the final minute of regulation. Trailing 46-43 with four seconds left, Jonathon King rebounded a missed free throw and dribbled to the other end where he buried a 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the game to overtime.
Trigg led 51-47 before Webster County mounted a comeback and tied the game at 53. Alexander's winning shot came after Trigg had a shot blocked out of bounds under their own basket.
King led the Wildcats with 20 points, while Rodney Davis added 19 points. Zack Wright scored six rebounds, grabbed seven rebounds, and dished out four assists. Ryan Eubanks scored six points and had eight rebounds, and Alexander scored four points.
James Tapp led Webster County (12-10) with 14 points.
The dual buzzer-beaters for Trigg was a small dose of payback for three buzzer-beating losses suffered to Webster County in the past 12 years.
Shuan Townsend nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer in the 1995 Second Region Tournament to send the game to overtime, where Webster beat Trigg 84-76 in double-overtime.
In 2002, Cory Patmore rebounded a missed shot and made a desperation 3-pointer to send the game to overtime where Webster beat Trigg 70-67 in the championship game of the John Robinson Classic at Lone Oak.
Two years ago, LaBradford Rollins banked in a half-court shot at the buzzer to give the Trojans a 70-67 win at Wildcat Gym.
For Trigg County, it was their first overtime win since beating Cairo, Ill. 87-79 in the 2004 Marion Round Robin Tournament and their first OT win on their home floor since a 74-72 win over Lyon County in 2003.
Trigg County is now 7-14 and will host University Heights Saturday in the first regular season game between the two schools since 1986.
