Trigg County will try and pull off the big upset tonight when they play top seed Lyon County in the first round of the Fifth District Tournament at Livingston Central High School.
The Lady Wildcats enter play tonight as the fourth seed with a record of 6-21. They were 1-5 in district play, tying Crittenden County for third place. Crittenden won a coin toss for the third seed and will play Livingston Central at 7:30pm.
Trigg County lost to Lyon County 59-37 Dec. 15 in Eddyville and 71-31 Jan. 12 in Cadiz.
Trigg has won five of their last eight first round games in district tournament play, but haven’t advanced to the district championship game since 1996.
The Lady Wildcats are led by Laquisha Boyd’s 14.8 points and 9.0 rebounds a game. Boyd is the only senior on the Lady Wildcat roster. Sophomore Janada Acree joins Boyd in double figures at 10.5 points a game and 11.7 rebounds.
After that, the scoring drops down to freshman Brooke Allen (3.0 ppg.) and 8th grader Brooke Kearney (2.9 ppg.).
The Lady Wildcats will be without the services of junior Kalesha Williams (shoulder) and two 8th graders who apparently weren’t added to the team roster in time to be included in district play.
Lyon County is 17-10 but have won just two of seven games since advancing to the semifinals of the All-A Classic State Tournament.
The Lady Lyons are led by 6-1 senior Allison Mussato, who is averaging 17.6 points, 7.3 rebounds, and is shooting 58-percent from the field. Mussato has signed to play basketball at Lindsey Wilson College.
Senior guard Olivia Akridge averages 11.3 points and 7.2 assists per game.
Junior Abbey McLeod leads the team in rebounds at 7.8 per game, while junior Hayley Parrent averages 14.6 points a game and shoots 40-percent from behind the 3-point arc.
Lyon County leads the all-time series with Trigg 48-32, including a 5-2 mark against them in district tournament games.
Tipoff tonight is set for 6pm.
In the second game, Livingston Central (17-11) will play Crittenden County (6-19) at 7:30pm.
Last year, Livingston beat Crittenden 49-44 in the first round of the district tournament in Marion, but Crittenden has won six of the nine career meetings in the district tournament.
This year, Livingston beat the Lady Rockets 65-34 Dec. 15 in Smithland and 56-30 Jan. 12 in Marion.
The Lady Cardinals, who haven’t won a district title since 1986, are led by junior Kayla Shull, who is scoring 13 points a game, grabbing 7.6 rebounds, and shooting 51-percent from the field.
Livingston’s roster features four juniors and six sophomores. One of those juniors is Lauren Whetstone, an all-district performer last year, who leads the team with 4.3 assists per game.
Livingston Central has assured themselves of the school’s first winning record since 1998.
The game also features the district’s two longest tenured coaches in Livingston’s Kris Simmons and Crittenden’s Shannon Hodge.
Simmons is 62-93 in six seasons on the Lady Cardinal bench, while Hodge, who is trying to coach Crittenden to the school’s first district title in 23 years, is 166-207 in 14 years as Lady Rocket head coach.
The Tuesday winners will play in Friday’s championship game at 7pm.
Tickets are $5 for everyone.
