Hopkinsville resident Larry Jones will be keeping an eye on his horse Hard Spun Monday in the Southwest Stakes for 3-year-olds at Oaklawn Park.
Jones is the trainer of Hard Spun, owned by Fox Hill Farms in New York, who is being compared to Smarty Jones, the 2004 Kentucky Derby winner.
Jones is a former commercial farmer in Christian County who grew corn, tobacco and soy beans as well as raised cattle and hogs. One web site says he is from Hopkinsville. Another says he lives in Henderson, which makes sense with Ellis Park being nearby.
