Davis, King among state leaders

Trigg County's Rodney Davis is among the state leaders in scoring, according to statistics released by the KHSAA.

Davis' scoring average of 25.5 points in 11 games ranks seventh in the state.  Caldwell County's Matt Fraelix leads the state in scoring at 33.8 points a game.

Fraleix also ranks first in 3-pointers made per game (4.2), 21st in field goal percentage (59%), and 4th in free throw percentage (83.8%).

Davis also ranks 16th in free throw percentage (78.8%), while teammate Jonathon King ranks 21sst in 3-pointers made per game (2.5).

Diamond Club auction to be Saturday

The Trigg County Diamond Club and Lakeland Jamboree have teamed up for a fund-raiser auction to be held Saturday night at 6pm.

Several businesses have donated items to be auctioned off Saturday.  If you'd like to donate an item to the auction or make a monetary donation to the Diamond Club, contact David Fourqurean at 522-3269 or Cindy Greenman at 887-8874.

Lawson leaving Marshall County

Marshall County is looking for a new football coach as Mike Lawson is leaving for the coaching job at Central Hardin.

Lawson, who was 18-14 in three years at Marshall County and 31-8 in three seasons at Owensboro Catholic before that, told the Elizabethtown News-Enterprise that the new gig was closer to where he went to school (Meade County) and closer to his parents.

The Paducah Sun said Adam Shelton, son of former Marshall County AD Jim Shelton, could be considered a favorite for the coaching position, which is also likely to draw a lot of regional interest with the school planning on building a new practice facility.

UK women at Alabama

WKDZ once again has the Kentucky women on the air tonight as they travel to Alabama to face the Lady Tide (or is it Tidettes?)

Kentucky leads the all-time series with Alabama 16-15 and have won four of the last five in the series.

Midcats play for the district title tonight

The Trigg County Midcats will play for the middle school district championship tonight at Livingston Central Middle School.

The Midcats will play top-seed Lyon County at 7pm.  The game is at Livingston Central Middle, which is located on U.S. 60 in Burna.

TCHS football banquet Sunday

The Trigg County Wildcat football banquet will be Sunday afternoon at 1pm at the TCHS cafeteria.  The awards ceremoney will follow at 2pm in the high school little theater.  Cost of the meal is $6.

Saturday morning playback

This week's Saturday morning playback is Trigg County's 50-47 win over Livingston Central from Tuesday night.

The game can be heard Saturday morning at 9am on Newstalk 1110 WKDZ.

Kentucky vs. Auburn

Kentucky returns to action tonight when they play Auburn at Rupp Arena.

The Wildcats lead the all-time series with Auburn 80-17 and have won seven straight against the Tigers dating back to 2000.  UK is 41-2 vs. Auburn in Lexington, losing only in 1983 and 1988.

Airtime tonight on 106.5 WKDZ is 6pm after the local news.

Trigg County 50 Livingston Central 47

Trigg County overcame questionable shot selection and even worse free throw shooting in the second half to beat Livingston Central 50-47 Tuesday night at Smithland.  The win was Trigg's 14th straight over Livingston dating back to 2001.

Trigg led 25-11 in the second quarter before watching Livingston go on a 17-0 run in the second and third quarters.  Trigg responded with a 7-0 run of their own early in the fourth quarter and held off the Cardinals despite some quick shots and 9-of-16 free throw shooting for the night.

Rodney Davis led Trigg County with 29 points and seven rebounds, while Jonathon King added 13 points and four boards.

Justin Melendez was the only player in double figures for Livingston with 19 points.

The win keeps Trigg's hopes alive for the top seed in the district tournament, which they can claim with wins over Lyon County and Crittenden County in the coming week.

Trigg County is now 5-9 overall and 2-2 in the district.  Livingston drops to 6-7 overall and 3-2 in the district.

Livingston Central 73 Trigg County 30

Trigg County had a past history of playing Livingston Central close in Smithland.  It didn't happen last night as Livingston Central beat the Lady Wildcats 73-30.

Livingston led 21-10 after one quarter and 41-16 at halftime to take control of this one early.

Livingston's zone defense symied Trigg most of the night, holding them to 21-percent shooting from the field and outrebounding them 37-33.

Laquisha Boyd led Trigg County with eight points and seven rebounds, while Janada Acree added six points and seven rebounds.

12 different player scored for Livingston Central, but Kayla Schull was the only player in double figures with 22 points and 10 rebounds.

Trigg County falls to 4-11 with the loss and 1-3 in district play, while Livingston Central improves to 9-6 overall and 3-2 in district play.

Trigg County returns to action Friday at home against Lyon County in the second game of a boys/girls doubleheader.

Midcats advance to championship game

After losing to Crittenden County twice during the regular season, Trigg County turned the tables and knocked off the Rockets 42-28 in the 8th grade middle school basketball tournament Tuesday night at Livingston Central Middle School.

Trigg County will now play Lyon County in Thursday night's district championship game.

Trigg held a 21-20 lead at halftime before running away with the win in the second half.

Devon Wharton led Trigg County with 14 points, while Chris McKenzie added 13.  R.J. Sholar and Alonzo Lewis each scored six points for the Midcats.

Thursday's title game begins at 7pm at Livingston Central Middle School.

Lady Midcat rally falls short

Trigg County saw their middle school girls basketball season come to an end Monday night with a 50-36 loss to Livingston Central in the 8th grade district tournament at Burna.

Brooke Kearney had 13 to points to lead Trigg County, while Elysia Brown scored 11 points.

After a slow start to the season, Trigg County rebounded well to finish with a 9-11 record.

Louisville names Kragthorpe new coach

As was reported Monday afternoon on Bluegrasspreps.com, Tulsa head coach Steve Kragthorpe has been named the new head coach of Louisville. Kragthorpe was 29-22 in four years at Tulsa, rebuilding a program that had won two games in the two years before his arrival.

Kragthorpe replaces Bobby Petrino, who left the Cards for the NFL's Atlanta Falcons Monday.

Kragthorpe's first priority is to work on keeping Louisville's recruiting class from looking elsewhere, including Matt Simms, the son of former NFL quarterback Phil Simms, who announced Monday he was not going to Louisville in the wake of Petrino leaving UL.

Trigg County at Livingston Central

Trigg County begins their second and final trip through the district schedule tonight when they play a district doubleheader at Livingston Central.

The Lady Wildcats play the first game in a 6pm matchup with the Lady Cardinals.

Trigg County is 4-10 overall and 1-2 in the district.  The Lady Wildcats beat Fulton City 58-49 Saturday night.

Livingston Central is 8-6 overall and 2-2 in district play.  The Lady Cardinals last played Friday night, losing to Lyon County 45-33.

These teams met Dec. 12 with Livingston Central winning 73-40.  The Lady Cardinals jumped out to a 28-6 lead after one quarter and forced 44 Trigg turnovers, which will obviously be a key for the Lady Wildcats once again tonight.

Livingston Central leads the all-time series with Trigg 40-35 and have won five straight games over the Lady Wildcats.

In the 7:30pm nightcap, Trigg County faces a nearly must-win situation if they want to keep their chances at the district's top seed alive.

The Wildcats are 4-9 overall and 1-2 in district play, while Livingston Central is 6-6 overall and leading the district with a 3-1 record.  Their only loss came to the Wildcats 69-55 Dec. 12 in Cadiz.

Trigg trailed 32-30 at halftime before outscoring the Cardinals 23-13 in the third quarter.  Trigg was helped by 57-percent shooting from the field as Rodney Davis led the way with 28 points.

Livingston Central has won two straight games, including a 68-61 win over Fort Campbell Monday night.

Trigg County leads the all-time series with the Cardinals 58-49 and have won 13 straight games over Livingston dating back to 2001.

No Petrino, No Matt Simms

The fallout of Bobby Petrino leaving Louisville has already begun as Matt Simms, son of former Morehead State and NY GIant quarterback Phil Simms, has announced he is not going to Louisville, saying his decision is directly related to Bobby Petrino leaving UL for the Atlanta Falcons.

Simms finished his senior season with 1,981 passing yards and 18 touchdowns.  In three years as a starter, Simms threw for more than 60 touchdowns and 6,000 yards.

NASCAR to increase chase by two

Sources are reporting that NASCAR will increase the field for the Nextel Chase for the Cup from 10 to 12 drivers. Regardless of how many points behind the leader they are, the top 12 drivers will make the chase.

In 2005, it would have included Jeff Gordon.  Last year, it would have included Tony Stewart.

In another good move, NASCAR is awarding more points for winning a race, thus rewarding drivers who can win a race over those who can finish ninth all season long without visiting Victory Lane.

Petrino to the Falcons

A year after signing a 10-year, $25-million contract earlier this year, Bobby Petrino is bolting Louisville for the NFL and the Atlanta Falcons.  It's hard to turn down the money the Falcons threw his way.  And now, several questions remain to be answered.

Middle School Tournament begins tonight

The 8th grade middle school district tournament begins tonight at Livingston Central Middle School in Burna. 

The Trigg girls are the fourth seed in the tournament and will play top seed Livingston Central tonight at 5:30pm.  In the boys tournament, the top seed is Lyon County and will play Livingston Central, the fourth seed, at 7pm.

On Tuesday, Crittenden County's girls, the two seed, will play three-seed Lyon County at 5:30pm.

At 7pm, the Trigg boys (the three seed) will play two-seed Crittenden County.

The girls' championship will be Thursday at 5:30pm, while the boys will play at 7pm.

Remember, the tournament is not at Livingston Central High School, but instead at the middle school in Burna.  Go into Smithland on KY 453 and turn right on U.S. 60 at the stoplight.  Burna is just east of Smithland.

College team snaps 207-game losing streak

When Lyon County beat Trigg County earlier this year, they snapped a 35-game losing streak that dated back two seasons.

The most consecutive games Trigg County has lost was 12 in 1985-86 and 1955-56.

Caltech had a losing streak that dwarfed all of the above.  The California school beat Bard College of New York 81-52 Saturday night, ending a 207-game losing streak that dated back to 1996.

The Trigg County Diamond Club is partnering with Minit Mart to have a Pizza Blitz Monday.

Between 4pm-6pm, large one topping pizzas from Godfather's Pizza at Minit Mart will be $6.  When you buy the pizza or pizzas, mention Trigg County baseball and a portion of the sale will go to the Diamond Club, which supports TCHS baseball.

You can order between 4-6pm and pick up the pizza later in the evening, with a portion still going to the Diamond Club if you mention TCHS baseball.

Trigg County 58 Fulton City 49

Trigg County picked up a 58-49 win at Fulton City Saturday night in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

The Lady Wildcats led most of the way, jumping out to a 23-10 lead after one quarter.  Trigg led 31-26 at halftime and 43-38 after three quarters.

Laquisha Boyd once again led Trigg County in scoring with 23 points, while Janada Acree added 15, and Melanie Want scored 14 points.  Also, Brooke Kearney scored four and Brooke Allen scored two.

Ashley Williams hit 9-of-10 free throws and finished with 18 points to lead Fulton City (0-9).

Trigg County didn't help themselves at the free throw line, hitting just 14-of-35.  Fulton City hit 17-of-29.

The Lady Wildcats improve to 4-10 and will play at Livingston Central Tuesday.

Trigg County at Fulton City

Trigg County looks to snap a two-game losing streak when they make the loooooong road trip to Fulton City in the first-ever matchup between the schools.

The Lady Wildcats are 3-10 on the season, while Fulton City enters tonight's game with a 0-8 record.

According to the KHSAA website, tonight's tip-off is set for 5pm, although it's unknown if that is for the varsity or the JV game.

Directions to Fulton City High School (700 Stephen Beale Drive):

• Take the Purchase Parkway south to the last exit before going into Tennessee (Exit #1 - U.S. 51).
• Take U.S. 51 South (Nolan Drive) until the road splits into a 'T' intersection with U.S. 45.  Go straight onto Stephen Beale Drive.  Drive a bit and you will see the school.
• Good luck.

Hopkins County Central 54 Trigg County 41

Hopkins Central used a 9-0 second quarter run to break a 20-20 tie and take control of the game, winning 54-41 over Trigg County Friday at Wildcat Gym.

Trigg led 16-14 after the first quarter but went cold the rest of the way, getting outscored 15-5 in the second quarter, 11-10 in the third quarter, and 14-10 in the fourth quarter.

Trigg shot just 30-percent from the field and were outrebounded 36-22.

Rodney Davis led Trigg County with 20 points, while Jonathon King scored 15.  Jalik Alexander scored four, and Zack Wright added two points.

Chris Evans led Hopkins County Central (9-8) with 17 points, while sophomore Chuck Jones scored 13 points -- all in the first half.

The Storm snapped a three-game losing streak to Trigg that dated back to 1999 and won in Cadiz for the first time since 1998.

Trigg County falls to 4-9 and will play at Livingston Central Tuesday.

Lady Midcats fall in season finale

The Lady Midcats fell to North Drive 42-37 in their regular season finale Thursday night at Midcat Gym.

Trigg led 22-20 at halftime, but North Drive led 36-28 after three quarters.  Trigg cut the lead to three points in the final minute but couldn't get over the hump.

Elysia Brown led Trigg with 13 points, while Brooke Kearney added seven points.  Khadjah Grubbs scored six points, Ellie Jolly scored four, and Morgan Parker had four points and six rebounds.

Trigg County will play Monday in the middle school district tournament Monday in Burna.

Hopkins County Central at Trigg County

Trigg County opens the 2007 portion of their basketball schedule tonight when they host Hopkins County Central at Wildcat Gym.

The Wildcats are 4-8 on the season, coming off a pair of wins Saturday in the Marion Holiday Tournament.

Hopkins Central is 8-8 and come to Wildcat Gym winners of four straight games, including a 70-63 win over Hopkinsville Tuesday.  6-7 sophomore Chuck Jones scored 21 points in the win, while Chris Evans added 14.

Trigg has won three straight games against the Storm and lead the all-time series 5-2.  HCC last beat Trigg in 1999.

Airtime tonight on 106.5 WKDZ is 7:03pm.

Midcats fall to North Drive

Trigg County wrapped up their middle school basketball regular season with a 66-38 loss to North Drive Middle Thursday night at Midcat Gym.

Trigg led 31-24 at halftime but were outscored 42-7 in the second half.

Alonzo Lewis led the Midcats with 14 points, and Chris McKenzie added 12.

Veontae Lewis had 12 points for North Drive.

The Midcats return to action Tuesday in the middle school district tournament at Livingston Central Middle School.

Murray awarded ABA franchise

The American Basketball Association has added Murray to its growing list of 2007 expansion teams that will begin play in November. 

The team, to be called the Colonels, is owned by businessman Steve Van Waes and will be coached by Kevin Waters.

Waters was an assistant women's coach at Murray State University and has served as special assistant coach of Kennesaw State University, assistant men's coach at Edward Waters College.

Waters played his college ball at Fisk University.

Midcats wrap up regular season tonight

The 8th grade Midcats wrap up their regular season tonight at Midcat Gym against the teams from North Drive Middle School.

The Trigg girls will play North Drive at 5:30pm while the boys game will follow at 6:30pm.

Both Trigg teams will participate in the 8th grade district tournament next week at Livingston Central Middle School in Burna.

UK women's hoops back on WKDZ

The UK women put their seven-game winning streak on the line tonight when they host South Carolina (10-4) at Memorial Coliseum.

Kentucky (11-3) is off to their best start in 16 years and have won seven straight games by 26 points or more.

UK freshman and former Christian County standout Lydia Watkins is averaging 3.5 points and 4.5 rebounds a game.

Tonight's game will be carried on WKDZ 106.5 FM at 6pm.

Vince Young: NFL Offensive Player of the Year

The third overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft is now the top overall selection for the NFL's best offensive rookie honor.

The NFL named Titans rookie quarterback Vince Young the Offensive Rookie of the Year on Wednesday in a vote decided by the Associated Press. Young received 23 votes from a nationwide panel of 50 sports writers and broadcasters who cover the league.

Young started 13 of the 15 games he played in during 2006 and completed 184-of-357 pass attempts for 2,199 yards. Young also tossed 12 touchdowns, rushed for seven, and completed 22 passes for 20 yards or more while leading the Titans to four fourth-quarter comeback victories.

The award marked the fifth top rookie award for the Titans-Oilers franchise. Besides Young, both running backs Earl Campbell and Eddie George won the award in 1978 and 1996, respectively. Linebacker Robert Brazile and defensive end Jevon Kearse were each named Defensive Rookie of the Year in 1975 and 1999.

Surprisingly, Reggie Bush did not finish second to Young.  Instead, Young beat New Orleans wide receiver Marques Colston and Jacksonville running back Maurice Jones-Drew, who had nine apiece.  Next was San Diego tackle Marcus McNeill (6), and then Bush (3).

University Heights 47 Trigg County 44

Jasmine Coleman hit 5-of-6 free throws in the fourth quarter as University Heights held off Trigg County 47-44 Tuesday night at Wildcat Gym.

Sara Allen hit consecutive 3-pointers to start the second half as UHA erased a five-point deficit.  Allen finished with 11 points.  Coleman added 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Elizabeth Bressler led the Lady Blazers with 14 points.

Trigg County trailed 9-6 after one quarter, but outscored UHA 16-8 in the second quarter.  UHA outscored Trigg 16-7 in the third quarter to lead 33-29 entering the fourth quarter.

Janada Acree led Trigg County with 14 points and 18 rebounds, while Laquisha Boyd added 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Trigg also got strong play from their bench as Dori Sheehan scored six points and added nine rebounds, while Brooke Kearney had two points and three rebounds.

Kearney was one of six middle schoolers who dressed for the game due to the absence of starting point guard Audrey Futrell and reserve guard Kelci Winn, who were both out sick.

Trigg County shot just 27-percent from the field (18/67), while UHA shot just 28-percent (18/63).  Trigg won the battle of the boards 57-38.

Titans have 19th pick in 2007 NFL Draft

Tennessee will have the 19th pick in this year's NFL Draft, thanks to their six-game winning streak and 8-8 record.

Oakland will have the #1 pick in the draft, followed by Detroit at #2.  Cleveland and Tampa Bay will flip a coin to determine who gets the third and fourth picks, while Arizona gets the fifth pick.

Tennessee also gets an additional fourth round pick and two additional picks in the sixth round as they look to fill their needs.

Another Bowden on the hot seat?

After Clemson's loss to Kentucky in the Music City Bowl last week, several people are calling for the head of Tiger head coach following their uninspired effort in the loss, according to John Clay of the Lexington Herald-Leader.

University Heights at Trigg County

Trigg County opens the 2007 portion of their basketball schedule tonight when the Lady Wildcats host University Heights at Wildcat Gym.

Trigg enters the game at 3-9 and is coming off a 1-2 trip to McLean County last week.

UHA is 6-5 on the season and is shooting for their first winning season since 1983-84, which was their last season of playing basketball during a program hiatus that lasted until 2003.

UHA finished fourth in Trigg County's 12 Games of Christmas before Christmas and was 2-1 at the Murray Lady Tiger Classic last week, beating Providence and Reidland and losing to a 4-6 Carlisle County team.

Trigg County leads the all-time series with UHA 10-6, which includes two forfeited wins from last year.

Lady Wildcats get milestone victory

Trigg County's win over Cannelton, Ind. last week in the McLean County RC Cola Classic was historical on several fronts.

First off, it was Trigg's first-ever win in their first-ever game against a school from Indiana.

However, it was also the 300th career win in the 33-year history of the TCHS girls basketball program.  Trigg County has a career record of 300-483.

Orange Bowl: Louisville vs. Wake Forest

Tennessee's opponents for the 2007 season have been announced, with the dates and times to come later from the NFL.  Players like Peyton Manning, Ladanian Tomlinson, Randy Moss, and Michael Vick are among the players coming to LP Field next year.

Fisher to return as Titans coach in 2007

Tennessee has picked up the option on head coach Jeff Fisher for the 2007 season and look to lock him up long term.

With six offensive starters in either their first or second seasons, the Titans struggled early but won six straight wins and would have made the playoffs had they beat New England Sunday.

Fisher, who is 110-97 in 12 years as the head coach of the Titans/Oilers, has led the Titans to four playoff appearances, two AFC Championship Games, two division titles and a berth in Super Bowl XXXIV in the last eight seasons.

With coaching openings in Atlanta and Arizona and another expected in Pittsburgh, locking up Fisher is a good move for the Titans.
