Trigg vs. Fort Campbell playoff info

Tickets for Friday's playoff game at Fort Campbell will be six dollars each and will be available at Fryar Stadium.  There will be no advance ticket sales.

According to Fort Campbell, you can enter through Gates #3 and #4 to get on post.

Drivers entering the post will need to bring a valid driver's license, vaild proof of vehicle registration, and a current insurance card.

Passengers in the vehicle will need to provide a picture ID.  Past experiences I've witnessed indicate pre-teen children don't need a picture ID but will need to be accounted for at the gate.

KIckoff for Friday's football game is 7:30pm.

Final regular season football polls

Trigg County is not ranked in the final regular season Associated Press Poll and the Bluegrasspreps.com Poll.

Bluegrasspreps.com has also released their annual playoff preview for each class, with predictions on who will advance from each region and championship picks.

Playoffs what if...

The new football playoff format has teams playing district opponents the first two rounds to determine a true district champion before playing teams from the adjoining district in the third round.

The last three years, Trigg County has been eliminated from the playoffs by Owensboro Catholic in the second round in Owensboro.

If the old format was in effect this year, Trigg would have traveled to Owensboro Catholic in the first round.  Had they won, they would have likely played Caldwell County in the second round.

This year, they play at Fort Campbell in the first round with a potential trip to Caldwell County in the second round.

Cunningham second at Meet of Champions

Trigg County competed in the Meet of Champions over the weekend at Masterson Park in Lexington.

Trigg fifth grader Romaine Cunningham finished second out of nearly 400 runners in the 6th grade and under race, finishing the 3K race in a time of 12:01.  Walker Owens of College View Middle School in Owensboro won the race in 11:40.

Jayven Jones finished 132nd (13:58), Corbin Estes 185th (14:33), Caleb McIntosh 319th (16:13), and Alex Peacock 324th (16:13).

In the girls' 6th grade and under race, Alex Olin finished 84th (14:44), followed by X'zaxhea Mayes 129th (15:21), Macey King 169th (15:33), and Alex Carr 206th (16:34).

In the middle school girls race, Lynease Byers was 38th (17:09), Shakandace Malone 68th (17:49), and Kaitlynn Schiro 285th (24:49).

In the boys' middle school race, Jakelzie Martin was 171st (17:08), Landon Sumner 285th (18:47), Hunter Allen 303rd (19:06), and Matthew Brokering 304th (19:08).

In the boys' varsity race, Jay Jolly finished 33rd in the Class A division, completing the 3.1-mile course in a time of 19:38.  Zeke Wright was 66th in 22:14, and Grady Cofield was 76th in 24:20.

Rachel Cronin was Trigg County's only runner in the girls' varsity race, finishing 59th in 29:38.

Trigg County returns to action Saturday in the Region I Meet at Murray High School.

   

Trigg County 23 Lone Oak 7

Trigg County finished the regular season with an 8-2 record overall and 5-2 in district play with a 23-7 win over Lone Oak Friday.  The game was played in monsoon-like conditions, and less than 20 fans braved the windy, rainy, cold conditions to watch the game on the Trigg County side. 

• Sophomore Brandon Bridges rushed for 92 yards on nine carries and topped the 1,000-yard mark for the season, becoming the first Wildcat sophomore since Kelvin Grubbs in 1995 to top 1,000 yards in a season.
• Sophomore Dustin Calhoun rushed for a career-high 134 yards on 15 carries.
• The Wildcats had 290 rushing yards on 42 carries.  Lone Oak had 56 yards on 32 carries.
• The Wildcats fumbled the football eight times and lost four.
• Lone Oak was 1-for-13 on third down conversions.
• Lone Oak quarterback Corey Robinson threw for 103 yards on 8-of-23 passing -- which was 184 yards below his season average.
• Trigg County has won six straight against Lone Oak and 17 of 19 in the series.

The Wildcats will play at Fort Campbell next week in the first round of the playoffs.  The other playoff game has Webster County visiting Caldwell County.

• Trigg County leads the all-time series 16-2, including the last five in a row by an average score of 41-7.  With Lone Oak moving up in class next year, that may be one of the reasons why Lone Oak refuses to schedule Trigg County next year.
• Lone Oak's last win over Trigg County came in 1992, a 17-10 win at Perdue Field. 
• In Trigg County's 23-6 win over Lone Oak in 1993, the game was played in sleet and snow in the first half and finished the game with snow covering the field.
• Trigg County's defense is allowing just 10.8 points a game -- the fewest since the 2003 season and tied for tenth best in school history.
• The last time Trigg County dropped their regular season finale was Curtis Higgins' first season in 1999 -- a 48-28 loss to Madisonville.
• Lone Oak averages 42.4 points a game in their five wins and 19.0 in their four losses.  Defensively, Lone Oak has allowed 8.0 a game in their five wins and 30.2 points in their four losses.

• Trigg County has won 16 straight games in October and 23 of their last 24.  Their last loss in October was a 25-21 setback to Webster County in 2002.

The gift that keeps giving -- and gets you booted from the team

Six high school football players decided to give blood before a recent practice.  Their actions got them a small sticker and booted from the team by the coach, who later reinstated them after several people in the school and community questioned it.

Not sure what the reason was and what kind of lesson the coach's decision was supposed to have taught the players and team.

Wildcats compete at Christian County Invitational

Trigg County had a good showing at the Christian County Invitational last Saturday in Hopkinsville.  I apologize for the delay in getting the results posted, but I had to search for the results on the net.

In the boys' varsity race, Jay Jolly finished 69th out of 182 runners with a time of 19:30 over the 3.1-mile course.  Owensboro Catholic's Willie Polio won the race in 16:47.

Jakelzie Martin finished 147th for Trigg County in a time of 22:27, followed by Grady Cofield in 152nd (22:59); and Landon Sumner in 171st (25:23).

In the girls' varsity race, Shakandace Malone led the Trigg runners with a 40th place finish in 22:45, which was 2:30 behind race winner Suzanne Holt of Muhlenberg South.

Macey King finished 100th in a time of 25:25, followed by Rachel Cronin in 156th (31:15) and Katelyn Sabero in 158th (31:20).

In the boys' middle school race, Romaine Cunningham was unable to defend his race title won last year, finishing fifth in a time of 17:29 over the 2.5-mile course.  Justin House of Burns Middle School won the race in 15:46.

Hunter Allen finished 73rd for Trigg County in a time of 27:46, while Eric Huff was 74th in a time of 28:38.

Alex Olin came in sixth (11:59) for Trigg County in the girls' elementary race, while Alex Carr was 16th in a time of 13:12, and X'Zashea Mayes was 18th in a time of 13:18 over the 2.4-mile course.

In the elementary boys' race, Jayven Jones was eighth in 11:37, followed by Corbin Estes in 23rd (12:23); Caleb McIntosh in 43rd (13:44); and Duncan Mangels in 49th (15:03).

Trigg County will compete in the Meet of Champions Saturday at Masterson Station Park in Lexington -- the final regular season meet before next week's region meet in Murray.

UHA's Scotty Hopson verbals to Mississippi State

The internet message boards were abuzz about University Heights junior Scotty Hopson giving a verbal commitment to Mississippi State.

On Tuesday, Hopson confirmed it.

Hopson told the Kentucky New Era that he told the SEC school of his decision Monday night.

The 6-6 junior averaged 12 points and six rebounds last year, mainly off the bench.

Why did he choose the Bulldogs over Kentucky?

“UK was in the running.  If they had showed me more interest, I might have gone there,” Hopson told the New Era.

Driving Directions to Lone Oak

Once again, Trigg County travels to a stadium that isn't at the high school.

Directions to Lone Oak are very easy.

• Take I-24 toward Paducah and exit at Exit 4 (Lourdes Hospital exit)
• Turn left on Highway 45 (Lone Oak Road)
• Turn left on Bleich Road (KY 3074), just past the K-Mart.  Stadium is on the right.

A.J. Bridges named to All-Region team

Congratulations to Trigg County soccer player AJ Bridges, who was named to the All-Second Region soccer team last week following Hopkinsville’s win over Lyon County.  The junior was the leading scorer on the season for the Wildcats.

Trigg wins freshman title

Dyllan Cionko rushed for three touchdowns, and Trigg County's defense came up with a late stand as the Wildcat freshman beat Christian County 20-16 for the East WKC Conference Freshman Championship Monday night at the Stadium of Champions.

Trigg jumped out to a 14-0 lead before Christian County answered with a touchdown right before halftime to cut the lead to 14-8.

The Colonels took a 16-14 lead before Cionko scored his third touchdown midway through the second half for the eventual game winning score.

Trigg County's freshmen finish the season with a record of 8-1, avenging an earlier 8-0 loss to Christian County.

Hopkinsville scored in the game's final minute to beat Madisonville 14-12 to win the East WKC Conference JV championship.

Caldwell's Fraliex to Murray State

Caldwell County standout Matt Fraliex has given a verbal commitment to attend Murray State University, according to the web site Racer Insider.com.

The 6-4 shooting guard averaged 26.2 points last season, which was fifth best in the state and has scored over 2,000 points in his career.

Fraliex told the web site that he chose Murray State over Western Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky, Belmont, Samford, Bellarmine and Dayton.

Lady Wildcat Soccer Banquet

Members of the Trigg County Lady Wildcat soccer team recognized at the team's annual banquet Monday night. 

Awards were given to Laykn Brooks (All-Region, Players' Choice Award, Team MVP); Taylor Davis (All-Region, Academic Award, Most Assists, 93% Award); Kelci Winn (Leading Scorer, Offensive Player Award); Hanna Oliver (Defensive Player Award); Melanie Want (93% Award); Brooke Allen (Most Improved); Katie Davis (JV Coaches Award); Amanda Want (JV Players Choice Award, JV MVP); Brooklyn Thomas (JV Outstanding Offensive Player Award); Haley Oliver (Most Versatile Award); Shaundra Finley (Letter Award); Rachel Want (JV Most Improved); Lyndsey Darnall (Senior Award); and Elizabeth Rogers (Most Improved).

Trigg County finished the season with a 5-9-2 record.

Playoff scenario breakdown

I've had several people ask me about the possible playoff scenarios and what Trigg's likely matchups will be.

First off, Caldwell County has clinched the top seed in the playoffs, and Fort Campbell is the #2 seed regardless of what happens Friday. 

Second, Trigg is in the playoffs no matter what.

This week, Trigg County plays at Lone Oak, while Webster County plays Heath.  There is only one scenario where Trigg would be the fourth seed -- Lone Oak beats Trigg and Heath beats Webster .  That would make Trigg the fourth seed.

Here are the other three scenarios.  The numbers in parenthesis are the points awarded in case of a three-way tie.  Teams can count the wins of their defeated opponents as one point.

Only the top four teams in the district make the playoffs.

Where is ESPN?

While channel surfing on Mediacom cable in Trigg County, it was obvious some of the sports channels were switched -- most notably ESPN.  Here is the detective work I've completed with the help of my trusty remote control.

Trigg players named to the All-Region team

Members of the All-Second Region Girls' Soccer team are Alex Arnold, Gracie Elliott, Maura Hughes and Savannah Pepper of champion Caldwell County; Olivia Akridge, Torie Fralick, Katie Gray, Lindsey Robertson and Lee Ann Walker of runner-up Lyon County; Cara Wimpy, Kelsey Venable, Jackie Durbin and Ashley Noblit of Hopkinsville; Laykn Brooks and Taylor Davis of Trigg County; Rebecca Shultz and Darian Stahl of Ft. Oddly, neither Davis nor Brooks were named to the All-Fourth District team on voting by the coaches but were named to the All-Region team on voting done by coaches.

Trigg frosh to play for title Monday night

Trigg County's freshman football team will play Christian County Monday night for the Pennyrile Conference Freshman Championship at 6pm at the Stadium of Champions.

The game was rescheduled from last Thursday due to bad weather.

Christian County beat Trigg 8-0 earlier in the season, giving them their only loss in eight games.

Around the district...

Lone Oak 33 Reidland 0 - Lone Oak quarterback Corey Robinson completed 16-of-25 passes for 329 yards and four four touchdowns and rushed for 64 yards and a score.  Lone Oak outgained Reidland 489-180 and capiltalized on five Greyhound turnovers.

Fort Campbell 55 Webster County 0 - Freshman Troy Turner rushed for 209 yards and two TDs, while the Falcon defense returned two fumbles for scores.  Here is a game recap from the Clarksville Leaf Chronicle and The Kentucky New Era.

Caldwell County 35 Heath 28 - Caldwell County nearly blew a 21-point second half lead but held on for the seven-point win in west Paducah.  Heath running back Chad Wright rushed 32 times for 271 yards and a TD, while Caldwell QB Will Barnes was 16-of-30 passing for 188 yards and two TDs passing and two more rushing.  Caldwell running back Rodney Bell sat out with an injury.  Here is the game recap from the Princeton Times Leader.

KHSAA approves boundaries for private schools

In an effort to curb recruiting by private schools, the KHSAA Board of Control voted today to set boundaries for private schools when it comes to feeder programs at the middle school level.

This one is more likely headed for a court challenge than it is the rule book IMO...

Trigg County 56 Muhlenberg South 12

Trigg County clinches a playoff spot and eliminates Muhlenberg South from the playoff chase.  The Wildcats rolled up 542 yards off offense, including 406 on the ground.  Other news and notes from the game...

• Trigg averaged 10.9 yards a carry and 10.6 yards a snap.
• Donald Bush was 7-of-14 passing for 122 yards and 3 TDs.
• Scotty Mayes rushed for 160 yards on seven carries, while Brandon Bridges added 153 yards on eight carries.
• Cole Davis was a perfect 8-for-8 on extra point conversions and is 32-for-37 for the year.
• Trigg outgained the Suns 139-15 in the first quarter.
• Muhlenberg South had 102 yards of offense, including just nine rushing yards on 25 carries.  They averaged 2.0 yards a snap.
• Trigg County was penalized ten times for 105 yards -- both season highs.
• Trigg County is now 7-0 lifetime against Muhlenberg South.  Friday was likely the last game against the Suns for a while, with Muhlenberg South moving up to Class 3A next year and not showing any desire to play the Wildcats in the future.

Trigg frosh to play for title tonight

Trigg County's freshman football team will play Christian County for the Pennyrile Conference Freshman Championship tonight at 6pm at the Stadium of Champions.

Christian County beat Trigg earlier in the season, giving them their only loss in eight games.

The Trigg JV team closed out their season with a 28-14 loss to Madisonville in the first round of the Pennyrile Conference JV Tournament Tuesday.

KHSAA to address recruiting today

The KHSAA will vote on two proposals today, aimed at curtailing recruiting by both public and private schools.  The C-J article was written by Trigg County native C. Ray Hall.

• Trigg is not ranked in the top ten in the Bluegrasspreps.com, or the Associated Press Poll, although Trigg is 12th in the AP Poll when all votes are counted.

• Take Exit 33 (Greenville/Nortonville exit) and take U.S. 62 East to Greenville (about 15 miles)
• When the road ends at a 'T' intersection with Highway 181, turn right then turn left on Pritchett Drive.  The stadium is located at Muhlenberg South Middle School.

Monday night magic

Just when I was ready to turn off the Monday night football game, the Bears stripped Edgerrin James and scored a touchdown to draw to within 23-17.

I then proceeded to watch one of the more bizarre games I've ever seen when Chicago won the game 24-23 despite not scoring a single offensive touchdown and putting up six turnovers.

The Bears became the first team to have six turnovers and win since the Titans had seven turnovers in a 24-10 win over Cleveland in 2000.

The last time a road team had six turnovers and won was....Da Bearz against Dallas in 1986.

The Cardinals showed what happened when a team gets conservative when they get a lead.  Instead of allowing Matt Leinert to keep picking apart the Bears secondary, they instead gave the ball to Edgerrin James 36 times for a whopping 55 yards.  Instead of sealing the win with a late touchdown, they opted to run the ball and attempt a field goal, which was no good.

That's why a prevent defense, or in this case, a prevent offense prevents you from winning.

2006-07 Trigg County Wildcat basketball schedule

Trigg County's basketball team and schedule take on a new look in 2006-07, with Jeff Embrey ready to take over the reins of the Wildcats.

For the first time since the tournament began in 1990, Trigg County is not eligible to participate in the All-A Classic Tournament because their enrollment exceeds the limit of 425 in the upper four grades.  At the rate Trigg County's school system is growing, Trigg may never be able to compete in the tournament again.

The Wildcats open the new season Nov. 30 at Wildcat Gym against Dawson Springs, whom they didn't play last year.  The next night, they will play Marshall County in the Marshall County Hoopfest in Draffenville.

All six of the Wildcat district games are doubleheaders, with two at home in December and two on the road in January.

The Wildcats have home-and-home series with Caldwell County and Hopkinsville.  They will also play at Henderson County (Feb. 3) for the first time since 1991 and will host University Heights Feb. 10 -- the first time the Wildcats and Blazers have met in the regular season since the 1986 Crittenden County Christmas Tournament.

Non-district home games include Hopkins Central (Jan. 5), Calloway County (Jan. 30), Webster County (Feb. 6), and Fort Campbell (Feb. 13).

Non-district road games include Lone Oak (Jan. 23) and Todd County Central (Feb. 20).

The Wildcats will travel back to the Marion, Ill. Round Robin for the third time in four years Dec. 27-30 and will play in the Autism Shootout at the Owensboro Sportscenter on Jan. 13.

2006-07 Trigg County Lady Wildcat basketball schedule

The 2006-07 Trigg County Lady Wildcat basketball schedule features several familiar faces and a few new ones.

Trigg County opens the season Nov. 28 at Dawson Springs, the only time they will play the Lady Panthers in the regular season.

All six of Trigg County's district games will be part of boy/girl doubleheaders. Two of the three in December will be at home, while two of the three in January will be on the road.

The only three non-district home-and-home contests will be with Todd County Central, University Heights and Fulton City -- the first time Trigg has ever played the Lady Bulldogs.

Other non-district home games include Fort Campbell (Jan. 18), Murray (Feb. 5), Providence (Feb. 12), and Caldwell County (Feb. 15).  The game with Caldwell comes after not playing the Lady Tigers last year for the first time in 30 years.

Non-district road games include the first-ever game with Logan County on Nov. 30, Muhlenberg South (Feb. 2), and Hopkinsville (Feb. 23).

Trigg County will also host the 12 Games of Christmas Dec. 19-21 at Wildcat Gym.  The teams that have agreed to play in the eight-team, double-elimination event include defending tourney champion Metcalfe County (14-14), McLean County (14-12), Murray (13-13), Logan County (7-18), Heath (7-18), University Heights (4-19), and Fulton County (4-17).

The following week, Trigg County will play in the McLean County/RC Cola Classic for the second straight year Dec. 27-29 in Calhoun.

Trigg County graduated one senior from last year's 5-20 squad.

Girls All-District team

Three Trigg County Lady Wildcats were named to the Fourth District All-District Girls' Soccer team.

Melanie Want, Lyndsey Darnall, and Abigail Torian were named to the squad based on season play, which did not include either of Trigg's leading scorers during the season.

Other players named to the all-district were Chelsea Mills, Brittany Bourland, and Regina Edmondson of Dawson Springs; Melissa Kirk and Katelyn Nasseri of Crittenden County; Tiffany McCormick, Maura Hughes, Gracie Elliott, Alex Arnold, and Savannah Pepper of Caldwell County; and Katie Gray, Laura Brown, Katlyn Carter, Lindsey Robertson, Torie Fralick, Olivia Akridge and Lee Ann Walker of Lyon County.

Prayers to the Stevens family

Thoughts and prayers go out to the Stevens family following the death this week of Tim Stevens.

Stevens, 43, suffered a heart attack at his Hopkinsville earlier this week.  Stevens was a co-captain and lineman on the 1980 Trigg County football team, which gave Dixie Jones his first winning season at TCHS.

Stevens, an avid golfer, is survived by his wife and two children.  Services will be Friday at Hugart and Beard Funeral Home in Hopkinsville.

TCHS basketball schedules coming tomorrow

The 2006-07 TCHS boys' and girls' basketball schedules have been released and there are some new faces on both.

The most important schedule change is the fact that Trigg County is not competing in the All-A Tournament for the first time in 17 years because their enrollment exceeds the All-A guidelines.

Lyon County wins district soccer title

Lyon County won their fifth straight district title Wednesday night with a 3-0 shutout of Caldwell County in Eddyville.  It was Lyon's third win over the Tigers this year.

Apparently, the Caldwell players were not thrilled to be the district runner-up, reportedly dropping the second place trophy on the ground and walking off before several Caldwell administrators stepped in and retrieved the trophy. 

A similar incident happened a few years ago when University Heights purposely left their regional runner-up baseball trophy in the dugout before departing for home.

Meanwhile, congrats to Zach Thompson, Roman Cail, Cole Davis and A.J. Bridges for making the All-District Soccer team.   Others named to the squad included Travis Humphries, Taylor Brehm, Grant Gilland, Chase Johnson, Michael Kinnis, Daniel Bugg, and Ryan McKinney from Lyon County; and Jake Pepper, Austin Adams, Corey Giannini, Coley Rogers, and Kyle Winn from Caldwell County.

Trigg County's girls' soccer season came to an end Tuesday with a 5-0 loss to Caldwell County in the semifinals of the Fourth District Tournament at the Complex.

The game was scoreless for most of the first half before Maura Hughes scored a pair of goals in the 27th and 33rd minutes to break the ice.

Caldwell added goals in the 41st, 50th, and 56th minute to seasl the win.

Despite playing without two starters, Trigg was able to generate some offense, getting outshot 20-12.

"I was pleased with their effort, especially at the start," said head coach Mike Smith.  "I think having to play an emotional game against Crittenden (the previous night) affected our stamina.  The girls really closed the gap this year between themselves and some of the premier teams in the region."

Trigg County finishes the season with a 5-9-2 record.

Caldwell County (13-3) advances to Thursday's championship game to play Lyon County (13-5), who eliminated Dawson Springs 2-0.

Crittenden wins district volleyball title

Crittenden County won their first-ever district volleyball title with a 25-21, 28-26 win over Caldwell County Tuesday night in the Seventh District title game in Princeton.

Congratulations to Trigg County's Casey Banister and Molly Thompson who made the all-district team.

Other members of the all-district team are Lonna Starnes, Kiley Amburgy, Darah Easley, and Tiffany Hearell of Crittenden County; Mandy Gray, Elizabeth Story, and Grace Story of Caldwell County; and Samantha Heneisen and Jessica Wingham of Livingston Central.

Trigg County won their first-ever postseason tournament game in girls soccer with a 2-1 win over Crittenden County Monday night at the Complex.

Melanie Want scored both of Trigg County's goals, giving her three in the last two games.  Want's first goal came five minutes into the game off an assist from Kelci Winn, while Taylor Davis' corner kick nine minutes later staked Trigg to a 2-0 lead.

Crittenden County scored in the 18th minute to draw to within 2-1 before both teams staged a defensive battle the rest of the way.

"I was really impressed with our play, especially facing the loss of one of our key players (Laykn Brooks) and facing a team that scored four goals on us earlier in the season," Lady Wildcat head coach Mike Smith.

Brooks was injured midway through the first half.  Lyndsey Darnall saved four of the five shots she saw in goal to get the win for the Lady Wildcats, who improved to 5-8-2 with the win.

Things will be tougher for the Lady Wildcats tonight when they face Caldwell County (12-3) tonight in the semifinals.  Brooks' status is unknown, and Want will have to sit out after picking up a red card late in the contest.

Caldwell County won the only game played during the regular season 6-1 Sept. 26 in Princeton.  Gametime tonight at the Complex is 6pm.  Lyon County (12-5) will play Dawson Springs (7-8-2) at 7:30pm.

The championship game will be played Thursday.

Caldwell County 25-25 Trigg County 14-14

Trigg County's volleyball season came to an end Monday in a straight set loss to Caldwell County in the semifinals of the Seventh District Tournament in Princeton.

Caldwell County won both games by identical 25-14 scores to advance to the championship game.  Trigg County's season ends with a record of 8-28, setting school records for both games played (36) and losses (28) in a season.

Casey Banister had 2 kills and 8 assists.

Molly Thompson had 2 kills.

Kalesha Williams had 3 kills and 1 block.

Stacy Schoneman had 2 kills and 1 assist.

Cayla Hampton had 1 kill, 1 block and 1 ace.

Cally Felton had 1 kill and 2 blocks.

Kassy Davis had 1 assist.

Samantha Harper had 1 assist.

Caldwell County (21-10) will advance to Tuesday's championship game where they will play Crittenden County (25-3), who beat Livingston Central 25-20, 25-17.

The two teams split their two regular season games, with each team winning on their home floor.  Tonight's game time is set for 7pm at the Butler Gym.

Caldwell County's speed and a quick start were too much for the Wildcats to overcome as they fell to the Tigers 5-2 in the first round of the Boys' Fourth District Soccer Tournament at Eddyville.  Trigg's season comes to an end with a 6-9-1 record.

Caldwell County jumped out to a 3-0 lead by halftime and never looked back in recording their 12th straight win over the Wildcats dating back to 2002.

"They came out very physical and put us on our heels.  We played much better in the second half, but we just got in too big a hole in the first half," head coach Josh Nichols said.

A.J. Bridges scored both of Trigg County goals, giving him 13 on the season and eight in the last three games.  Trevor Harper and Cole Davis had the assists for the Wildcats, who lost in the first round of the district tournament for the fourth consecutive season.

Despite the loss, the Wildcats are scheduled to return all but two seniors, including their entire defensive unit in 2007.

Caldwell County (11-8-2) plays Lyon County (6-7-1) Wednesday in the championship game at 7pm in Eddyville.  Lyon County swept the season series with Caldwell, winning 2-1 and 2-0.

Trigg County has never won a game in the district tournament, but a strong finish to the season and playing host to the tournament has the Lady Wildcats looking to make history.

Trigg County opens the tournament tonight against Crittenden County, who they beat 5-4 in their only meeting Sept. 4.

Freshman Kelci Winn, who transferred to Trigg from Caldwell County before the season, has supplied the Lady Wildcats with needed offensive punch and leads the team with 11 goals.  Senior goalie Lyndsey Darnall has allowed three or less goals in five of the past eight games.

"I like the attitude of the team right now.  They are coming together well, and we could make a run," said Lady Wildcat head coach Mike Smith.  "The last thing I said to them in practice Friday was that they could easily play at least six more games this year if they wanted it bad enough."

Trigg County enters the district tournament with a 4-8-2 record but have lost five of their last six games.  But to their credit, those five losses have come to teams with a combined record of 46-26-10.  Crittenden County has won four of five entering the tournament.

"I want the girls to focus on playing our game for 80 minutes during the tournament and just see what happens," Smith said.

Trigg County has picked the best time to be playing their best soccer of the season, coming into this week's district tournament riding a three-game winning streak.

The Wildcats have overcome a swath of injuries throughout the season to surpass last year's win total by one heading into the preseason.

A.J. Bridges leads the Wildcats with 11 goals, including six in his last two games, while sophomore goalie Josh Green ended the season with three straight shutouts -- a first in Wildcat soccer history.

Caldwell County easily won a pair of games over Trigg County this year and have won 11 straight over the Wildcats dating back to 2002.  The Tigers won 5-0 Aug. 31 in Eddyville and 7-2 Sept. 24 in Cadiz.

The winner plays Lyon County in the championship game Wednesday night in Eddyville.
