Several things are on the line tonight when Trigg County travels to Princeton to face the Caldwell County Tigers.
First, the Wildcats need a win to keep their chances of a no worse than a tie for first place in the district alive. If Trigg beats Caldwell and then Caldwell beats Fort Campbell, the three teams would be tied for first place if they win out in the district. Then the point system kicks in to determine the champion. Teams get a point for each win accumulated by the teams they have beaten. As of today, Trigg County would have five points -- getting the wins by Madisonville, Hopkins Central, and Franklin-Simpson. Caldwell County has three points (Union County and Crittenden County), and Fort Campbell has no points since Fort Knox and Paducah Tilghman are still winless.
That makes tonight's game important for the Wildcats, who have not lost back-to-back games since 1999.
While Caldwell County leads the all-time series 34-17-1, Trigg County has won three straight, six-of-seven, and eight-of-12. Curtis Higgins owns a 6-1 record against Caldwell County.
Trigg County is led in rushing by sophomore Brandon Bridges (122 ypg.) and Scotty Mayes (67.8 ypg.). Mayes is expected to play tonight.
Donald Bush has thrown for 351 yards, four TDs and four picks in five games. Trigg's leading receiver is Dhayna Cavanaugh, who has caught nine passes for 172 yards and three scores.
Even after last week's loss to Fort Campbell, the Wildcats are giving up just 188 yards and 11 points on defense.
For Caldwell County (3-1), they had last week off after beating Lone Oak 31-21 in their district opener.
The Wildcats must find a way to contain senior Cameron Williams, who has rushed for 234 yards and five touchdowns and caught 23 passes for 280 yards and four scores.
Quarterback Will Barnes has thrown for 566 yards and five TDs in four games.
In addition to being a big rivalry and a must-win if the Wildcats want to host a playoff game, tonight is Caldwell County's Hall of Fame night. Add in a 30% chance of thunderstorms and windy conditions, and tonight should be another interesting Trigg/Caldwell matchup.
