Hopkinsville 3 Trigg County 2

Trigg County couldn't hold a 2-0 lead and fell to Hopkinsville 3-2 Tuesday night at the Stadium of Champions.

However, the loss is just another chapter in the book of improvement for the Lady Wildcats, who lost to Hoptown 8-0 last year.

Laykn Brooks scored 25 minutes into the game off a pass from Kelci Winn, which proved to be the only goal of the first half.

Winn assisted on a goal by Brooke Allen in the 47th minutes for a 2-0 Lady Wildcat lead.

However, Jackie Durbin scored her 11th and 12th goals of the season in a six-minute stretch of the second half to knot the game at 2-2.

Hopkinsville scored the game-winner off a corner kick in the 71st minute.

"Hoptown fielded a roster with seven seniors and eight juniors, and we gave them all they wanted for most of the game," said Lady Wildcat head coach Mike Smith.  "We are building, and the first step is to be competitive every game.  We are doing that."

Trigg County fell to 1-3-2 on the season, while Hopkinsville improved to 4-3-2.  The Lady Wildcats return to action Monday when they host Todd County Central at the Complex.

Mother Nature claims another Wildcat soccer match

Another night, another rainout for the Wildcat soccer team.  Their game with Russellville Tuesday was postponed and will be made up at a later date.

The Wildcats return to action Thursday at Muhlenberg North, a team they tied 3-3 back on Aug. 24.  Hopefully the recent rainouts will allow the Wildcats to get back to full strength.

Brandon Bridges nets statewide honor

Trigg County running back Brandon Bridges earned a statewide honor for his big rushing night against Hopkins County Central Sept. 1.

Bridges was named the Bluegrasspreps.com/Kentucky News Network Player of the Week last week and was recognized on the radio network's Saturday morning scoreboard show.

Brandon ran for 273 yards on 22 carries and scored on touchdown runs of 35, 30, 18, and 58 yards against Hopkins County Central.

Wildcat soccer game postponed

Trigg County's boys' soccer game with Hopkins County Central scheduled for Monday was postponed due to bad weather.  No make-up date has been set.

Mitchell takes medalist at Western Hills

Trigg County finished second in a quadrangular golf match Monday at Western Hills Golf Course.

Tyler Mitchell fired a 3-under-33 to claim medalist honors on the day, while Taylor Lowary added a one-over-37.  Josh Lowe shot a season best 47, while Shaun Sizemore shot a 49 and Preston Metts added a 53.

This is the kind of score I expect out of Taylor. He is an excellent ball striker, it was a matter of time before he started scoring well," Wildcat head coach Jim Garnett said.

Trigg County shot a season-best score of 166, which was two shots behind Hopkinsville and better than both Murray and Christian County.

Trigg County will return to Western Hills Golf Course in Hopkinsville Thursday for another match.

NCAA gets one right

Last week, we told you about Clemson football player Ray Ray McElrathbey, who has temporary custody of his 11-year-old brother, Fahmarr, because of his mother's continuing drug problems and his father's gambling addiction.

This week, the NCAA gave Clemson permission to allow McElrathbey to get outside assistance to care for his brother.

Good to see the NCAA get a decision right...

Trigg County finished in third place in the Silver Medal Round of the Trigg County SlamFest Saturday and finished the day with a 2-2 record.

Trigg County started pool play by beating Russellville (4-15) 25-19, 25-10 before falling to McLean County (10-3) 14-25, 14-25. 

Trigg then lost to Christian County (4-4) 17-25, 21-25.  Trigg then ended their day by defeating Montgomery Central, Tenn. 25-17, 17-25, 25-17.

Casey Bansiter had 17 assists, 8 aces and 6 kills.

Molly Thompson had 20 aces, 12 blocks and 6 kills.

Kalesha Williams had 16 kills, 11 aces, 10 blocks and 2 assists.

Samantha Harper had 11 assists.

Stacy Schoneman had 7 kills, 2 aces and 2 assists.

Kassy Davis had 3 aces and 1 assist.

Trigg is now 5-10 on the season and will play at Crittenden County Monday in a key district matchup that will have major implications on seeding for the district tournament.

Jets 23 Titans 16

Tennessee's offense was a no-show for three quarters and still had a chance to win it late in the game but came up short.  Thoughts....

• Kerry Collins was 17-of-38 for 223 yards and two picks.  Both were by former Titan Andre Dyson.  Crank up the "Start Billy" chants.
• Travis Henry has a nose for the end zone and is a better option in the backfield than Chris Brown.  Since I have Travis on my fantasy team, I say start Travis next week.
• Eight penalties for 70 yards (Titans) is way too much for them to overcome.
• Jets kicker Mike Nugent (two missed field goals and a missed extra point) let out a huge sigh of relief when the Jets scored late or he would have likely been out of a job Monday.
• Vince Young looked good until his college throw/heave was picked off in the red zone.  Can't throw those type of passes in the NFL Vince.  You're not in Texas any more.
• It doesn't get any easier on the road at San Diego next week.

Cross Country opens season

Trigg County opened their cross country seasons Sept. 7 at Dawson Springs' Tradewater Park.

Jay Jolly won the guys' race with a time of 18:56 over the 3.1-mile course.  Zeke Wright was third in 20:53, followed by Romaine Cunningham in 5th (21:10), Jakelzie Martin in 8th (22:38), and Grady Cofield in 13th in 23:07.

Trigg won the boys' meet with 21 points, followed by Dawson Springs (44) and Murray (49).

For the gals, Shakandace Malone finished second for Trigg in a time of 24:07 over the 3.1-mile course.  Macey King finished sixth in a time of 26:11, followed by Alex Olin (8th, 26:55), Taylor Bryant (10th, 28:33), and Lynease Byers (11th, 29:28).

Dawson Springs won the girls' meet with 21 points, followed by Trigg County with 37 points.

Trigg County's next meet will be at Hopkins County Central Thursday afternoon.

Trigg County 49 Reidland 7

Trigg County won their first district game of the season with a 49-7 thrashing of Reidland at Perdue Field.  Trigg County is 4-0 for the sixth time in school history and 1-0 in the district. 

WKDZ Player of the Game - Dhayna Cavanaugh, 4 catches, 105 yards, 2 TDs.

Other notes from the game:

• Sophomore Donald Bush completed 9-of-12 passes for 200 yards and three TDs.  He came into the game with 116 yards in three games.
• Brandon Bridges had 15 carries for 94 yards and two rushing TDs.  He also caught a 62-yard TD pass from Bush
• Trigg County outgained Reidland 426-102
• The Wildcats still have not allowed a point in the second quarter.
• Scotty Mayes only had one carry while nursing a sore ankle.  He should be ready to play next week, Wildcat head coach Curtis Higgins said.
• Trigg County leads the all-time series with Reidland 12-2 and have outscored them 270-20 the past five years (5-0).
• Trigg County has won 11 straight games at Perdue Field and 17 of their last 18 at home.

What $35 and baby wipes will get you....

The powerhouse that is Kansas Jayhawk football isn't kidding around when laying down the law at the stadium gates.  And don't expect to have your infant or toddler sit in your lap for free if you decide to attend a Jayhawk game.

I can see Kansas basketball, but football?  I would think they would want to try and fill their stadium with any warm bodies they could find, poopy or not.  Let's just hope they aren't charging the mommies to use the changing tables in the stadium bathrooms.

Todd County Central 5 Trigg County 2

Trigg County fell to 0-5-1 on the season with a 5-2 loss to Todd County Central Thursday night at the Complex.  Trevor Harper and Cole Davis scored the goals for Trigg County, who will next travel to Hopkins County Central Monday.

The JV picked up a 3-1 win over the Rebels as Jeremy Butts, Tanner Stallons, and Devon Wharton all scored goals for the Wildcat JV team.

Congratulations to Trigg County's girls soccer team for finding Union County Thursday night!

Once they played, it ended in a 1-1 tie.  Taylor Davis scored on a 25-yard free kick 16 minutes into the game, but Union County tied the game with ten minutes left.

Trigg County peppered the net for 25 shots but came away empty all but one time.  Lyndsey Darnall had 11 saves in goal for the Lady Wildcats, who are now 1-2-2 on the season.

"We just couldn't get anything in the net," head coach Mike Smith said.  "I was encouraged by what I saw and we played well enough to win.  We just didn't."

Smith was especially proud of the defense that held the Lady Braves/Bravettes/Squaws to a season-low one goal.

The JV ran their record to 5-0 with a 2-0 shutout over Union.  They will play in the Heritage Bank Eye of the Tiger JV Tournament Saturday in Hopkinsville.

The varsity will play at Hopkinsville on Tuesday.

Freshman football game site changed

Trigg County head coach Curtis Higgins said tonight's freshman football game scheduled to be played at Calloway County will instead be played at Graves County because Calloway County cancelled the game earlier in the week.  The game time remains the same.  The Wildcat freshmen are 2-0 this season.

Midcats sweep Todd Middle

Trigg County Middle swept a pair of games from Todd County Central Middle Tuesday in Elkton.

The 8th grade improved to 3-2 with a 26-0 shutout of TCCMS, while the 7th grade is now 4-1 after a 14-0 win.

In the 8th grade game, Zack White scored on a 1-yard and threw a 40-yard scoring pass to Roderick Ware for a 12-0 halftime lead.

White's second fumble recovery of the game led to a 30-yard TD run by Alonzo Lewis and 2-point conversion by Andrew Stewart.

Shannon Tabor hit Zack White on a 5-yard TD pass late in the fourth quarter to end the scoring.

At 3-0 in conference play, the Midcats should be on their way to the Southern Pennyrile Athletic Conference championship game if they can win next week.

In the 7th grade game, Jeffery Bailey scored on a 50-yard TD run, and Dustin Daugherty added a 45-yard run for the 14-0 victory.

The Midcats return to action Tuesday

Dawson Springs 3 Trigg County 1

Trigg County fell to Dawson Springs 3-1 Tuesday night at the Complex, but their effort left Lady Wildcat head coach Mike Smith with a good feeling.

"One of the big positives from this game was how a few players who had not been playing much for us stepped up and really created some good opportunities for us in the last 20 minutes," Smith said.

Dawson Springs (3-4) scored the first three goals of the game before Kelci Winn scored in the 78th minute to break up the shutout off an assist from Brooke Allen.

"Our challenge was to maintain our energy level after such an emotional win the night before.  The girls did a lot of positive work which will help our growing process," Smith said.

The JV ran their record to 4-0 with a 4-1 win over Dawson Springs.

Trigg County (1-2-1) travels to Union County (2-5-1) Thursday.

Billy, Kerry, or Rookie?

Titans head coach Jeff Fisher is being tight-lipped about who will be the starting quarterback when Tennessee opens the 2006 season against the Jets Sunday.  Indications are Kerry Collins will be the starter, Vince Young will be the #2 QB, and Billy Volek will hold a clipboard and wear a funny Titans baseball cap.

Meanwhile, the Titans have brought back defensive tackle Robaire Smith, who spent his first four seasons with Tennessee before signing with Houston as a free agent last year.  Despite recording a career-high 102 tackles last year, the Texans released Smith.  Probably had to do with selecting Mario Williams with the top pick in last year's draft.

Signing Smith continues the flurry of the Titans raiding the other NFL teams' garbage bins this week, after previously signing defensive lineman DeQuincy Scott, cornerback Eric King off waivers from the Buffalo Bills, defensive end Josh Savage off waivers from the Atlanta Falcons, and linebacker Colby Bockwoldt off waivers from the New Orleans Saints.

Vikings sign Artose Pinner

Former Hopkinsville and UK running back has been signed by the Minnesota Vikings just days after being released by the Detroit Lions.  In 28 career games with the Lions, Pinner rushed for 622 yards and five touchdowns.

Pinner is expected to challenge Mewelde Moore and Ciatrick Fason for carries behind starter Chestor Taylor.

Moore's status for this weekend is questionable after sitting out the final three preseason games with a sprained knee.

Pinner's agent, Alan Herman, told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune that his client was thrilled to be claimed by the Vikings.

"He couldn't be happier," Herman told the paper. "The Vikings feel he fits their system very well, and Artose was certainly looking for a change of scenery."

A role model...and a brother

Imagine how tough it is for a college athlete to attend class while fitting in practice, team meetings, and games throughout the week while still trying to make the grades necessary to stay eligible and keep your scholarship.  Then imagine doing all that and raising your 11-year-old brother at the same time.

Here's hoping the NCAA makes the right decision in this case, although they rarely have a track record of doing so.

Trigg County 5 Crittenden County 4

Trigg County gave Mike Smith his first win as Lady Wildcat head coach with a 5-4 win over Crittenden County.

Brooke Allen scored in the game's tenth minute to tie the game 1-1, and goals by Kelci Winn and Abigail Torian added goals to give Trigg a 3-1 halftime lead.

Taylor Davis scored in the 52nd minute and added the game winner on a direct kick from 30 yards out at the 80:00 mark, finishing the game with two goals and an assist.

"I challenged the kids to come out with a win, and they did just that," Smith said.  "This team is consistently proving that anyone who plays them is in for a tough, hard fought game."

Trigg hosts Dawson Springs (2-4-2) tonight at 7pm at the Complex.

Trigg County ranked #6 in AP; #8 in Bluegrasspreps Poll

Trigg County has cracked the top ten in a pair of statewide polls.  The Wildcats are ranked sixth in the Associated Press poll, voted on by the media, and ranked eighth in the BluegrassPreps.com poll.

Midcats in action tonight

The Midcat football team looks to get back on track tonight at Todd County after dropping their last two games.

A sack, fumble recovery, and return for a 65-yard touchdown by Andrew Stewart was not enough for the Midcats Aug. 31 as they lost to Caldwell County 26 - 6.  The 7th graders rebounded to beat Caldwell 28-6.

A 60-yard touchdown run by Jeffery Bailey and two-point conversion by Hakeem Tyler gave Trigg an 8-6 lead.  Bailey added an 80-yard touchdown later to give Trigg a 14-6 lead.  Tyler scored on a 45-yard run, and Bailey scored his third touchdown of the night on a 55-yard run.

A fake punt pass from Alonzo Lewis to Zack White for a 60-yard touchdown was the only score for the Midcats in a 26-6 loss to Paducah Middle Aug. 29.  The 7th graders were also dealt a setback, losing 20-0.

Cantrell Rankings for football released

The first high school computer rankings are out -- the Cantrell Rankings from the Lexington Herald-Leader -- and LOOK who is ranked as the top team in Class 2A.

Lady Wildcats look to get win #1

In a rare holiday game, Trigg County will try and get their first win of the year tonight as they host Crittenden County at the Complex.

The Lady Wildcats are 0-1-1, while Crittenden comes into the game 3-0.  Trigg will also host Dawson Springs Tuesday and then make the four-day trip to Union County Thursday for a game with the female Indians (Lady Braves??  Bravettes??  Squaws??)

Thoughts from the armchair....

• Not even Tubby gives up 59 points to Louisville.
• UK came out looking scared in the first few minutes, and that is a reflection of the coaching staff.
• UK won't see an offense this good in the SEC all season.
• Give UK credit for not rolling over and quitting as they have done before.
• Andre Woodson's play at quarterback has appeared to end the controversy with he and Curtis Pulley.  Maybe they need to switch Pulley to DB.
• It's an absolute shame to see Michael Bush's season come to an end when he suffered a broken leg. That injury totally changes Louisville's outlook in regards to playing for a national title.  However, giving 28 points to UK's offense hurts those chances more than Bush's injury, seeing as how Bush doesn't play defense. 
• UK needs Keenan Burton to stay healthy or they may not win a game all season.

Next week, Kentucky gets to play Texas State in their home opener Saturday.  If they can contain Paul Blake at quarterback and not let Stone Hands catch a pass behind the secondary, they should beat the Armadillos at home.

As I sit here watching....

As I sit here watching Ole Miss and Memphis play on ESPN before the UK/Louisville game, I recognize a pair of players who have played at Perdue Field.

Dustin Lopez, who played at Todd County Central before transferring to Hopkinsville, starts in the Memphis secondary.

Will Hudgins, the backup quarterback for Memphis, led Memphis Ridgeway to an Integra Bowl win over Hopkinsville in 2003.  Hudgins was expected to compete with Martin Hankins for the starting job.  Hankins threw for over 7,000 yards for Hal Mumme at Southeast Louisiana before transferring to Memphis.

2007 Trigg football schedule taking shape

While high school football coaches are just getting their 2006 season underway across the state, they are keeping an eye on 2007 and starting the scheduling process for next year.

Wildcat head coach Curtis Higgins confirmed two pieces of big news Friday concerning the 2007 schedule.  He said Hopkinsville will play Marshall County in the second game of the 2007 Wildcat Chevrolet Bowl at Perdue Field.  He is working on finalizing Trigg's opponent for the same night but likely won't have to go far to find an opponent.

The Wildcat Chevrolet Bowl will be played in the second week of the 2007 season.  Higgins said things are in place for Trigg County to play Hopkinsville in Hopkinsville's season-opening bowl game at the Stadium of Champions in mid-August.  The other game that night will feature Christian County and another team.  Trigg County is 0-15-1 lifetime against the Tigers, with their last meeting in the 1979 season-opener at the old Walnut Street Stadium.

Trigg has district games locked in with Heath, Murray, Reidland, and Caldwell County -- with the Caldwell game to likely be played in mid-October, something that has never happened in the 52-year history of the series.

Higgins said Paducah Tilghman is another likely addition to the 2007 schedule, although their placement hasn't been determined.  The only meeting between the schools was a 31-9 Tilghman win in the 1985 season-opener.

Despite the lopsided win Friday, Hopkins Central could be a 2007 opponent, leaving Higgins to fill two other games.  Personally, I love the additions of Hoptown and Tilghman to the Wildcat schedule.  I'd like to see them keep their series with Fort Campbell and rekindle their series with Russellville, who the Wildcats played every year from 1953-2002 before redistricting caused the series to end.

Trigg County 55 Hopkins County Central 12

Another week, another impressive performance by the Wildcat defense, who held the Storm to 39 yards of defense while the starters were on the field.  Other notes...

• Sophomore Brandon Bridges rushed for 273 yards on 22 carries and four touchdowns.  It's the first 200-yard rushing game by a Wildcat since Steven Wadlington rushed for 205 vs. Butler County in 2004.  The school record is 306 set by Al Baker against Marshall County in 1984.
• Trigg County has now won 17 of their last 19 non-district games.
• Trigg County outgained HCC 474-106.
• Scotty Mayes added 63 rushing yards on six carries before turning his ankle and sitting out the second half.
• Sophomore Dustin Calhoun looked strong on both sides of the football, rushing for 56 yards on seven carries and recording nine tackles.
• Trigg is now 2-0 lifetime against Hopkins Central.

Trigg is now 3-0 and host Reidland Friday.  Reidland held off Ballard Memorial 29-12 and stand at 1-1 on the season.

Caldwell County 5 Trigg County 0

Caldwell County's Michael Bryan Ortt scored four goals, including three in four minutes, to lead the Tigers past Trigg County Thursday night in Princeton.

Josh Green had nine saves in goal for the Wildcats, who were outshot 26-12 in the game.

Caldwell County improves to 6-5-1, while Trigg County drops to 0-4-1.  Trigg hosts Todd County Central Thursday at the Complex.

With all of the recent injuries, I'm sure Wildcat head coach Josh Nichols would like to see what his full team can do -- something he hasn't seen yet.

Trigg County dropped a straight sets match to district rival Caldwell County Thursday night in volleyball action in Princeton.  Caldwell won 25-22, 25-13.

Casey Banister had 8 assists.

Kalesha Williams had 2 kills, 6 blocks and 1 ace.

Molly Thompson had 2 kills and 3 blocks.

Stacey Schoneman had 3 kills.

Keisha Stewart had 1 kill and 1 block.

Courtney Oliver had 1 ace.

Trigg is now 3-8 overall and 1-2 in the district.

The JV lost in straight sets 21-11, 21-12 and the Trigg freshman lost 21-11, 21-4.

Trigg returns to action next Saturday in the Trigg County Slamfest at Trigg County High School.

Trigg County broke into the top ten in the Associated Press High School Football Poll this week.
