In the famous scene from the movie Bull Durham, Kevin Costner and a few teammates created their own "rain delay' by leaving the sprinklers on all night and flooding the field, forcing the next day's game to be cancelled.
The same thing kind of happened Thursday when Trigg County's season opener was postponed after a cracked sprinkler malfunctioned and flooded part of the field. After looking it over, athletic officials called the game off with St. Mary.
The soccer field at the Complex is having some work done to construct new bench areas, and apparently a truck ran over the sprinkler heads and caused the malfunction.
The game with St. Mary will be played at a later date. The KHSAA scoreboard listed Trigg County as a 4-0 winner on their website Thursday and Friday but have since removed the entry.
The Lady Wildcats will try once again to play their season opener Monday against Union County at the Complex, barring another "man-made" disaster.
