Abigail Torian named Class 1A Track Athlete of the Year

Trigg County junior Abigail Torian was named the Kentucky Class 1A Track and Field Athlete of the Year based on a statewide vote of track and field coaches.

Torian swept the 100 and 200 meters at last month's state meet and was the anchor on the state champion 400 and 800-meter relay teams.  She is the first Trigg County athlete since Pauline White in 2002 to win four state titles in the same year.

Torian was also named First Team All-State in the 100 and 200-meters, while the 400 and 800 meter relay teams were also named First Team All-State.

Janada Acree was named Second Team All-State in the high jump.

For the guys, Scotty Mayes was named Second Team All-State in the 100-meter dash, while the 3200-meter relay team was named First Team All-State.

Also in Class 1A, Lyon County middle schooler Zhanna Trimm was named Second Team All-State in the 1600-meter run, while Timmy Perdue was Second Team All-State in the long jump.

Abigail Torian, relay teams sweep events at state track meet

Wing_foot_blackTrigg County's Abigail Torian swept the sprint events and helped Trigg County to a fourth place finish at the Kentucky Class A State Track and Field Championships at Owlsey Frazier Cardinal Park on the campus of the University of Louisville.

The Trigg junior won the 100-meter dash in a time of 12.77, which was nearly a quarter-second faster than Fulton County's Sharika Smith.

Torian won the 200-meter dash in a time of 25.89, which was nearly 1.5 seconds faster than her time in the prelims.  Fulton County's Sharika Smith, who had won four straight state titles in the 200 meters, finished third.

Shelby Grubbs was sixth in the 200 meters in 27.33.

Trigg's girls also swept the sprint relay events and tied a school record in the process.

The 400-meter relay team of Janada Acree, Khadijah Grubbs, Abigail Torian, and Shelby Grubbs tied the state record of 50.16 in the preliminary round.  The state record was held by the 2002 relay team from Trigg County.

In the finals, Trigg ran a 50.43 and finished more than a second ahead of the team from Bardstown.

The 800-meter relay team of Janada Acree, Khadijah Grubbs, Abigail Torian, and Shelby Grubbs finished first in a time of 1:45.30, which was a full second ahead of second place Bishop Brossart.

Janada Acree finished third in the high jump with a height of 5-feet, 2-inches, just two inches behind the winner, Catherine Claywell of Murray.

The 3200-meter relay team of Amanda Lawrence, Diasia Acree, Ellie Jolly, and Lenease Byers finished 14th in a time of 11:04.67.

As a team, Trigg County finished fourth with 49 points.  St. Henry (98) won their fourth consecutive Class A state title, with Newport Central Catholic (89) second, and Danville (58) third.  Fort Campbell, who beat Trigg County for the region title, finished 11th.

On the boys' side, the 800-meter relay team of Scotty Mayes, Dustin White, Brandon Bridges, and Jalik Alexander took first place in a time of 1:31.68, beating the relay team from Fort Campbell by nearly three-quarters of a second.

The 400-meter relay team was disqualified in the preliminaries.

Scotty Mayes finished fourth in the 100-meter dash in a time of 11.66 seconds.  Somerset's John Cole won in a time of 11.30.

Mayes also finished sixth in the long jump with a distance of 20-feet, 4-inches.  Lyon County's Timmy Perdue was fourth at 20-feet, 10-inches.

Ryan Acree finished 10th in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 17.50, just missing qualifying for the finals by six-tenths of a second.

Jalik Alexander finished 14th 400-meter run in 56.39, and was disqualified for a lane violation in the 200-meter dash after running the sixth fastest time in Friday's preliminaries.

Dustin White finished 10th in the triple jump with a distance of 40-feet, 7-inches.

Javin Grubbs finished 11th in the discus throw with a toss of 109-feet, 8-inches.

Trigg County finished in 14th place with 18 points.  Ballard Memorial, who won their first-ever Region I title last week, finished second with 59 points.  Bardstown (119) crusied to their fourth consecutive Class A state title.

Trigg County moves up to Class 2A in track and field next year and will be competing against one of the state's top programs in Paducah Tilghman.  The Tilghman boys' team won their eighth straight Class 2A title last year, while the Tilghman girls' saw their streak of seven straight state titles come to an end.

Trigg County: Say Goodbye to Class A

Wing_foot_blackTo provide further proof that the Trigg County School System is among the fastest growing in this end of the state, look no further than the recent draft alignment for track and cross country.

According to the draft alignment, which would take affect in the 2008-09 school year, Trigg County would be bumped up to Class 2A in both cross country and track and field.  Honestly, that's not a good thing.

Trigg County jumped to Class 2A in football in 2001.  Kentucky doesn't class sports such as baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball, and basketball.  However, Trigg County exceeded the enrollment size for the All-A Tournament last year and was not eligible for the small school tournament for the first time since it was created in 1990.  That means Trigg County is no longer in Class A in any sport.

The jump to Class 2A in cross country means Trigg County would compete against stout programs such as Calloway County, Muhlenberg South, Muhlenberg North, and Webster County.  Trigg County was bumped to 2A for a short time in the late 1990s before dropping back to 1A.

The news is even worse in track and field where Trigg County would compete with Hopkinsville and track juggernaut Paducah Tilghman, who have won nearly every state title in boys and girls track in dominant fashion this decade.

The cutoff line for the switch in classes was an average of 601 students in the top four grades the past four years.  Trigg County's average was 614 students, which makes them the fourth smallest school in Class 2A.  They are unlikely to ever drop to 1A again in any sport unless enrollment cutoffs are changed.

Hopkinsville also makes the drop from Class 3A to Class 2A.

Trigg County wraps up their weekend at State Track Meet

Trigg County didn't fare as well as they had hoped over the weekend at the Class A State Track and Field Meet in Lexington.

The Wildcats finished tied for 23rd with just seven points, while the Lady Wildcats were 13th with 17 points.

No surprise that the northern Kentucky private schools swept both sides of the state meet.  St. Henry won the girls' side going away with 90 points compared to second place Bishop Brossart with 70 points.

Brossart returned the favor in the guys' meet, winning with 93 points to 73 for second place St. Henry.  Fort Campbell finished fifth with 44 points.

Sophomore Abigail Torian finished second in the 100-meter dash in a time of 12.64 seconds.

Wildcat_head_4_rlTorian also finished ninth in the triple jump at 32-5.

Laquisha Boyd was sixth in the shot put at 29-feet, 9-inches.

Janada Acree was 10th in the high jump (4 ft.-6 in.) and 12th in the 400-meter run in a time of 1:06.

Melanie Want took ninth in the long jump with a distance of 15-1.

The 800-meter relay team of Acree, Melanie Want, Amanda Lawrence, and Torian finished sixth in a time of 1:50.59.

The 1600-meter relay team of Acree, Lawrence, Amanda Want, and Sarah Woodall also finished sixth in a time of 4:22.

For the guys, Scott Mayes was sixth in the 100-meter dash in a time of 11.52 seconds.

Xavier Brison failed to qualify in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing 12th in 17.37 seconds.

Robert Sholar missed qualifying for the finals of the 300-meter hurdles by .08 seconds.  He finished ninth in 44.18.

Trigg's 400-meter relay team of Mayes, Brandon Bridges, Jalik Alexander, and Dhayna Cavanaugh took fifth in a time of 45.66.

The 800-meter relay team had a time fast enough to qualify for the finals but was disqualified for a handoff outside the zone.

The 1600-meter relay team also failed to qualify with a 10th place finish.

In the shot put, Ben Koenig finished 14th with a distance of 38-feet, six inches.
