Powerlifting team taking barbeque orders

Wildcat_pawToday is the last day to make your order for the Trigg County Powerlifting team's barbeque, that's scheduled for Saturday.

A plate lunch for chicken, ribs, or porkchop is five dollars.  A slab of ribs is 10 dollars and a half chicken is four dollars.

The orders can be picked up Friday Saturday at 3pm at the TCHS Gym.

Trigg Powerlifters repeat as STATE CHAMPS!

Trigg County repeated as state powerlifting champions with a convincing win at the state meet Saturday at Central Hardin High School.

Trigg totaled 105 points with Louisville Trinity finishing second with 89 points.  After winning five straight state titles, Trinity has finished second to Trigg County the past two years.

Trigg had three individual state champions Saturday, marking the 25th straight year Trigg has produced at least one state champion.  Since 1984, Trigg County has had 65 individual state champions.

Scotty Mayes won his third straight state title, claiming the 155-pound class for the second straight year.  He won the 145-pound class as a sophomore.

Mayes broke an 18-year-old dead lift record in the process.

Grubbs_liftAntonio Grubbs (right), who won the 185-pound class last year, brought home the 195-pound class trophy today.

Drew Pool won his first state title, winning the 175-pound class.

The back-to-back state titles for Trigg County marks the first time since winning three straight from 1993-95.

The state title is the ninth for Trigg County, which is three more than Christian County who has the second most titles.

State Powerlifting Meet is today

Trigg County looks to defend their state powerlifting title today at Central Hardin High School in Cecilia, just outside of Elizabethtown.

Trigg County has three lifters looking to repeat as state champions -- Brandon Bridges (165-pounds), Antonio Grubbs (185-pounds), and Scotty Mayes (155-pounds).

Trigg also had a pair of lifters finish second last year that could step into a state title this year.  They are Timmy McGee in the 250-pound class and Montrell Humphries in the heavyweight class.

The Wildcats have had an individual state champion for 24 straight years and 62 individual state champions since 1984.

The meet begins at 10am Eastern time.

Wildcat powerlifters win IronCat Classic

Trigg County won the 15th Annual IronCat Classic Powerlifting Meet Saturday at Wildcat Gym, with Montrell Humphries setting a new school record in the dead lift.

Humphries had a dead lift of 655 pounds, which equaled the meet record set by Russellville's Johnny Bailey in 2000 and broke the nearly 20-year-old school record set by Stacey Thomas.

Humphries and Timmy McGee finished 1-2 in the dead lift as Trigg set a new mark in the team total with their top 11 lifters totaling 6,085 pounds.

McGee (310) and Humphries (305) finished 203 in the bench press behind Muhlenberg South's Colton Bowling (320 pounds).

In the squat, Henry Wharton was Trigg County's top lifter at 450 pounds.  Bowing also won he squat with a lift of 500 pounds.

The IronCat hosted the clean lift for the first time, with Muhlenberg South's Derek Tyler winning with 275 pounds.

Trigg won the overall title with 15,900 pounds.  Hopkins Central (14,525) was second, and Madisonville was third with 14,255 pounds.  There were 10 schools represented, with Hopkinsville and Christian County not participating in the dead lift.

Trigg powerlifters are STATE CHAMPS!

Tc_logoAfter finishing runner-up to Louisville Trinity each of the past four years, Trigg County pulled off the upset and beat the Shamrocks (on St. Patrick's Day of all days) to claim the state powerlifting title Saturday at Central Hardin High School.

Trigg County won the overall title with 112 points, which was 13 more than Trinity's total of 99 points.  The overall state title was Trigg's eighth overall and snapped Trinity's five-year streak of state titles.

The Wildcats had five state champions, marking the 24th straight year Trigg has produced at least one state champion.  Since 1984, Trigg County has had 62 individual state champions.

The state champions were Robert Sholar in the 145-pound class; Scotty Mayes repeated in the 155-pound class; Brandon Bridges in the 165-pound class; Antonio Grubbs in the 185-pound class; and Devin Herndon in the 205-pound class.  Herndon also won the top lifter at the meet.

"For 2A Trigg County to beat 4A Louisville Trinity was a huge accomplishment.  This win is without a doubt the largest upset in Trigg County Powerlifting history.  Also, a very special thanks go out to all the parents who have allowed and supported their children on this year's team," said Wildcat head coach Erin Eagleson.

The win was also Trigg's sixth straight 2A state title.

Kentucky State Powerlifting Meet Saturday

Wildcat_headTrigg County will be shooting for their sixth straight Class 2A state title and 14th straight classified state title Saturday at the Kentucky State Powerlifting Meet near Elizabethtown.

The Wildcats finished second last year to Trinity, who won their fifth straight overall state title.

Among the lifters who could fare well Saturday are...

  • Junior Scotty Mayes, who won the 145-pound weight class last year with a total lift of 740 pounds.
  • Junior A.J. Bridges, who was second in the 155-pound class last year.
  • Barron Adams, A.J. Oliver, and Robert Sholar, who finished in the top ten in the 155-pound class last year.
  • Devin Herndon, who finished third in the 195-pound class last year.
  • Sophomore Henry Wharton, who was 10th in the heavyweight division last year.
  • Montrell Humphries, who was third overall at the IronCat Classic in January.
  • Dustin Calhoun, who was fifth overall in the IronCat Classic in January.

After winning four straight Class A titles from 1998-2001, the Wildcats have won five straight Class 2A titles.

Trigg County has also finished in the top three places overall for a state-record 24 straight years and have an overall state meet lift record of 906-93 for a winning percentage of .907.

The lifting gets underway at 10am at Central Hardin High School in Cecilia, just outside of Elizabethtown.

Trigg easily wins IronCat Classic

Trigg County made history Saturday in winning the IronCat Classic, becoming the first school to ever sweep first through fifth place in a single event in the 14-year history of the event.

Helped by their sweep, the Wildcats beat second place Hopkins Central by over 1,000 pounds.   The IronCat takes each lifter’s total in the deadlift, the bench press, and the squat, then adds the three totals. The 11 highest totals count towards the team score.

Tc_logo_152Trigg County's total of 5,815 pounds in the deadlift was the second-highest in the event's history, behind only Madisonville's total of 6,035 in 2005.

"I thought it was a great day for us," said Wildcat powerlifting coach Erin Eagleson.  "We had several people who haven't even tapped what they can do, and I think some of them realize that after today."

Trigg County is scheduled to compete in Hopkinsville's Best of the West Tournament in two weeks.

IronCat Classic Saturday

Tc_logo_149The 14th annual Trigg County IronCat Classic will be Saturday at Trigg County Middle School Gym.  The first lifting will begin at 10am.

The IronCat takes each lifter’s total in the deadlift, the bench press, and the squat, then adds the three totals. The 11 highest totals count towards the team score.

Trigg County won the first two IronCat titles in 1994 and 1995 and have since won two of the last three titles.  Last year, Trigg edged Madisonville by 175 pounds.

Among the Trigg lifters who could compete for an individual title this year are Devin Herndon, who finished second in the bench press (340 pounds); Henry Wharton, who was fifth in the squat (425 pounds); and Montrell Humphries, who was fifth in the dead lift (550 pounds).

The IronCat serves as a precursor for the State Powerlifting Meet that will be held March 17.
