Services for Glen Ringstaff have been announced

Funeral services for former Trigg County girls' basketball coach Glen Ringstaff will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the community activities building on the campus of Caldwell County High School.  Visitation will be Tuesday from 4-9 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Princeton.

Ringstaff passed away Wednesday at his home following a fight with cancer.

Ringstaff coached the Livingston Central girls' program for two seasons (1986-88) and was the head coach of the Trigg County Lady Wildcats from 1992-94, leading them to a 28-23 record.  In 1994, Trigg County advanced to the Second Region tournament, losing to eventual region champion Henderson County in the first round.

Ringstaff remains the only Trigg County girls' basketball coach with a winning record during his tenure.  He left coaching after the 1994 season to become the assistant principal at Trigg County Middle School.  He later served as principal at Caldwell County High School.

8th District Basketball Tournament Pairings

Here are the matchups for the 8th District Basketball Tournament hosted by Christian County High School.

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 20

BOYS

Hopkinsville vs. Fort Campbell, 6 p.m.

• Hopkinsville is the district and region favorite with a 24-2 record.  The Tigers will be looking for their first district title since 2004.  The teams met just once during the season with Hoptown thumping the Falcons 101-41 on Jan. 19.  Fort Campbell is 4-17 on the season and have lost 16 of 17 district tourney games against Hoptown.  Their lone win over the Tigers came in 2006.  Fort Campbell has never won a district boys basketball title.

Christian County vs. University Heights, 7:30 p.m.

• Although Christian County won the Sweet 16 state title last year, they lost to UHA 58-56 in the 8th District title game.  Neither team is the same as what they put on the floor last year.  The Colonels are 7-18 but only eight of their games have been played against Second Region opponents.  One of those was a 64-58 loss to UHA in December.  The Blazers are 13-9 and have won two straight tourney games over the Colonels.


TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 21

GIRLS

Hopkinsville vs. Fort Campbell, 6 p.m.

• Hopkinsville is considered one of the favorites to win a wide open Second Region.  The Lady Tigers are trying to win consecutive district titles for the first time in 22 years.  Hoptown is 24-4 and a perfect 13-0 against Second Region teams.  Fort Campbell is 3-16 and lost a pair of blowouts to the Lady Tigers -- 72-30 in December and 56-22 in January.  Fort Campbell hasn't won a district tournament game since 2005 (0-5) and haven't won a district title since 1997.

Christian County vs. University Heights, 7:30 p.m.

• Either of these teams could challenge Hopkinsville for the district title.  UHA is 1-14 in district tournament games with the school's lone postseason win coming in 2007.  The Lady Blazers have set a school record with 19 wins but managed a split with Christian County during the season, winning 76-69 on Jan. 14 but losing to the Lady Colonels 69-55 on Jan. 19.  Christian County has won six of eight games, with one of those losses to Hopkinsville.

Here are the matchups for the 7th District Basketball Tournament at Caldwell County.

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 20

GIRLS

Madisonville vs. Hopkins County Central, 6 p.m.

• Madisonville has won the last four matchups in the district tourney between these two county rivals.  Madisonville has been playing better basketball of late, winning five of eight games to up their record to 10-17.  Hopkins Central has also been playing better of late, winning half their six games in the month of February.  The teams split during the regular season with the Lady Storm winning 64-44 on their home floor and losing 60-33 in Madisonville last month.  Madisonville has won five straight district titles.


BOYS

Caldwell County vs. Hopkins County Central, 7:30 p.m.

• Caldwell County won the 7th District title in their second year in the district in 2007 but haven't won a postseason game since (0-4).  While the Tigers have established a program first by losing 20 games in three straight seasons, they have played the Storm close this year, losing 58-50 in December and 74-61 last Tuesday.  Hopkins Central (9-18) has eliminated the Tigers the last two seasons. 


TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 21

GIRLS

Caldwell County vs. Dawson Springs, 6 p.m.

• Caldwell County (14-10) will be the only 7th District girls team with a winning record in the postseason.  The Lady Tigers lost their first three first round games after moving to the 7th District but have now won three straight.  Dawson Springs has never won a girls district title and have lost six of their last seven district tourney games.  Caldwell County won all three matchups with Dawson Springs during the season, but the margin shrank each time.  Caldwell won 51-27 in December, 68-47 in January, and 44-39 this week.


BOYS

Madisonville vs. Dawson Springs, 7:30 p.m.

• Madisonville may be the heaviest favorite to win a district title in the Second Region.  At 18-8, Madisonville has three more wins than the other three district teams combined.  Dawson Sprins hasn't won a postseason game since 2006 and have lost six straight district tourney games to the Maroons dating back to 1997 -- the last time the Panthers won a district championship.  Madisonville won a pair of laughers over Dawson Springs this year -- 78-37 in December and 80-35 in January.

5th District Basketball Tournament Pairings

Here are the pairings for the Fifth District Tournament that begins the week of February 20th at Lyon County High School in Eddyville.

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 20

BOYS

(1) Livingston Central vs. (4) Crittenden County, 6 p.m.

• Livingston Central came into Friday's game with a record of 16-10, but a perfect 6-0 in disrict play to claim the top seed.  Crittenden County was 10-17 entering Friday but have won four of their last six games.  The teams played three times during the season, with Livingston winning all three times.  The Cardinals won 41-32 in December and 65-51 in January.  In the All-A Classic Region Tournament, Livingston held on for a 53-51 win.  It's only the fourth time in the last 10 years that the teams have met and the first since 2008.

(2) Trigg County vs. (3) Lyon County, 7:30 p.m.

• Trigg County's only two district losses were to Livingston Central, but they had to sweat out a pair of wins over Lyon County during the regular season.  Trigg County (21-6) beat the Lyons 77-66 in Cadiz in December and 68-61 in Eddyville last month.  Lyon County is 13-14 following Friday's loss to Hopkinsville but have still won five of seven games.  Trigg County hasn't beaten Lyon County on their home floor in the district tournament since 1979 (0-2) and have a 4-7 district tournament record at Jason White Gymnasium since 1979.

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 21

GIRLS

(1) Livingston Central vs. (4) Crittenden County, 6 p.m.

• Livingston Central rolled through the district with six regular wins and a victory of Lyon County in the All-A Region Tournament.  The Cardinals are 19-5 and have two shots at getting their 20th win of the season next week.  Crittenden County has gone from Second Region champs to a 3-21 record entering Friday's games.  Crittenden lost to the Lady Cardinals 57-35 in December and 68-31 in Smithland in January.  The district has produced four different champions the last four years.

(2) Lyon County vs. (3) Trigg County, 7:30 p.m.

• Both teams have been scuffling of late.  Lyon County has dropped five straight games to fall to 8-18 on the season, while Trigg County has also lost five in a row.  The Lady Wildcats are 10-13, and the chances of their first winning season in a decade are slipping away.  Lyon County won both games during the regular season -- 52-49 in Cadiz in December and 54-41 in January in Eddyville.  Trigg County is just 4-7 all-time in distric tourney games in Eddyville, but have lost 18 straight games to the Lady Lyons in Eddyville dating back to 1996.  Lyon County has won four straight disrict tourney games over Trigg dating back to 2001.

Lyon County 52 Trigg County 49

Lyon County scored the final six points of the game to beat Trigg County 52-49 Friday night at Wildcat Gym.

Sophomore Jill P'Poole scored nine of her 26 points in the fourth quarter, including two free throws with 13.3 seconds left to give the Lady Lyons the lead for good.  She added a steal and layup at the buzzer for the final margin.  P'Poole added 14 rebounds.

Trigg County got a career-high 27 points from Khadijah Grubbs before she fouled out late in the game.  LeLe Grubbs added nine points and seven rebounds, and Alyssa Maxey threw in eight points, 12 rebounds, and seven assists.

Lyon County scored 18 points off 21 Trigg turnovers and hit 57-percent from the free throw line.  Trigg managed just 5-of-16 (31-percent) and have hit just 11-of-39 at the charity stripe in their last two games -- both losses.

Trigg County dropped to 3-4 with the loss and 1-2 in district play.  Lyon is now 3-4 with their sixth straight win over Trigg County and 19th in their last 21 meetings.  Lyon is 2-1 in the district.

Livingston Central sweeps doubleheader from Trigg County

Livingston Central swept a Fifth District doubleheader from Trigg County Friday night in Smithland.  The Cardinals beat Trigg 78-71, while Livingston won the girls game 58-45.

In the boys game, Trigg County fell behind 33-19 in the first half before rallying to tie the game at 43-43 by halftime.

The game was interrupted in the third quarter by a 17-minute delay when the lights above the gym floor went out.  Trigg was leading 51-50 at the time.

Trigg County led 59-57 after three quarters, but Livingston scored the first six points of the fourth quarter and never trailed again.  The Wildcats missed their first five shots of the quarter, while Livingston hit seven of their first eight shots in the final frame.

Deonquez Nance led Trigg County with 32 points and five rebounds.  Brien Dossett had nine points and six rebounds, while David Wease and Cole Gardner each scored eight points.

Livingston Central was led by Lucas Croft with 22 points and nine rebounds.  Kenneth Cowsert added 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Trigg County falls to 3-1 with the loss and 1-1 in district play.  The game was the 120th in the series between the two schools, with Trigg leading 63-57.  Ironically, in 1,894 career games, it's the first time a Trigg County game has ended with the score 78-71.  The last seven regular season games at Livingston Central have been decided by single digits.

The Wildcats will play Mayfield today at 5pm in the First Kentucky Bank Shootout at Graves County High School.

In the girls game, Livingston Central used a 13-0 run to end the third quarter, and that proved to be the difference in the game as the Lady Cardinals won 58-45, snapping Trigg's winning streak at three games.

Livingston Central outrebounded Trigg 41-31 and won the battle of second chance points 16-6.

LeLe Grubbs had 12 points to lead Trigg County, while Mallory Mize added 11.

Livingston got 19 points and 16 rebounds from Haile Lampley.

Trigg County gets rare doubleheader sweep at Crittenden County

Trigg County accomplished a rarity Friday -- their first doubleheader sweep at Crittenden County in 20 years.

The Lady Wildcats beat Crittenden 46-32, getting their first-ever win in Rocket Arena in 11 career games (1-8 vs. Crittenden).  Trigg used a 16-5 run to end the game and move to 2-0 on the season.  Khadijah Grubbs had 16 points and seven rebounds, while Lee Lee Grubbs and Alyssa Maxey each had 11 points.

Crittenden County (1-2, 0-1) got 14 points from Bailey Brown.

Trigg scored 17 points off 23 Crittenden turnovers and outrebounded the Lady Rockets 38-30.

The win was Trigg County's first over a reigning region champion since 1994 when they knocked off Caldwell County.

The 2-0 start to the season is Trigg's first in seven years.  They look for their first 3-0 start since 1993-94 when they host Hopkins County Central Monday.

In the boys' game, Trigg County jumped out to a 20-4 lead and never looked back in winning 72-39.  The win was Trigg's 10th in their last 11 games vs. the Rockets.

Deonquez Nance had 32 points and five steals for Trigg, while David Wease came off the bench to score 10 points and grab six rebounds as nine Wildcats hit the scoring column.

Crittenden County (2-1, 0-1) got 14 points from Thomas Scott.

Trigg County attempted 35 more shots than Crittenden, thanks to 35 Rocket turnovers that led to 29 Trigg points.

The Wildcats (2-0) have held their first two opponents to under 40 points for the first time since the 1949-50 season.

Deadline for Trigg County Basketball Academy is Monday

The Deadline to register for the First Trigg County Basketball Academy will be Monday.  The Academy is for kids in grades K-6 and will begin October 29 and run for four Saturdays.  The cost is $20.

Forms can be picked up in the Trigg County Schools offices. 

Trigg County assistant boys basketball coach Russell Malone and TCHS girls head coach Amy Breckel will be overseeing the Academy.

Hickey, Kates named to C-J All-State team

Christian County's Anthony Hickey was named to the Louisville Courier-Journal's first team All-State basketball team in voting conducted by the state's coaches.

Teammate Donovan Kates was named to the second team.

Players named All-State honorable mention include Trigg County's Deonquez Nance; University Heights' Matt McGowan; Christian County's Veontae Lewis; Madisonville's Dylan Basham; and Crittenden County's Casey Oliver.

Calloway County standout Averee Fields was named to the Courier-Journal's girls first team All-State basketball team.

Rachel Hodge and Madison Dayberry of Union County and Crittenden County's Jessi Hodge were the only players from the Second Region named honorable mention.

Ashley Matlock signs with Shawnee College

 

Ashley Matlock signed to continue her basketball playing career at Shawnee College in Ullin, Illinois Wednesday.

The Trigg County Lady Wildcat made the announcement before a crowded room of teammates, friends, and coaches.

Matlock led Trigg County in scoring (13.1 ppg.) and rebounds (8.0) this past season.  Her 885 career points ranks 14th on the all-time TCHS list.

Lyon County, Christian County advance in the region tourney

Henderson County suffered their first opening round exit in the Second Region Tournament since 1989 as Lyon County pulled the 63-61 surprise Monday night.

Lyon County will play Christian County Friday.  The Lady Colonels were a 56-42 winner over Madisonville.

Aubrey Riggs had a key steal and bucket with just over a minute to go to break a tie and give the Lady Lyons a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Allison West led Lyon County with 22 points, and Riggs added 14 points. 

Henderson County had won 17 straight first round games since losing to Christian County in the first round of the 1989 tourney and had won the last six region titles.

Henderson was led by Ellie Fruit's 20 points.

Lyon County snapped a three-game region tourney losing streak dating back to 2006.  Their win over Henderson County was their first in seven career tourney meetings.

The Lady Lyons improve to 17-9, while Henderson County sees their season end at 14-12.

Christian County opened the night with a 56-42 win over Madisonville, their third win of the season over the Lady Maroons.

Christian County is now 11-11 on the season, while Madisonville's season ends at 14-15.  Christian County is in the semifinals for the fourth time in five years.

Christian County and Lyon County did not meet in the regular season.

 

 

A streak comes to an end...

I have found myself in a rare position during district tournament week -- listening to the games on the radio.

A bout of the flu combined with strep throat has pretty much wiped me out at a bad time for a sports broadcaster -- district tournament week.  By my count, it's only the second Fifth District Tournament I've missed since 1985 and the first since 1992 when I worked in Hopkinsville.

The basketball teams that are successful this time of year are the ones who buy into the team concept.  The same holds true in the radio business.

My thanks to Bill Booth and Ronnie Sadler who have stepped in this week and called the district tournament after being given about five hours notice that I was going to be on the shelf.

I hate to add work to anyone's already busy plate.  So my thanks goes to Bill this week for his work at the district tournament.

 

Brooke Kearney sets new 3-point record

Brooke Kearney set two school records for 3-pointers made Monday night in Trigg County's win over Hopkins County Central.

Kearney hit eight 3-pointers, which surpassed the old mark of seven set by Wendy Snyder Ahart against Fort Campbell in a 1992 game.  Kearney was 8-of-18 behind the arc and finished with a career high 31 points.

Kearney's seventh 3-pointer gave her 177 for her career, which surpassed Ahart's old mark of 176.  Ahart still has the single season record of 80 threes.  Kearney has 65 this season.

The Lady Wildcat senior currently sits at 15th on the all-time TCHS scoring list with 843 points.  She needs five points to pass Felicia Crenshaw and move into 14th place.  Angie Dillard is 13th on the list with 995 points.

Trigg County used a 20-0 first half run to take control and beat Hopkins County Central 83-43 Monday night at Wildcat Gym.  It was Trigg's first win over Hopkins Central in three career meetings.

Brooke Kearney had a career-high 31 points, including a school record eight 3-pointers.  Her seventh 3-pointer of the night gave her 177 for her career, which is also a new school record.

Senior Morgan Parker added 15 points and 12 rebounds, and eighth grader LeeLee Grubs added 15 points.

Trigg didn't shoot particularly well from the field (27-of-80) but outrebounded Hopkins Cenral 63-38.

Taylor Howerton led Hopkins Central (2-21) with 18 points.

The win gave Lady Wildcat head coach Amy Breckel her 50th win at TCHS.

Trigg County (7-16) returns to action tonight when they travel to Elkton to face Todd County Central.  Trigg has lost 19 straight games to Todd County dating back to 1986.

The pairings and dates are set for the Eighth District Basketball Tournament that gets underway Feb. 21 at Christian County High School.

Also from the district meeting held Saturday, the Kentucky New Era reports that the boys tournament will go to a blind draw format in 2012 following a vote from the athletic directors of the four schools.  The girls will continue to seed.

Fifth District Tournament pairings set

Lyon County won a coin toss with Livingston Central and will be the top seed in the boys' Fifth District Tournament that starts Feb. 22 at Livingston Central.

Trigg County will play Livingston Central in the second game Tuesday.  Livingston won two of the three games played between the schools this year, although Trigg did win at Smithland in January.

Trigg's girls will play Crittenden County in the opening game Monday night.  Crittenden swept both games from Trigg this year.

Lyon County is the defending champs for both boys and girls.

Trigg County held off Caldwell County 68-66 to get the rare win over the Lady Tigers Friday night at Wildcat Gym. 

The win was Trigg County's third in the last 46 games dating back 20 years.

Alyssa Maxey scored 26 points and hit 7-of-8 free throws in the final two minutes to help the Lady Wildcats hold off Caldwell.

Brooke Kearney scored 12 of her 14 points in the second half on four 3-pointers.  She now has 170 for her career and needs just seven more to break the record of 176 held by Wendy Snyder Ahart.

Ashley Matlock added 12 points and eight rebounds.

Casey Stone had 23 points and 15 rebounds for Caldwell County, and Jesse Stone added 18 points and 10 boards.  However, the Lady Tigers were done in by 25 turnovers that led to 18 Trigg points.

Trigg County had two different nine point leads in the game, the last at 35-26 in the third quarter.  But Caldwell used a 13-4 run at the start of the third quarter to take a 55-50 lead.  The fourth quarter alone had five ties and four lead changes.

The win pushes Trigg County's record to 7-15 overall, while Caldwell County falls to 3-19.  Caldwell still leads the all-time series 65-19.  Trigg's 68 points was the most scored against Caldwell County since a 73-39 win in 1990.

Trigg County returns to action Monday night at home against Hopkins County Central for Senior Night.

Trigg County is still slated to play Caldwell County tonight at Wildcat Gym in a boys/girls doubleheader.

The Lady Wildcats (5-16) haven't played since last Saturday's loss to St. Mary.  Caldwell County (3-18) also lost Saturday and have lost eight straight coming into tonight's game.

One of Caldwell's three wins came against Trigg County 77-48 at the KME Classic on Dec. 22.

The girls tip at 6pm.

In the nightcap, Trigg County (14-6) hosts Caldwell County (6-16), looking to win their fourth straight home game over the Tigers for the first time in series history.

Neither team has played in a week, with Trigg beating Fort Campbell last Thursday and Caldwell County losing to Madisonville a week ago.

The boys tip at 7:30pm.

In between games, the first Trigg County High School Hall of Fame class will be recognized and homecoming will be held.  So bring a sack lunch.

 

The Best: Second Region Basketball players

I was recently asked to help put together a list of the top boys and girls basketball players of all time in the Second Region.  The list would be a nomination list for the region for the Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame.  Each of the other regions will compile a list of their best players.

After voting by the seven person committee (myself included), the final list consisted of: 1. Travis Ford, Madisonville-North Hopkins; 2. Harry Todd, Earlington; 3. William “Bird” Averitt, Hopkinsville; 4. Dwight Smith, Princeton Dotson; 5. Fred Cowan, Union County; 6. Greg Buckner, University Heights; 7. Curtis Parker, Christian County; 8. Greg Smith, Caldwell County/Princeton Dotson; 9. Ty Rogers, Lyon County; 10. Glen Green, Henderson County.

My list had nine of the ten.  The only difference was at #10 where I had Livingston Central's Don Ringstaff.

Only Travis Ford was listed on all seven ballots, something I found hard to believe.  I ranked three players ahead of him -- Harry Todd, "Bird" Averitt, and Ty Rogers.

In the legends voting (pre-1950), Frank Ramsey of Madisonville was unanimous, with a tie for second between Carson Jones of Nebo and Carlisle Towery of Shady Grove.  I voted for Ramsey and Kuttawa's Joe Fulks.

It's hard to argue against any of those selected.

For the ladies, there was a little more difference from the nomination list to my list.

The top girls' players in the region as nominated were: 1. Rachel Byars, Union County; 2. Arnika Brown, Christian County; 3. Tonya Wells, Madisonville-North Hopkins; 4. Terica Hathaway, Providence; 5. Brandi Ashby, Webster County; 6. Stephanie Minor, West Hopkins; 7. Kelly Pendleton, Webster County; 8. Abbey Benton, Caldwell County; 9. Lisa Hayden, Henderson County; 10 tie. Nicole Hay, Henderson County; 10. tie Sharon Ottens, Webster County.

My list had only six of the above, not counting the tie at #10.

We agreed on Byars, Brown, Wells, Hathaway, Ashby, and Hayden.  Those I voted for who didn't make the final cut were Livingston Central's Stacey Calhoun, Trigg County's Karen Johnson, Providence's Diane Oakley, and Crittenden County's Shannon Croft (now Hodge).

Oakley scored 45 points against Trigg County in a game in the late 1970s.  That record was broken by another Providence player, Hathaway, who scored 55 points against Trigg in a 1997 game. 

The lists will be submitted to the KABC who, in turn, will have a committee to decide which people statewide will be inducted into their hall of fame.

 

Trigg County reschedules Hopkins Central game for tonight

Trigg County has rescheduled their boys basketball game with Hopkins County Central for tonight at 7:30pm at Wildcat Gym.  The game will follow the regular scheduled game with Trigg's girls and Reidland at 6pm.

The Wildcats (12-5) haven't played since last Tuesday's loss to Livingston Central in the first round of the All-A Classic Region Tournament. They will play a Hopkins County Central squad that is 5-14 and have lost 10 of their last 11 games.  The teams were scheduled to play Friday at Wildcat Gym, but the game was postponed because of the weather.

Tipoff is set for 7:30pm.

In the opener, the Lady Wildcats (4-14) play their first game in a week when they host Reidland (3-13), a team they beat 63-37 in the McLean County After Christmas Tournament last month.

All-A Classic Region Finals are set for Monday Night

The finals are set for the All-A Classic Second Region Tournament, and they feature four familiar faces.

In the girls title game at 6pm, host Crittenden County (12-3) takes on Lyon County (9-4).  Crittenden County has won four All-A region titles (their last in 2008), while Lyon County won back-to-back titles in 2006-07. 

Crittenden County owns a pair of 11-point wins over Lyon County this year.

In the boys' championship game at 8pm, old friends University Heights Academy (11-5) and Lyon County (12-5) get together in a matchup between teams that have combined to win the last 10 All-A region titles.  UHA has won 16 of the 21 career All-A region titles and six of the last seven.  Lyon County has won three region titles, their last one in 2009.

The girls' region champ will play 11th Region Champion Lexington Christian Wednesday at 1pm.

The boys' region champ will play the 14th Region Champion Thursday morning at 11:30am in Richmond. 

Trigg County 50 Dawson Springs 46

Trigg County overcame a slow start and hit some key free throws down the stretch to hold off Dawson Springs 50-46 to get their first win of 2011.

The game was tied at 26 after three quarters before both teams found some more offense.  Alyssa Maxey hit four straight free throws in the game's final minute to seal the win for Trigg County, who improved to 4-12 with the win.

Ashley Matlock had a game-high 22 points and 11 rebounds for Trigg. Maxey added 14 points, and Le'Onzerrae Grubbs scored seven points.

Laura Hatton led Dawson Springs (2-11) with 17 points.

Trigg County returns to action Friday at Livingston Central.

 

Union County 56 Trigg County 43

Union County used a 12-3 run to end the first half and a 14-3 run later in the second half to beat Trigg County 56-43 Monday night at Wildcat Gym.

The first half featured three ties and three lead changes before Union County began to pull away at the end of the first half.  The Bravettes were also aided by two generous calls at the end of both the first and second quarters.

With three-tenths of a second left on the clock at the end of the first quarter, Raven Sprague caught an in-bounds pass and hit a 3-pointer that was counted for a 14-9 Union County lead.

At the end of the first half, Rachel Hodge hit a 3-pointer well after the horn sounded that was counted by the officials.

Union County led by as many as 21 in the second half before Trigg staged a late run to make the final margin closer.

Union County (10-6) was strong on the boards, outrebounding Trigg 36-22.  20 of Union's rebounds were on the offensive glass that led to 23 second chance points.

Brooke Kearney hit four 3-pointers and finished with 16 points, while Ashley Matlock added 12 points seven rebounds.  Alyssa Maxey added eight points and six steals.

Union County got 16 points and nine rebounds from Rachel Buchanan.

Trigg County is 3-5 lifetime against Union County and haven't beaten the Bravettes since 1992.

The Lady Wildcats (3-12) will play at Dawson Springs tonight at 6pm.

 

Crittenden County 60 Trigg County 31

Trigg County's losing streak in their house of horrors continued Tuesday night as Crittenden County hammered the Lady Wildcats 60-31 in Marion.

Trigg County is 0-7 against the Lady Rockets in Rocket Arena and 0-9 in the building since it opened.

Critenden County led 14-7 after one quarter and used a 21-8 second quarter run to lead 35-15 at halftime.  Trigg managed just four points in the third quarter and trailed 52-19.

Eighth grader Le'Onzerrae Grubbs led Trigg County with 13 points.  Alyssa Maxey added five points, and Mallory Mize and Brooke Kearney each scored four points.  Ashley Matlock, Trigg's leading scorer, was held to two points.

Crittenden County (8-3, 4-0) got 20 points from Jessi Hodge and 10 more from Laken Tabor.

Trigg County falls to 3-10 on the season and 0-4 in the district.  The 29-point loss equals their largest margin of the season.

The Lady Wildcats will host Lyon County Friday.  The Lady Lyons knocked off Livingston Central 61-54.

• University Heights lost to Covington Catholic 65-53 in the second round of the Republic Bank Classic in Lexington.  Kquan McNease led the Blazers (7-3) with 18 points.  UHA will play Sheldon Clark today in the consolation bracket.
• In the First Southern Bank/Roy's BBQ Classic in Russellville, Logan County beat Caverna 59-52 and Owensboro beat Hopkins County Central 92-54.
• In the Murray Bank Laker Classic, Madisonville beat Apollo 39-36 and Kenwood beat Calloway County 62-52.

• Corbin beat Madisonville 54-32 in the South Central Bank Halton Classic in Scottsville.
• In games today, the Murray Bank Lady Tiger Classic begins in Murray with eight teams and eight games.

Caverna 61 Trigg County 47

Trigg County couldn't overcome a slow start and lost to Caverna 61-47 in the first round of the McLean County Lady Cougar After Christmas Tourmament Monday in Calhoun.

Trigg didn't score for the first 4:30 of the game and trailed 13-4 after one quarter and 31-15 at halftime.  Caverna (3-5) built their lead to 47-22 after three quarters before Trigg outscored the Lady Colonels 25-14 in the fourth quarter.

Ashley Matlock led the Lady Wildcats with 20 points and 12 rebounds.  Brooke Kearney hit four 3-pointers and finished with 12 points.  Le'Onzerrae Grubbs added six points and seven rebounds.

Caverna was led by Reagon Kingery's 19 points, and Madison Faulkner added 13 points.

The game against Caverna was Trigg's second all time against the Fifth Region school.  The only other meeting was a 71-53 Trigg loss in 2001.

The Lady Wildcats fall to 2-8 with the loss.  Trigg will play Lone Oak in the consolation bracket at 2pm today.  The Lady Wildcats lost to Lone Oak 63-51 last week in the KME Classic at Wildcat Gym.

Lone Oak was outscored 21-11 in the fourth quarter and lost to McLean County 59-50.  In other first round games, Todd County Central beat Carlisle County 53-30 and Estill County beat Reidland 44-35.

 

LaRue County claims girls side of the KME Classic

LaRue County beat Lone Oak 64-52 Wednesday to claim the championship of the KME Classic.  The title comes two years after LaRue's boys won the first KME Classic.

The Lady Hawks finished 4-0 in the tournament and have a 10-2 record on the season.

Lone Oak (8-3) turned around and beat Allen County-Scottsville 54-53 to claim second place.

In the final girls game of the night, Caldwell County got 22 points from Casey Stone and 14 more from Jessy Stone to beat Trigg County 77-48.  Caldwell jumped out to a 22-13 lead after one quarter and pushed it to 37-21 at halftime.

Ashley Matlock led Trigg County with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Le'Onzerrae Grubbs added 14 points and four assists.  Brooke Kearney hit two 3-pointers and finished with six points.

The Lady Wildcats played without point guard Alyssa Maxey who was at a Garth Brooks concert, according to her Facebook page.

Caldwell County improves to 2-8 with the win, losing three games in the KME Classic by a total of just 17 points.

Trigg County falls to 2-7 on the season with their sixth straight loss.  The Lady Wildcats will play in the McLean County Lady Cougar After Christmas Tournament next week.  Trigg will play Caverna (2-5) Dec. 27 at 4pm.  Other teams in the tournament are the host team McLean County (4-4) along with Carlisle County (2-4), Todd County Central (4-2), Reidland (2-6), Estill County (4-4), and Lone Oak (8-3).

 

KME Classic - Day One Recap

LaRue County jumped out to an 18-7 lead after one quarter and coasted to a 63-40 win over Trigg County in the first round of the KME Classic at Wildcat Gym.

Alexis Brewer and freshman Ivy Brown each had 16 points for LaRue County, who improved to 7-2 with the win.  Twins Lyndsey and Valerie Whitlock combined for 24 points.

Trigg County (2-4) got 11 points from Ashley Matlock and 10 points from Alyssa Maxey.  Le'Onzerrae Grubbs tossed in seven for the Lady Wildcats.

In other girls' games, Allen County-Scottsville (6-1) held off Caldwell County 75-67 in the opening game of the day.  Caldwell County (1-7) later fell to Lone Oak in overtime 60-59.  Lone Oak improved to 6-2.

In boys games, Josh Rose scored 26 points to lead Stewart County (5-3) to a 68-50 win over Dawson Springs (0-7).  Butler County (4-4) beat Reidland (3-4) 60-58 in the other game.

KME Classic begins today

The Third Annual Kentucky Machine and Engineering Classic begins today at Wildcat Gym with six games on tap.  There will be seven more games tomorrow and seven on Wednesday.

Both the boys and girls will play a four-game round-robin format, with the tournament champion to be determined by the team with the best record.

The four girls' teams will be making their first appearance at the KME Classic, while Butler County and Dawson Springs return for a second time.  Reidland and Stewart County, Tennessee are making their first appearance.

The field appears to be wide open with no teams owning a winning record.

Trigg County returns to the hardwood tonight at Lyon County in the Fifth District Doubleheader.

In the girls' game at 6pm, both teams enter the contest with identical 2-2 overall records and 0-2 marks in the Fifth District.

In the boys' game at 7:30pm, the Wildcats (3-2, 0-2) try for the first district win against the Lyons (3-2, 1-1).  A Trigg loss likely knocks them out of the chase for the top seed in an even Fifth District race.

Trigg County falls to Madisonville in scrimmage

Madisonville beat Trigg County in a boys basketball scrimmage Tuesday night at Wildcat Gym.  The Maroons won all four quarters, with the third quarter the closest at 23-21.  Had a running score been kept, Madisonville would have won by a score of 71-39.

Jaylen Mount scored 10 points for Trigg County, and Deonquez Nance added seven.

Tray Carr led Madisonville with 13 points, and Josiah Powell added 11.

Trigg scrimmaged at Whitesville Trinity last Friday and won that exhibition.  Had a score been kept, it would have been 67-26 in favor of Trigg.

The Wildcats open their season Tuesday night at home against Fort Campbell.

Trigg's girls have their final scrimmage tonight at home against Mayfield at 6pm.

 

Audrey Futrell signs to play basketball at Mid-Continent University

Trigg County senior Audrey Futrell has signed to play basketball at Mid-Continent University.  Futrell made the announcement official Friday in a signing ceremony at the high school.

Futrell averaged 7.0 points a game and led the Lady Wildcats in assists (60) and steals (65) during the 2009-10 season.

At MCU, Futrell is projected to be a shooting guard for head coach Courtney Nicely, who enters her second season for the Lady Cougars.

Trigg County to return to the All-A Classic

After a four-year absence, Trigg County will return to the All-A Classic in 2010-11.

The basketball coaches learned of their All-A Tournament matchups at a meeting last week.  Trigg County's boys will host Livingston Central Jan. 18, 2011 in the first round.  They will play the winner of Crittenden County and Lyon County in an upper bracket that matches this past year's district tournament.

Dawson Springs hosts Caldwell County in the bottom bracket wih University Heights getting a first round bye.

The semifinals will be Jan. 21, 2011 at Crittenden County High School with the championship game the following night.

For the ladies, Trigg County will play at Lyon County on Jan. 17, 2011.  They will play the winner of Dawson Springs and Caldwell County.

The lower bracket has Crittenden County at University Heights with Livingston Central getting a first round bye.

The semifinals will be Jan. 20, 2011.

Trigg's boys have played in the All-A championship four times, winning a title in 1997. The girls have advanced to the finals once.

Trigg County replaces Fort Campbell in the All-A.  Fort Campbell's enrollment exceeded the guidelines set forth by the All-A Classic.

The inclusion in the All-A Tournament also includes soccer, golf, volleyball, baseball, and softball, with those pairings to be announced later.

While Trigg's enrollment isn't declining, the consolidation of several smaller schools around the state have dropped Trigg into the bottom 125, which sets the All-A eligibility.  With Heath and Reidland getting consolidated into the new McCracken County High School, Trigg may stay in the All-A for a while.

However, the future fate of Fort Campbell in the All-A Classic isn't known with student growth on post growing.

District titles on the line tonight

Old friends renew their rivalry tonight at Tiger Gym as Hopkinsville and Christian County meet for the 19th time with a district title on the line.

Christian County (25-4) beat Hopkinsville (21-7) twice during the season, 77-67 on Jan. 18 and 86-74 on Feb. 1.

Hopkinsville's last district title came in 2004, while Christian County has won three of the last four 8th District titles.  Christian County is 14-4 against Hoptown in district title games and have won nine of the last 10 against the Tigers with district hardware on the line.

They will tip it off at 8pm tonight at Tiger Gym.

At 6pm, the girls' 8th District title will be played between Hoptown (15-8) and Christian County (13-14).  The Lady Colonels have won nine straight district titles and swept the season series with Hoptown.

Overall, Christian County has won 20 district titles, and Hoptown has claimed eight.

In the Fifth District tonight, Lyon County (20-5) and Livingston Central (11-11) meet for the boys district title for the second time in three years.  Livingston is looking for their first district title in 16 years.

In the Seventh District, Madisonville and Hopkins County Central meet for the boys district title at 8pm.  Madisonville's girls and Caldwell County's girls play for the title at 6pm at Hopkins Central High School.

In the Sixth District at Union County, Henderson County and Webster County meet for the gals' district title tonight.

Lyon County 32 Trigg County 29

In the lowest scoring game in Fifth District Tournament history, Lyon County beat Trigg County 32-29 Tuesday night to advance to Friday's championship game.

Both teams had multiple chances to win the game in the final minutes, but it was Lyon County that did just enough to get the win.

Audrey Futrell hit a free throw with 3:35 left to tie the game at 29, but it would be Trigg's last points of the game.  Trigg County was 1-of-8 from the field and 1-of-7 at the free throw line in the fourth quarter.

Futrell led Trigg County with nine points, while Morgan Parker added eight points and 10 rebounds.

Allison West led Lyon County with 13 points, and Rachel Rhodes scored 10.

The previous low for points by both teams was 68, last done in 1994 in a Caldwell County 40-28 win over Lyon County.  The 29 points scored by Trigg is the fewest in the district tournament since a 58-29 loss to Caldwell County in 2005 and the fewest in any game in three seasons.

Trigg has still never won a game in Rocket Arena since it opened in 2005 (0-8 overall).

For Trigg County, their season ends with a record of 10-13.  However, it's the first time in seven years that Trigg County has posted consecutive 10-win seasons.

Lyon County improves to 12-15 and will advance to Friday's championship game where they will play Crittenden County, a 57-38 winner over Livingston Central.

Jessi Hodge scored 20 points, and Crittenden County forced 24 Livingston turnovers for the Lady Rockets, who will try and win their first district title since 1984.

District Tournaments begin tonight

District Tournament action begins across the Commonwealth tonight as the postseason begins at various sites.

The Boys' Fifth District Tournament begins tonight at Crittenden County High School in Marion.

Top seed Lyon County (19-5) is the lone district team with a winning record.  The Lyons play the host Crittenden County Rockets at 6pm tonight.

Lyon County swept Crittenden during the season, winning 55-40 in December and 36-27 in Marion in January.  The Lyons feature one of the top defenses in the state, allowing just 43 points a game and holding 10 of their opponents to under 40 points.

Crittenden County (11-14) was 3-13 at the end of January but has won eight of nine coming into the postseason.

The Rockets have not won a district title since 1998 and have lost three straight district tournament games.

In the 7:30pm nightcap, second seed Trigg County will play third seed Livingston Central.

The Wildcats (11-12) have won four of the last five district titles, including last year and have won six of their last seven first round games.

Trigg County beat Livingston 52-48 in December but lost 82-70 in January.  The 82 points scored was a season high.

Trigg comes into the postseason having lost seven of their last 10 games.

Todd County Central 59 Trigg County 54

Todd County used a late 6-0 run to beat Trigg County 59-54 in girls' basketball action at Wildcat Gym Tuesday night.

Trigg trailed 50-47 with 2:38 left, but the Lady Rebels scored six straight points to push the lead out to 56-47 with 58 seconds left.

The game was tied at 28 at halftime before Todd County scored the first eight points of the second half.  Trigg never led in the second half.

Ashley Matlock was the lone Lady Wildcat in double figures with 19 points.  Brooke Kearney scored nine points, and Rachel Want had six points and 12 rebounds.

Evelyn Turner paced Todd County Central (8-15) with 21 points, including four 3-pointers.

GAME BOXSCORE

Todd County Central has won 19 straight games against Trigg dating back to 1986, although the five-point loss was the closest Trigg has played Todd since a four-point loss in 1988.  Todd County leads the all-time series 27-4.

Trigg County falls to 10-11 and will host Hopkinsville Friday night.

Caldwell County 70 Trigg County 49

Caldwell County used a 13-0 first quarter run and a 15-5 second quarter run to take control of the contest and beat Trigg County 70-49 Friday night in throwback night at the old Butler Gym in Princeton.

Caldwell hit seven of their first 10 shots and took advantage of 19 Trigg turnovers to score 24 points in the game.

Jayme Jackson led Caldwell County (13-9) with 20 points and five assists, while Casey Stone added 18 points and five rebounds.  Emily Meeks scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

Ashley Matlock scored 22 points for the Lady Wildcats.  Freshman Khadijah Grubbs came off the bench to score nine points and grab nine rebounds, while fellow freshman added five points and seven boards.  Brooke Kearney hit two 3-pointers and scored eight points.

Despite Caldwell County committing one more foul in the game, they hit 22-of-31 free throws (71%) compared to 7-of-18 (39%) for Trigg.

Trigg County (9-10) returns to action Saturday night at Carlisle County.  Trigg beat the Lady Comets (8-12) 45-34 back on Dec. 12.

8th District Tournament Pairings

The dates and times for the Eighth District Basketball Tournament have been announced.  Fort Campbell is the host of the tournament, but it will be held at Hopkinsville High School.

The Kentucky New Era reported that ticket prices are tentatively set for $5 but they may rise if extra security is needed to patrol the games.  There were two different skirmishes involving the teams inside the gym and a fight outside of Tiger Gym earlier this month when Christian County and Hopkinsville played which could prompt the extra security.

The seeds for both tournaments are the same.

Friday's Caldwell County games will be at the old Butler Gym

Friday night's boys/girls doubleheader at Caldwell County will be played in the old Butler High Gym on West Main Street in Princeton at the old high school.

Trigg's girls (9-9) will play Caldwell County (12-9) at 6pm, followed by Trigg's boys (10-11) and Caldwell County (4-17) at 7:30pm.

Trigg County last played a game in the Butler Gym in 1988, which was the final year for the school before moving to their current location.  Trigg's boys lost that game 73-46, while Caldwell's girls won the first half of that doubleheader 64-57.

Trigg's boys have a record of 16-15 in the gym against Caldwell County.  They were 3-6 against Butler High School there from 1938-53.

Trigg's girls are just 2-12 in the Butler Gym, winning games in 1983 and 1985.

According to the Princeton Times-Leader, at halftime of the girls game there will be a presentation to the late Russell Milton, who had a state record 48 rebounds against Marion on Feb. 19, 1957.  The 48 rebounds has been recognized as a state record.  The presentation will be made to Milton's widow.

The Times-Leader also said Friday will be the fourth time that Caldwell County has played a game at the Butler gym since moving and the first in four years.

The first throwback game was held on Jan. 16, 2004, which was a 75-64 boys win over Livingston Central.

Caldwell played a varsity doubleheader against Livingston at the Butler Gym on Feb. 11, 2005.

A doubleheader against Lyon County on Dec. 3, 2005 was the last time high school games were played at the Butler Gym.

Mother Nature is not a basketball fan

Mother Nature has shown she is not a basketball fan with the recent winter storms causing havoc on Trigg County's basketball schedules.

And unless some frantic scheduling is made in the next two weeks, the number of February games will be as low as its been in recent years.

With tonight's postponement of Trigg's game at Dawson Springs, the Wildcats will have four regular season February games if they do not reschedule it.  Last year they had seven.  The four games would be the fewest in Febraury since 1943 when they only played two games in a limited schedule.  Trigg played five February games in 1944.

In 2001, Trigg County lost the final week of the regular season to snow and went nine days without a game before losing to Caldwell County in the first round of the district tournament.

While the Dawson Springs is likely to be rescheduled, it is unlikely the Feb. 1 doubleheader with Stewart County, Tennessee will be made up.  Also in limbo is the Jan. 29 doubleheader at Fort Campbell.

In the past, Trigg County has scheduled late games on the Saturday before the district tournament.  The last time was in 1996 when they beat St. Mary.  That was their fourth game in five days, and Trigg went on to lose to Lyon County in the first round of the district tournament a few days later.

For the Lady Wildcats, they have six February games scheduled not including a possible make up game with UHA from tonight so the scheduling doesn't appear to be an issue.
