Devin Stewart to walk on at Murray State

Murray_state_helmetDevin Stewart will continue playing football in college after deciding to walk on to the Murray State football team.

Stewart (6-0, 180) was second on the team in catches (18) and touchdowns (3) and led the Wildcats in receiving yards (288).

While the Racers return four of their top five receivers from last year's 2-9 team, they are thin in the lower ranks with Stewart one of 10 freshmen receivers on the roster.

Ironically, the Murray State roster lists Stewart with jersey number 84, which was the same number his father Ross wore in high school at Trigg County.

Southern Illinois All Stars 21 Western Kentucky Conference All Stars 7

Despite a roster filled with athletes and game-breakers, the Western Kentucky Conference All Stars couldn't get much going on offense and fell to the Southern Illinois All Stars 21-7 Friday night at Roy Stewart Stadium at Murray State University.

The win is Southern Illinois' third in the four career meetings in the series.

The WKC didn't manage much offense, gaining just 180 yards on 39 offensive plays -- 74 of that came on a touchdown run by DaeRon Williams in the third quarter.

Southern Illinois led 13-0 at halftime before Williams cut the lead to 13-7 in the third quarter.

The WKC All-Stars, coached by Lone Oak's Jack Haskins, thought they had the game tied in the third quarter, but a 79-yard screen pass for a score by Williams was called back on a penalty at midfield.

So. Illinois also had a touchdown called back in the fourth quarter.  So. Illinois also missed two field goals.

Fort Campbell's C.J. Croft was 6-of-13 for 48 yards, while Hopkinsville's Kyle Graham was 3-of-3 for 13 yards.

Southern Illinois quarterback Matt Brown, who is headed to Illinois State, was 9-of-15 for 84 yards and a touchdown.

Kentucky All Star: Zach Rinestine

096Fort Campbell center Zach Rinestine is your typical blue collar lineman.  He grabs his pail and helmet and goes to work each game for 48 minutes.

That hard work has paid off into a scholarship to Western Kentucky.

Kentucky All-Star: Josh McWherter

McwherterAlways one to have an opinion and someone who likely talks trash at a family picnic, Fort Campbell's Josh McWherter soaked up the Kentucky All-Star football experience last week, culminating with an interception in the West squad's 41-10 win over the East squad at Papa Johns Cardinal Stadium.

McWherter is heading to Murray State University in the fall along with teammate Dexter Durrante.

Ben Koenig to skip East/West All-Star Game

Trigg County's Ben Koenig will skip this week's Kentucky East/West All-Star football game in Louisville because he has enrolled in classes at Southern Illinois University.

Wildcat head coach Shannon Burcham said Koenig begins summer classes today and will get a head start on his course work and get acclimated to college.

Koenig is expected to compete on the offensive line for the Saluki football team this fall.

His decision to enroll in summer courses is one of the reasons why Tennessee opted out of their annual all-star game series with Kentucky this year.  In recent years, many of the Volunteer State standouts have opted to miss the all-star game and head off to college early.  For some players, it was mandatory they report early.

As a result, this year's all-star game will feature Kentucky's West All-Stars vs. the East All-Stars.

Players expected to play for the West All-Stars include Fort Campbell's Dexter Durrante, Josh McWherter, and Zack Rhinestine and Christian County's P.J. Hernandez and Ramone White.

I'll have more about the all-star game as the week goes on.
