Trigg County 32 Warren East 12

Trigg County closed out the regular season with a 32-12 win at Warren East Friday night.  The win gives the Wildcats a 6-4 record heading into the postseason.

A sloppy field and ran thoughout the contest made the conditions next to impossible to get solid footing.  However, the Wildcats still rushed for 204 yards and held Warren East to negative total yards until their last play from scrimmage.

Quarterback Andrew Stewart rushed for 77 of his team-high 75 yards in the second half (he had -2 at halftime).  Akeem Wilson picked up 68 yards on 18 carries.

Derringer Grayson had a 70-yard touchdown with :19 left in the game to bring the Raiders (1-9) out of the hole offensively.  Warren East had 60 total yards, including 25 carries for 36 yards.

Five different Wildcats scored touchdowns for Trigg County -- Akeem Wilson (1 yd run), Josh Adams (2 yd. run), and Andrew Stewart (1 yd. run) on offense and Sean Beebe and Dillion Cionko on fumble returns in the fourth quarter.

Warren East's first score came on a 38-yard fumble receovery for a score by Immanuel Robinson in the second quarter.

Trigg County will host Owensboro Catholic in the first round of the playoffs next week at Perdue Field.

OTHER STUFF FROM THE GAME

• This is the first Trigg County team to put together a winning season after an 0-3 start.
• Warren East had 36 rushing yards, the fifth straight opponent the Wildcat defense has held to under 50 yards rushing.
• Several players switched jersey numbers at halftime because of the amount of mud caked on them in the first half.
• Warren East quarterback Prince Bennett departed the team earlier in the week, taking with him nearly a third of the Raider offense in total yards.
• Warren East fumbled the football 10 times.  Trigg County recovered seven, with Dillion Cionko recovering two. 
• Trigg fumbled five times and lost three.
• The last time Trigg County had two defensive touchdowns in a game was the 2007 playoff win over Murray.  Devin Stewart and Josh Adams each had a pick-six. 
• The last time Trigg returned two fumbles for a touchdown was 2005 vs. Lone Oak when Dhayna Cavanaugh, Dylan Sonnek, and Donald Bush each returned one for a score.
• The last time Trigg County lost a regular season finale was 1999 vs. Madisonville (48-28).
• Trigg County had five penalties for 25 yards in the first half.  They had none in the second half.
• Warren East's lone first down of the second half came on the 70-yard touchdown with 19 seconds left.
• Trigg had two scoring drives of 10 plays or more.  The Wildcats have scored on their last seven drives of 10 plays or more.

Three crazy high school football finishes

Here are three crazy finishes to high school football games on the web.

The first comes from Michigan where John Glenn High is trailing 28-27 and lines up for the winning field goal in the final seconds of an Oct. 2 game against Plymouth.  The kick is blocked and all craziness ensues.  

My question is this.  When the kick was blocked, the holder's knee appeared on the ground when he picked up the football, which would have killed the play there.

Here's another recent game with the different scenario.  The field goal doesn't make it to the goalposts and is caught.  This one comes to us from Massachusetts and features WCAX anchor Seth Leavett, who worked at TV-43 in Hopkinsville a couple of years ago when you could still get that station on your TV.

That one was shades of the 1994 Kentucky Class A championship where Beechwood was trying to run out the clock and threw the football in the air in their own end zone.  The Murray player caught the ball before it hit the ground, but the officials had already blown the call dead.

Now, we go into the archives for perhaps the craziest finish to a high school football game I've seen in a while.  Plano East of Texas trailed 41-17 with just over three minutes to go.  You know there is a comeback brewing but the finish is a classic.

Trigg County at Reidland Friday

Trigg County looks to move to 2-1 in district play when they travel to Reidland Friday night for a 7:30pm contest with the Greyhounds.

The Wildcats are coming off a 30-29 win over Caldwell County, coming from 21 points down to shiock the Tigers.  The 21-point deficit is believed to be the biggest come-from-behind win in school history.

After running the football 64 times against Caldwell County, expect the Wildcats to run it again against the Greyhounds, who enter the game with a 3-3 record.

Trigg County leads the all-time series with Reidland 14-2.  They have won the last seven games over Reidland by a total score of 373-20, an average of 53-3.

Last year, Trigg County hammered Reidland 61-0 at Perdue Field.  Trigg held Reidland to minus-58 rushing yards, which broke the old mark of minus-54 for a Wildcat opponent, held by Lone Oak in a 1971 game.

The 61-point win was the fourth-largest in school history and the highest since a 62-0 shutout of Reidland in 2003.  Five of Trigg County's largest margins of wins have come against Reidland.

Fulton County/Calloway County brawl results in 19 suspensions

A total of 19 players have been suspended for a total of 32 games, with one player suspended indefinitely as a result of an on-field brawl between players from Calloway County and Fulton County last week.  The game was stopped with just over four minutes left with Calloway leading 24-8.

The KHSAA suspended 16 players from Fulton County for a total of 29 games.  One Fulton player was suspended indefinitely.  Three players from Calloway County was suspended for three games.

The press release from the KHSAA, released Thursday afternoon, did not name the players suspended.

Fulton County was fined $1,000 and placed in probation through the 2011 season.

Fulton County announced Wednesday that they were forfeiting Friday's district game at Crittenden County in the wake of the expected suspensions.  The school suspended head coach James Bridges for the remainder of the season, according to today's Paducah Sun.  The Union City Messenger said that defensive coordinator Deatrick Kenney will take over as head coach for the remainder of the season.

I talked with Tommy Dillard, sports writer for the Murray Ledger and Times, today, and he said that Caleb Young suffered a concussion as a result of the fight and will likely miss a couple of weeks.  Dillard said he wasn't sure if Young was struck by a helmet being swung, getting kicked, or hitting the ground.

Calloway County will play district Rival Lone Oak Friday night without the three suspended players and the injured Young.
