Transylvania University golffer Bradley Sutherland is tied for 52nd place after the first round of the NCAA Division III Golf Championship at Port St. Lucie, Fla.
Sutherland had four bogeys and a birdie in his 3-over round of 75. He is currently eight shots behind the leader. Sutherland's teammate, Matthew Martin, is tied for fourth place with a 3-under 69.
Transylvania stands tied for 11th place after the first day, 18 shots behind Methodist University.
Another former Trigg County golfer begins his NCAA Tournament play today.
University of Charlotte freshman Tyler Mitchell will play in the first round of the NCAA Regionals at the Red Tail Golf Club in Sorrento, Fla. The 49ers are the #12 seed in the regional, which includes top-seeded Georgia and eighth seed Kentucky.
Mitchell finished tied for 12th as Charlotte won the Atlantic 10 title for the fifth straight year and have posted top 10 finishes the past two years in the NCAA Championships.
