Weaver calls an audible, will return to Madisonville as head coach

One day after being introduced as Mercer County's new football coach, the Danville Advocate Messenger is reporting that Will Weaver has changed his mind and will return to Madisonville.

The newspaper reported that Weaver met with the Mercer County players and principal this morning to inform them he had a change of heart and was returning to Madisonville.

Weaver is 12-9 in two seasons at Madisonville and was hired to replace Shannon Burcham after he returned home to take the Trigg County job in 2007.  Weaver, a former Fort Campbell assistant coach, was 5-5 in 2007 and 7-4 last year, marking the first time in 24 years the Maroons had consecutive non-losing seasons.

Now Mercer County must continue their search for a new coach to replace former Trigg County standout Marty Jaggers, who resigned after going 36-14 in four seasons, including the 2006 state title.  Jaggers resigned earlier this month when the school would not let him continue to coach after retiring as a teacher.

Madisonville's Will Weaver takes Mercer County job

Despite the start of high school football practice just three weeks away, Madisonville will be looking for a new football coach.

Will Weaver has taken the Mercer County head coaching job and is expected to inform his Madisonville players Tuesday morning of his decision.  A press conference has been scheduled Tuesday afternoon to introduce Weaver as the new Titans coach, according to the Danville Advocate Messenger.

Weaver was hired to replace Shannon Burcham at Madisonville after he returned home to take the Trigg County job in 2007.  Weaver, a former Fort Campbell assistant coach, was 5-5 in 2007 and 7-4 last year, marking the first time in 24 years the Maroons had consecutive non-losing seasons.

Weaver replaces former Trigg County standout Marty Jaggers, who resigned after going 36-14 in four seasons, including the 2006 state title.  Jaggers resigned earlier this month when the school would not let him continue to coach after retiring as a teacher.

It will be interesting to see if Jaggers returns to western Kentucky to pursue the Madisonville job.

Weaver's sudden move leaves Madisonville now searching for both a football and baseball head coach to assume successful programs.  Scott Vance was not retained as head baseball coach earlier this month despite seven straight district titles and a trip to the region semifinals.

Southern Illinois All-Stars 21 WKC All-Stars 18

Southern Illinois jumped out to a 21-3 lead and held off the WKC All-Stars 21-18 Friday night in Carbondale.  The win was the fourth in five career all-star meetings for the neighbors to the north.

Christian County's James Bauer accounted for both of the WKC touchdowns, and Hopkinsville's Jim Adkins kicked a field goal.  Bauer connected with Caldwell County's Eric Faughn on a 2-point conversion.

"Southern Illinois came out and ran the option at us, and they had some big plays from it," said WKC head coach Steve Lovelace of Christian County.  "I thought we adjusted well after that and had a chance to win at the end."

Lovelace said David Wallace of Christian County looked good at receiver, and Trigg County's Dustin White made a big catch late in the game.  The WKC was driving in So. Ill. territory late in the game but turned the ball over on downs and didn't threaten again.

Stephen Bleyer (Cartersville) ran for two touchdowns, and Massac County quarterback Zach Kester threw for another TD for the So. Illinois all-stars.

"We had a great week practicing at Murray State, and every player conducted themselves in a classy manner both on and off the field. They were a great bunch of kids to coach."

Trigg County running back Brandon Bridges and kicker John Reinick played in the game, and Wildcat head coach Shannon Burcham was an assistant coach.

Blake Boyd's WKU football career is over

WKU helmet Linebacker Blake Boyd will not return to the WKU football team for the 2009 season due to academic issues and defensive back Ryan Beard has been suspended for the first two games of the season for a violation of team rules, Head Coach David Elson announced today.

"Blake made significant contributions to our defense in many ways, and this is certainly disappointing news for our football team," Elson said. "It will also be a challenge not having Ryan for our first two games against very strong opponents. However, adversity reveals character and this presents a tremendous opportunity for other players on our team to step up and fill the void. I feel very good about this football program in so many ways, and I am confident we will overcome these setbacks."

As a junior in 2008, Boyd started 11 games and ranked second among all Hilltoppers with 67 total tackles while leading the team in tackles for loss (9.5) and sacks (3.5).

Boyd played high school football at Madisonville.  He enrolled at Louisville before transferring to WKU.

Beard, a freshman in 2008, saw action in 11 games with 10 starts and posted 41 total tackles and a team-high three interceptions.

Beard will miss WKU's opener at Tennessee on September 5 and home opener against South Florida on September 12 before returning to action against Central Arkansas on September 19.

WKU is the newest of the 120 member Football Bowl Subdivision (I-A) in 2009 and will be eligible for a bowl berth and the Sun Belt Conference championship.
